The weather last month has been very challenging for

all of us, that we experienced our first snow day in 8

years! Finally however, spring officially arrived at

5:58 p.m. Wednesday March 20th to everyone’s

delight.

As a school, our main focus this term lies within

supporting teaching and learning through our

Growth mindset and equity lens. Recently, several

staff members attended a Board Equity session and together we will

examine teaching practices as they relate to positions of power and

privilege and Inclusive Design. In addition, teachers met to review

math practices and new resources have been ordered to support our

programs. Thorough active collaboration, we have developed a school

- wide literacy continuum for the purpose of creating common teach-

ing practices and scaffolding of language expectations as our students

move up the grades. At the Kindergarten level, our teachers and early

childhood educators have been working on Interactive Read A-louds.

Once again, our various school committees met to plan and

organize valuable programs and initiatives for our students. Staff and

students, organized a tribute to Greek culture and folklore celebrat-

ing Greek Heritage Month. The Eco club led by Mrs. Hough, Ms.

Thistle and Mr. Naumann organized “Earth Hour”; Mr. Keno and Mr.

Kuran are launching the Pals program and several Scientists in the

School have been booked for the coming weeks. The SAC has

organized the annual chocolate fundraiser and our school-wide trip

will take us to Markham theatre on May the 2nd and the screening of

the Disney nature movie: “Penguins”

A reminder that school will be closed on Friday April 19th and

Monday April 22nd for the Easter weekend. For our friends and

families celebrating upcoming Holy days we extend our well wishes

for a safe and healthy time with families, friends

and loved ones.

Earth Hour

The T.D.S.B. Earth Hour was held on Friday March 29th, from 2:00 -

3:00 p.m., followed by a world-wide hour on Saturday March 30th,

from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. At Bridlewood, everyone was encouraged

to reduce their consumption of electricity as a pledge to help reduce the

effects of climate change. Classes engaged in conversations on how we

can learn without relying so heavily on electronics. It was an op-

portunity to emphasize that Earth Hour is a symbolic gesture, and a

commitment to make our daily habits more sustainable.

During our Earth Hour, classes chose to take part in alternative

activities including:

-students creating and posting pledges to commit to reducing energy

consumption beyond the hour

- read-aloud books with environmental themes

- a nature walk

- an art or craft activity

- Visiting sites such as http://www.ontarioecoschools.org/document/

Poster and Multimedia Challenge

Instructions for Students

How do I help create a Plastic Free World?

If plastic pollution was bagged up and arranged across all of the world’s shorelines, we

could build a plastic wall around every shoreline and the sea. Plastics wash up on beach-

es and can be found in the stomachs of more than half the world’s sea turtles and nearly

all of its marine birds. Plastics litter our cities and oceans, and growing evidence shows

how they contribute to health problems in humans and animals. By 2050, there will be

more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans! This is a problem we can help solve by

cleaning up plastic trash, drastically reducing the amount of plastic used and recycling

100 percent of the rest. How do you limit your use of single use plastic?

Elementary and Secondary students are invited to display

their creativity and to share with us the ways in which they

can work towards “Building a Single-Use Plastics Free

World”. What do YOU think is the best way to limit the use

of single use plastic items? All entries will be displayed on-

site at Eco Fair 2019 and will also receive a certificate of par-

ticipation.
