Our Mission: To create prosperity by strengthening the competitiveness of U.S. industry, promoting trade and investment, and ensuring fair trade and compliance with trade laws and agreements.
The International Trade Administration (ITA) is comprised of four units that work together to accomplish its mission:
Trade Promotion and U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service Market Access and Compliance Manufacturing and Services Import Administration
Who We Are
Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Export Initiative (RE4I)
Trade Promotion Coordinating Committee Working Group on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency
Secretary Locke announced the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Export Initiative December 9, 2010
23 Commitments from Across the U.S. Government for New Programs, Actions, or Deliverables to Boost RE&EE Exports:
Tailored financing for the specific needs of U.S. RE&EE exporters
Enhanced market access for U.S. RE&EE technologies
Increased trade promotion to better link buyers and sellers of U.S. RE&EE technologies
More efficient export promotion services for current and future U.S. RE&EE companies
Responding to the National Export Initiative, the RE4I is the country’s first-ever federally-coordinated effort to increase renewable energy and energy efficiency exports.

Action Plan Recommendations
1. Recognize energy efficiency as a high-priority energy resource.
2. Make strong, long-term commitment to implement cost effective energy efficiency as a resource.
3. Broadly communicate the benefits of and opportunities for energy efficiency.
4. Promote sufficient, timely, and stable program funding to deliver energy efficiency where cost-effective.
5. Modify policies to align utility incentives with the delivery of cost-effective energy efficiency and modify ratemaking practices to promote energy efficiency investments.

GREENBUILDINGMajor present conditions & future predictions
• In the US 70% of all electricity is used for building conditioning & equipment• Best building design engineering construction and operational practices
demonstrate the feasibility of operating buildings at 1/10th of the energy required by average US practices with higher IEQ
• Net zero energy buildings for the majority of the building stock, including low to medium size housing and commercial buildings are feasible now, when economic externalities in the cost of energy are included
• Retrofitting existing buildings, it has been demonstrated, will save more than 2/3 thirds of the energy needed for operating them, while increasing thermal comfort, visual, air, and acoustic quality (IEQ)
Source: Turner, C., Frankel, M., 2008, Energy performance of LEED for New Construction buildings, Prepared for USGBC,
In a newly released report by the New Buildings Institute, 30% of LEED buildings perform better than the simulated level, 25% perform worse than expected, and some have serious energy consumption problems during post-occupancy (Turner et al., 2008).
Worldwide US Green Building Export Initiative
The U.S. Departments of State and Commerce joint initiative of League of Green Embassies and Green Build USA under the National Export Initiative.
The League of Green Embassies is a voluntary association of over fifty embassies and consulates that work together to promote energy efficiency at embassy facilities.
Green Build USA is a Department of Commerce program that promotes the export of
U.S.-sourced green building products and promotes the use of these products by hosting embassy commercial events.
The joint program offers an unprecedented opportunity to:
U.S. private sector companies working in the clean energy, green building sectors to expand exports directly or by placing product or services into U.S. embassies.
Embassies are ideal venues to:
Showcase U.S. leadership by highlighting U.S. products, services and technologies that address today’s environmental challenges;
Enable US companies to sell “over the fence” into local markets. page 1 of 2
Three key goals of the League of Green Embassies Program are:
1. to advance the presidential mandate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in USG buildings;
2. demonstrate the capabilities of U.S. products and technologies to the world market
3. increase the exports of U.S. products and services in line with the National Export Initiative.
Replacing electric water heaters with solar heaters to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
SOL Inc. entered into a partnership with the US Embassy in January 2011 to provide solar lighting systems in an effort to assist the Embassy’s efforts to achieve energy efficiency goals set by President Obama.
The U.S. Embassy Helsinki gets the first installation of WindStream Technologies’ TurboMill, with personal oversight from company CEO Dan Bates.

Sustainable Embassy Building Program
OBO seeks to minimize the impacts of our overseas facilities by designing, constructing, operating, and demolishing our buildings in an energy-efficient and environmentally sensitive manner
We also strive to create platforms for eco-diplomacy by greening our US embassies and consulates worldwide.

• This solar project started as a façade repair
• Initial construction cost was $1.7 M. with payback in 10 years.
• Solar Designs Associates was the contractor, who designed a similar system for the White House.
• The first MagLev Chiller in Europe was installed here on Earth Day 2009.
