Harry Herbert, racing manager to Al Shaqab Racing, is looking forward to Sunday and commented, "Touch wood, Treve is in tremendous form and Criquette [Head] is very pleased with her. Fasig Releases Expanded Saratoga Catalogue cont. from p1 Among Fasig-Tipton Saratoga graduates recently inthe headlines is Triple Crown winner American Pharoah(Pioneerof the Nile). AIt has been another electric year thus far forSaratoga graduates, capped by American Pharoah=shistoric run to become racing=s first Triple Crownwinner in 37 years,@ Browning continued. AAnd withcurrent stars like Constitution (Tapit), Stellar Wind(Curlin), Tepin (Bernstein), Tonalist (Tapit) and Rock Fall(Speightstown), Saratoga is a sale that no major buyercan afford to miss.@ The catalogue can now be viewed online atfasigtipton.com. Print catalogues will be available fromall Fasig-Tipton offices by July 6.

NYRA Board Mulls Ways to Lure >Pharoah= cont. from p1 Separate from the Travers conversation, Kay spoke atlength about what he termed as NYRA=s successfulimplementation of turning big race days like the GIBelmont S. into Amust-see@ events. But NYRA special advisor John Hendricksoncautioned that the stacking of so many of the racingassociation=s resources on single, big-event days couldhave the unintended consequence of watering down anentire race meet like Saratoga. AI think it=s fantastic. I think they=re great,@Hendrickson said of the Amust-see@ days.

ABut we have to remember that [at] Saratoga, everyday [used to be] a must-see day. So I hope we=re notdiluting the rest of the calendar as we=re goingforward.@ In ongoing backstretch upgrades, Kay reported thatNYRA is in the midst of a four-year, $28.8 milliondormitory upgrade project at NYRA properties that willbe completed by 2017. NYRA board member Michael Dubb said he knows a$28 million-plus investment sounds like a bigcommitment, but he implored the board to expedite thebackstretch improvements and to do even more forNYRA=s hands-on horse workers. ADoing five [dormitory] cottages at Saratoga soundslike a lot, but there=s hundreds of cottages at Saratoga, and the conditions are not good,@ Dubb said. AThepeople on the backside deserve better.@ In personnel moves on the NYRA board, Wednesday=smeeting was the first chaired by Michael Del Giudice, who was appointed to replace Anthony Bonomo earlierthis month. Bonomo took a leave of absence just beforethe Belmont S. after his company was revealed to haveallegedly provided a Ano-show@ job to the son of theformer New York State senate majority leader. In addition, Andrew Rosen, a longtime NewYork-based horse owner, was chosen to fill the spotvacated by the April resignation of Charles Wait. TheNYRA board is still awaiting an appointee to fill the spotvacated by Barry Ostrager, who also recently resigned.

I first walked on the backside of SunlandPark Racetrack when I was 15 years old in1963 and fell under the spell of horseracing. My dream was to be a racehorsetrainer. For the next 16 years, theracetrack was my only vocation. I wouldgo to tracks all over the country, live intack rooms, gallop horses in the morning

and get jobs in the afternoon. I worked as an assistanttrainer, assistant starter, made charts for the DRF, anddrove a tractor on the track maintenance crew. I couldlive cheap, save my money and only took enough timeaway from it to get my college degree. I worked for avariety of trainers both big and small. I trained my firstwinner when I was 18 and spent the last six yearstraining a small stable of horses through the Midwest. Imet my wife when she was a mutuel clerk at a track inNebraska. She cleaned thousands of stalls, walkedmany hots and nursed our babies in the tack roombetween sets. I was entrenched in the unique world ofthe backside--I was a racetracker and I have seen thegood, bad and the ugly. I was at the zenith of our gamewitnessing huge crowds during mid-week and Iwatched many of the greats run--Secretariat,Buckpasser, and Dr. Fager. I also saw horses hopped, ringers, races fixed, and slow horses put down forinsurance. I once saw a trainer boldly hang a needle inhis horse in the saddling paddock. We have overcome many of our sins on the road to redemption. I may be naive, but I believe that the days are over for ringers, insurance fraud, and for the most part, race fixing. But performance-enhancing drugs are the one sin that remains and the level of its sophistication has grown exponentially. In an earlier time, drugs like etorphine (elephant juice), fentanyl(Sublimaze), Ritalin, apomorhine, amphetamine, nitroglycerin, acepromazine, and cobra venom were used until a test was developed for them. They were all produced and manufactured by pharmaceutical companies and were on the radar. In the mid 70's, I trained at Oaklawn Park and watched Dan Lasater win race after race on his way to national championships and three Eclipse Awards. I have heard that Sublimaze is the drug he was rumored to have been using. He was later convicted and served time for distribution of cocaine. We can name other Eclipse Award-winning owners (and nominees) who have "likely" benefitted from PED's with huge win percentages, only to have their trainers subsequently fall off the map. Times change, but people don't. The trainer=smentality is that if it is not on the illegal list and won'ttest, it is okay to use. Today, the selection andavailability of designer drugs produced in clandestinelabs is unlimited. Computer models have given theunderground chemist the ability to modify a knowndrug, whether anabolic, narcotic or stimulant, tweakingthe molecule and making small doses even morepowerful, and guess what--it doesn't test because ithasn't been identified and there is no organized effortto develop the test.

Balco THG, and dermomorphin (frog juice) are knownexamples. The only reason they were caught was thatsomeone turned in syringes with residue. I did a searchon some drug blogs and found you could order frogjuice off the net back in 2004. Currently, there is amultitude of stimulants based on synthetic cathionoesthat are 10 times more powerful than cocaine. You canbet your last dollar that they are being used somewherebecause there are NO TESTS for them. One drug that has decades of continuous use is EPO.There is no doubt that it has been used at the highestlevel. There has never been a horse to test positive forit post-race because everyone knows that it can only bedetected in the first 24 to 36 hours after administration(requiring a sophisticated expensive test) and it isalways given days or even weeks out. The only way itwill ever be caught is with Out-of-Competition Testing, which is virtually non-existent in North American horseracing. The American Thoroughbred industry is at theproverbial crossroads. The choice is ours: whichdirection will we choose? One path maintains the statusquo with 38 dysfunctional jurisdictions that areunderfunded, politically appointed, and lack the expertiseto challenge the cheaters. The other road offers thechoice of appointing a USADA-type organization havingthe mission, funding and expertise to meet thatchallenge. The pending House bill that will be introducedby Rep. Paul Tonko (NY) offers the opportunity to havethat ultimate drug organization. Cont. p5

Bill Casner Op/Ed cont. There will certainly be those that fear and oppose thispath. For those that cite philosophical opposition (and Iwas one of them at one time) to any Federalinvolvement in our business--they already are. The Fedshave granted us a monopoly on interstate gamblingwith the Interstate Horse Racing Act. Another example:race-fixing in the 60's and 70's nearly destroyed ourindustry until the Feds started prosecuting jockeys andtrainers under the RICO laws. Without Federal help, wewould have lost our industry. Without having a central professional organizationthat is dedicated to creating gold standards for testingwith the authority to conduct out-of-competition testingand administer punishment, we will continue to havethose trainers who will seek an edge and we willcontinue our slide into irrelevance. Whether we want toaccept it or not, the public views horse racing as drug-infested with impotent testing. Are we fed up enough? Are we brave enough totake that leap towards full redemption? God, I can onlyhope so.

ANOTHER DAY FOR THE ASCOT VANQUISHED The fallout from Royal Ascot continues as with everywinner invariably there are many more losers. Twostrongly fancied horses that both failed to perform totheir best ability were Hootenanny (Quality Road) andTelescope (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Wesley Ward=s Breeders=Cup winner was favorite for the G1 CommonwealthCup but never featured and his trainer is at a loss to

explain the lacklustreperformance. "He scopedclean so we're strugglingto find an excuse," saidWard. "That's horseracing I suppose, youcan't win every day. We'll get him home andgive him a thoroughcheck over, run a fewmore tests. He's won aBreeders' Cup so we

know he's not just an early 2-year-old, we'll give himtime and figure out a plan.@ Telescope was also favoriteto win the G2 Hardwicke S. for the second year in arow but dropped out tamely to be a well beaten sixth tostablemate Snow Sky (GB) (Nayef). HighclereThoroughbred Racing=s Harry Herbert is willing to chalkdown the performance as a once off and said,"Telescope is absolutely fine,@ he said. AThe fast groundcombined with the slow tempo was not for him. He ranthe worst race of his life which was incrediblydisappointing but both Ryan Moore and Sir MichaelStoute have said we have just got to put a line throughit.@ Telescope could still be in the mix for the G1 KingGeorge VI & Queen Elizabeth S. next month or possiblythe G2 Prince Of Wales=s S. at Newmarket July 9.

DUNLOP EYES ELUSIVE MELBOURNE WIN Trainer Ed Dunlop has some serious decisions tomake about where to target his new stablestar Trip ToParis (Ire) (Champs Elysees {GB}). Successful in ahandicap at Lingfield in April off a mark of 88, last

week=s G1 Ascot Goldwinner is now up to arating of 113 followinghis biggest triumph andone could argue that the4-year-old is stillimproving. Dunlop hasgone agonizingly close towinning the G1 Melbourne Cup, onthree occasions with RedCadeaux (GB) (CadeauxGenereux {GB}) and not

surprisingly a trip to Flemington is being stronglyconsidered with his highly progressive stablemate. Before that though Dunlop is eyeing another valuableprize closer to home.

"We are considering the G2 Goodwood Cup. It's avery valuable race. Of course, he'll have a penalty anddiscussions amongst the partnership are very muchinvolved about going to the Melbourne Cup," reportedDunlop. The Newmarket trainer added, "He's not aflamboyant worker, but the difference is he has a turnof foot. As you saw in the Ascot Gold Cup he reallyquickened up the straight. He's won at a mile and a halfso he's not that slow. He=s also got a wonderfultemperament which would stand him in great stead fora long journey to Australia.@

MUHAARAR ON TARGET FOR JULY CUP The result of next month=s G1 Darley July Cup atNewmarket can often have a bearing on who iscrowned champion European sprinter, and at this stage,30 horses stand their ground for the July Courseshowpiece, including impressive G1 Commonwealth

Cup winner Muhaarar (GB)(Oasis Dream {GB}). His Ascotwin would suggest he isprobably the best 3-year-oldsprinter in Europe at the momentand his trainer Charlie Hills isvery much looking forward tothe next test July 11 which willsee him taking on his elders forthe first time. "Muhaarar lost very littleweight after the CommonwealthCup, no more than five kilos, andhasn't left an oat since, so theplan is for him to run in the July

Cup," reported Hills. "He's improving all the time and isa very exciting horse. You've got to hope that we are inchampion sprinter territory with him now. The July Cupis pretty much the biggest sprint of the year and itwould mean an awful lot for the yard to win it for thefirst time. A stiff six furlongs is good for him soNewmarket's uphill finish should suit and he's prettyversatile ground-wise.@ Muharrar will bid to emulate hissire Oasis Dream who won the July Cup in 2003 as a3-year-old en route to being crowned champion 3-year-old sprinter the same year.

HOBBS ALL SET FOR CURRAGH TASK G1 Epsom Derby runner-up Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling)is a short priced favorite to go one place better in theG1 Irish Derby at The Curragh Saturday and his trainerJohn Gosden has reported the colt to have comethrough his last piece of work in pleasing fashion. AHeworked Wednesday morning with William Buick on himand we were happy with him and the horse seems ingood order,@ said Gosden, who is seeking his first winin the race. AWe would appreciate a shower or two and

something close togood ground, but weare pleased with thehorse and we=ll beheading over, all beingwell between now andthe weekend.@ Thetrainer feels the fair, galloping Curragh trackwill be ideal for JackHobbs, but he istaking nothing forgranted when it comesto the opposition.Gosden commented,AHe handled Epsom

surprisingly well for a tall, rangy, horse and we hopethe Curragh would suit him better. We fully respect thequality of the field, which includes a G1 Oaks winnerand a G1 Irish 1000 Guineas winner if she runs, but it=snot a race I got greatly involved with in the past, so itwould be extremely nice to win.@ A top class supporting weekend card ensures therewill be no shortage of British challengers at TheCurragh, including Ralph Beckett who hopes to runSecret Gesture (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G1 Pretty PollyS. Sunday. The filly was last seen winning the G2 Middleton S.at York. AShe has come out of her Yorkwin in good shape and the Pretty Polly is a race we feltwould suit her and we think the Curragh is a track thatwill be right up her street,@ Beckett said. AIt was a goodperformance at York and if she produces that again shewill be in the mix.@
