The publication of Weekly Alumni Profiles in sections of the local media in 2010 was part of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s 20th anniversary celebrations, held under the theme, “Honouring our Past – Forging Ties for the Future.”

A short questionnaire was sent to each of the graduates selected to be completed and returned, from which the information for each profile was compiled and sent to the media, specifically two online news entities and one newspaper.

In this regard, the HLSCC Administration remains grateful for the free space given by BVI Platinum, Virgin Islands Standpoint and BVI News for the publication of the alumni profiles throughout the year.

In this publication, the profiles have been edited for brevity and are not listed in the chronological order in which they were published.

Message by Karl Dawson, Ph.D.President, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College

“You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.”

TOM BROKAW

Any educational institution is best judged by its graduates. At the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College we believe that the educational experience we offer will not only enhance the lives of our graduates, but through them, organizations and communities as well.

This publication presents a sample of individuals who chose HLSCC to help them achieve their goals in life. The persons featured represent the range of programmes offered by our College, varied paths chosen upon completion – workplace, entrepreneurship, professional certification or advanced studies - and of course persons of varying ages, national origins, interests and background. We believe that collectively our graduates represent the rich tapestry of skills, attitudes and personalities needed for any community to thrive.

You will learn of individuals who have continued their studies outside of the British Virgin Islands and found the academic foundation laid by our institution to be a sound one. You will also learn of persons whose career growth has been positively impacted by their participation in our course offerings.

We are proud of our graduates and pleased to give you a glimpse of the types of persons who have come through our doors.

Graduates Who Went Into The Workforce

Linda Graham AuguisteTeacherJost Van Dyke Primary SchoolGraduated 2005

Linda Graham Auguiste is currently a Class I Teacher at the Jost Van Dyke Primary School. While she was in primary school she admired the work of a special teacher, Pearlette Fraser-Smith, who became her mentor and who was Principal at Jost Van Dyke Primary for over ten years. Linda, from a very young age, started observing her mentor’s style of teaching and, almost without realizing it, began teaching her siblings at home during the school holidays.

Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programmes and future:HLSCC continues to fulfill its mission and, in the future, I believe that one day the College will become a university, creating new programmes for students to achieve higher degrees.

Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your lifeMy dream was to attend college and receive a degree in education, and HLSCC was the institution that helped me achieve my goal. I was able to attend school without having to leave my family. My time at the College was enjoyable and challenging. It may seem strange to others, but I enjoyed working under pressure and completing several projects at the same time.

Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programmes and futureHLSCC was the foundation for my career. With tourism being one of the BVI’s financial pillars, the imminent construction of the Culinary Arts Centre at the College will no doubt enhance this industry. As someone trained in Culinary Arts, I would like to see the institution providing top notch, high quality training in this area.

Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your lifeAfter obtaining my Certificate of Achievement in Food and Beverage Management Services, I was able to become a small business owner in 2003. With my Associate Degree in Culinary Arts, I consider myself a well-rounded chef who is able to train whomever I am called upon to train. I also believe I can fit in to any type of food operation.

Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programmes and futureHLSCC is definitely an asset to the BVI community. Learning is an ongoing process and the College enables persons at various stages in their life, whether straight from high school or the workforce, to further their education. I believe the College is a convenient option for persons in the BVI seeking personal growth and development.

Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your lifeI fully enjoyed the time I spent at HLSCC. I valued being able to continue my education in the field that I love without having to leave my daughter or my job. The automotive industry is constantly evolving and technicians today have to stay on par with their knowledge and application of changing technologies. The education I received ay HLSCC helped me to do so.

Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programmes and futureHLSCC is definitely crucial to the development of the BVI. It assists in the training of people, making them better able to take advantage of the economic and other opportunities that emerge in society.

Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your lifeIt was really a blessing to be able to attend HLSCC and receive my training locally, thus saving huge costs when compared to travelling and studying overseas. I enjoyed the experiences and the relationships I developed both with members of staff, faculty and fellow students. I know I have improved both personally and professionally as a result of my attendance at HLSCC.

After graduating from secondary school in 1984, he started working at the Department of Agriculture, where he still serves 26 years later. He started as a Storekeeper, was promoted to Agricultural Trainee, first in the Extension Division then the Crops Division, and now serves as Quarantine Assistant II. During this period of time, Mr. Daniel was called on two tours of duty as a Reserve for the United States National Guard: the first mission was to Haiti in 1984 and the other, Iraq, in 2005. Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programmes and future:I think the future of the College remains a very bright one, in that it strives to keep up with a world that consistently demands that students be of a high calibre.

Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your lifeI forged lasting friendships which for me is very important. Most of my instructors were very energetic and demanding. They made everyone want to be in class. When assignments were due, they had to be submitted by the deadline or students had to suffer the consequences, and that’s how I understood college life should be.

Thoughts about the College, its role, mission, programmes and future:HLSCC is truly a community college in every sense and I am sure it can operate at the university level if that should become necessary. It serves as an extraordinary institution in the educational life of many people in the BVI. The College has a wide range of programmes that students are benefitting from.

Thoughts about time spent at HLSCC, education received and impact on your lifeFor the first time, I was taught independence and critical thinking. While the institution encouraged a serious approach to work, it also gave me time to bond with old friends and meet many news ones as well. Without HLSCC I would not have accomplished what I have so far. With an Associate Degree from the College, I am one step further in advancing my studies and career.
