* He distrusted scholar-officials because they didn't respect soldiers.

* He revived Confucian values and the merit system for choosing officials.

* Yongle was Hongwu's son and he ruled with absolute power.

* He moved the capital from the southern city of Nanjing to Beijing in the north to return power to the North.

* He rebuilt the Great Wall to prevent Mongol invasions.

* He built his capital city in the heart of Beijing. It became known as the Forbidden City.

* The Ming Dynasty's foreign policy was based on the tributary system.

* Some tributary states in this system were Korea, Vietnam and Japan.

* Every few years, these countries had to send diplomats to bring gifts to Beijing to show respect.

* Diplomats had to show respect to Ming rulers by performing the kowtow.

*  The main benefit of tribute for the Ming Dynasty was peaceful borders.

* It allowed Ming rulers to spend less on armies and more on public works projects.
