  • Lesson Directions

    •  Teach students the words to the song. Then teach the rhythm. •  Once students can sing the song, ask them to give you a time (number 1-12). At the end of

the song, you sing “cuckoo” the number of times that the student picked. For added fun, you can show a slide of the time (16-27) they pick, or you can can print out the clock (slide 28) and put brads into it to show the time.

    •  Sing the song and have students point to the beat chart (29-30) while singing. It’s extra fun if someone gets to point to it on the board! (I have used this for beat assessment!)

    •  Teach students the movements. They get in partners. One person is the clock and one is the cuckoo. The clock stands still. The cuckoo walks around the clock. At “open wide”, the cuckoo stands behind the clock and moves their arms up (so the clock is standing with arms parallel to the ground). On “cuckoo”, the cuckoo leans to the side to pop out from behind the clock, moving back and forth each time there is a cuckoo.

    •  Have the kids switch! •  Play it on the instruments! If you are focusing on beat, then play the beat while singing and

posting the beat chart on the board. If you are focusing on rhythm, then you can show the rhythm slides and practice that (rhythm with song on slides 7-10, rhythm cards 31-44). If you are working on melody, then you can put “s” “m” and “L” on the xylophones of glockenspiels for students to play with melody sheets (11-13) or cards (41-58 are rhythms with letters for solfege, 59-72 have notes on staff).
