Supercomputer Watson from IBM is already giving medical advice for cancer treatment. On average his human counterparts are familiar with approximately 8 to 10 different cancer treatments. But today there are approximately 70 others practiced with another 200 in the research, clinical trial stages or just published in a scientific journal. For cancer patients this could make a significant difference in the battle between life and death. IBM Watson can deal with all this. A doctor possibly can’t.

Work used to be considered a place

Today people come together from all around the world, using amazing web programmes to communicate

Project teams are beginning to resemble movie production teams

Job Hopping is the new “Normal”

In the past, careers were stable, linear and singular. People chose one path and pursued it over the course of their entire lives, from education to retirement

Post-industrial society

The economy undergoes a transition from the production of goods to the provision of services.

Knowledge becomes a valued form of capital, see human capital.

Producing ideas is the main way to grow the economy.

Globalization & automation leads to a decline in the prevalence and value of blue-collar & manual labour and a rise in the prevalence and value of professional workers (e.g. scientists, creative-industry professionals, and IT professionals)

Many jobs that existed in the past have vanished… or nearly vanished.

Labour markets change…

Assembly jobs – done in china

Typists – we do our own

Telephonists – automated out….

… and so on.

But, they are mainly jobs done by people with low levels of qualifications.

Graduates will need qualifications / skills to compete in the labour market.

Declining Occupations

The pace of change today remains fast.

The fastest growing occupations are those that need Level 4 and Level 3 qualifications.
