CUNNAN NEWSLETTER5July 2018

It is a common observation about the Indian Democracy that the

fever, fervour and hullabaloo that is created among the populace during elections, especially during campaigning and on the day on voting, dies down the day after voting is done. A democracy needs the enthusiasm of the people to be sustained throughout the tenure of an elected government. The people should be aware of the laws being created by the representatives in the Parliament and the respective Assemblies in the States and should also know as to how these laws affect us directly and indirectly. There should also be an evaluation by the population of a democracy of the likely future impact of any law that is enacted.

It is a sad fact that many who have voted a representative to power fail to recollect whom they have voted for and are far removed from the happenings of the Legislature. To make the students, who are the citizens of tomorrow, more aware of the electoral process, the Electoral Literacy Club was inaugurated on 25th January 2018. The purpose of this club is to educate the students in democratic practices so that they elect exemplary leaders in the future.

Mr.Srinivasan, Head, RMKV Group of Institutions highlighted many facts that we usually miss when we discuss democracy. Firstly, an electorate must be well informed since they are going to elect legislators who are going to make laws which will affect us

on a daily basis. Hence a well-informed electorate has to question prospective legislators to be clear about their policies for the next five years. Secondly, we as the electorate should keep the legislator(s) informed on the areas that are in need of legislation. Thirdly, once the tenure of a legislator is completed a detailed evaluation has to be conducted by the electorate before they choose to vote for him/her again.

If the performance of the legislator turns out to be below par or if the legislator has overpromised and under-delivered, then other options have to be explored by the electorate. When such monitoring and evaluation mechanisms are in place each legislator’s tenure will be marked by performance. A legislator will have to avoid the theatrics that he/she indulges in during campaigning or when faced by a crisis.

The Chief Guest, Mr. Srinivasan

gave the student volunteers Electoral Literacy Badges. The volunteers took an oath that they will use their right to vote wisely and will also educate others in doing the same. The Club functions based on the rules laid down by the Government of Tamilnadu. Its primary objective is to make the students aware of the responsibilities of a citizen in a democracy and to make them conscious of the importance of their rights that they will exercise on the day of voting.

Conducting an election in India is a gargantuan task and involves a lot of money, time and energy of a large number of government servants and a lot of materials which include Electronic Voting Machines, stationery and signboards. To highlight the seriousness of this process a mock-polling was conducted. The layout of a polling station was created in Cunnan Auditorium.

The Polling Station had a Presiding Officer and other polling officials. The students of the first year cast their vote. The students cast their votes into a ballot box since an EVM was not available. Those who cast their vote received a mark of ink on their left hand forefinger. Thus all the processes of real-time voting were mimicked. Once the voting process was completed, the counting was done and the results were declared. The students thus realized the importance of the voting process and the seriousness of the motto “Your Voice is Your Vote.”

ELECTORAL LITERACY CLUB- Your Vote is your voice

Its primary objective is to make the students aware

of the responsibilities of a citizen in a

democracy and to make them conscious of the

importance of their rights that they will exercise on

the day of voting.

Readers have already been introduced to the exploits of

our cricket team in the January 2018 issue of the Newsletter. Well, our boys have done it again- this time matching their skills against established heavyweights like D.B.Jain College.

It all started like this: D.B.Jain College usually organizes a cricket tournament called the REPUBLIC DAY CUP – 2018. The matches are held in D.B.Jain College grounds and a lot of colleges vie for this trophy since it is considered a very prestigious trophy to have in one’s kitty. The tournament was held on the 22nd and 23rd of January 2018. The path to the final was not easy but our boys showed a lot of grit and determination to reach there. All matches in the league stage and the Quarter finals were played in the 15-over a side format. The Semi-Finals and the Final were 20-over Matches.

The first match was played against Presidency College on 22nd January 2018. The opposition won the toss and chose to bat and put 103 runs on board losing 6 wickets in 15 overs. Our boys overhauled this total in 14.4 overs losing 6 wickets with Kabilan of III B.C.A. scoring a decisive 20 runs. This win earned us a place in the quarter finals.

The Quarter-Final Match was held in the afternoon of 22nd January

and our boys were pitted against Sathyabama University. It is no secret that Sathyabama University is a far better placed team on paper but our team had put in a lot of hard work and had spent hours in deliberate practice as is testified by all those who have seen our team practice in the nets. The boys of Sathyabama won the toss and chose to bat and were all out for 106 runs in 15 overs. Our team lost some wickets but disciplined batting by Kabilan helped us go past the total in 14.4 overs. This time Kabilan did well with the ball and took five wickets. This earned us a berth in the Semi-Finals against Patrician College.

The Semi-Final Match was held in the forenoon of 23rd January 2018. Our team won the toss and chose to bat scoring a defendable total of 117 losing eight wickets in 20 overs. Our boys dominated their opponents and bowled a tight line thus drying up chances to score runs. The batsmen of Partician College in an effort to increase the scoring rate committed mistakes which resulted in the regular fall of wickets. Patrician College was bowled out for 87 runs and were thus defeated by a huge margin of 30 runs. Mr.Maniganda Raja of the Department of Electronics Science starred with the bat scoring 19 runs and Mr.G.Kabilan bowled brilliantly and took 3 wickets.

The Final Match was held

in the afternoon of the same day and we were up against the hosts D.B.Jain College. The hosts have an enviable record in cricket and they were playing in their home ground. However our boys did not let these facts weigh down on their chances to win. Our boys won the toss and chose to bat. They scored 118 runs losing 8 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Dinesh Kumar of II B.Com scored 25 runs while Barath of I B.A. Economics and Kabilan of BCA added 21 runs and 20 runs each to the total. D.B.Jain College made a good start but they began to lose wickets. They showed a lot of batting depth and gave a nail-biting match to the spectators. However they fell 4 runs short of the total ending up with a score of 114 runs losing 9 wickets. Dinesh Kumar of III B.C.A and Mohan of III B.Com took 2 wickets each and ensured that our college won.

The hosts losing the final was a surprise to everyone. This got special mention from the Chief Guest Dr.S.Kamalakannan, Principal of Annai Theresa Arts and Science College, Thirukazhakundram, who is also the Physical Director of the college. It will be of interest to the readers to know that he is an alumnus of our college and studied in the Department of Economics and passed out in the year 1992. He was all praise for our team while handing over the winner’s trophy to us.

Our Boys do it again

The 23rd College Day of Shift-2 was celebrated on 29th March 2018. Prof.B.Chinnappa Chetty was invited

as the Chief Guest. Prof. Chinnappa Chetty served as the Principal of our institution for over a decade from 1991 to 2002 and was instrumental in bringing in the self-supporting courses under the then Secretary Sri M.V.Cunniah Chetty. The Shift-2 which was started with a strength of 35 students in the year 1995 now admits 1150 students in 14 Undergraduate, 4 Post-Graduate and 1 M.Phil. Programmes every year.

Prof.B.Chinappa Chetty in his speech became nostalgic about his days as Principal. He expressed his deep satisfaction and happiness at the tremendous growth that the college has undergone since 1995. He then distributed prizes to the students. The college day came to an end with a cultural presentation by the students of SEEFAC (Seethama Fine Arts Club) which included a classical dance performance, a folk dance and a Pantomime show.

The 28th Parent-Teacher Meeting for Shift-1 and the 23rd Parent-Teacher Meeting for Shift-2 was

conducted on 31st March 2018. The practice of parents meeting the faculty of the departments has created a positive synergy between the two and ensures that the students’ progress is regularly monitored. This meeting also acts as a deterrent to the occasionally indifferent behaviour that some students indulge in.

The parents met the faculty of the department in which their wards are studying and expressed their concerns in connection with the academic progress of their wards. In the meeting held in the Cunnan Auditorium the parents’ suggestions were sought with regard to infrastructure and other amenities provided to the students. The parents expressed their sense of appreciation for providing very good amenities to the students. The sensitivity that our institution shows towards the individual problems of students was also appreciated. There were suggestions given to start more Post Graduate programmes so that the students need not seek admission in far flung colleges in the city. The parents were given an assurance that their suggestions will be incorporated in the coming academic years.
