Recipe for a Happy New Year

Take 12 fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly cleansed from all old memories of bitterness, hate, and jealousy.

Cut these months into 30 or 31 equal parts.

(This batch will keep for one year. Do not attempt to make more than one batch at a time

-many people spoil the entire lot in this way.)

Prepare one day at a time as follows: Into each day, put 12 parts of faith,

11 parts of patience, 10 parts of courage,

9 parts of work (some people omit this ingredient and spoil the flavor of the rest),

8 parts of hope, 7 parts of fidelity,

6 parts of open-mindedness, 5 parts of kindness,

4 parts of rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad, "don't do it") ,

3 parts of prayer, 2 parts of meditation,

and 1 well-selected resolution.

If you have no conscientious scruples, add a teaspoonful of good spirits,

a dash of fun, a pinch of folly,

a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor.

Pour love liberally into the whole,

and mix with strength. Cook thoroughly in a warming heat.

Garnish with a few smiles and a sprig of joy; then serve with quietness,

unselfishness, and cheerfulness.

A Happy New Year is a certainty. -anonymous

The Story of Baby Jesus

A long time ago, in the town of Nazareth, lived a young woman named Mary, who did her chores, was kind to others, and loved God very much. She was engaged to be married to Joseph, who was a carpenter. One day, an Angel suddenly ap-peared. Before Mary could say anything, the Angel told Mary that she was favored by God, and that God was with her.

Mary was surprised; and tried not to be afraid, but she had never seen an angel before. After all, Mary was just a regular lady like you or I. Why was this Angel visiting her? What did the Angel want? The angel quickly tried to reassure Mary, "Do not be afraid!" "God has found favor with you. You will have a baby boy, and are to give him the name Jesus." Mary couldn't believe what she was hearing, she didn't know what to say. When she was finally able to speak, she said, "I am the Lord's servant, and I hope everything you have said will come true."

Soon after, Joseph found out that Mary was going to have a baby. Joseph was confused and upset by this. But an angel came to him in a dream and said, Joseph do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The child Mary is going to have is God's Son, and you are to give him the name Jesus." When Joseph woke up, he remembered what the angel had said. He knew that everything was okay, and he wasn't upset anymore. In those days, the government decided that they should count everyone that lived in that area of the world. So Joseph had to take Mary to his town, Bethlehem to register.

It took Mary and Joseph a long time to get to Bethlehem. This was very tiring for Mary because she was soon going to have a baby. When they reached the town, all the hotels were full and there was nowhere that they could stay. Finally, someone felt bad for them, and offered them a place to stay. Mary and Joseph were thankful that they at least had a place to lay down. It was warm, and there was plenty of straw to lay on. That night an exciting, wonderful thing happened. Mary and Joseph had a baby! But it wasn't just any baby, it was Baby Je-sus! The creator of the whole world, the King of Kings, the one who would save the world. The little baby boy fell asleep in Mary's arms and she wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a manger on some clean straw. Mary and Joseph soon fell asleep,

Trivia Question for February

According to Solomon, How is a fool’s voice known?

The World

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

-1 John 2:15

John taught us clearly what he meant by “the world.” He wrote, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” (V. 16) The world is the disposition or

power under which man has fallen through sin. And the god of this world, in or-der to deceive man, conceals himself under the form of what God has created. The world, with its pleasures, surrounds the Christian each day with temptations.

This was the case with Eve in the Garden of Eden. In Genesis 3:6, we find the three characteristics that John mentioned: first, the lust of the flesh: “The woman saw that the tree was good for food”; second, the lust of the eyes: “It was pleas-ant to the eyes”; and third, the pride of life: “A tree to be desired to make one wise.” The world still comes to us, offering desirable food and much to please the fleshly appetites. It offers much that the eye desires, including riches, beau-ty, and luxury. And it offers the pride of life, which is shown when a man imagi-nes he knows and understands everything, and prides himself on it.

Are our lives in the world not full of danger, with the allurements of the flesh, so much to occupy our eyes and our hearts, and so much worldly wisdom and knowledge?

John told us, “Do not love the world, for then the love of the Father is not in you.” Our Lord calls us, as He called His disciples, to leave all and follow Him.

Christians, you live in a dangerous world; cling to the Lord Jesus. As He teach-es you to shun the world and its attractions, your love will go out to Him in loyal-hearted service. But remember, there must be daily fellowship with Jesus. His love alone can expel the love of the world. Take time to be alone with your Lord.

How to start the New Year Off Right We are starting a New Year so here are some tips to help it get off to a good start. Let’s try these: 1. Get your full eight hours—this is needed for good health,

safety, and optimum performance. 2. Rise and shine - and eat— Breakfast gets your body’s

metabolism going again after a night of sleeping, and give you the gradual and adequate energy you need to get through the morning.

3. Wash your hands - from banishing cold and flu germs to preventing food borne illnesses, frequent hand-washing is one of the smartest preventive habits you can adopt.

4. Know your family health history - this can give you important information regarding your own health.

5. Eat mindfully - turn off the TV or computer, sit down at a table with your food on a plate, and focus on eating.

6. Add variety to your diet - wild salmon and sardines are a couple of fish that provide heart-healthy facts—find more foods that help your diet and health.

7. Volunteer - in addition to helping others, you benefit by gain-ing valuable experience and meeting new friends.

8. Maintain strong family and social networks - you become healthier and are less likely to experience depression.

9. Take a time out - at least once a day, close your eyes and focus on taking 10 deep full breaths.

10. Drink more water to prevent constipation, dehydration and other related diseases.

“Christmas In July” Many have lamented that they found it dif-ficult to get in the Christmas Spirit, due to the unseasonably warm temperatures. On December 19th, a few of us ventured to Child’s Park YMCA to assist in the dis-tribution of toys to needy families.

When we arrived, we were immediately impressed by the organization of the event. We began humming along with

the holiday music. Employees and other volunteers greeted us with “Merry Christmas!” Everyone appeared to be in a good mood.

Tampa Bay Buccaneer, Louis Murphy, Jr., extended greet-ings and availed himself to “selfies” and other photos with the parents. Sadly, Sister Searcy was not able to get a photo with our hometown Buccaneer.

After three hours in this environment, we left the Center with a sense of accomplishment and it felt a lot like Christmas (minus the temperature).

A huge thank you goes out to: First Lady Andrea Williams, Sisters Janis Smith, Naomi Adams, Eva W. Williams, Bertha Searcy and Felicia Pizano for their time and assistance.
