    WHAT IS ANDROID?

    An open-source software stack for mobile devices

    Based upon a modified version of Linux kernal

    Google acquired Android Inc. in 2005

    Collaborated with Open Handset Alliance: HTC, Intel, LG,Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Vodafone,etc

    Applications: Written in Java and Google-developed Java libraries, no JVM in

    the platform and Java byte code is not executed

    Java classes are compiled into Dalvik executables and run on theDalvik virtual machine

    SMS Trojan In August 2010, Kaspersky Lab reported about an SMS Trojan

    called Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer once installed, sends out SMS text messages without the users

    knowledge or consent.

    only Russian Android users got affected.

    Google issues a security patch

    Malicious apps In 1st March 2011, Googlepulled 58 malicious apps from the

    Android Market, only after being downloaded to 260,000 devices

    How they do it?

    >> Took a couple of popular free apps from the market, injected rootexploits into them and republished

    but Googlebelieves that only device-specific information, namely

    thephones IMEI number, was compromised and that nopersonal data or account information was ever transferred.
