    Letter from the editor

Over the course of its history, the presidents and their families found all sorts

of ways to use and enjoy the White House garden. James Madison and Michelle

Obama grew food. Ike played golf. JFK, not Jackie, planned and oversaw the

installation of the rose garden. And no doubt many of them found it a peaceful

respite at the end of a long day. All the Presidents’ Gardens  reveals the stories

behind the development of the most famous garden in the United States and

how it has served as a backdrop to history.

Our readers are no different from the presidents, using their gardens and the

natural world around them in a multitude of ways. Timber Press has books that

will help them grow their garden, further their appreciation of nature, and teach

them how to be better stewards of the earth.

In Beaks, Bones, and Bird Songs  readers will gain a greater understanding of

the miraculous feats that birds perform every day in their efforts to survive.

For those who garden indoors, Sunken Gardens  shows how to create magical

underwater gardens that are tiny self-contained ecosystems. Though most

people experience a garden with their eyes, engaging their sense of smell can

bring a garden more fully to life. The Aromatherapy Garden  tells the best plants

to grow for fragrance and how to use them both in the garden and in the home.

And since everyone would like a comfortable place to sit, Hand-Built Outdoor

Furniture  offers instructions for building stools, benches, and chairs to sink

into while kicking back to enjoy the garden.

These are just a few of the highlights from this season’s new titles. Our catalog

offers many more opportunities to help readers garden like a president.

GARDENSMadison’s Cabbages to Kennedy’sRoses –How the White House GroundsHave Grown with AmericaMARTA McDOWELL

The eighteen acres that surround the White House have been

BIRD SONGSHow the Struggle for Survival hasShaped Birds and Their BehaviorROGER LEDERER

When we see birds flying rom branch to branch happily

chirping, it is easy to imagine they lead simple lives o reedom,

flight, and eathers. What we don’t see is the arduous, lie-

threatening challenges they ace at every moment.

In Beaks, Bones, and Bird Songs, ornithologist Roger Lederer

guides the reader through the myriad, and ofen almost

miraculous, things that birds do every day to merely stay

    alive. Like the goldfinch, who

    manages extreme weather changes

by doubling the density o its

    plumage in winter. Or urban

    birds who navigate traffic through

    a keen understanding o posted

    speed limits. In engaging and

accessible prose, Lederer shares how and why birds use theirsensory abilities to see ultraviolet light, find ood without

seeing it, fly thousands o miles without stopping, change their

songs in noisy cities, navigate by smell, and much more.

Lederer has studied bird behavior or more than thirty years.

In Beaks, Bones, and Bird Songs  he shares this knowledge in

an entertaining and eye-opening way that will be widely

    EVOLVING

LANDSCAPESCreate Native Gardens that Unfold Over TimeLARRY WEANER & THOMAS CHRISTOPHER

Larry Weaner is an icon in the world o ecological landscape

design—he has designed more than two hundred meadows

and woodland gardens in his thirty years in the business and

is the ounder o the annual conerence New Directions in the

American Landscape. And now his revolutionary approach is

    available to all gardeners.

Evolving Landscapes shows how an ecological approach toplanting can lead to beautiul gardens that buck many o

    conventional gardening’s counter-productive, time-consuming

    practices. Instead o picking the

     wrong plant and then constantly

    tilling, weeding, irrigating, and

    ertilizing, Weaner advocates or

choosing plants that are adapted to

the soil and climate o a specific site,

and letting them naturally evolve over

time. Allowing the plants to find their own niches, to spread

their seed around until they find the microclimate and spot thatsuits them best, creates a landscape that is vibrant, dynamic, and

    gorgeous year afer year.

This lushly-photographed reerence is an important moment

in horticulture that will be embraced by anyone looking or a

A BOTANIST’SVOCABULARY1300 Terms Explained and IllustratedSUSAN K. PELL & BOBBI ANGELL
