Phonics

Phonics teaches children to read and to spell.

Words are made up from small units of sound. Some sounds are made up of one letter eg

s, a, t, p, i, n

Some sounds are made up of 2 or 3 letters eg

ch, sh, th, igh, ear, air

Phonics is fun!20 minutes a day, learning to see the sounds in

written words and the blend them together to read them.

Eg cat chain

And to hear the separate sounds in words and then be able to write them eg “chairs”

Games, computer activities, whiteboards. http://www.phonicsplay.co.ukhttp://www.familylearning.org.uk/

Phase What will my child be learning?

Phase 1 (Nursery)

Listen to and become familiar with sounds eg environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice sounds and finally oral blending and segmenting.

Phase 2 (Nursery/Reception)

Read and write 23 common sounds. Blending sounds together to make words. Segmenting words into their separate sounds. Beginning to read simple captions.

Phase 3 (Reception)

Read and write further sounds including those which are made up of 2 and 3 letters eg ch, sh, th, igh. Reading and writing captions, sentences and questions. On completion of this phase, children will have learnt the "simple code", i.e. one way of writing every sound we hear in the English language.

Phase 4 (Year One)

Children learn to read and write longer words with consonants next to each other e.g. swim, clap, jump,

Phase 5 (Year One)

Move on to the "complex code". Children learn more ways of writing each sound for the sounds which they already know. Eg pie, high, cry, bike

Phase 6 (Year Two)

Working on spelling, including prefixes and suffixes, doubling and dropping letters etc.

Tricky WordsAlso, throughout, children build up their knowledge of ‘tricky’ words: words that break the rules

and they just have to memorise how to read and spell eg the, people, said

A Real Treat!

Tom was very happy. It was the weekend and he was off to the beach with his mum and dad, his puppy and baby Pete. ‘Help me pack the green bag,’ said Mum. ‘We need sun cream and lots to eat’. Tom got into his seat in the back of the car and the puppy got on his knee. Pete held his toy sheep. Off they went. Beep! Beep! At the end of the street there was a big truck. It had lost a wheel. ‘Oh, no,’ said Tom. ‘We’ll be here for a week!’ Dad went to speak to the driver to see if he could help. They put the wheel back on. Then Dad said, ‘I must hurry, we need to get to the beach’. At last they got to the sea. Tom and Pete had an ice cream. Mum and Dad had a cup of tea. The puppy went to sleep under a tree.
