The annual summer Nebuta Festival was held in Yotsukura on Saturday, July 26. Before the

nebuta (paper-covered figures pulled around on floats) filled the streets of Yotsukura, the

Yotsukura leg of Iwaki Odori was performed. Iwaki Odori is a dance held in different areas of

the city, with participating teams dressing up to represent their respective associations. There

was also a Yosakoi performance early in the evening.

After the dancing, it was time for the main attraction of the evening – the nebuta. Lights are

placed inside the paper floats, making their bright colours glow in the summer night. At this

year’s parade there were a total of seven floats: four of them taking on a three-dimensional

shape and the remaining three were made of flat surfaces with images painted on them. The

Nebuta Festival in Yotsukura is based on the famous Aomori Nebuta Festival.

Yappe Odori was held in Yumoto on Monday, August 4. The word Yappe is Iwaki dialect for

Yarou or Yarimashou, meaning “Let’s do it!” – a call to action.

According to the legend behind the dance, there once was a lumber wholesaler name Yahei

from Edo who would frequent the Tohoku region on business. After an unexpected stumbling

in business, Yahei experienced a severe slump and eventually fell into bankruptcy. While

thinking of a way to revive his store, he remembered the Sahako Shrine in Yumoto that he

would sometimes visit. He visited the shrine once more and asked for the blessing of the gods.

The gods revealed to him that his store could be revived through his own hard work and

perseverance. They also told him that if he were to seek to not only profit, but to serve the

world through his trade, his business would forever thrive. Yahei was elated at the sudden

realisation that he had the power to improve his circumstances on his own. He danced about

wildly with excitement in front of the alter. He later went on to achieve great success through

his own tireless efforts, building up his business into something much greater than it ever was.

From Yahei’s odori (dance) at the shrine we get Yappe Odori. The lively atmosphere, fast

tempo and shouting of “Yappe” all reflect the message of the story – that we can all overcome

difficulties through persistence and by taking action ourselves.

August 10th

: Alios Park Festival @ Taira Central Park (in front of Alios), Taira. From 11am to 4pm. Alios Park Festival is held on the

second Sunday of every month from April to November. There will be stalls selling food and drinks, works of art, and handicrafts.

Every month there is a live stage with performances including local DJs and dance performances. The event will be cancelled in rainy

August 11th

: First Seashore Summer Festival @ Hisanohama-machi. From 6pm to 8:30pm. There will be Bon Odori, fireworks,

stalls set up on the street, and various other events. Please travel by JR as there is no parking on site. Be aware that the festival will

August 13th

to 15th

: Kaiten Yagara Bon Odori Festival @ Uchigo (in front of the station). Wednesday: from 1pm to 9pm. Thursday

and Friday: from 5:30pm to 9pm. This year is the 60th

anniversary of the Kaiten Yagura (rotating tower) used in the Bon odori

celebrations in Uchigo. Participants dance around the central rotating tower, and anyone is welcome to join in. For inquiries, please

August 16th

: La La Mew Bon Odori @ west side plaza, La La Mew, Onahama. From 4pm to 8:30pm.There will be yosakoi dancing

as a memorial for the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and an expression of the desire for recovery in the region. There

: Hanawa Lantern Floating and Fireworks Festival @ Kawakamigawa River, Hanawa, Higashishirakawa-gun. This

year marks the 85th

anniversary of this festival, celebrated at the end of Obon. There will be lanterns floated down the river, a

: Sukagawa Shakado River Fireworks Festival @ Around the riverbed in front of Sukagawa Station, Sukagawa City.

Counselling Centre for Women: Counsellors can assist you in Japanese, Chinese, English, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai and Tagalog. Available languages differ each day. TEL: 050-1501-2803. Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm.

OC NET: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 7pm – 9pm. TEL: 03-3730-0556. English, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean, Spanish, and Thai. TELL Lifeline: TELL is a professional non-profit organisation that provides counselling to English-speaking foreigners all over Japan. The Lifeline is staffed by highly trained volunteer

phone counsellors and provides free non-judgemental phone counselling and information 365 days a year from 9am to 4pm and 7pm to 11pm. TEL: 03-5774-0992. Emergency Dental Care

All emergency dental care will be provided at the General Health and Welfare Centre (Sogo Hoken Fukushi Senta) in Uchigo. This centre is open on Sundays and all National holidays from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. The reception closes at 3:30pm. For more information please contact the centre on 27-8620.

The sixth annual Iwaki Sunshine Marathon will be held on Sunday 8 February 2015. Details for applications for

participants and volunteers are as follows:

from the Iwaki Sunshine Marathon Executive Committee Office (5th Floor of Iwaki City Hall), Citizens’ Lobby (1st Floor of

Iwaki City Hall), Iwaki City Branch Offices and the Citizen Service Centre from early September. The money transfer forms can be submitted over the counter at your local post office.

Application period: From September 1 (Mon) to October 17 (Fri). However, applications via money transfer close on October 3 (Fri).

Application for Volunteers Application requirements: Applicants must be 15 years or older and must be free to attend the information session

planned for December of this year. Number of positions: 2,000 (to be filled on a first-come-first-served basis)

Type of work: Organising the course (guiding and making space for runners, pedestrians, traffic etc.), working at the

water stations, handing out participation awards etc. How to apply: Fill out an application form and send it to the Iwaki Sunshine Marathon Executive Committee Office via

mail, fax or email (see below for details). Application forms can be obtained from Iwaki Sunshine Marathon Executive Committee Office, Iwaki City Branch Offices, the Citizen Service Centre and the Iwaki Sunshine Marathon website from

early August. You can also obtain an application form from the Iwaki City website. Application period: Until October 31 (Fri)

There is an increasing interest in teaching English at the primary school level. We would like to see further improvements in English instruction both at school and at home. We will be holding a workshop for training people capable of teaching English to Iwaki’s primary school children. There will also be a good opportunity for networking after the lecture. The world of colouring books is not something just for children. Why not relive your childhood and colour in a colouring book once again? At this event you will be able to experience colouring in colouring books using natural mineral pigments like those used in Japanese-style painting. The distinct hues of the pigments will surely speak gently to your heart.

There are many festivals across Iwaki (and of course the rest of Japan) during the month of August. Have a look at what’s on happening in Iwaki on page 2. There is bound to be something on offer this month that interests you. It’s an exciting time of the year, so try and get out there and see as much as possible!

Also, although it may feel like a long time until February 8 of next year, preparations for the Iwaki Sunshine Marathon are already underway. As stated on page 5, applications for runners open next month. If you are not much of a runner, please consider giving it a go. If you do decide that you are interested in starting running (or running
