The YAFTA Film & Television Production Diploma course is a one year, part time, blended learning course. The diploma has been designed for those with little or no experience of film & TV production, who wish to develop the technical skills required to produce content for film & television. This intensive training course will equip students with the necessary technical knowledge and skills to start gaining work experience in the industry.

This is the first course of its kind to be run in the North of the UK and offers the potential for those who wish to pursue a career in film & television production, the opportunity to do so.

Unlike traditional University or college courses, YAFTA’s diploma focuses technical, practical, circumstantial and realistic aspects of working in the film and TV industry. This understanding and appreciation of the industry, in addition to excellent technical ability for their chosen role in production, is vital if students are going to go on to have a successful career.

COURSE OBJECTIVEThe main objective of the YAFTA Film & TV Production Diploma is to give students an overall understanding of film & TV production, teaching students about the different roles that they can undertake in production and giving them the opportunity to undertake these roles for themselves. We aim to produce students who not only possess excellent technical ability but that also have a clear understanding of the realities of working in the film & TV industry.

COURSE AIMSYAFTA’s Film & TV Production Diploma course aims to equip students with the practical and technical knowledge and skills to work in Film & TV production, as well as teaching students about the routes into the industry and how to start gaining work. The course is delivered by an impressive team of teaching talent who are all currently working in film and TV production, on the biggest and best known productions in the U.K. This ensures that students are learning from top industry professionals throughout their diploma programme education at YAFTA. Furthermore, the course offers an excellent opportunity to network with those who are currently working in the industry.

TIME COMMITMENT

The course is a blended learning programme which has been carefully structured to fit around other full time commitments such as work, education or family. Students are required to attend for one full day a week which is usually on a weekend, this day will be the same every week but will vary depending on which cohort you join. In addition to your contact hours, you will have work to undertake at home which will be set by your tutors each week. There will be a practical element to the course where you will work with YAFTA Actors to practice the technical aspects of film and television production and to gain realistic experience of working with on screen talent. Your final piece of coursework will be the creation and production of a short film which will be screened at the YAFTA End of Year Showcase to a host of industry professionals.education at YAFTA. Furthermore, the course offers an excellent opportunity to network with those who are currently working in the industry.

required for at least 3

full days per month

8 x hours independent study will be required for preparation

and homework tasks.

Additional time for practical, on-set, experience will be required on a weekend throughout the course, this will be in addition to

your contact hours.

A Pre-Production Folder should contain: Production proposal Production schedules Scripts Storyboards Location recces Logistics and risk assessments Casting of actors with contact details Talent Release Forms Legal and Ethical issues (including ASA, OFCOM and Clearcast) Crew List Call Sheets Equipment list

LEARNING AIM CProduce a DVD and Production Diary for your TV Commercial, Short Film or Corporate Video

To pass you must evidence the following

Camera Techniques including framing, a range of shot types and movement. Use of lighting Camera Logs, logging scenes, takes and information Recording and sourcing of royalty free audio, music, sound effects, voiceovers Photographs of your filming days showing cast, crew, locations and equipment. An explanation of your roles during filming days

LEARNING AIM DApply post-production techniques to your TV Commercial, Short Film or Corporate Video

To pass your DVD must evidence the following

Basic Video Editing skills including use of transitions to form narrative, e.g. cuts, fades, dissolves and continuity

Syncing sound Use of music or sound effects Use of titles / graphics Use of effects

To pass you must discuss the following

Is the product the required length? Are the quality standards that of Television? Is the product fit for purpose? Strengths of the finished piece Areas for improvement

ADDITIONAL LECTURESIn addition to the core learning aims of the course, students will undertake modules on the following:

Script Supervision Script Writing The roles of 1 st , 2 nd & 3 rd Assistant Directors The role of the Director in the pre-production, production and post-production process.

The roles of the entire crew and how they fit into the production team. Working with actors from casting stage through to direction. Working as a freelancer including; time management, budgeting and self assessment & tax.

How to start gaining work and to keep gaining work. The power of networking and perception in the film & TV industry.
