INSULATION & DRAINAGEThere are many critical factors which must be takeninto consideration when designing a flat roofconstruction. Two of these factors – insulation andrainwater run–off can be addressed with one productrange: Kingspan Thermataper zero ODP Systemsfrom Kingspan Insulation Limited.

Kingspan Thermataper zero ODP Systems areavailable in a range of facings which means they canbe used under most waterproofing systems.

A SOLUTION TO WATER PONDINGA high proportion of flat roof failures can be traced tothe inability of the roof to shed rainwater from thesurface, leading to the formation of water ponds.Ponding of rainwater can seriously decrease thedesign life of the roof by subjecting the membrane toattack from many sources such as:● thermal stress;● alkaline formation; and● mould growth.

Excessive ponding can also increase roof loading,causing further deflection of the deck, which onlyadds to the problem of drainage. Patching is not apractical option: the only effective solution is toeliminate the ponding by designing an adequate fallinto the roof.

Kingspan Thermataper zero ODP Systems havebeen developed to solve these problems KingspanThermataper zero ODP Systems encompass arange of tapered insulation boards, which can bedesigned to provide adequate roof falls.

NEW FLAT ROOFSOn new roofs, the use of Kingspan Thermataperzero ODP Systems eliminate the need to incorporatea fall into the design of the structure, which canrequire complex structural supports (e.g. on metal roofdecks or firrings).

Using Kingspan Thermataper zero ODP Systems toachieve the requirements of the new BuildingRegulations/Standards could yield a saving of at least21% over the cost of using alternative methods tocreate a fall in a flat roof for drainage purposes.

Kingspan Thermataper zero ODP Systems are alsoa simpler alternative to screeding as they do notpresent the risk of an overloaded structure due toexcessive screed depths, avoids a wet trade andavoids the need for the drying out of screeds.

Kingspan Thermataper zero ODP Systems areestimated to be as little as 1% of the weight of asolution using screed to falls with a flat insulationboard.

Because Kingspan Thermataper zero ODP Systemsdo not need time to dry out, they save time in thescheduling of a construction project. A recent analysisof screed to falls systems shows that, in the examplesanalysed, they may require between 100 and 200days to dry.

REFURBISHMENT OF EXISTING FLAT ROOFSOn existing roofs, Kingspan Thermataper zeroODP System and a new waterproofing system can belaid on top of the original waterproofing. This eliminatesthe need for stripping down the roof to deck level, andthe provision of a vapour check is not required.

The existing insulation/substrate and waterproofingmust be sound to provide a satisfactory surface for theKingspan Thermataper zero ODP System. In allcases, the risk of interstitial condensation must be fullyassessed (please see ‘Heat Loss/Condensation Risk’ onpage 8).

This ensures that the most cost–effective solution forany problem is identified and that the end result is aroof, which meets your specification for rainwaterrun–off and insulation requirements.

ROOF SURVEYThe design of a successful Kingspan Thermataperzero ODP System must take several factors intoaccount:● the position of the roof outlets;● the extent of water run–off required;● the dimensions of the roof;● the presence of any existing falls or steps on the

roof; and● the location and dimensions of permanent

projections such as roof lights, vents etc., andperimeter restrictions.

Normally, an architects drawing should suffice fornew roofs. Any additional information required wouldbe requested by our Tapered Roofing Division beforedesign commences.

On existing roofs, a free survey of the roof will becarried out by one of our experienced surveyors tocollect the required information.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONSUtilising our CAD system, even the most complextapered system can be designed quickly andeffectively, ready for client approval. The design willillustrate the required direction of drainage and willalso take into account U–value, condensation riskanalysis and wind uplift requirements, as well asminimum/maximum rise restrictions. Amendments orrevisions can be easily incorporated.

HEAT LOSS/CONDENSATION RISKIncluded in the design service is the calculation ofcondensation risk in accordance with BS 5250: 1989(1995) (Code of practice for control of condensation inbuildings) and as defined in BS 6229: 1982 (Code ofpractice for flat roofs with continuously supportedcoverings), based on the psychometric conditions for agiven occupancy/building use.

It is possible to design for minimum or average U–valuesdependent on the client's requirements. However, thecompleted scheme ensures that any dew point ispredicted above the vapour control layer at the minimumboard thickness, whilst also ensuring any condensationrisk is within the safe limits of tolerance of the insulationand the guidelines of BS 6229: 1982 (Code of practicefor flat roofs with continuously supported coverings).

WIND LOADINGThe requirement for mechanical fixing is alsodetermined in accordance with the requirements of BS 6399: Part 2: 1997 (Code of practice for windloads) taking into account:–● length/width/height of the building;● orientation of the building;● wind speed;● aspect (i.e. on a hill side); and● topographical value of the surrounding area.

SPANNING ON METAL DECKSThe designer’s attention is drawn to the requirementthat insulation boards comply with the minimumthicknesses shown in the table below, when used overmetal decks with trough openings as shown:

COMPLETIONOnce the final design has been accepted by theclient and the Kingspan Thermataper zero ODPSystem is ordered, a working drawing will beproduced. This drawing will clearly set out the falland direction of pitch and fixing of each board type.Installation of Kingspan Thermataper zero ODPSystems is simple using these easy to follow drawingsand to facilitate laying each board type is packedseparately in labelled shrink wrapped packs.

The boards are lightweight but strong, and are easyto handle and cut on site using a fine toothed saw.Our Product Managers will be pleased to provideany additional assistance at fixing stage if required.Please contact our Tapered Roofing Division.

GENERAL INFORMATION

SUSTAINABILITYIt is widely recognised that there are four main globalenvironmental sustainability issues: global warming,non–renewable resource depletion, toxic pollution and ozone depletion, and that these global issues far outweigh any local sustainability issues in their need forimmediate attention and potential impact from inaction.

Recent studies have shown that the first three issuesare essentially one. The extraction and consumption(burning) of fossil fuels is by far the most significantcontributor to global warming, non–renewableresource depletion and toxic pollution.

Therefore, saving energy by specifying the lowest U–value possible and using zero ODP insulationmaterials are the best actions to take when consideringsustainability for the insulation requirements of a building.

Kingspan Thermataper zero ODPSystems is manufactured without the useof CFCs/HCFCs and has zero OzoneDepletion Potential (ODP).

In the past, erroneously, the relativesustainability of insulation materials has been comparedon the basis of embodied energy. It is now known thatthe embodied energy of insulation materials isinsignificant compared with the energy saved byinsulation over the lifetime of a building in which it isused and so is of limited importance. However, it is amatter of social responsibility to state the environmentalimpact in the manufacture of a product, and a full LifeCycle Analysis (LCA) rather than embodied energy isrecognised as the preferred tool to achieve this.

An LCA, independently certified by theBRE, has been carried out for UKproduced Kingspan Thermataper zeroODP Systems and a copy is availablefrom Kingspan Insulation, see rear cover.Kingspan Insulation Limited is the first insulationmanufacturer to publish openly such information.

AVAILABILITYKingspan Thermataper zero ODP System isavailable through specialist insulation distributors andselected roofing merchants throughout the UK, Irelandand Europe.

PACKAGINGThe boards are supplied in labelled packsshrinkwrapped in polythene. The labels show productname, board size, type and quantity. Each packcontains one board type which facilitates the laying ofthe system.

STORAGEThe packaging of Kingspan Thermataper zeroODP System should not be considered adequate forlong term outside protection. Ideally boards should bestored inside a building. If however, outside storagecannot be avoided the boards should be stackedclear of the ground and covered with a polythenesheet or weatherproof tarpaulin. Boards that havebeen allowed to get wet should not be used.

HEALTH AND SAFETYKingspan Insulation products are chemically inert andsafe to use. A leaflet on this topic which satisfies therequirements set out in the Control of SubstancesHazardous to Health Regulations 1988 (COSHH) isavailable from our Technical Services Department (seerear cover).

Warning – do not stand on or otherwise support your weight on theseboards unless they are fully supported by a load–bearing surface.

Kingspan Thermataper TT46 zero ODP Only: Please note that the reflective surface on this product is designed toenhance its thermal performance. As such, it will reflect light as well asheat, including ultraviolet light. Therefore, if this board is being installedduring very bright or sunny weather, it is advisable to wear UV protectivesunglasses or goggles, and if the skin is exposed for a significant periodof time, to protect the bare skin with a UV block sun cream.

WATER VAPOUR CONTROL The need for a separate vapour control layer withKingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP in a warmroof construction should be assessed in accordancewith BS 5250: 1989 (1995) and as defined inBS 6229: 1982. A minimum vapour control layershould consist of a coated roofing felt complying withBS 747: 2000 Type 3B, or any appropriatemetal–cored vapour control layer.

Allowance should be made for the adequate bonding ofthe vapour control layer to the deck so as to provide asuitable surface onto which the Kingspan ThermataperTT40 zero ODP is to be laid and to provide a sufficientresistance to wind up–lift (see ‘Wind Loading’ page 9).

TYPICAL U–VALUES

Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP can easilymeet all U–values required for compliance withBuilding Regulations/Standards revised after the year2000. A detailed U–value calculation together withcondensation risk analysis should be completed foreach individual project. Please call our TechnicalServices Department for assistance (see rear cover).

SITEWORK

LAYING PATTERNThe Kingspan Insulation working drawings willindicate the area of the roof to be covered, theminimum insulation level, fall direction and pitch of thetapered system. The location of each board type willbe indicated clearly on the drawing and each packwill contain one board type only.

Ridges, hips and valleys will be marked on thedrawings, together with the setting out, commencementpoints for laying of the boards. The flat packer boardsused to raise the height of the tapered system shouldbe laid so that where possible they are staggeredwith respect to the tapered boards on top. The packerboards should preferably be bonded in hot bitumen(or see ‘Mechanical Fixings’).

FIXING OVER METAL DECKSOn metal decks Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zeroODP should be laid into hot bitumen (max.temperature 240°C) mopped or poured over thevapour control layer which has been bonded to thedeck crowns. Alternatively the boards can be securedusing mechanical fixing systems. The KingspanThermataper TT40 zero ODP boards should belaid break–bonded with all joints lightly butted, andwith their long edges at right angles to the troughopenings, or alternatively, diagonally across thecorrugation line. Whichever system is chosen, caremust be taken to ensure that all joints are supportedby the deck. Taping of the joints is not required.

SPECIFICATION CLAUSE

Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP should bedescribed in specifications as:–

The roof insulation shall be Kingspan ThermataperTT40 zero ODP ____mm thick comprising aCFC/HCFC–free rigid urethane core with bitumenimpregnated glass fibre tissue facings on both sidesmanufactured to BS EN ISO 9002: 1994 byKingspan Insulation Limited and shall be applied inaccordance with the instructions issued by them.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP is taperedinsulation designed for use under partially bondedbuilt–up felt roofing systems.

ROOF WATERPROOFINGKingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP is suitablefor use with most bitumen based waterproofingsystems including high performance types whichincorporate and are compatible with a Type 3Gperforated base layer to BS 747: 2000(Specification for Roofing Felts). The 3G felt layer islaid dry and loose, mineral face down. The roofwaterproofing should be applied as soon as possibleafter the laying of the boards. The built–up roofspecification should be laid where applicable inaccordance with BS 8217: 1994 (Code of practicefor built–up felt roofing). Certain approved single plymembranes are also compatible.

Please Note: Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zeroODP is unsuitable for use with mastic asphaltwaterproofing.10

FIXING OVER CONCRETE DECKSConcrete decks should be clean, dry, without largeprojections, steps or gaps. To ensure an adequatebond between the vapour control layer and theconcrete deck, the concrete or screeded surfaceshould be suitably primed, in accordance with thespecified manufacturer’s instructions. The vapourcontrol layer should be fully bonded to the deck andsimilarly the Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zeroODP to the vapour control layer by laying into hotbitumen mopped or poured over the vapour controllayer. Alternatively the boards can be secured usingmechanical fixing systems. The boards should be laidbreak–bonded with all joints lightly butted.

FIXING OVER PLYWOOD DECKSThe Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP shouldbe fully bedded in hot bitumen over a continuousvapour control layer which has been nailed or fullybonded to the deck with laps at the side and endssealed with hot bitumen. Alternatively the boards canbe secured using mechanical fixing systems. The jointsshould be break–bonded and the boards laid at rightangles to the edge of the roof or diagonally acrossthe roof. All joints should be lightly butted.

FIXING OVER TONGUE & GROOVE DECKSOn timber tongue and groove decks, the vapourcontrol layer should be nailed. During the laying ofthe Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP, thenail heads will become sealed in hot bitumen to thevapour control layer by the subsequent bonding of theroof boards. The Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zeroODP system is then applied as described underplywood decks.

MECHANICAL FIXINGSThe number of mechanical fixings required to fix theKingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP boards willvary with the geographical location of the building,the topographical data and the height and width ofthe roof concerned.

Each fixing should incorporate a square or circularplate washer (70 mm x 70 mm or 75 mm diameter).

A minimum 5 No. fixings should be placed within theindividual board area and be sited >50 mm and<150 mm from the edges and corners of the boardgiving a minimum fixing rate of 3.47 fixings persquare metre (1200 x 1200 mm boards). Packerboards (if required) should be secured using a singlefixing prior to the overlay of the KingspanThermataper zero ODP System.

DAILY WORKING PRACTICEAt the completion of each day’s work, or wheneverwork is interrupted, a night joint must be made inorder to prevent water penetration of the roofconstruction.

CUTTINGCutting should be carried out using a fine toothedsaw or by scoring with a knife and snapping theboard over a straight edge and cutting the facing onthe other side. Ensure accurate trimming to achieveclose butting joints and continuity of insulation.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP is thetapered version of Kingspan Thermaroof TR20 zeroODP.

THE FACINGSKingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODP is faced onboth sides with bitumen impregnated glass fibre tissueautohesively bonded to the insulation core duringmanufacture.

THE COREThe core of Kingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODPis a high performance CFC/HCFC–free rigidurethane insulant of typical density 32 kg/m3.

CFC/HCFC–FREEKingspan Thermataper TT40 zero ODPis manufactured without the use of CFCs/HCFCs and has zero Ozone DepletionPotential (ODP).

FIRE PERFORMANCEFlat roofs insulated with Kingspan ThermataperTT40 zero ODP when subjected to British Standardfire tests achieve the following typical results, whenwaterproofed with 3 layer built–up felt and a loadingcoat of 10 mm chippings. For specifications withoutthe chippings please consult the manufacturer of themineral surfaced cap sheet for their fire classificationdetails.

THERMAL PROPERTIES

The l–values and R–values quoted are inaccordance with the Harmonised European

SPECIFICATION CLAUSE

The roof insulation shall be Kingspan ThermataperTT42 zero ODP comprising ____mm thick CFC/HCFC–free rigid urethane and 20 mm thick cork facingautohesively bonded to the insulation core with armatureduring manufacture to BS EN ISO 9002: 1994 byKingspan Insulation Limited and shall be applied inaccordance with the instructions issued by them.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP is taperedinsulation designed for use under fully bondedbuilt–up felt and mastic asphalt roofing systems.

The board allows full bonding of the waterproofinglayer to the cork surface, providing maximumresistance to uplift.

ROOF WATERPROOFINGKingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP is designedfor use with most bitumen based waterproofing systems,including high performance types which incorporate2 layer fully bonded felts. It is also suited to masticasphalt waterproofing systems. The roof waterproofingshould be applied as soon as possible after the laying ofthe boards. The built–up roof specification should be laidwhere applicable in accordance with BS 8217: 1994(Code of practice for built–up felt roofing) and BS 8218:1998 (Code of practice for mastic asphalt roofing).Mastic asphalt should always be laid over an isolatinglayer of Type 4A sheathing felt to BS 747: 2000(Specification for Roofing Felts).

Certain approved single ply membranes are alsocompatible.

WATER VAPOUR CONTROLThe need for a separate vapour control layer withKingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP in a warmroof construction should be assessed in accordance withBS 5250: 1989 (1995) and as defined in BS 6299:1982. A minimum vapour control layer should consist of acoated roofing felt complying with BS 747: 2000 Type3B, or any appropriate metal–cored vapour control layer.

Allowance should be made for the adequate bondingof the vapour control layer to the deck so as toprovide a suitable surface onto which the KingspanThermataper TT42 zero ODP is to be laid and toprovide a sufficient resistance to wind up–lift (see‘Wind Loading’ page 9).

Metal decks and concrete decks should be primedprior to the application of the hot bitumen used tobond the vapour control layer to the deck.

To provide an effective vapour control layer, theroofing felt should be bonded in hot bitumen to thesupporting substrate with all joints lapped at least50 mm and bonded. At all edges, abutments andpenetrations the felt should be either turned back atleast 150 mm onto the insulation and sealed down orturned up and sealed with the roof covering to forman envelope. This will be dependant upon whetherbuilt up felt or mastic asphalt. Reference should bemade to BS 8217: 1994 (Code of practice forbuilt–up felt roofing) and/or the Mastic AsphaltCouncil Roofing Handbook. Where verges/eavesdetails exist, the vapour control layer should bedressed accordingly to a minimum of 150 mm.

Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP can easilymeet all U–values required for compliance withBuilding Regulations/Standards revised after the year2000. MECHANICAL FIXINGSThe number of mechanical fixings required to fix theKingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP boards willvary with the geographical location of the building,the topographical data and the height and width ofthe roof concerned.

Each fixing should incorporate a square or circularplate washer (70 mm x 70 mm or 75 mm diameter).

A minimum 4 No. fixings should be placed within theindividual board area and be sited >50 mm and<150 mm from the edges and corners of the boardgiving a minimum fixing rate of 5.55 fixings persquare metre (1200 x 600 mm boards). Packerboards (if required) should be secured using a singlefixing prior to the overlay of the KingspanThermataper zero ODP System.

The requirement for additional fixings should beassessed in accordance with BS 6399: Part 2: 1997(Code of practice for wind loads).

DAILY WORKING PRACTICEAt the completion of each day’s work, or whenever workis interrupted, a night joint must be made in order toprevent water penetration of the roof construction.

CUTTINGKingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP can be cuteasily and cleanly using a fine toothed saw or a sharpknife, to fit roof openings and fixtures. Do not attempt tosnap the board. Ensure accurate trimming to achieveclose butting joints and continuity of insulation.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONKingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP is thetapered version of Kingspan Thermaroof TR22 zeroODP.

THE UPPER FACINGThe upper facing of Kingspan Thermataper TT42zero ODP is an autohesively bonded cork roofboardof typical density 120 kg/m3, manufactured frompure Portuguese granulated cork, compressed, steambaked and held together by the natural cork gum.

THE COREThe core of Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODPis a high performance CFC/HCFC–free rigidurethane insulant of typical density 32 kg/m3, whichincorporates a patented glass tissue armature.

THE LOWER FACINGThe lower facing of Kingspan Thermataper TT42zero ODP is a glass reinforced perforated cellulosewhich is compatible with most forms of bitumen bonding.

CFC/HCFC–FREEKingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODPis manufactured without the use of CFCs/HCFCs and has zero Ozone DepletionPotential (ODP).

Ridges, hips and valleys will be marked on thedrawings, together with the setting out, commencementpoints for laying of the boards. The flat packer boardsused to raise the height of the tapered system shouldbe laid so that where possible they are staggeredwith respect to the tapered boards on top. The packerboards should preferably be bonded in hot bitumen(or see ‘Mechanical Fixing’).

FIXING OVER METAL DECKSOn metal decks Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zeroODP should be laid into hot bitumen (max.temperature 240°C) mopped or poured over thevapour control layer which has been bonded to thedeck crowns. Alternatively the boards can be securedusing mechanical fixing systems. The KingspanThermataper TT42 zero ODP boards should belaid break–bonded with all joints lightly butted, andwith their long edges at right angles to the troughopenings, or alternatively, diagonally across thecorrugation line. Whichever system is chosen, caremust be taken to ensure that all joints are supportedby the deck. Taping of the joints is not required.

FIXING OVER CONCRETE DECKSConcrete decks should be clean, dry, without largeprojections, steps or gaps. To ensure an adequatebond between the vapour control layer and theconcrete deck, the concrete or screeded surfaceshould be suitably primed, in accordance with thespecified manufacturer’s instructions. The vapourcontrol layer should be fully bonded to the deck andsimilarly the Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zeroODP to the vapour control layer by laying into hotbitumen mopped or poured over the vapour controllayer. Alternatively the boards can be secured usingmechanical fixing systems. The boards should be laidbreak–bonded with all joints lightly butted.

FIXING OVER PLYWOOD DECKSThe Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP shouldbe fully bedded in hot bitumen over a continuousvapour control layer which has been nailed or fullybonded to the deck with laps at the side and endssealed with hot bitumen. Alternatively the boards canbe secured using mechanical fixing systems. The jointsshould be break–bonded and the boards laid at rightangles to the edge of the roof or diagonally acrossthe roof. All joints should be lightly butted.

FIXING OVER TONGUE & GROOVE DECKSOn timber tongue and groove decks, the vapourcontrol layer should be nailed. During the laying ofthe Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zero ODP, thenail heads will become sealed in hot bitumen to thevapour control layer by the subsequent bonding of theroof boards. The Kingspan Thermataper TT42 zeroODP system is then applied as described underplywood decks.

Warm roofs aredescribed in greater detail in BS 6229: 1982 (Codeof practice for flat roofs with continuously supportedcoverings). A minimum vapour control layer shouldconsist of a 1000 gauge polythene membrane.

The specified vapour control layer should have aminimum 150 mm side and end laps which should beadequately sealed. The membrane should also be turnedup, but not sealed, to all vertical surfaces which abut theroof, to a minimum height of 250 mm and shouldoverhang the verge or gutter by the same amount.Before applying the roof finish, the projecting 250 mmof the vapour control layer should be turned over theinsulation and sealed down to form an envelope.

FIXING OVER CONCRETE DECKSConcrete decks should be clean, dry, without largeprojections, steps or gaps. The boards are normallylaid over the vapour control layer and all securedusing mechanical fixings and washers. The boardsshould be laid break–bonded with all joints lightlybutted. The boards can also be restrained through theuse of ballast.

FIXING OVER TIMBER DECKSTimber decks should be clean and free of largeprojections, steps or gaps. On timber decks,Kingspan Thermataper TT46 zero ODP should belaid over a vapour control layer, the side ends andlaps of which have been sealed. The board arenormally secured using mechanical fixing systems andwashers. The boards should be laid break–bondedwith all joints lightly butted.

MECHANICAL FIXINGSThe number of mechanical fixings required to fix theKingspan Thermataper TT46 zero ODP boards willvary with the geographical location of the building,the topographical data and the height and width ofthe roof concerned. Each fixing should incorporate asquare or circular washer (70 mm x 70 mm or75 mm diameter). The requirements for securing thewaterproofing membrane should be consideredseparately.

A minimum 5 No. fixings should be placed within theindividual board area and be sited >50 mm and<150 mm from the edges and corners of the boardand be placed within the individual board areagiving a minimum fixing rate of 3.47 fixings persquare metre (1200 x 1200 mm boards). Packerboards (if required) should be secured using a singlefixing prior to the overlay of the KingspanThermataper TT46 zero ODP system.

The requirement for additional fixings should beassessed in accordance with BS 6399: Part 2: 1997(Code of practice for wind loads).

Where alternative mechanical fixing systems that notrely on large washers are specified, such as barfixing systems, the specified system must give similarrestraint to the board as would be attained by the useof conventional washer and washer systems.

The roof insulation shall be Kingspan ThermataperTT47 zero ODP ____mm thick comprising aCFC/HCFC–free rigid urethane core with wet laycoated glass fibre facings on both sides manufacturedto BS EN ISO 9002: 1994 by Kingspan InsulationLimited and shall be applied in accordance with theinstructions issued by them.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODP is taperedinsulation designed for use under fully adheredsingle–ply waterproofing using solvent basedadhesives.

ROOF WATERPROOFINGKingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODP is suitablefor use with most fully adhered single–plywaterproofing membranes.

WATER VAPOUR CONTROLThe need for a separate vapour control layer withKingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODP in a warmroof construction may be assessed in accordance withBS 5250: 1989 (1995) (Code of practice for controlof condensation in buildings). Warm roofs aredescribed in greater detail in BS 6229: 1982 (Codeof practice for flat roofs with continuously supportedcoverings). A minimum vapour control layer shouldconsist of a 1000 gauge polythene membrane.

The specified vapour control layer should have aminimum 150 mm side and end laps which should beadequately sealed. The membrane should also beturned up, but not sealed, to all vertical surfaceswhich abut the roof, to a minimum height of 250 mmand should overhang the verge or gutter by the sameamount. Before applying the roof finish, the projecting250 mm of the vapour control layer should be turnedover the insulation and sealed down to form anenvelope.

TYPICAL U–VALUES

Can easily meet all U–values required for compliancewith Building Regulations/Standards revised after theyear 2000. A detailed U–value calculation togetherwith condensation risk analysis should be completedfor each individual project. Please call our TechnicalServices Department for assistance (see rear cover).

SITEWORK

LAYING PATTERNThe Kingspan Insulation working drawings willindicate the area of the roof to be covered, theminimum insulation level, fall direction and pitch of thetapered system. The location of each board type willbe indicated clearly on the drawing and each packwill contain one board type only.

Ridges, hips and valleys will be marked on thedrawings, together with the setting out, commencementpoints for laying of the boards. The flat packer boardsused to raise the height of the tapered system shouldbe laid so that where possible they are staggeredwith respect to the tapered boards on top. The packerboards should preferably be bonded in hot bitumen(or see ‘Mechanical Fixing’).

FIXING OVER METAL DECKSOn metal decks Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zeroODP should be laid into hot bitumen (max.temperature 240°C) mopped or poured over thevapour control layer which has been bonded to thedeck crowns. Alternatively the boards can be securedusing mechanical fixing systems. The KingspanThermataper TT47 zero ODP boards should belaid break–bonded with all joints lightly butted, andwith their long edges at right angles to the troughopenings, or alternatively, diagonally across thecorrugation line. Whichever system is chosen, caremust be taken to ensure that all joints are supportedby the deck. Taping of the joints is not required.

FIXING OVER CONCRETE DECKSConcrete decks should be clean, dry, without largeprojections, steps or gaps. To ensure an adequatebond between the vapour control layer and theconcrete deck, the concrete or screeded surfaceshould be suitably primed, in accordance with thespecified manufacturer’s instructions. The vapourcontrol layer should be fully bonded to the deck andsimilarly the Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zeroODP to the vapour control layer by laying into hotbitumen mopped or poured over the vapour controllayer. Alternatively the boards can be secured usingmechanical fixing systems. The boards should be laidbreak–bonded with all joints lightly butted.

FIXING OVER PLYWOOD DECKSThe Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODP shouldbe fully bedded in hot bitumen over a continuousvapour control layer which has been nailed or fullybonded to the deck with laps at the side and endssealed with hot bitumen. Alternatively the boards canbe secured using mechanical fixing systems. The jointsshould be break–bonded and the boards laid at rightangles to the edge of the roof or diagonally acrossthe roof. All joints should be lightly butted.

FIXING OVER TONGUE & GROOVE DECKSOn timber tongue and groove decks, the vapourcontrol layer should be nailed. During the laying ofthe Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODP, thenail heads will become sealed in hot bitumen to thevapour control layer by the subsequent bonding of theroof boards. The Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zeroODP system is then applied as described underplywood decks.

MECHANICAL FIXINGSThe number of mechanical fixings required to fix theKingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODP boards willvary with the geographical location of the building,the topographical data and the height and width ofthe roof concerned.

Each fixing should incorporate a square or circularplate washer (70 mm x 70 mm or 75 mm diameter).

A minimum 5 No. fixings should be placed within theindividual board area and be sited >50 mm and<150 mm from the edges and corners of the boardgiving a minimum fixing rate of 3.47 fixings persquare metre (1200 x 1200 mm boards). Packerboards (if required) should be secured using a singlefixing prior to the overlay of the KingspanThermataper zero ODP System.

DAILY WORKING PRACTICEAt the completion of each day’s work, or wheneverwork is interrupted, a night joint must be made inorder to prevent water penetration of the roofconstruction.

CUTTINGCutting should be carried out using a fine toothedsaw or by scoring with a knife and snapping theboard over a straight edge and cutting the facing onthe other side. Ensure accurate trimming to achieveclose butting joints and continuity of insulation.

THE FACINGSKingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODP is faced onboth sides with a wet lay coated glass fibre tissueautohesively bonded to the insulation core duringmanufacture.

THE COREThe core of Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODPis a high performance CFC/HCFC–free rigidurethane insulant of typical density 32 kg/m3.

CFC/HCFC–FREE Kingspan Thermataper TT47 zero ODPis manufactured without the use of CFCs/HCFCs and has zero Ozone DepletionPotential (ODP).

DURABILITYIf correctly applied, Kingspan Thermataper TT47zero ODP has an indefinite life. Its durability dependson the supporting structure, waterproofing and theconditions of its use.

FIRE PERFORMANCEWhen subjected to British Standard fire tests theresults are dependent on the roofing system adopted,however FAB is generally achieved.

be appropriate unless the same procedures havebeen followed.

USEKingspan Thermacricket Systems (i.e. backfallsystems) are available in the full range and can beinstalled to provide effective and economicaldrainage of localised roof areas. When correctlyapplied, Kingspan Thermacricket Systems willimprove existing crossfalls or may be designed into anew construction in place of secret valley gutters.

SITEWORK

FIXINGKingspan Thermacricket Systems can bemechanically fixed or bedded in a layer of hotbitumen applied direct to the existing roof, or to thevapour control layer and between layers in the system.

Kingspan Thermacricket Systems have to be cut onsite by the contractor. The boards are easy to cut andshape using a panel saw.
