When a person gets to a certain age, his body and mind startto perform differently and may diminish in function. Aspeople age and reach the senior stage of life, they stop beingable to do certain tasks and have difficulty with a lot ofdifferent things. This is due to the changes that happen in ourbodies as we age.

As the people who care for and love our elderly parents andrelatives, we must understand that this is a sensitive stage intheir lives and we must be prepared to know in what areasthey may need help with and how we may help them.

When one gets to old age, their body becomesweaker and they find themselves unable to docertain tasks like before. Some elderly may havedifficulty getting up from a chair, some may havedifficulty going up and down stairs, and others mayhave difficulty walking altogether. It is important tobe aware of where they are at in terms of physicalcapabilities so you may make changes in your/theirhome to accommodate them.

Installing hand-rails, stair-climbers, and bathroomhandles in the home are abig help in improving theirlives. If needed, a wheelchairor walker would also be ofgreat help.

While still on the topic ofphysical tasks and mobility,activities of daily living aresimple, everyday tasks thatwe are all required to do forour general well-being. Thisincludes eating, bathing,going to the toilet, dressing,and personal hygiene.

• Some elderly may find these tasks too difficultto perform alone and may require someone tohelp them. If you have time on your hands todo this, then it is imperative that you providehelp in these tasks. If you don’t have enoughtime to help out with these, this is wherehome care solutions come in. A senior homecare specialist, or caregiver, can help yourelderly relatives to perform these tasks withease and comfort.

Health is a general term thatincludes monitoring the vitalsigns, ensuring that onetakes medicine on time andgoes to their doctorregularly. If you don’t livewith your elderly relative andthey are still relativelyhealthy, visiting at least onceor twice a week to check upon them is fine.

However, if they are sick or are dealing with achronic illness, perhaps it is best to have a nurse or ahome care solutions helper to ensure that they keepup with their medicines.

Getting old also means gettingbored and lonely. Especially withtoday’s fast-paced lifestyle andtechnology-driven lives, webarely pay attention to peopleunless they’re talking to usonline.

Perhaps a good way to take a break from yourstressful and busy life is to take a break fromeverything and everyone and simply enjoy agood old fashion day of catching up andhaving a conversation with your elderly lovedones. This will help keep them from gettingbored and depressed as well. Invite them toplay a game with you or take them out to themall or the park so they get to interact sociallyas well as go out like they used to.
