Dear Parishioners, This weekend 55 men from our parish have gathered in the Paloma Centre for the menAlive weekend. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit be with each one of them and guide them as they seek to explore new dimensions in their Christian faith. First Holy Communion We extend a warm welcome to the families and friends who have joined us this week as their children make their First Holy Communion. This is an exciting time for the children and their families but it is also an exciting time for our parish as over 100 young adults for the first time will be welcomed to God’s Table of the Eucharist as they share the banquet of Christ’s sacrifice, calling God their Father in the midst of the Church as they receive Holy Communion. Let all of us keep the children and their families in our prayers, as they make this momentous step in their lives. From the Archdiocese of Brisbane For the second time in two years, the Queensland Parliament will debate whether to make abortion legal. The draft bill will allow abortion until the day that a baby is born – late-term abortions will be legal in Queensland as long as two doctors agree that “in all the circumstances, the termination should be performed”. This will mean that social reasons will be enough for a legal abortion of a full-term baby. The Archdiocese wants to ensure that Queenslanders understand this new bill and have time to consider it. We believe both lives matter and the bill should not go ahead. Please visit our website to learn more: https://community.actonit.com.au/aob/ For your information, I have included a link here to a video that the Archbishop has made on the abortion laws: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6E7wAwtXv8 We need your help. Dear Parishioners,

This weekend 55 men from our parish have gathered in the Paloma Centre for the menAlive weekend. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit be with each one of them and guide them as they seek to explore new dimensions in their Christian faith.

First Holy Communion

We extend a warm welcome to the families and friends who have joined us this week as their children make their First Holy Communion.

From the Archdiocese of Brisbane

For the second time in two years, the Queensland Parliament will debate whether to make abortion legal. We need your help. Please consider signing the petition in the front of the church today.

2018 Year of Youth

In acknowledgement of the Church’s Year of the Youth, Branch 1 of the Knights of the Southern Cross are hosting a talk by Teresa McGrath, Youth Project Consultant with the Archdiocese of Brisbane, on the subject of YOUTH in the church on Thursday, 6th September at 7.30pm in St Michael’s Church Hall, 250 Banks Street, Dorrington. VOCATION VIEW: John's Gospel reveals God's promise of the Word made flesh. This is revealed through the sacrifice made by Christ: "I am the living

bread, come down from heaven ... the bread I give is my flesh for the life of the world ...". Do this in memory of Him.

Archdiocese of Brisbane Policy Statement

...for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Mark 10:14

The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that Children, young people and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm. They are to be treasured, nurtured and safeguarded by all.

‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS Looking to Jesus: The Vocation of the Family

Growing in Conjugal Love

121. Marriage is a precious sign, for “when a man and a woman celebrate the sacrament of marriage, God is, as it were, ‘mirrored’ in them; he impresses in them his own features and the indelible character of his love. Marriage is the icon of God’s love for us. Indeed, God is also communion: the three Persons of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit live eternally in perfect unity. And this is precisely the mystery of marriage: God makes of the two spouses one single existence”. This has concrete daily consequences, because the spouses, “in virtue of the sacrament, are invested with a true and proper mission, so that, starting with the simple ordinary things of life they can make visible the love with which Christ loves his Church and continues to give his life for her”.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time : Year B

First Reading: Proverbs 9: 1-6 Our reading is an invitation to be nourished in the hospitality of wisdom; a fine house, a table spread with delights and a life seeking understanding.

Second Reading: Ephesians 5: 15-20 Paul offers us some insights into what it means to live the good Christian life, set within in the framework of the Trinity, and reminding us of the place of thanksgiving for all things.

Gospel: John 6: 51-58 Jesus offers that life and freedom are found in him, a life that is nourished in the power of the Eucharist. As bread, Jesus is at the centre of all that sustains life.

Functions for Women

The Pastoral Council has approved the formation of a committee to oversee a function specifically for the women of our parish. It is envisaged that these functions would occur about every three months and encompass a blend of social connection and a dedicated faith component. To this end we would like to ask for self-nominations for committee members. If you would like to be part of the process to create a friendly and supportive space for like-minded women of our parish, please let us know.

If you feel you would like to help steer and shape this quarterly gathering, we would love to hear from you. Email Cathy Johnstone ([email protected]) or Kate Smith ([email protected]) and tell us a little bit about yourself.

ReMAINING YOUTH NITES FOR TERM 3

#Invitation #Eucharist #Understanding #Grace #Humility #Wisdom

In the Old Testament, God was pleased to use trivial and insignificant things to fulfill His purposes. For

example, He used the flag on a cradle of a babe, which won the heart of Pharaoh’s daughter. He used the

shepherd’s stick of Moses, which worked miracles in Egypt. He also used the slingshot of David, which

overthrew the Philistines. • God continues this through the Eucharist; He turns simple bread and wine into

the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ. • In each of our lives, He also takes the little we offer Him and

transforms it into something dynamic. He can take five minutes of prayer in the morning and open our eyes

to see His presence throughout our entire day. He can take the smallest act of love, like washing the dishes

and convert a sinner’s heart. • How can we be more aware of the small things we can offer to God? Do we

trust that it can make a big difference in our lives? • Better yet, do we realize that God can use us even

though we may be considered small or insignificant in the eyes of the world? • As we go forward from Mass,

seek to imitate our heavenly Father. How can you use small things to make a big difference in the lives of

others? E.g., a compliment, taking time to listen, or a word of gratitude.

KEY THEMES:

1. God invites us to abide in Him as He abides in us. We do not consume God as much as we are consumed by His grace.

2. God desires complete unity with us — so intimate that He becomes a part of us.

3. God humbles Himself so that we may receive Him most intimately.

4. The Holy Spirit (wisdom) guides us to truth, Jesus Christ.
