INS IDE COVER

Twice a year, we have the honor of renewing our membership to TI. For some, it ’s as easy as writing a check (people still do this), giving cash (people still carry this) or sending money electronically to a club officer. For others, it is a constant reminder they must pay for something that may not provide value. Why wouldn’t Toastmasters, and specifically D55 provide worth to a member?

I conduct an advanced TLI training Educate to Motivate, and in this presentation, I guide an officer and leader to focus on their members. You can’t maintain or grow without members who find value in what you provide. How do we find out whether or not our members are happy, receiving what they want personally and or professionally, and once we find this out, what do we do about it?

I’m a big believer in “ The 5 Love Languages”, how we perceive our needs and our partner ’s needs, resulting in a more rewarding and fulfilling relationship.

How many of us filled out a Member Interest Survey when we joined Toastmasters so your club could better understand you? Some readers most definitely did, and I’m willing to bet just as many did not. However, how many of you have filled out this survey more than once since joining your home club? I could count on one hand the number of you who said ‘yes.’ When we see a club with dwindling numbers, we scratch our heads, wondering how this happened.

If we discount members who have life-event changes (moving, new job, or school that interferes with club meetings, etc.), that leaves us with members who “don’t have time”. Translation, Toastmasters is no longer relevant to them. Reading between the lines, your club may not have provided enough value. But do we know the reason why they left? How many of these members will tell us what they didn’t like or what we could have done to improve their experience?

What if we asked our members twice a year to articulate their experience over the prior six-months and whether or not we’re meeting their objectives and goals? Would our members be more apt to renew? Would we better understand how to help them achieve their full potential and be better equipped to do so? Think of it this way, if you’re in a relationship with another person and don’t take time to understand what they want and need, how do you expect that relationship to grow?

It sounds like communication may be the key to success in maintaining and growing a healthy relationship. Why don’t we use that same guiding principle and engage more intimately with our members via a bi-annual Member Interest Survey?

Have a comment, question, or concern? Drop me a line if you’re so inclined.

I promise not to charge you more than $0.05.

Convention Notes! There’s so much news to share from the 2020 Toastmasters International Convention held online Aug 24-29.

We’re looking forward to receiving more information about several items announced by the Toastmasters International Board of Directors. Here’s a

heads up on some of the important things that happened during the convention relevant to you, your club, and our district.

1.Mike Carr won the World Championship of Public Speaking! Mike is the 2nd champion fromDistrict 55 (David Henderson being the first in 2010). His speech was a master class in using theonline format to enhance your story. Mike has been a Toastmaster for 25 years and is a member ofAustin Toastmasters.

2.The International Board of Directors has decided that for Spring 2021, all Area, Division, andDistrict speech contests must be held online.

3.Clubs can have speech-a-thons again! Although clubs at the club level can only sponsor them, there are new allowances that permit clubs to partner with other clubs to hold a speech-a-thon event.

4.Districts will continue to hold events online, including training, continuing education, businessmeetings, and conferences.

5.District budgets were reduced this year, and changes made to how we can provide incentives and gifts to our members.

6.Districts are now allowed to charter online clubs. Want to have a Toastmasters club for yourfriends from college? How about all of your cousins and your favorite aunt? Maybe your remote co- workers worldwide? No matter where they’re located, if you can pull together 20 charter members, talk to Livya Mitchell, Club Growth Director, and she’ll get you headed in the right direction for fun times!

7.Evaluation tools for clubs and districts are coming out soon from Toastmasters International. We all know that we grow from feedback, so it’s exciting to have new member surveys designed to get feedback after the first 30 days of membership. There will also be a club officer and district leader evaluation forms.

8.Elections were held for International Officer and Director positions. Our district Trio interviewed all 22 candidates, laughing and learning along the way. Proposal A failed to gain the necessary votes, but Proposal B passed. The results of the elections and voting can be found on toastmasters.org.

9.Did I mention that Mike won the speech contest? Take the time to watch his speech in the contest finals. He’s a rock star!

If you haven’t watched the video of the opening session, education sessions, board briefing, and contests, they will continue to be available online for the remainder of the program year. Binge-watch the convention or catch a session or two at your leisure. Either way, you’ll find something that entertains you, teaches you, or speaks to you.

Enjoy the recordings while we have the opportunity!

Congratulations to Ms. Celina Sarandos-Castillo for her winning motivational graphic, which embodies our theme, “Having Fun, Getting it Done!” Many D55’ers voted on her design as the one we’ll use throughout the 2020-2021 program year.

I caught up with Celina briefly last week while she was in the midst of sending her kids back to school, meaning she was coming up with a curriculum to begin the homeschooling process.

When asked what inspired her to enter the contest she told me, “last year I created the club’s newsletter and because it was so well received my current VPE “voluntold” me to break out of her comfort zone and submit a drawing.”

Celina said drawing has always been a passion and somewhat of a hobby, and since she runs a children’s ministry it is an opportunity to show her creativity to another group of individuals.

Celina Sarandos-Castillo, CC, EC2Celina has been in Toastmasters four years and serves as President of Future Speakers on the Horizon (FSH) in San Antonio.

AND THE W INNER IS .. .

WHAT’S NEW IN TRAINING?We are wrapping up this season of Toastmaster Leadership Institute (TLI). Congratulations to all 39 clubs who had seven club Officers trained! You have qualified for the Super 7 Promotion to be published on tmd55.org soon! Way to go! Furthermore, your club names will post on the District 55 Recognition page.

Shout out to the additional 131 clubs who had at least four officers trained. Club Officer Training has shown to have a direct correlation to overall club success and viability. If you review the clubs’ list on our club Performance tab, you will find that most of the well-trained clubs have been around for a while. (The lower the club number, the older the club.)

We are making a concerted effort to build up the entire training program based on your feedback in two key areas:

• Morevarietyandpracticalknowledgeandlesstheoryinallourtraining–bothatTLIsandinContinuingEducation

• Engagemoremembersandtrainers,especiallynewones,toincreasetheknowledgebasefortheentireDistrict.

These improvements are designed to enhance Program Quality for every club, so you grow and retain more happy members. We want to provide you with the tools to 1) run better meetings, 2) build strong Club Officers, and 3) develop new skills.

Please go to the District 55 Continuing Education page for further details. You can read all about the new CE program (“Training Tuesday”) here. We also have some excellent courses already lined up or in the works. Week one is devoted to Leadership training. Week two will help you with Communications skills, beginners and advanced. Week three is for Related Skills, like PowerPoint training and using Social Media effectively. The PR team is planning to host several classes on how to use social media and Toastmaster branding. Week Four is devoted to Pathways training, both Basecamp Managers and beginners.

Please let us know what else you’d like to see available in Continuing Education. If you enjoy teaching or know someone you think would be good at it, please reach out to me. I would love to hear from you.

PINCH ME! Did Mike Carr just win the 2020 World Championship of Public Speaking?

District 55 keeps rolling, and we’re off to an exciting start. We have a new addition to the family. Please help me welcome Buzz Toastmasters Club, which chartered August 13.

As I sit at my desk, I am thankful for the five clubs I am a member of. I think about how important each club has been in my personal and professional development. I reflect upon the memories I’ve made, the friendships I treasure, and the skills I have gained.

When you reflect upon your experience as a Toastmaster, what matters to you? What have you gained, and how have you benefited? What are your plans, and how will your continued investment in your Toastmaster journey help propel you to a brighter future? This month of September, I ask you to ponder these questions and consider reinvesting in your personal and professional growth.

I am also pleased to announce the addition of more members to our Club Growth and

Retention team.

I asked K72 Area Director Art Monzingo for ideas on how to increase membership. As we head toward September, dues will soon be paid again. Even in difficult economic times, how can we creatively retain and gain members?Monzingo confirms that membership is down, likely due to the pandemic and the switch to virtual. But virtual has some advantages: you save time and don’t have to travel. “I think it positions us to bring in folks that we normally couldn’t. For example, one of my club’s former members who now lives in Burnet has rejoined.”Art went on to say, “I think reaching out to friends and former members with personal invitations will be the best way to bring folks in. An open house is one way to do this. Consider designating a meeting as ‘bring a friend’ and doing this monthly for clubs meeting weekly.”Thank you, Art, for your openness and your creative ideas to increase membership. District, now it’s your turn. We want to hear from you. What thoughts do you have?

Laura Oelofse, IP3Manor Toastmasters Club D55 is were I currently serve as Club President. I also serve as SAA for Salt Spring Toastmasters, International Online Club in D21, Canada.

In this photo Laura receiving her IP level 2 award from Manor Toastmasters Club President Marva Bennett, DTM, MS1.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 MINUTES

This road less traveled started in September 2018 for me, when an aspiring DTM was looking to charter a new club in my small, fast-growing city of Manor, Texas.

At a community coffee business meeting in a local restaurant, it was then that I met Marva Bennett for the first time and encountered her passion and zeal for Toastmasters. I was invited to a few demo meetings where I answered my first table topic on “bridges” and became sold on Toastmasters. I joined Marva’s fledgling group of chartering members and became the VP of Membership. I proactively attended my first Toastmasters Leadership Institute training in December 2018 to better understand my officer role and in March 2019 we chartered Manor Toastmasters.

It was here I embarked on my Innovative Planning path and enjoyed the speeches, feedback, evaluations given and received, and the thrill of engaging the audience. Supporting my fellow Toastmasters has been a delight while we navigate the intricacies of the digital world. I also joined James Falcons, ACB, CL Saltspring Canada Toastmasters International Online Group, which is the Table Topics mecca of clubs and became a Zoom Master. I’ve met so many Toastmasters from different countries and clubs. Salt Springs Online Club is a verifiable melting pot of cultures. It has been an enormously enriching experience and I get to go around the world in 80 minutes every other Sunday.

Manor grew as a club and reached 29 members before the March 2020 renewal deadline, attrition due to COVID-19 took its toll, as with most clubs. Still, we managed to recover a large number of members, reinstate them, and add a group of recruits that we were able to attract via our social media activity and long term relationship building in the community by June 2020.

Manor is thriving as a club due to the unparalleled commitment of our officers and valuable members, a strong PR Strategy, and a well-organized system for enrolling new members. A strong mentoring program from our DTMs helps to shape the quality of the club.

The growth and nurturing of our Manor club has led to us being a Distinguished Club within our first three months of existence, and this past year, we achieved Elite Presidents Distinguished status. I follow the tradition Marva created, with a vision of a growing a vibrant community club where meetings are welcoming, engaging, and encouraging to everyone so that they leave with a sense of “this was time well spent.” I’ve found that members who stay involved with the club,

embrace their Pathways learning experience, enjoy their mentoring experience, and become involved in the club’s executive functions, their growth is tangible.

Involved members are happy members and easily retained. Connie Hoffmann DTM has recently offered her Pathways training course to our members. Our new

class of recruits has immersed themselves in their Pathways, and through their first

level in their chosen Path, this has accelerated Pathways adoption.

For myself, having Marva as a role model and inspirational leader, and Reed Stoddard as a mentor shapes my Toastmaster experience.

My reason for being a Toastmaster is the sheer joy I find in interacting with like-minded people and how that enhances my sense of well-being and the sense of adventure in encountering other Toastmasters on their journey. My personal growth has been very satisfying as I surprise myself with every new challenge.

Lorenzo Peve: Pre and post-COVID, what does membership look like for Central Austin Toastmasters?

Alex Wilk : Before COVID, we had around 30-40 active members and now we average 15-20.

LP: What are some of the reasons for this drop in membership?

AW: I believe most people do not think [virtual] is the same experience and people don’t find as much value. We struggle to feel the audience, hear the laughs, and see the audience. However, I still believe there is value as online meetings will be around for quite some time. It is an entirely different skill set and a practice that must happen to be efficient these days.

LP: I agree 100% on how it feels. Have you tried unmuting everyone during the meetings?

AW: No, because we struggle with background noise or someone forgetting to mute themselves. But it is a good idea, and we should try that. Something else I just thought of is the social aspect of meeting online vs. in person. You do not have the typical one on one before or after meeting chit-chat, where you get to know people’s motivation or backgrounds. During the meetings, I try to chat with the new members, but [it] doesn’t seem to have the same effect.

LP: What does new membership look like since the Pandemic, and why did they join?

AW: Seven new members have joined since we went virtually. Some of them joined because they needed to become better online speakers, others I’m not yet certain.

LP: Are you looking at different strategies to help maintain or even increase membership?

AW: At the moment, we are working on a survey to be distributed to the current and past members to understand their struggles, thoughts, and the reasons why they left so we can develop a better action plan. To those that lost some of the motivation, I would like to remind them that it is important to keep a routine. If you leave TI, it will be harder to come back. Remember that this environment is a great space for us to practice a different and needed skill. Any job interview, product sale, project update is going to happen virtually for now.

LP: Let me close it with the following. According to Alex, a good speech is?

AW: A good speech is a subject or topic, that the speaker is genuinely passionate about.

MEMBERSH IP DUR ING A PANDEM IC by Lorenzo Peve

Dealing with membership and attendance dropping is an issue for many clubs. I chatted with Alex Wilk , VPM of Central Austin Toastmasters, to discuss the situation in his club, potential solutions, and the challenges of being in this leadership position.

Wait, Stop! Not Another Pathways Article!

When Pathways was first announced, it took many of us by surprise. We were angry, worried, and uncertain on what this meant for our goals and the future of Toastmasters. I was just like you. When I first heard that some new program was going to be introduced that would redesign the entire structure of Toastmasters, I was upset. Actually, I was furious . My plans to get my DTM in 3 years crumbled. I felt that all my time in Toastmasters up until that point had been a waste of effort, since I would have to start my education journey over to get the new DTM.

But then I learned what Pathways would offer, how relatable it would be for my goals and aspirations, and how it would help innovate the way we were currently learning. I also realized that practicing speaking and learning the skills I had on the traditional program could never be a waste. I had already grown so much and would continue to grow. Obviously, as you can tell by my close affiliation with the program, I have since embraced Pathways and I want to share with you, the top 5 reasons why I love and get excited about this program.

Everything we do these days is online. We’re working daily on our computers, and when we’re not working, our social engagements continue online. Because of this, everyone is connected, nearly around the clock.

It begs the question: How can we leverage social media to win the masses and increase Toastmaster membership? And, how can we get people who want to practice public speaking skills into Toastmaster clubs?

Let’s face it; it ’s easier than ever to find a Toastmasters meeting, just about anywhere. Even if you can’t connect locally, you can drop into a meeting anywhere around the world virtually, by visiting the website. The pandemic opens the doors to actively reaching a broader audience. Because our meetings are on Zoom, it is a smoother transition to making a social outreach. According to Omnicore, in 2020, 8 out of 10 Americans are on social media, and most have accounts on eight different platforms.

I recently spoke with Lilly Smith, District Social Media Strategist, and VPPR of West Austin II, to discuss.

Smith says, “We can utilize social platforms to appeal to different ages and tailor the message accordingly across platforms.”

NA: What do you want to accomplish with social media?

LS: Consistency, not a nose-dive. Current times have put Toastmasters in a place where membership has declined, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Smith wants to creatively reach people in places where they interact, on platforms like Instagram and possibly TikTok.

NA: Who are you seeking to reach?

LS: All, but certainly people in their 20’s-30’s. Get ‘em when they are young and keep them throughout their Toastmasters journey.

Smith wants to work with Christine Moore, District 55’s Social Media Coordinator, to procure membership advancement across the district and looks forward to visiting other clubs.

District: We want to hear from you. What social methods are you using to reach new members? We’d love your input, and most notably, we want to hear your success stories. We look forward to hearing from you: [email protected]

HOW DO WE WARM-UP SOCIAL MEDIA TO WIN THE MASSESby Nicole Akers

I joined Toastmasters in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1978 because I had a fear of public speaking. Within one year, I was elected Club President and appointed to serve as District 19, Secretary and Treasurer. I went on to earn my DTM, a Presidential Citation, and serve in every District office position. In 1986-87 we were awarded District Distinguished.

When I came to the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas twenty-five years ago, I felt I was a seasoned Toastmaster. I thought I had done it all. I could finally join a Toastmasters club as a member, not serve as an officer or perform other duties. However, I quickly learned there were no clubs in McAllen or Pharr for me to join. I did not know anyone who lived or worked here, so I decided to present a 4-week Speechcraft course. I found a free meeting room at the old McAllen Library and free promotion in The Monitor newspaper. Eight people attended that first week. Then I presented another Speechcraft the following week. In 1998, with the help of residents, the first club I chartered was in McAllen, and I became a member of District 55. Over the last twenty years, I’ve chartered three other clubs. (Metro Club in McAllen, HUB City Club in Pharr, and Alpha Club in McAllen)

In April, all three clubs started meeting on Zoom. Since many of our paid members had full-time jobs, we quickly learned our Gen-Z crowd, along with our Baby Boomers, did not have time to meet. Three teenagers joined Alpha Club. Eric Gonzalez, now 20, is the Club President and Zoom Host, and two 19-year olds are club officers. They have kept the club alive and energized by attending every Zoommeeting and other club meetings. Thanks to Zoom, we’ve had guests from Florida and California joinour meetings. And, I’ve recruited my baby brother, age 86, who lives in Lincoln, Nebraska.

As a 90-year old and a 42-year member of Toastmasters, these young people, our seasoned Toastmasters, and Zoom have made this one of my most joyful years!
