Letter from the President Greetings family and friends, As I sit down to write my annual letter to our family, my heart is heavy with the sad news of the sudden passing of Frank Rader. Frank, as you know, was the husband of Liz Boyd Rader and father of Ellie Rader. The Rader family has been a big part of our family reunion for many years now. Liz served as president of our family board. Frank, for years, spend hours digitizing our Boyd genealogies. His CDs of all the information are available today. He was in constant communication with hundreds of relations, keeping records of their ties to the Boyd Family. We all remember the enormous sheets on display at our reunions, each containing the genealogical charts of our families, tracing the generations back to the respective son or daughter of Alexander Boyd, the Elder. I think most of us never realized how much time and effort Frank put into compiling these records and adding to them. It was something he worked on every day, and his efforts reflected the love he had for his wife and family. Frank Rader's contribution to the Boyd Family Foundation was enormous. We will never be able to thank him enough for all he did for us, nor will we be able to find someone to fill his shoes. We were blessed to have had him as a part of our family, and we will miss him tremendously. We are now busy planning our annual family reunion. Once again we have decided to have the event on the last weekend of September, the 26th and 27th. On Saturday afternoon we have planned a tour of two local plantations, Prestwould Plantation and Cedar Grove Plantation. Both of these plantations are true Mecklenburg County treasures. The Boyd Tavern will also be open for the afternoon. There you can visit family, look at genealogical records, or just enjoy a glass of iced tea and cookies on the porch. In addition, if anyone would like to play golf in the afternoon, we can make arrangements for you at the Kinderton Country Club in Clarksville. Saturday evening will be capped off with our annual Bar-B-Que. This year my husband, Jamie Rawles, is going to cook a whole pig at the tavern! Come help with the cooking!! On Sunday, there will be coffee and donuts at the tavern before church. Our service will start at 11 A.M. with the Rev. Russell Burchard returning to lead us in worship. After church we will take a quick family photo and have lunch at the tavern. Please send us your reunion registration as soon as possible. We would also like you to include your e'-mail address to expedite updates and information about the reunion. We all are blessed to have this annual event that brings our family together to learn from and about each other and to forge close ties. I look forward to seeing you all on the 26th .. ANNUAL BOYD FAMILY REUNION

See you there!

Letter from the President

Greetings family and friends,

As I sit down to write my annual letter to our family, my heart is heavy with the sad news of the sudden passing of Frank Rader. Frank, as you know, was the husband of Liz Boyd Rader and father of Ellie Rader. The Rader family has been a big part of our family reunion for many years now. l Gifts to the Boyd Tavern

Mrs. Sally Boyd Reveley Hudgins makes donation to The Boyd Tavern

Mrs. Sally Boyd Reveley Hudgins is one of the oldest Boyd relations at 9 3 years old and the third generation in her mother's family with the name Sally Boyd. Salley lives in Martin, TN, a small college town, and is happy there driving around as she says, "staying out of the p(lths of the texting college students". She has a daughter who lives in Tampa, FL and her son lives about 30 miles away, but close enough to be her right-hand helper. Her grandchildren are scattered about the country; a grandaughter in Pittsburgh, a grandson in Los Angeles and another grandson nearby in Martin, TN

Sally and her late husband, Edmund Hudgins, always supported the Boyd Tavern and attended the Boyd Reunion when they were able to travel the long distance. They both had a great interest in genealogy.

Mrs. Sally Boyd Reveley Hudgins has donated a copy of her Boyd genealogy to the Boyd Tavern. Sally's father, William Nowlin Reveley began collecting this information and Sally continued the

work after her children were older, giving her more time to do so. Sally is descended from Richard Boyd, Alexander, the Eider's

third son, Richard, b. 1771, married Panthea Burwell and had eleven children. Her father's line comes through the oldest child, Christian Blair Boyd, who married John Garland. Her mother's Daniel line is through the tenth child, William Henry Boyd, b. 1819, who married Sarah Virginia Daniel. Sally's Hudgins's mother's line also comes through Panthea Elizabeth Boyd, b. 1821, who married Capt. John S. R. Burwell.

Sally's informative book shows the genealogy of the Garlands, Norvells, Blairs, Bullocks, Daniels, and the Burwells.

This book is kept in the Tavern and is available to make copies of these family connections if you wish to do so.

We appreciate the gift of this book and we also appreciate the hard work that made this information available to us.

Many thanks, Sally Boyd Reveley Hudgins, for this wonderful gift for posterity.

TRIBUTE TO EDWINA GODDARD

Edwina's Father and Mother, William Henry Boyd Taylor and Gladys Nolan. Edwina is in her Father's arms. This picture was taken at "Fox Level" in Soudan, VA

Every year when reunion time comes around, Edwina Taylor " Goddard is on our minds when we begin work on our annual Boyd Family Newsletter. We mention her name, and briefly, write a few words to thank her and call attention to the work she has done in the genealogical field for the Boyd Family. The gratitude we have shown her through the years is very small in comparison to the amount of work she has done, the amount of time she has spent and the contribution she has made to the Boyd Family.

This year we want to recognize Edwina as our first genealogist who is descended from Alexander Boyd, the Elder and Ann Swepson Boyd.

Edwina's father, William Henry Boyd Taylor was the son of Marion Taylor who married Alice Goodridge Boyd . Alice Goodridge Boyd Taylor's father was William Henry Boyd, b. 1819, who married Sarah Virginia Daniel. William Henry Boyd's father was Richard Blair Boyd, b. 1771, who married Panthea Burwell, (daughter of Col. Lewis Burwell and Ann Spotswood). Richard Blair Boyd was Alexander, the Eider's third son.

"Edwina Taylor Goddard born in 1922, was the only child of William Henry Boyd Taylor and Gladys Nolan Taylor. Her parents met while Boyd (as he was known) was stationed in San Diego in the Navy. After they were married they moved to his home, "Fox Level" in Soudan, Virginia. Boyd died suddenly when Edwina was only two years old and she and her mother moved back to the Nolan family home in San Diego, where she grew up. In 1930 they moved to Point Loma, across the bay from the

growing city of San Diego. "Eddie" was pretty much a tomboy. She enjoyed rowing her boat on San Diego Bay, and has always been fascinated with the military.

Edwina on San Diego Bay, with her dog, Pepsy

She met her husband, Winfred R. Goddard, Jr., while he was stationed in San Diego during WWII. They married in 1945 and had four children-she likes to boast of perfect planning: two boys and two girls in order of boy-girl-boy-girl, each two years apart.

As a child being so distant from her paternal side of the family in California, she kept up a correspondence with her aunts and uncles in Virginia and North Carolina. That led to an interest in her lineage and a lifetime searching out those hidden connections. Heraldry and genealogy became passions of hers. In the process of those studies, she naturally became an expert on the Boyd family.

When Win retired, many a motor home trip (back in the days when motor homes were refatively new) was planned around the pursuit of missing links she needed to fill in the gaps in her genealogical research. Many, many distant cousins would find Win and Edwina parked out front of their hpmes one day, seeking directions to the local cemetery or county records. Then she would pull out her wire brush and clean up those headstones and markers she found, all the while noting the history recorded upon them. They also traveled across the pond in pursuit of information on family lines in Scotland, England, and Ireland.

Edwina & Win attended as many of the Boyd Family Reunions as they could, Taking advantage of the cross-country expedition to include additional research side trips wherever possible. She delighted in being able to help others find their own connections, and contributed heavily to the Boyd Family records. Also, as every family tree splits each generation, she also became very knowledgeable for each of her family lines. Consequently, she was able to join many organizations such as the DAR, Colonial Dames, Mayflower descendants, etc. and helped many others to do so , too. In the meantime, her husband got the genealogy bug, became a charter member of the Goddard Association and ended up writing a book on his Goddard family line.

Edwina is very proud of her Boyd ancestors and their Scottish connections."

Edwina is also very proud of her children and their families. Boyd Taylor Goddard b. 1946-2 children Patricia Ethel Goddard Moore b. 1948-3 children Alan Edward Goddard b. 1950 Ellen Wynne Goddard Ewing b. 1952-3 children

We thank Edwina's children for this information especially, her son, Capt. Boyd Taylor Goddard.

We thank you, Edwina, for everything you have done to keep the heritage of the ~9:Y4 alive.

Edwina Taylor Goddard (Mrs. Winfred R. Goddard)

SALUTE IN APPRECIATION FOR EDWINA GODDARD

Edwina has inspired and informed the descendants of Alexander Boyd, the Elder and his wife Ann Swepson Boyd with records of many generations of Boyd Family Data. She started the never-ending project in the early 1950's and has continued through the present time. She has researched, proven, collected and recorded information including birth dates, marriage dates and death dates of Alexander and Ann Swepson Boyd's eleven children through the generations. Edwina has researched our Scottish heritage and provided us information on the Alexander Boyd ancestry in Scotland 'before his coming to America.

All of this information is available at the Boyd Tavern in Boydton, Virginia. It is a lasting gift from Edwina for posterity. We cannot thank her enough.

I know Edwina to be a very interesting, lovable, and wellinformed person and fun to be with. I feel fortunate to be her

We wish she lived closer to Virginia and the Boyd Tavern so we could all enjoy her company.

Some Interesting Genealogy BURWELLS and SPOTSWOODS

In last year's newsletter, you read about the Burwell family history as far back as 425 A.D. in France. This is how the Burwell family is connected to Gov. Alexander Spotswood's family.

Two of Alexander Boyd, the Eider's sons married Burwells; his third son, Richard married Panthea Burwell and his fourth son, Alexander, the Younger, married Matilda Burwell.

Panthea and Matilda were daughters of Col. Lewis Burwell and his wife, Ann Spotswood Burwell who lived at Ravenscroft located near what is now Chase City, VA.

Ann Spotswood was the daughter of Col. John D. Spotswood and Mary Dandridge Spotswood .. Col. John D. Spotswood was the son of Gov. Alexander Spotswood.

This would make all of Richard Boyd's and Alexander Boyd, the Younger's descendants related to the Spotswoods. There are other members of the Boyd family who married Spotswood kin who do not carry the Spotswood name.

The spelling of the name Spotswood has changed in past generations. Some used Spottswood, some used Spotswood, and some used Spottswould.

Not only is the Spotswood family connected to the Boyd family but the Boyd family is also connected to the Dandridge family through Col. John D. Spotswood's wife Mary Dandridge Spotswood. Mary Dandridge was sister to Martha Dandridge, who married George Washington. George and Martha Washington had no direct descendants but the Spotswood Family connects the Dandridge Family to the Boyd Family.

OBITUARIES

As we are beginning to write the annual Boyd Family Newsletter, the sad news arrives that one of our family, Frank Rader, who has done an enormous amount of work on our Boyd Family genealogy, has died.

Frank greatly expanded the Boyd Lines. He computerized the Boyd genealogy so that each of us can purchase a CD with our own family connection to Alexander Boyd, the Elder or a CD containing the entire Boyd Family. This is a continuing contribution and we are forever grateful.

Frank and Liz Rader

We are deeply grieved and saddened by his sudden passing. We will cherish and appreciate his contributions through the generations to come.
