wrESTLErS, PigEOn FAnCiErS, And KiTE FLyErSTraditional Sports and Pastimes in LahoreJrgen wasim Frembgen and Paul rollier

Wrestling, racing pigeons, and kite flying are emblematic of the Walled City of Lahore. They show the wealth and diversity of Pakistani folk cultures in an exemplary way. Most importantly, they are an expression of happiness and joy. In short, they represent a cultural system and preserve cultural values. This is the first book dealing in detail with these traditional sports and pastimes. The authors argue that these seemingly trivial pleasures form an integral part of social life in Pakistan and create important bonds between various communities.

Dr Jrgen Wasim Frembgen is Professor for History of the Religion and Culture of Islam at the Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Munich, Germany.

Paul Rollier is currently a post-doctoral research associate in Social Anthropology at the University College London, UK.

BALuCHiSTAn: THE LAnd OF ArCHiTECTurE, CrAFTS And rELigiOuS SymBOLiSmmohsen Keiany

This research work explores the living tradition of Baluchistan and provides a deeper understanding of its religo-cultural aspects. The architectural and artistic traditions are well-documented in this book. The material presented on prayer rugs, tents, and aspects of the nomadic and semi-nomadic architecture is wholly original. The research first focuses on the social environment of Baluchistan, in order to understand the input of local culture and tribo-religious influences of local architecture. The Baluchi lifestyle is analysed on a broad plane, taking into account native architecture including mosques and symbolic minarets as key factors, together with their design, characteristics, social contextualisation and methods of production.

Mohsen Keiany currently works as a full-time lecturer in the University of Arts in Isfahan and also at Azad University of Shiraz, Iran.

LAHOrETopophilia of Space and PlaceAnna Suvorova

This book is a reconstruction of the historical and cultural images of Lahore. The author has chosen an interdisciplinary approach that combines studies in cultural anthropology, literary and historical sources, art history, and humanistic geography. The central point of the analysis is topophilia, the term used to describe the strong sense of place or identity among certain peoples and groups. The authors aim is to show how the historical and cultural developments of people build up the cultural landscape of the city and how the geographical place and space, in their turn, influence the behaviour and identity of Lahores citizens.

Dr Anna Suvorova is currently Head of the Department of Asian Literatures at the Institute of Oriental Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia.

rEmOTELy COLOniALHistory and Politics in Balochistannina Swidler

This book examines tribalism and nationalism as historical processes in Kalat, a native state under the British that is today incorporated in Balochistan Province, Pakistan. Since the early nineteenth century, Balochistan has been both remote and strategically important to world powers. Kalat was an atypical native state in that the ruler was marginalized in favour of sardars (chiefs) and tribal governance through jirga (tribal court) deliberations. Although Kalat State ceased to exist in 1955, its colonial structures persist today, albeit in weakened form.

Nina Swidler is Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Anthropology, Fordham University, New York, USA.

PASHTun migrAnTS in THE nOrTHErn ArEAS OF PAKiSTAnmatthias weinreich

Drawing primarily on oral sources from the authors own research, this book outlines the settlement history of Pashto speakers in Pakistans Northern Areas over the last 150 years, concentrating on the decades following the opening of the Karakoram Highway in 1978. It also looks at how the migrants language situation had developed by the mid 1990s. The book also aims to define how the trends related to Pashtun migration to the Northern Areas in the mid 1990s could develop in the near future. Interwoven with this analysis are childhood memories and life stories recounted by the Pashto speaking migrants interviewed by the author, thus giving the reader a fascinating insight into their lives.

Matthias Weinreich is presently working for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and has served in Afghanistan, Armenia, Pakistan, Sudan, Macedonia/Albania, and Tanzania.

ArTEFACTS OF dEvOTiOnA Sufi Repertoire of the Qalandariyya in Sehwan Sharif, Sindh, Pakistanmichel Boivin

This book is an introduction to the words and things which are produced by the Sufi brotherhood known as Qalandariyya. It gives evidence that the material cultural goods produced in the scope of such tradition express a meaningful representation of the world in a regional context. For unveiling such a Weltanschauung, it seems relevant, first, to constitute a repertoire that is a first classification of the items, with their local identities and definitions, and the place they occupy inside the discourse of the Qalandariyya. While focussing on the Qalandariyya, the book echoes main issues regarding Islam, Sufism, and society in South Asia.

Michel Boivin is a research fellow at the Centre for Indian and South Asian Studies (CEIAS), National Centre for Scientific Research, France.

THE unCOnQuErEd PEOPLE The Liberation of an Oppressed CasteJohn OBrien

This book explores the history and ethnography of the Chandala of classical literature, now known as Punjabi Christians. Mapping their history of conquest and religiously-endorsed degradation, it discusses their subversive counter-narrative through genealogies, wedding songs, litanies, and epic poetry; with its defiant proclamation of identity. Eclecticism in their religious sensibilities indicates how superficial adherence to the externals of major religions was a survival tactic. Their hidden religion and exclusion from Hindu dharm, shows why they never saw themselves as Hindus.

John OBrien has lectured widely in Religious Studies and conducted workshops in many countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

AT THE SHrinE OF THE rEd SuFi Five days and nights on Pilgrimage in PakistanJrgen wasim Frembgen

Translated from german by Jane ripken

In his vividly written narrative, the renowned anthropologist and Islamologist, Jrgen Wasim Frembgen, takes the reader along with him to experience this unique ritual event and spectacle with all the senses. The annual festival celebrated in honour of Pakistans most popular Sufi saint, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, is full of spiritual rapture, ecstasy, trance, magic, and devotion. Stefan Weidner, a renowned writer and expert on Islam, has judged this book (German language version) as one of the most exciting reports we owe to German cultural anthropology in recent decades.

Dr Jrgen Wasim Frembgen is Professor for History of the Religion and Culture of Islam at the Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Munich, Germany.

    2011, 188 pages, Hardback, isbn: 978-0-19-906307-9, 216x138mm, rs 695

THE wAy OF THE PATHAnSJames w. Spain

Drawing on a decade of experience and scholarly research, James Spain has produced a work on the Pathans which is entertaining, readable, and valuable for reference. The principal tribes and their characteristics, their austere and beautiful land, and their turbulent history and daily lives are presented concisely and systematically; as are the fiery sweetness of Pathan poetry, the murky violence of tribal feuds over zar, zan, and zamin (gold, women, and land), and the perennial intrigue among tribes. James Spain writes of the century-long war between Briton and Pathan with admiration and sympathy for both sides.

James W. Spain was in the US Foreign Service and served as ambassador in Tanzania, Turkey, the United Nations, and Sri Lanka.

PATHAnS OF THE LATTEr dAy James w. Spain

Pathans of the Latter Day is a sequel to the authors The Way of the Pathans, written more than forty years ago and frequently cited in literature on Pakistans north-west frontier since. It is a self-contained volume based on the authors return visits to the Frontier in the 1980s and 1990s. A combination of history, personal experience, and interpretation, Pathans of the Latter Day details the origins and structure of the volatile tribesmen living along Pakistans border with Afghanistan; their highly developed code of law, Pukhtunwali; their acceptance of Pakistan; their relations with their Chinese neighbours; and their experiences during the wars in Afghanistan.

COmPAring CiTiESThe middle East and South AsiaEdited by Kamran Asdar Ali and martina rieker

The book contains a set of essays which seeks to highlight the changing social dynamics in Middle Eastern and South Asian cities. The papers rethink the gendered dimension of public spaces and investigate the relationship between the popular and the political in these regions. They also take into account how larger structural changes in South Asia and the Middle East have impacted the practices and experiences of people.

Kamran Asdar Ali is Associate Professor of Anthropology, Middle East Studies and Asian Studies at the University of Texas, Austin, USA.

Martina Rieker is Director of the Institute for Gender and Womens Studies at the American University in Cairo.

inTErPrETing THE SindHi wOrLd Essays on Society and HistoryEdited by michel Boivin and matthew A. Cook

This book seeks to unite the wide community of scholars who work on Sindh and with Sindhis. It includes work on all geographic regions in which Sindhis live (i.e., Pakistan, India, and the diaspora) to describe the diversity of Sindhs voices. By re-threading unheard socio-cultural and historical voices into understanding Sindh and its people, this collection disputes the vision of Sindhis as a monolithic Muslim population in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

A PunJABi viLLAgE in PAKiSTAnPerspectives on Community, Land, and EconomyZekiye Eglar

The two books in this volume: the award-winning A Punjabi Village in Pakistan and The Economic Life of a Punjabi Village are based on extensive fieldwork and present a detailed account of the social and economic patterns of a village in Pakistan prior to the Green Revolution of 1958, which heralded the beginnings of change in agriculture and land ownership. The author found that unwritten social contracts and relationships known as vartan bhanji bound the community at many different levels, socially, economically, and in dispute resolution and that, although vartan bhanji was vital within the male sphere, it was the women who were central to the process and thus to the economic as well as the social well-being of the community.

    Series Editor: Ali Khan

By addressing the diversity and complexity of the Islamic tradition in contemporary Pakistan and seeking to analyse this diversity from very different theoretical angles, the chapters in this book emphasise the multi-dimensionality of the varying ways in which Islam is an integral part of the everyday life of Pakistani Muslims. The authors explore the vitality of Islam as a religious tradition in Pakistan both from the perspective of in-depth ethnographic fieldwork and historical research.

This inter-regional history of South Asian and Indian Ocean migration in the modern period from 1775 to 2006 follows Pashtun individuals and communities as they left homelands and responded to colonial and post-colonial opportunities and challenges in eighteenth century Rohilkhand; nineteenth century northern India and Hyderabad; Pakistan after 1947; and the modern, globalizing Gulf region. This work illuminates the history of Pashtuns and offers an insight into how Asian regional populations have been integrated into, and often subordinated by, the dynamics of contemporary globalization.

THE TigErS OF BALuCHiSTAnSylvia A. matheson

The author has travelled extensively in remote parts of Pakistans tribal territory, sharing a tough primitive way of life, unchanged for centuries, and recording it on tape, cine, and still films. She lived for five years among the Bugtis, traditionally known as Tigers of Baluchistan, who are one of the most distinguished Baluch tribes of Pakistan. The result is a fascinating and very vivid eyewitness account of how the Bugtis are dealing with their sudden confrontation with twentieth century industrialization, following the discovery and development of Asias largest natural gas field inside their area.

Afghanistan looks at this age-old land and country as it was before the Soviet invasion. It contains two epilogues: one written in 1978, and the other in 1980 right before the Soviet invasion. Afghanistan traces the development of this country from a tribal and politically unstable nation to one with a system of representative government consistent with its cultural and historical patterns. Along with the narrative, the author presents all this material to us through charts, maps, and illustrations. It also contains appendices on music and calendars used in Afghanistan.

With a population of more than 150 million, Muslims are the largest Indian minority. But over the last twenty-five years, they have faced a significant decline in both socio-economic and political termswhile afflicted by periodic waves of communal violence. In Indias cities, these developments find contrasting forms of expression. While Muslims lag behind, local syncretic cultures have proved to be resilient in the South and in the East. In the Hindi belt and in the North, Muslims have met a different fate, especially in riot-prone areas (Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Jaipur, and Aligarh) and in the former capitals of Muslim states (Delhi, Hyderabad, Bhopal, and Lucknow). This book supplements an ethnographic approach to Muslims in eleven Indian cities with a quantitative methodology in order to give an account of this untold story.

    introduction by william dalrymple

This book is an interdisciplinary study that bridges across medicine, horticulture, and poetry in Islamic India. It seeks to find relations between cultural values and landscape expression. It does so through reference to the significance of fragrance in Islam, as understood in medicinal and horticultural texts, and through essential focus on Hyderabad, one of the last bastions of Islamic culture in the Indian subcontinent. The nature-culture question is examined in garden poetry, a genre associated with the Arabo-Persian and Urdu literary traditions and, at Hyderabad, with the Deccani Urdu tradition.

This book is an unconventional attempt to bring together diverse aspects of the Badshahi Mosque in a single narrativeaspects that are historical, political, and artistic at the same time. Even though many general studies have been done over the years, few have taken a critical approach towards the history of this monument. This was a study that began as a humble enquiry into the nature of the interiors and embellishments of the mosque. With time, it expanded into a much broader work which attempts to bridge the many gaps that existed in the history of this Mughal monument.

Culminating in the justly famed tomb of Rukn-al-Din Rukn-i-Alam in Multan, this distinctive and localized tradition partakes of deeply-rooted craft traditions, even as it reflects vernacular forms of spirituality which continue today. What distinguishes this study from others is its formathistorical chapters are supplemented with a catalogue of individual monuments, thus providing the reader with multiple ways to engage with an important building tradition.

imAgES in my mirrOrAutobiography of a Sindhi Poet: A Translation of Ainay kay SamnayAttiya dawood

Translated from urdu by Amina Azfar

Attiya Dawoods autobiography is a lucid testament of her struggle to find her own identity in a patriarchal society that has little tolerance for those who seek to escape from male domination and meet with men on their own terms. Her experience as a child, orphaned at a very early age and living in the close confines of village life in the interior of Sindh, and her struggles to be independent in Hyderabad and in the metropolis of Karachi provide her with a different worldview to those unaffected by the claustrophobic and hide-bound atmosphere of village life.

Attiya Dawood, through her writings, has highlighted the oppression of women in the name of tradition in Pakistani society. She is a recipient of the Sindh Adeeb Award awarded by Akhil Bharat Sindhi Boli Ain Sahit Sabha, India.

FOOTPrinTS in TimE reminiscences of a Sindhi matriarchghulam Fatima Shaikh

Translated from Sindhi by rasheeda Husain

This memoir provides a first-hand account of what conversion from Hinduism to Islam meant in practice; and its impact on Sindhi society from the late nineteenth century onwards. It contains intriguing information about what it was like to be a family that spanned the HinduMuslim divide, and how individual members coped with the challenges and pressures generated by conversion. Sindhi Muslims were caught up in the Khilafat agitation of the period and its immediate aftermath. Through this memoir, we gain a clearer sense of what the Ottoman Empire meant to Muslims of the subcontinent and how far some of them were prepared to go to support its existence.

Ghulam Fatima Shaikh was a firm believer in the education of women. In 1947, she founded the Fatima Girls Middle School in Hyderabad, Sindh, which she managed right until her death in 1981.

Rasheeda Husain has had a varied career as a teacher, newsreader, music programme conductor on radio, research librarian, and publicity manager.

Rich in literary, historical, and cultural allusions, the book is written in a punchy, witty style that keeps the reader engaged from the beginning to end.

This second, revised edition of the book is an updated version, covering the most recent writings on the subject, especially in India, and provides a detailed and systematic analysis of the charismatic leadership of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of Indian Muslims during the crisis-ridden decade of 193747. Although Jinnah has been studied as a charismatic leader before, no previous study has defined and discussed the concept of charisma so methodically or employed it to analyze his leadership in such a systematic, organized manner. In this sense, the book is unique and distinct and makes an original contribution to the scholarly literature on Jinnahs political leadership.
