Dear JVS Friends and Supporters,
Looking back at this past fiscal year, we are very proud to share the
accomplishments of our clients and staff. JVS is committed to helping
our clients gain new skills, find great jobs, climb career ladders, and achieve
economic success. With robust growth in the Massachusetts economy and
demand for skilled workers rising, our focus on creating Pathways to Success,
the theme of this annual report, is more opportune than ever.
Jewish Vocational Service prides itself on the breadth of its services, and we
provide high-quality opportunities for people from all walks of life to gain
new skills, find better jobs, and achieve greater economic success. When
a refugee fleeing his or her home country, a mid-life professional seeking
to gain new skills, or a young adult with a disability enters our Center for
Economic Opportunity in downtown Boston or one of our growing satellite
sites in Hyde Park, East Boston, and Lawrence, they are greeted with respect
and offered appropriate pathways to success.
In this year’s report you’ll read about some of the innovative pathways that
we offer: our Adult Education Pathway, our partnership with Combined
Jewish Philanthropies in the Anti-Poverty Initiative, opportunities available
to our refugee and immigrant clients, and a new program to help individuals
maintain access to food stamps and find gainful employment. Our many
employer partners are also vital to our clients’ long-term success.
JVS serves nearly 20,000 people each year, and we strive to help each
individual create a pathway to success utilizing her or his unique talents.
We are committed to helping all clients achieve a secure economic future
and realize their personal American dreams.
We are grateful to our many supporters listed in this year’s report who
help make this possible. We appreciate your support of JVS as we look
toward the year ahead. Together, we will help many others build their skills,
achieve economic success, and meet the growing talent needs of our many
employer partners.
Sincerely,
Letter From Our CEO And Chair

At JVS, we strive to help each client find his or her unique
pathway to success. Below are examples of some of
the pathways we offer our clients as they begin their
individual journeys to economic success.

Adult Education Pathway: Our integrated
education pathway begins with our Adult
Diploma Pathway, which provides students with
a diploma from the Boston Public Schools. As
students near graduation, they are eligible to
co-enroll in our Bridges to College program and
receive college credit as they transition to Bunker
Hill Community College or Quincy College.
CareerPath Now: is designed to help people
maintain their eligibility for food stamp benefits,
allowing them to focus on readying themselves
for gainful employment.
Anti-Poverty Initiative: In collaboration with
Combined Jewish Philanthropies, JVS serves as
a strong partner in the Anti-Poverty Initiative.
Our Career Navigators work with economically
vulnerable members of the Jewish community
to assist them as they re-enter the job market,
while our Financial Opportunity Coaches help
them create pragmatic budgets and work
toward securing their financial independence.
When his family fell on hard times, Rich Simon turned to CJP’s Anti-Poverty Initiative for help. Rich was referred to JVS for career guidance, and JVS helped him find employment.
CareerPath Now helped Ronel (right) maintain his eligibility for food stamp benefits. he is now enrolled in JVS’s Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Ronel is pictured with Shevonne Commock (left), JVS Career Navigator.
Refugee Services: Each year, our Refugee Services
Department empowers over 500 clients to learn
English and find employment in Boston. Each
client works with a career coach to secure a job
and create his or her individualized pathway to
success. Some of our refugee clients continue their
path by enrolling in one of our vocational skills
training programs, including our Food Service,
Bank Teller, Certified Nursing Assistant, and
Pharmacy Technician training programs.
JVS Food Service Training Program graduates and staff. The program has provided participants with work experience and ServSafe certification for the past 20 years.

1. Carbonite CEO Mohamad Ali and HBS
Professor Joseph Fuller joined Jerry Rubin in
June for our second Economic Opportunity
Forum. After introductory remarks from the
Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s Jim
Rooney, the three discussed strategies for
solving America’s skills gap.
2. Parents and children found a new way to help
out JVS last year at Family Philanthropy Day
events. Groups stuffed backpacks with school
supplies for children of our refugee clients, and
the children also created cards with messages
of encouragement for our clients.
3. The JVS Tax Center offers free tax-preparation
services for individuals with a household
income below $54,000. In 2016, over 500
individuals were served through the Tax
Center with the help of over 45 volunteers.

4. Transitions to Work received the International
Association for Jewish Vocational Services
2016 Program Award in April. Madeline
Wenzel, Director of Disability Services at JVS,
accepted the award on behalf of Transitions to
Work. We thank CJP and the Ruderman Family
Foundation for their ongoing partnership
which makes Transitions to Work possible.
5. This year we launched the Obermayer
Innovation Fund, which supports research,
exploration, and piloting of new programs at
JVS. This year, three different departments
launched new programs: 1) using cell phones
to improve communication with clients
through texting, 2) a special credit card sleeve
that encourages savings, and 3) a gift card
incentive program to encourage clients to
report job finding success. We are grateful to
Judy Obermayer for her generous support and
guidance on this project.
6. In June, we celebrated the graduation of over
60 students from our Bridges to College and
English for Academic Success programs. We
were honored to be joined by State Rep. Aaron
Michlewitz, who congratulated the graduates
and attested to the positive effect these
programs have on the economy and adult
education.

“The Art and Jo Grady Scholarship fund, which
assists adults in the JVS Bridges to College
program in their pursuit of higher education,
was established several years ago in memory of
my parents. When Dan and I were planning our
wedding we knew that, in lieu of gifts, we would
ask our guests to support this fund. We were
thrilled to be able to honor my parents and
assist deserving students in this way.”

An inspiring evening benefiting JVS programs
In May, we joined together with corporate
partners, client ambassadors, and supporters
to celebrate the successes of JVS and our
incredible clients. Together, we raised over
$375,000 to benefit JVS programs. We were proud
to honor Deborah B. Goldberg, Massachusetts
State Treasurer, and longtime board member
Michael Winter with the 2016 Community
Leadership Award for their commitment to
social justice, empowerment, and JVS.
We were inspired by Yoldie Feona, a JVS client
who completed our Pharmacy Technician Training
program. Yoldie shared her experience as a single
mother who emigrated from Haiti and has now
found a job at Walgreens. As of the printing
of this report, she has been promoted twice.
Entertainment was provided by JVS Bridges to
College graduate Maria Espinosa and her band
Todo Bien.

JVS is fortunate to have philanthropic partners
that share our values and have a substantial
history of funding our work. The Ratshesky
Foundation, founded by A. C. Ratshesky in 1916,
is one of those partners. As a philanthropist,
Mr. Ratshesky was committed to removing
the barriers to economic and social justice for
Jewish and other immigrant groups.
The Foundation is now led by Cap’s
descendants, who carry on the Ratshesky
family’s values of working with
immigrant populations. We congratulate
the foundation on its centennial and
thank them for their long-term support.
