Need Help In Math? Free Tutoring Now Available Online

Math students in grades 7 to 10 can now access live, in-teractive online math help by visiting www.homeworkhelp.ilc.org. Homework Help is free, real-time math tutoring by certified Ontario teachers. Students can log in from Sunday to Thursday, between 5:30 and 9:30 p.m. for individualized confidential math tutoring. There are discussion rooms for each grade where students can join and see what questions other students are asking, watch the tutors draw on the white-board – and ask their own question for on-the-spot help. Students will also find 24/7 discussion rooms, video les-sons and commonly asked questions. Other online math resources include math games and a virtual locker, where students can save their work. Homework Help is a project funded by the Ministry of Education.

Help Your Child Prepare For Tests Many students will become anxious at the thought of writing a test. Anxiety about an upcoming test can affect a child's behav-iour, thoughts and ac-tions. Here are some ways you can help minimize anxiety at test time: Organize & Prepare

• Encourage your child not to leave assignments, studying and homework to the last minute.

• Schedule time for review and work on assign-ments each day.

• Establish a regular time of the day for homework, studying etc.

• Make the home a homework-friendly environment where learning is regular routine.

• Remove distractions like the television, stereo, and telephone when studying.

• Tell your child to make sure tests and due dates are marked in their agenda.

Practice

• Encourage your child to think about what, when, where and how when preparing/completing as-signments.

• Develop practice tests and help them to antici-pate questions.

• Review previous exercises. • When appropriate, encourage your child to pair

up with a friend to review information and brain-storm.

• Build learning into family activities— suggest keeping a journal, writing a report or a news arti-cle about family events, outings or trips.

Be in the know

• Check out the curriculum for your child’s grade level (available as PDF files at www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum)

• Ask your child’s teacher about major topics stud-ied and how these topics are structured— home-work, assignments, exercises

• Use your child’s agenda to communicate with their teacher—ask questions, check for home-work tips, etc.

Guidance Notes

This time of year is very busy for Grade 8 students in par-ticular. Not only are they working hard in anticipation of their first report cards, but will soon be visiting High Schools and starting to think about which program would best suit their needs. Grade 8 students have been told on many occasions, that first term marks are extremely important and will not only be submitted with applications for alternative high school pro-grams, but will also be used to help choose high school courses.

Last week, all Grade 8 students received information sheets with regards to High School Programs and Open House Dates. It is important for both students and parents to attend any specialty high school programs or the high school located in the area in which you live, to learn more about the various programs available at that particular school. Application and course selection deadlines are also listed on the information page. If you live in the Turner Fenton area, their Open House is being held on Thursday, December 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the North Hall. On November 7th and 8th, I will be meeting with all Grade 8 students to talk about High School and the choices they have. In late November, students will be receiving a Course Selection Information Booklet as well as a rough Course Selection Sheet. Students, in consultation with parents and teachers, will be choosing appropriate courses that will enable them to be successful at the high school level. The final se-lection will be made in January and will be done online this year. When selecting which program and courses your child will take, consider the following statistics:

• Recent findings indicate that Ontario's secondary school dropout rate has climbed from 20% to 25% (2008).

• Of those students who graduate, 50% will immediately enter the workforce and 50% will continue their post-secondary education at either a college or university.

When choosing programs and courses for next year, it is important to keep in mind that there are many different Pathways to Success. Only 50% of all students will go on to college or university and only 25% of students who do go on to post-secondary will graduate with a degree or diploma. Many students will bene-fit from becoming involved in the trades, which are also a valued part of society today. Other students will become valuable and successful members of the workforce. It is important that you and your child discuss

which program would benefit your child the most and would allow him/her to follow their most appropriate pathway in life. On Wednesday, November 9th, we will be hosting a Grade 8 High School Information Night for parents of students who are cur-rently in Grade 8. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the gym, where infor-mation about transitioning to high school will be presented, along with a question period following the presentation. This is a night for parents only.

Please feel free to contact me at school if you have any fur-ther questions.

Terry Fox Run 2011

“If you have given a dollar you have been part of The Marathon of Hope.”

- Terry Fox

On September 28th, every Davis student participated in the Terry Fox run located at the Kiwanis Park. It was a beautifully warm day and our spirit was strong! Thanks to Mr. Ford-King and our Athletic Council for setting up and marshalling the course and to all the students who walked and ran, knowing we are doing our part to support cancer research. After collecting all of the money and pledge forms, We are proud to say that W.G. Davis raised an in-credible amount of $17,657.74!! We raised more money than last year and per student, the largest amount of money in the last 10 years! For many years, we have been one of the top 10 schools in all of Ontario to raise the most money and we are hope-ful our record will continue to stand with this year’s contribution. Thank you to all students and staff who made the effort to raise money and to the following students and classes who were the most successful! Congratulations to: Top Grade 7 Fundraisers: Yasmine 7G ($400.35) Maya 7A ($185.00) Ethan 7C ($155.00) Top Grade 8 Fundraisers: Michele 8D ($318.00) Jade 8J ($285.00) Zach 8B ($250.00)

Top Grade 7 Classes: 7G who raised $1345.34 7F who raised $1017.75 7J who raised $1008.87 Top Grade 8 Classes: 8F who raised $1500.40 8G who raised $1265.28 8D who raised $1203.91 On Friday, October 28th the entire school gathered to celebrate our fundraising efforts. A big thank you goes out to Mr. Campbell, who offered to have his head shaved if we reached our school goal but ended up with a smashing looking Mohawk instead. Thanks to Zach F. for assisting with the fabulous cut and making him a whole new man! Thank you to Mme. Graff, Mr. Noad and Mr. Rutter, who graciously offered to be dressed up by their class for raising over $1,000.00. We salute many other teachers who also lived up to their promises when their classes raised over $1000.00. Thank you to Ms. Gordon who baked cookies for her class; Mme Ryan who organized a Pizza and Electronic party; Mr. Hurlbut who allowed his class to dress him up for Hal-loween; Ms. Chu-Liddicoat who provided a lovely buffet breakfast on the day of the assembly; Mme Chyfetz who baked up a storm for a dessert party for her class; Mr. Laferriere and Mr. Lyons graciously agreed to dress up as opposing hockey fans much to the students’ delight! A special thank you to Ms. Datta who performed an amazing RAP routine because of a promise made to 8B! Students were also treated to a select group of their fellow students who performed some talented Terry Fox skits and songs for the audience. While there was a great deal of laughter and music during this assembly, the end result was incredible! Take a good look at the pictures to see the new and improved teachers at Davis! Thank you to all of our students and staff members for making the assembly and our 2011 fundraising effort so much fun! Finally, a big thank you goes out to a few of our members of Parent Council who graciously volun-teered to help count the money coming in for many days on end!! We look forward to meeting our goal next year!

A congratulations goes out to the Davis Cross Country Team who finished 5th overall out of 31 schools at the NPPHEA Fall Run on Wednesday October 19th. All the runners represented our school with excellent sportsmanship and courage. The conditions were cold, wet, and windy; providing each partici-pant with an extra set of challenges as they navigated the course. Here is a summary of each teams results. Thanks for a great season, Mr. Skinner, Mr. Campbell, and Ms. Caton
