THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 15, 2019
TERCER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO DICIEMBRE 15, 2019
THIS WEEK, MANY FAMILIES will bring out of storage
the creche or Christmas crib or Nativity set and set it up in
a place of honor as a prayerful reminder of Christ’s birth in
Bethlehem. It is a holy custom, one which is generally
credited to St. Francis of Assisi (although the practice was
known prior to his time). St. Francis gets the credit be-
cause in 1223, he laid before Pope Honorius III plans for a
scene representative of the principals and place of the Na-
tivity, an idea to which the pope is said to have responded
enthusiastically. Come Christmas, Francis was at Greccio
in Italy, where, with the help of his friend Giovanni Velita,
he proceeded to build a crib and he arranged about it fig-
ures of Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and animals com-
monly associated with the event. But that’s not the end of
the story. Legend has it that Francis acted as deacon at
Christmas Midnight Mass at Greccio, and as the choir
chanted the in carnatus est (“and the Word as made
flesh”), Francis genuflected in meditation on the marvel of
the Incarnation and behold what appeared in his arms but
a babe surrounded by a brilliant light! It was the Christ
Child! Giotto commemorated the legend in a painting now
found in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. The devotion
inspired by St. Francis spread, and today, churches
throughout Christendom set up Christmas cribs during the
nativity season. The Franciscan church of Ara Coeli in
Rome has one of the largest and most beautiful. It must
be hard, though, to compete with the claims of the Basilica
of St. Mary Major across town, which is said to house five
of the six pieces of wood that formed the actual crib of Je-
sus. Taken from a sycamore tree, the relics are reputed to
have been brought from the Holy Land in the 640s during
the pontificate of Theodore I, who feared they might fall
into the hands of pagan marauders.
STOP AND TAKE A LOOK AT OUR JESSE TREE, our
Advent symbol this year, which is the family tree of Jesus.
Each of the decorations is a symbol of an ancestor of Je-
sus found in the Bible. This week, we consider:
The Rose and Peacock: symbols of Mary our Blessed
Mother. Mary is the “Mystic Rose” who gives us the Ro-
sary. In sacred art, often when Mary is pictured, there is a
peacock nearby; the beauty of the peacock reminds us of
our beautiful Blessed Virgin Mary.
Bread and Grapes: reminders of the Eucharist. Jesus
is the Bread of Life, who gave his life and shed his Blood
for us,
The Lion: a reminder of Daniel who refused to re-
nounce his faith and so was thrown to the lions by the evil
King of the Babylonians. However, the lions did not harm
Daniel. The lion reminds us of the forces of evil in our
world, but we do not have to be afraid because Jesus has
saved us.
The Big Fish: a reminder of Jonah who was swallowed
up and spent three days in the belly of the Big Fish. Jesus
spent three days in the tomb before his Resurrection.
to Niño!
eron daño a Daniel.
THIS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 17
th
(A WEEK BEFORE
CHRISTMAS), WE BEGIN SINGING THE ADVENT “O”
ANTIPHONS. These beautiful chants (on which the hymn,
“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” is based) are called “O
Antiphons” because each of them begins with the word “O”
and invokes one of the titles of Christ. Perhaps you can
pray them this week:
December 17
th
: “O Wisdom, O holy word of God, you
govern all creation with your strong yet tender care. Come
and show your people the way to salvation.” According to
Jewish tradition, Lady Wisdom is the source of all
knowledge; she brings peace and health. Wisdom was pre-
sent with God since before the world began. The whole of
the universe was set in order by her. Since then, our world
has become confused by sin; our lives are unbalanced and
sickness brings sorrow to our world. But soon will come the
day when Christ, the Wisdom of God, will rule over all peo-
ple, and with Him will come knowledge and healing and the
resurrection of the dead. “O come, O Wisdom from on
high, who governs all things tenderly. To us the path of
knowledge show, and teach us in your ways to go.”
December 18
th
: “O Sacred Lord (Adonai) of ancient Isra-
el who showed yourself to Moses in the burning bush, who
gave him your holy name on Sinai mountain. Come,
stretch out your mighty hand to set us free.” On Mount Si-
nai, God spoke to Moses from a burning bush and dis-
closed His divine name, YAHWEH, meaning “I am who
am.” Out of respect, we do not say God’s name, but rather,
Adonai, “Lord,” which reminds us of God’s mighty acts of
love and protection. Jesus is the Lord who comes to us not
in a burning bush but humble and weak as a baby in a
manger. “O come, O come, great Lord of might, who to
your tribes on Sinai’s height, in ancient times did give
the Law, in cloud and majesty and awe.”
December 19
th
: “O Flower of Jesse’s stem, you have
been raised up as a sign for all people; the nations bow
down in worship before you. Come, let nothing keep you
from coming to our aid.” Jesse was the father of King Da-
vid, and Jesus was descended from the Davidic line. The
title “Flower of Jesse” praises Jesus as our monarch. But
Jesus is different from any other king. He rules with justice
and peace, and gave up his life for his people. And all the
baptized will share in Jesus’ crown. “O come, O Flower
of Jesse’s root, before whom all the world stands
mute; We trust your mighty pow’r to save, and give us
vict’ry o’er the grave.”
December 20
th
: “O Key of David, O royal power of Israel,
controlling at your will the gate of heaven. Come, break
down the prison walls of death for those who dwell in dark-
ness and the shadow of death, and lead your captive peo-
ple into freedom.” The Lord Jesus, the Key of David, will
open the gate of heaven; Christ will call each of the dead
by name, saying, ‘Arise my love, my lovely one, and come
away.’” “O come. O Key of David, come, and open wide
our heav’nly home. Make safe the way that leads on
high, and close the path to misery.”
ESTE MARTES, 17 DE DICIEMBRE (UNA SEMANA AN-
TES DE LA NAVIDAD), COMENZAMOS A CANTAR LOS
ANTIFONOS ADVIENTOS "O".
conocimiento; ella trae paz y salud.
entonces, nuestro mundo se ha confundido por el pecado;
tristeza a nuestro mundo.
Green Tip: This Christmas season, offer/ask for gifts
that don't involve buying anything. For example, babysit-
ting, offer to teach something you know how to do, dona-
tion to charity, certified carbon offsets, seeds from your
garden, tickets to an event (musical, lecture series, play,
concert, etc.), nontoxic house cleaning service, gift certifi-
cates for movie or music downloads, etc. More ideas
at: Non-Consumer Gift Ideas.
December 21st: “O Radiant Dawn, splendor of eternal light,
sun of justice. Come, shine on those who dwell in dark-
ness and the shadow of death.” Thank God for the dark-
ness of winter, for through it we can know that Christ is our
sun. Soon the light will return to the earth. Days will grow
longer and winter will pass into spring. “O come, O Day-
spring, come with cheer, O Sun of justice, now draw
near. Disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death’s
dark shadow put to flight.” (to be continued).
A ST. JOSEPH SWEATSHIRT, T-SHIRT OR MUG makes
a perfect Christmas gift. Each is emblazoned with our Par-
ish name in English and Spanish. The sweatshirts are only
$22 each; the T-shirts are $10 each. And the mugs are
$5 each (we still have a few hats for $15 each). The net
proceeds from these sales will go to the “Raise our Roof”
fund to put a new roof on our Church. On sale after all
Masses. Get yours before they’re gone.
THIS WEEKEND, WE BEGIN SELLING TICKETS FOR
OUR THIRD - AND FINAL - BIG BEEF RAFFLE. The
prize this week is a HALF BEEF and the Raffle will be held
after the first of the year. The winner will automatically
qualify for the final Raffle for a freezer for storing the beef.
Remember: all proceeds from ticket sales will go to our
“RAISE OUR ROOF CAMPAIGN.” Thanks to the Klc
Family for donating the beef and selling tickets after Mass.
