All this freshness includes our excellent selection of “foodie” members whose culinary skills are world class. The familiar phrase proclaim-ing that “We make what we sell” is more than just a slogan. For our members, it is a way of life that em-bodies creativity, community, entre-preneurial aspiration, and commit-ment to their craft be it Agriculture, Craft, or Food. On any given Saturday, you could find artisans offering furniture that is hand-built in fine, rustic, or primitive styles. Jewelry artisans, cera-mists and fine artists can be found along-side other crafters with unique artistic cre-ations Our commitment to community extends beyond the bounds of our Satur-day market, too. We offer several non-profits the opportunity to reach out to our customers. Among our Community Ser-vice members, we include the Rogue Val-ley Humane Society, The Audubon Society, Rotary, and our local school districts. Grants Pass Growers' Market is the business side of the Southern Ore-gon Growers Association, a 501c3.

Depending on which one of the founding members you talk to, our organization will be celebrating our 40th year in the next year or two (or three). Grants Pass Growers’ Market sum-mer season runs from mid-March to the end of October and is located outdoors in the “Cricket Lot” (public parking lot) on the corners of 4th St and F St behind the Post Office in downtown Grants Pass. Days are Saturday ONLY between 9AM and 1PM. For the last four years we have operated our Winter Market, starting in November at the Josephine County Fair-grounds and every year our customers rave about it. Each year brings the best that our region has to offer. Local customers with lifelong passion for the Growers’ Market seek out existing favorites and aspiring new members to form a weekly Saturday morning event unmatched in Southern Oregon. Visiting out-of-towners frequently comment about how they wish that their communities had a market like Grants

Sorry About That:The Language of Public ApologyBy Edwin L. Battistella

People do bad things. They misspeak, mislead, and misbehave. But what makes a successful apology? Author

Battistella analyzes public apologies within American popular culture and offers fasci-nating stories behind them. He uses these examples to demonstrate the ways in which language creates sincere or insincere apologies.

Oregon Representative Greg Walden joined a group of city officials and community

leaders for a tour of the former loca-tion of the Spalding & Son Mill. The $200,000 grant came through the Environmental Protec-tion Agency’s Brownsfields program that provides grants and technical assistance to communities, states, tribes and others to assess, safely clean up and sustainably reuse con-taminated properties. With a lack of large proper-ties within the city, the 61 acres could be suitable location for an industrial park. The site needs some costly im-provements with water, sewer and street improvements. The grant will help provide a process of accessing the needs of cleanup of the site.

Light the Storefront Downtown Program

To encourage Downtown window lighting af-ter hours, the City of Grants Pass is offering a grant incentive up to 50% matching grant

funds (maximum $1,000) to downtown merchants between C Street to the North and M Street to the South between 4th and 8th Streets. This is to help local merchants illuminate the storefronts to show off merchandise at night while the City is still bustling with local diners and to cre-ate an atmosphere for window-shopping.

Building Façade Matching Grant Fund

Grants Pass possesses a unique downtown en-vironment that centers on a historic district with buildings that date back to the turn of

the 20th century. The purpose of the Building Façade Match-ing Grant Fund is to provide grants for restoration/renovation of these buildings and others in desig-nated areas within the City of Grants Pass. It is the intent of the City to encourage property owners of commercial buildings to restore the exterior facades of the building to the original design and character. Grant eligible projects are limited to a one time maximum matching grant up to $5,000. The buildings must be located within the City of Grants Pass Urban Growth Boundary along one of the major thoroughfares. These routes include the Central Business District and 6th and 7th Streets from the I-5 inter-change to the Rogue River.

Ride the Rogue, Southern Oregon’s Premier cycling event, takes place this year on Saturday, September 23rd. For the first time all routes and rest stops will be along the Rogue River. The ride will not only live up to the name but will allow vis-iting riders to enjoy our scenic beauty. Within the first mile of all the routes, cyclist will be riding the Greenway trail taking in the views of the Rogue River. This greenway is the portion that has been built through the efforts of the Rogue River Gre-enway Organization and the monies they have raised from past Ride the Rogue events.

Ride the Rogue is the only fundraiser for the Rogue River Greenway. The monies raised from this event are used to obtain grants for the fur-thering of the greenway. The organization has plans to build a greenway that would connect to Grants Pass. The most recent grant that was ob-tained will finish the connection with the City of Gold Hill by the year 2021. At its completion will connect to the Bear Creek Greenway trail.

This year Ride the Rogue has 4 routes withoptions for every rider. • The 20 mile route is considered a flat easy ride. It can be ridden with any style of bike and is something even the most novice of riders will enjoy. •The 40 mile, metric (62.2) and full century riders will enjoy a few hill climbs along the routes.

The best part comes at the finish in Palmer-ton Park, in Rogue River. There will be a BBQ meal served by Taylor’s of Cave Junction, a beer garden with craft brews served by JD’s pub of Grants Pass and a band playing rock n roll music for cyclists to enjoy.
