INTROIT— Psalm 74 The People standing

Why, O God, have you cast us off forever? Why does your anger blaze at the sheep of your own pasture? Remember your flock which you claimed long ago. The tribe you redeemed to be your own possession, The mountain of Zion where you made your dwelling. Turn your steps to these places that are utterly ruined! The enemy has laid waste the whole of the Holy place. Your foes have made uproar in the midst of your assembly; They have set up their emblems as tokens there. They have wielded their axes on high, As at the entrance to a grove of trees. He established a decree in Jacob; In Israel he set up a law. To our fathers he gave a command, To make it known to their children. That the next generation might know it, The children yet to be born.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Lesson: 1 Kings 19: 9a. 11-13

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the LORD said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the LORD; the LORD will be passing by.” A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the LORD— but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake— but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire— but the LORD was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

A period of silence follows the reading.

PSALM 85

I will hear what the Lord God speaks; He speaks of peace for his people and his faithful. His salvation is near for those who fear him, And his glory will dwell in our land. Merciful love and faithfulness have met; Justice and peace have kissed. Faithfulness shall spring from the earth, And justice look down from heaven. Also the Lord will bestow his bounty, And our earth shall yield its increase. Justice will march before him, And guide his steps on the way.

Epistle: Romans 9: 1-5 Brothers and sisters: I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie; my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites; theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; theirs the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION —— Stand.

Gospel Lesson: Matthew 14: 22-33 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once [Jesus] spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I;* do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water to-ward Jesus. But when he saw how [strong] the wind was he became frightened; and, begin-ning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith,* why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” Gospeler: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

PROFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

all bow during these two lines:

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus,

I believe that you are present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love you above all things and I desire you in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

As though you were already there,

I embrace you and unite myself wholly to you;

permit not that I should ever be separated from you.

Amen
