Read the title and the blurb with the children. Explain that a firefly is a type of beetle that glows in the dark. Read through the contents together. Support children to decode new and unfamiliar words. Model using a range of strategies, e.g. looking for parts of words that are familiar, and using their knowledge of other similar words. Ask children to select a poem title which appeals to them and explain why to the rest of the group. Reading and responding Ask children to turn to the poem that they have selected and read it quietly to themselves. Invite children to tell the group something that they liked about their choice. Model reading the poem ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Firefly’ aloud with expression. Reread the poem and ask children to close their eyes and make a picture in their mind’s eye. Ask the children to read the book independently and aloud to p21. Remind them that they may wish to read each poem more than once, and that they may wish to think about the pictures that the poem paints in their mind’s eye.
