Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to enrich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

“God is love” - 1 John 4:8

This simple statement is the beginning and the ending of our pilgrimage of Faith. God is Love and the Lord’s Love is perfect, passionate and unconditional. There is nothing that we can do that would cause God to love us more and nothing we can do that would cause him to love us less. We are able to come to experience the beauty and freedom of God’s Love by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God reveals the Love of the Father that changes us. When we experience God’s Love we come to understand in a powerful way that we are in fact “lovable.” God’s Love reveals our beauty and goodness before him. On Wednesday, October 4 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, we will have our first faith enrichment session after the 5:15

pm parish wide meal. This year’s topic is on the Holy Spirit, and our first session will be on God’s love. All pa-

rishioners are welcome whether or not you have a child in faith formation, and childcare will be provided for

ages 1-4! We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, October 4!

Fr. Rother to be Beautified Next Saturday, September 23, something extraordinary for the American Catholic world will occur. A priest from the Arch-diocese of Oklahoma City, Father Stanley Rother, will be beautified. He was assassi-nated by government forces in Guatemala on July 28, 1981, after 13 years of mission-ary service there. He is the first American Catholic priest to be recognized as a martyr.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings

From an early age, we tend to distort the concept of “fairness”: “I am good. I deserve good things. I am not receiving good things. Something must be wrong. Who’s going to fix it?” We also know the age-old ex-pression: “Who ever said life was fair?” Jesus knew this expression when he offered his parable in today’s Gospel reading. Christian stewards acknowledge, with humility, that they receive good things from the Lord in abundance; even if these gifts are not the ones they think they need when they need them. Consider which servants you identify with most in the Gospel reading, the ones who demand “fairness”, or that final servant who, seemingly, deserves the least.

Domestic Church Challenge of the Week

Every week the “Strong Catholic Families: Strong Catholic Youth” team will give you

and your family a new way you can promote your domestic church at home!

The Strong Catholic Parents/Raising Great Kids met on Wednesday, September 20 from 6-7 PM. 19 par-ents gathered to discuss Chapter 1 from the book “Raising Faith-Filled Kids” by Tom McGrath. The goal of this first session was to help parents discover the importance of Christian living as a powerful tool to nurture their child’s faith. Participants were asked to think of religious art or images present in their home and then share stories behind those images. What makes them so meaningful to you? We told stories about how our parents taught us important lessons about living our faith. Lots of memories of how parents taught us about being a faith-filled person through their actions! We shared the importance of family tradi-tions. Some serious and so heartfelt, and some made us laugh.

Our Domestic Church Challenge – Taking Action

Pages 24 - 25 asks us to stop a moment to ponder, “What do I wish for my child?” Using the book as a resource, try to put your thoughts into words. If none of these activities fit your needs, tell the group about a practice that works for you.

The group will meet again on Wednesday, October 18 from 6-7 PM to discuss Chapter 3: A “Family” Business The Commitment We Owe Our Kids

Look here every week for ways you can promote your Domestic Church!

Why don’t we end the Our Father with an

Amen during Mass? When we pray the Our

Father outside of Mass, we conclude by say-

ing, “Amen.”

I remember this discussion growing up. My father noticed that the pastor of our parish insisted on saying “Amen” after the Our Father by adding his very loud “Amen!” and inviting parishioners to follow. We know early Christians prayed the Our Father daily, though its inclusion in the eucharistic liturgy happens later, and its placement in the liturgy is not yet consistent. An early reference to the placement of the Our Father from a late-fourth-century text places it at the end of the eucharistic prayer (A Commentary on the Order of Mass of The Roman Missal, 597). Here the people would have re-sponded with the final petition, “deliver us from evil” or “Amen” (597). To-day the Our Father is part of the Com-m u n i o n rite, but we do not end the Our Father with an Amen because in the current structure of the Communion rite the Our Father forms part of a unit. Immediately following the Our Father, the celebrant elabo-rates on the final petition (“deliver us from evil”). He then says the prayer for peace, which concludes with an Amen. These elements are all connected, one flowing to the next and culminating with the people saying, “Amen” (“Mystagogical Implications,” A Commentary on the Order of Mass of The Roman Missal, 616). Thus, we do conclude the Our Father with an Amen at Mass, but because it is part of a larger prayer during the Mass, the Amen doesn’t immediately follow “deliver us from evil.”

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s column of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. K e l l y Wahlquist, has introduced a pro-found, unique but practical method of pray-ing the Scriptural passages of the Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday,, Holy Saturday, Easter and Pen-tecost. In each of

the six chapters in her book, Walk In Her

Sandals, she begins by setting the stage for what we are to ponder in the events of these special religious days. Next she offers com-ments on their meanings as gleaned from both the Old and New Testaments and Church Fathers. Then she offers a fictional accounts of what it was like to be a woman during these particular days of Christ’s suf-fering.. From this the reader explores the specific gifts, such as receptivity or self giv-ing of woman. Next there is a prayerful read-ing of the Scripture passage of these days. The last segment asks how women can use their special gifts, as understood through these readings, to bring others to Christ. What a wonderful way to prepare for Christ’s Resurrection and Pentecost! Anyone interested in discussing this book is welcome to join the Ave Maria Book Club,Thursday, March 1, at 7:00 in the library. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. Contact Kay Fisher at 792-2863.

Alessandro Farnese was elected Pope Paul III in 1534 amidst very difficult times. Martin Luther had left the Church, and many German bishops, along with their kings, were separating from the faith. Part of the push for separation was financial, another part was political, and a third part was spiritual. The papal court and clerical life in Rome were often criticized, encouraging separation. Pope Paul III started a reform by calling on nine respected cardinals to investigate the accusations and propose measures. The suggestions were received and true reform began to take root—although much of the suc-cess was due to the Council of Trent (called by the pope in 1545) and the many saints active at the time: Ignatius, Philip Neri, Teresa of Ávila, Francis de Sales, Charles Borromeo, and others. Another measure taken was to contract Michelangelo to paint two frescoes in the Papal Pauline Chapel—the conversion of St. Paul and the crucifixion of St. Peter—a kind of sixteenth-century marketing campaign. This

chapel would send a message to all popes and the papal court; indeed, the frescoes challenged eve-ryone in the Curia. Amidst the temptation to power and luxury, the pope was saying, “If you want power, it’s the power to serve which re-quires true conversion and embracing the cross.” The chapel needed a pithy Latin phrase to drive home this message of reform. It comes from today’s second reading: “To me, life is Christ, and death is gain.” That’s a good phrase to live by as we seek our own ongoing conversion.
