Message From the Principals,
Hey, it’s part of the job! When I reflect back and won-
der about all of the “odd” things we get to do while in education,
it’s all worth it! Even though it is a new year, we continue to strive
forward on all of our goals we have been working on. Teachers
are busily readying students for mid-terms, specialists are work-
ing with students for that little extra help, and counselors are
keeping their student programs strong. January has traditionally
been a month of cold weather, so please make sure your stu-
dents are wearing warm clothing. Our after school study and
club 240 programs are still available for students. If you need
more information on these great programs please contact the of-
fice. January 22nd marks the end of the 1st semester, and report
cards are sent or emailed home on January 27th. The semester
grade (S1), is the final grade. Quarter 1 (42.5%) plus Quarter 2
(42.5%) plus the semester exam (E1, 15%) are calculated to de-
termine this grade. This is why it is so important that students do
well both quarters. Hope you are all doing well and remember,
Woodland Middle School Believes in You!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Between January 6th and 17th, elementary and middle schools throughout the Coeur d’Alene School District will be hosting their schoolwide spelling bees. Stu-dents in grades 03-08 will be asked to participate in this highly engaging competi-tion to recognize the best spellers in our district.
Please understand that this competition is not mandatory. This is a choice that a student, along with their families, should make. This competition will require de-termination, concentration, and memorization. However, if successful through the school and district Bees, your student will move to our North Idaho Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene Press at which they can win prizes and possibly represent our region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washing-ton, D.C.! This year, we are also pleased to offer our second ever 3rd grade Spelling Bee which will provide our younger students an opportunity to demonstrate their spelling skills, although there is no regional competition for those students.
If interested, please contact your student’s teacher for the official practice list. We encourage your child or children to study the words in preparation for their school Spelling Bee. Winter Break can be an excellent time to study and this is a great opportunity for each student to improve their spelling and have fun! Students will need to declare their interest in participating shortly with their teachers.
We hope that you might discuss this opportunity with your students.

On December 18th the GLO students went over to the Re-
naissance Retirement center and spread holiday joy by
singing some of their favorite Christmas songs. The resi-
dents enjoyed the singing so much that most joined in
the fun. This has become an annual tradition for our
leadership students.
Just some of the great things that are happening at our
school!

Quick and healthy snack ideas for your child
Our bodies are like well-made machines; they need fuel to run. Children have smaller “fuel tanks” because their
bodies and stomachs are smaller. Because of this fact, they need to fuel up more often. Snacks are an important
part of your child’s day. By keeping their energy levels up and staving off those hunger pains, research has shown
that they will be better learners in the classroom. Just like choosing a higher grade fuel for your car can improve
its performance, choosing healthier, nutrient dense foods will make your child’s body run better too! Great snacks
in a quick pinch are whole grain crackers or cereals, string or sliced cheese, pre-packaged fruit cups, yogurt and
granola bars. You can get creative at home if you have a little more time. Fruit and yogurt smoothies, frozen
grapes or pineapple tidbits, and mini bagel pizzas are just a few great ideas. As always, see our great nutrition
links on our website at www.cdaschools.org .
