Principals Newsletter Week 2 Term 2, May 2nd 2012 Our thoughts and best wishes are with Daniela Hollis and Zac for the sudden loss of mother and Grandmother.

Welcome back everyone! I would like to thank all our parents and carers for giving all their children such a wonderful holiday

break. The children have returned to school ready for hard work, full of enthusiasm and very settled, school uniforms look great as well. Thank you everyone.

This term’s calendar is filling up very fast and already it promises to be an extremely busy 10 weeks for all. The many planned activities have already begun, including the Cross Country, both school, which was run last Thursday and the Zone on Friday, the National Assessment Plan, a testing schedule for Y3 and Y5, to be held in week 4 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Star Struck in June (two rehearsals are already planned for tomorrow (Thurs) and Thursday 24th of May. Please make sure that you read our newsletters each fortnight to keep up to date. A Term 2 Calendar was included with last week’s newsletter and is posted on our web site.

Thank you so much to the many people who looked after our school grounds during the holidays, particularly the Cooper’s, Monique and Grant worked hard in our gardens mulching and hedging and saving our garden furniture from the skateboarders. Thank you to Mrs. Ireland, Mrs. Sheehan, Ms. Trisha Barker and Mrs. Ireland’s parents for their work in replanting our indigenous garden, the totems also look great.

Fridays vegetable stall: A very successful stall was held on the last day of term one when freshly

picked vegetables and herbs from the school garden were sold. I can vouch for the beans, they were delicious! We are aiming to continue this practice each Friday while vegetables are available. Hopefully the stall will be available prior to morning assembly for parents to purchase. Any money raised from this activity is used to replenish our garden with seedlings and to assist with the Y6 fundraiser.

Staff leave: I will be on leave from Monday next week for 5 weeks as I will be taking my grandson to

Alice Springs to join his mum as they have relocated there for work. I will be on grandma duties while his family settles into their new jobs and school. Mrs. Crain will step into the relieving principal’s position and as always will be strongly supported by Mr. Selwood, Mr. Junon, Mr. Horadam and all staff. I know that she will do a wonderful job in my absence. Mrs. Carlier is currently on sick leave and is being replaced by Mrs. Kay Dunford. We all wish her a very speedy recovery.

Chicken Pox: There has been one confirmed case of Chicken Pox in our school, please check children

for any spots and follow up with medical assistance if necessary.

Anzac Day Assembly: Our special Assembly to commemorate Anzac Day was held last Friday. Seven

special guests “Veterans in Schools” from our local RSL club and The National Service and Combined Forces Association of Australia attended and helped to deliver their messages of Remembrance. Included were three members of the Catafalque party. Thank you to Mr. Selwood and Mr. Horadam for organizing such a special Assembly. Great scones, Mrs. Porcovich and great sandwiches, canteen staff, our visitors loved them! Thank you also to all the children whose behaviour and participation was exceptional.

Cross Country: Our annual Cross Country run was held on Thursday and I was very pleased to see so

many children participate and try so very hard to improve their run times. Congratulations to all the children who ran well, many of them went on to compete at Zone level last Friday. Mr. Horadam has done a wonderful job organizing Thursday’s run. Miss Beker attended the Zone carnival on Friday with our successful team and was very proud of all our children and their participation. Congratulations Mitchell Hunt. Placed first, and Gilbert Nigane who came fourth. They will go on to the regional carnival. Well done!

Star Card/Student Welfare: Congratulations to the 90% of students who achieved 80% or more of

their stars during term 1. I know that they really enjoyed their reward day on the last Tuesday of last term. The children had a wonderful day participating in tabloid sports and also enjoyed the impromptu disco under the COLA while waiting for refreshments

Last Friday all children took home their new term 2 Star Card. I encourage all children to continue to strive to achieve Personal Best so that by the end of term 2 we have 100% participation at the special reward activity planned. All Star card rewards are tied to our school rules of Quality, Respect and Responsibility.

Thank you to all the parents who support their child by signing the Star Card and encouraging their child to strive harder each week. During the first few weeks of this term the children will begin to receive their 10 star card certificates and all parents and carers will be invited to attend the appropriate assemblies. Looking forward to seeing you there!

5H6 & 5M6 Art gallery Excursion: On Friday the children will travel to Sydney to visit the Art gallery, look at the Archibald entries and

participate in a workshop with tutors from the gallery. Mr. Horadam and Mr. McTaggart will accompany the children. I know that they will have a wonderful time learning about our great artists and participating in some of the many activities planned. The note sent out last week indicated departure and arrival times, in addition, parents with current mobile telephone numbers recorded at school will receive an SMS to update arrival time at school.

School Fees: Just a reminder that we still have a great number of outstanding school fees due for this

year. The $30 per child is used to supplement the high cost of paper and photocopying use to support the teaching and learning program for each child each day. Please help us maintain the very best standard for our children by supporting our school through these school fees. Arrangements can be made if you wish to pay this fee in instalments. Thank you to all the families that have already paid school fees we really appreciate your support. I also encourage any outstanding book pack money due to be settled as soon as possible so that we can continue to pay our bills.

2013 OC Test Applications for Year 4 students:: Parents wishing to apply for Year 5 opportunity

class placement in 2013 on behalf of their children will be able to access the online application site from Monday 30 April 2012, a week before paper applications are scheduled for distribution. I encourage all parents to use the online option wherever possible especially if you have access to the internet, a printer and an email address (not the student's).

Parents will be able to access the online application at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement. Cardboard postcards will be sent to all schools by 7 May 2012 to help publicise the online application and the “Intention to apply” letter sent out to all our y 4 students also shows the website address.

Paper application forms will be available from school from 7 May 2012 (not before) to parents without internet access. Under no circumstances should parents use both online and printed options. Information provided on paper application forms will be scanned so it is imperative that parents be aware that they should not cross out or use whiteout but should start a new paper application if they have made a mistake.

Applications, whether completed online or on paper will close on Friday 18 May 2012.

P&C Mother’s Day Stall: The Mother’s Day stall is on next Friday! The P&C are still looking for

donations for the Mother’s Day stall. Thank you to all the wonderful families who have already sent in contributions. Our P&C always works very hard to make sure that there are sufficient quantity and a variety of gifts for the children to select. If you have bits and pieces to send in please do so by next Wednesday. If you can assist at the stall please let Monique Cooper know.

Our next P&C meeting is on next Monday the 14th at 1.30 pm, in the community room. Please come along and support you association and school.

NAPLAN: Year 3 and 5 children will sit for the National Assessment tests on Tuesday, Wednesday and

Thursday (15, 16 & 17of May). As the name implies the NAPLAN tests will be administered Australia wide in all educational settings. Please make sure that your child is at school all of week 4 so that they can participate in this test plan. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require further information.

Pedestrian Crossing: Our Lollipop ladies continue to experience problems with children who refuse to

walk their scooters across the road when asked. Can you please help us keep our children safe by reminding your child to listen to our crossing ladies and follow their instructions each day. They are doing a fantastic job ensuring that our school crossing zones safe. Please also remember to obey the parking rules as police often patrol these areas. Thank you in anticipation.

Starstruck : The rehearsal for Starstruck will be tomorrow and on the 24th of May. Miss Ragan has been

busily organizing costumes and is now looking for assistance in sewing the garment ready for the dancers. We will be holding a sewing bee here at school on Friday the 25th of May from 9.15 am. Any parents able to assist will be very welcome. Please complete the note included in this newsletter and return it to Miss Ragan.

Fun-Run School Newsletter

We will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year. The event will be held on 1/6/12 within the school grounds. The adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved. All students have received a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school SRC. The funds raised will be used to purchase reading books for the library and classrooms We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission for their child to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward for effort. In the Sponsorship Form you will also find many other benefits like the chance to win a family holiday in Disneyland! Students wanting to train for our event and to receive advice from sporting heroes like Scott Prince, Dale Thomas, Sally Pearson and other elite adidas athletes can do so by logging onto schoolfunrun.com.au/students and clicking create a profile. Students who register will be in the running to WIN a Nintendo Wii and bonus Wii Fit Plus! Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising! Tony Selwood & Prue Dickson SRC Co-ordinators

SRC Cake Stall The SRC will be holding a cake stall on Tuesday 22nd May (week 5). We would greatly appreciate donations of cakes, slices and other confectionery on the day to support this fundraiser. Donations can be brought to Mrs Dickson’s classroom on the morning of the stall. Don’t forget your money to buy lots of yummy treats.

Woolworths Earn and Learn 2012

We are excited to be taking part in the 2012 Woolworths Earn & Learn

program.

Last year, we were able to purchase some great resources with the

points we earned, thanks to you.

From Wednesday 9th May until July 1st 2012, you can collect stickers at

Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you

spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and

gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given

to your children to collect on a special sticker card. Once it is

completed, they can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop

them into your local Woolworths collection box.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of

over 7,000 educational resources including mathematics and English

resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more!

We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful

program. Sticker cards will be sent home next week.
