I’ve BeenThinking...Rob Lidz, Co-Editor

I've been thinking about what makes Delaire Country Club tick. Beyond our very capable professional staff, it is clearly the level of volunteerism that keeps us moving forward. While it is easy to criticize, I strongly

recommend participating first. Whether for the Board of Governors or the Property Owners Association, important needs are fresh ideas from members who have yet to join a committee or simply indicate a desire to get involved. Of course, those who have contributed in the past and will continue to do so should be applauded as well. There is so much to do and ample time to do it. It just takes more of us to contribute our thoughts and time.

I've just been thinking the way forward starts with "us"!

Remembering movies and music written years ago - Alan and I always think of our favorites.....

"Tomorrow is Forever" .....Love from years ago brought memories of love shared together to remain 'forever'....

"Pretty Woman"......Just showing that together you can make it happen and be happy 'forever'......

"Dancing Queen"....The music showed how love could be found - working through life's challenges and find love 'forever'.... Each of these remind me of how fortunate we are to enjoy life "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" and make our dreams come true - right here at Delaire - "forever"! Enjoying our incredible fun times - every day - in our wonderful small and caring "Delaire Family World" that is filled with love and friendships - with new friends that we met here at Delaire - old friends we knew before and joined Delaire because they saw the fun times we enjoyed - and all of us 'together' look forward to making and sharing our new memories that we know will remain in our hearts 'forever'....

We are the lucky ones - so fortunate to have chosen Delaire - and enjoying life together every day in "The Wonderful World of Delaire".... 'forever'....... (surely a movie with music will come soon)!

Mark ZuckerPresident, Board of Governors

Dear Delaire Members:

I’m happy to report that Camp Delaire is up and running for the season. I just returned from the children’s carnival where all of the grandkids and great grandkids were having a great time. I especially enjoyed seeing parents and grandparents enjoying themselves just watching the kids have fun. This is a very special time of the year during which Delaire excels with lots of family fun. Did you know that for Christmas dinner we had 585 members and their families attend? I must complement Chef Glenn, our new Chief Operating officer Joe Basso, and the entire Delaire staff for doing such a superb job taking care of all of us and our families.

Financial ReportingThe primary objective in preparing our 2020 operating budget was to establish a dues structure that is designed to provide our members with a high level of services comparable to other top notch residential country clubs in South Florida while maintaining fiscal discipline. The 2020 operating budget reflects an operating expense increase that resulted in a dues increase of less than 1 percent (0.77%) or a $177 increase for the entire year. That’s an increase of less than $ 15 per month. This is the second year in a row that Delaire has ended the year with a 6 figure (over $100,000) budget surplus. I want to thank Bob Hovanec (Delaire’s Treasure) and the entire Board of Governors for their focus on financial discipline.

Our New Chief Operating OfficerJoe Basso, our new Chief Operating Officer and General Manager has only been with us for a little over 5 weeks, and what a difference he has already made. He will be presenting his operating plan to the Board by the end of February. Joe specifically asked for 90 days to better understand Delaire and what our membership wants from its Club. There will be many positive changes coming, from Food & Beverage to Golf programming. We are all looking forward to hearing his recommendations.

Our Non-Resident MembersAt the December Board of Governors meeting a motion was unanimously passed acknowledging the many contributions to our club by our non-resident members. They add vitality by their participation in all Club activities and through their payment of Dues and Capital contributions help support our club.

We will begin the year with 63 non-resident non equity members and 17 non-resident equity members.

Bob Hovanec reminded the Board of his 2018 economic study which identified a net benefit (revenue less costs) to each equity member of approximately $3,400 as a result of our non-resident non equity program. The study was reviewed by our outside accountants who confirmed that the concepts used in preparing the study were reasonable and appropriate.

We are a better country club both socially and financially as a result of the on going contributions of our non-resident members and thank them for their continuing membership.

Five Year Capital PlanAs many of you know, on December 15 we presented the 5-year capital plan to over 200 of our members. We followed-up with a number of “Coffee and Bagel“ meetings to further discuss the plan and will follow up with additional meetings with members. I hope to see you at those meetings because we want to hear your comments and questions. We look forward to your feedback and will make modifications to the capital plan based on your comments.

We anticipate going forward with a member vote for the mechanical and infrastructure aspects of the capital plan shortly and addressing the redesign elements later in the year.

I look forward to all members of Camp Delaire continuing to have fun and enjoyment throughout the season.

Message from Your P.O.A. PresidentMarc J. Bressler, P.O.A. President

Your Delaire Country Club Property Owners' Association, Inc. has had a busy year. As you were advised, the storm drainage system had been neglected for decades. This project required a great deal of investigation as parts of the system were unmapped. New maps were designed and produced and have been provided for future use by the POA as well as the Club. A thorough investigation as to costs and bids were entertained to obtain the best job at the best cost. Initially the pipes were cleaned and videoed. Now, in phase 2, they are being repaired or replaced where necessary. At this juncture the drainage project is within budgeted projections and is more than

50% complete with three known pipe compromises to be repaired before beginning Phase 3 in May of 2020. As a result of the foresight of your Board, no special assessment was needed for this project nor has it yet to be necessary to draw on the Line of Credit that was established for this purpose. In addition, as a result of some substantial savings by the Board in unrelated areas, it is anticipated that we will be able to draw less than was projected from the Line of Credit resulting in significant savings of principle and interest expense. The last 1/3 of the project, will be completed in May-June 2020 in accordance with the originally contracted terms. With proper maintenance this system should last 50 plus years.

Another area that has taken many members a good deal of hours is the revision and updating of our documents. The POA Articles of Incorporation, Declaration and Establishment of Covenants and the By-Laws together with Florida State statute are the governing documents and rules under which the POA operates. These documents are almost 40 years old and have been amended by the membership over time. As a result, they may be inconsistent with one another, redundant with sections in a wrong document and in conflict with changing Florida statute. Your Board has reviewed the changes as suggested by the appointed Revision Group. These documents have been indexed for ease of searching and revised in accordance with the current operation of the POA and membership concerns. The proposed revisions will be forwarded to all members in January followed by a Townhall meeting scheduled for February 9, 2020 to enable a full discussion by membership. Thereafter, it is anticipated, together with any revisions from the Townhall meeting, to submit all the documents for a POA Membership vote in the early Spring 2020.

The Board is currently looking into an automated system to monitor maintenance and appearance of all properties throughout our community to assure compliance.

The financial responsibility of the POA is taken very seriously by your Board as is evidenced by our cash balances and sufficient reserves resulting in no need to increase any assessments. As a result of careful financial oversight, your POA is well set for 2020 to handle scheduled improvements, both large and small.

P.O.A. ReportGail Karpel, P.O.A. Secretary

Our aim is to make sure everyone continues to be Happy & Safe at Delaire!

1. Please remember to follow the posted speed limit and stop at all Stop Signs. Please show courtesy while driving. We do not want anyone getting hurt while walking or jogging.

2. Please keep your roofs and sidewalks clean. It is important that all shrubs and trees are trimmed back off the sidewalks and streets. Should you receive a letter from the FDA, please

have the work done promptly. This will help keep our community beautiful.

3. Remember to call the gate or use your gate app when expecting guests.

4. Please be careful when entering Delaire. There are two lanes and sometimes your left lane does not stop when your gate goes up.

5. The U.S. Mail is not always accurate in the delivery. Occasionally the wrong mail is put in your box. Please be kind and bring it to your neighbor.

JOE BASSOA Passion for New Challenges

By Linda Saslow

"Intriguing," was the word Joe Basso used to describe Delaire to his wife Beckie, after he returned home to Michigan from his first visit here in July.

But by the time they came back together for a second trip, Joe knew that this was where he wanted to be. He looked at his wife and said, "This feels like it should be our new home."

"For decades, friends had been urging me to come to South Florida," he recalled. "But I got the right call at the right time."

On November 15, Joe officially joined the Delaire "family" as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer, leaving behind the Midwest, where he had always lived until now.

Joe, who just celebrated his 59th birthday, grew up in a small farm community in Michigan and spent weekends and summer working on his grandfather's farm, which he said taught him hard work and work ethics.

When he started college at Michigan State University, Joes' plan was to major in zoology and get a degree in marine biology. But after several attempts to pass calculus, he gave up that idea, he admitted with a chuckle, and he followed the advice of his mom, who pointed him in the direction of hospitality.

As he recalled, "When I changed my major from zoology to hospitality, my mom said, 'Thank goodness, because when I looked in the newspaper, there were no jobs in marine biology!"

After graduating in 1983 from the Hospitality School at Michigan State University, Joe began his career with Club Corporation of America. When he was given several choices of locations, Joe picked St. Louis—the only city among his options that he could find on the map. It was there that he and Beckie lived for 20 years, raising their four children (one girl and three boys, today spanning in age from 39 to 28), and where the kids all still live today—with the addition of three grandchildren.

Joe's career path has spanned 35 years of private club management in Missouri and Michigan, with the majority of that time spent leading family-oriented country clubs to resounding success. Over the years, Joe became known for his abilities at turning around struggling club operations. His passion for new challenges led him in 2009 to the Birmingham Country Club, one of the most prestigious full-service family oriented country clubs in the metro Detroit area, where he served as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer for almost 11 years. During his tenure at the Birmingham Country Club, Joe led the club through the recession to celebrate national recognition as a prominent club, evidenced by its acknowledgement as a Distinguished Club in 2016 and more recently as an Honorable Mention Platinum Club of America.

With humility, Joe doesn't boast about being one of only 22 club managers to obtain the MCM (Master Club Manager), marking the highest level of achievement for professional managers. He is also an accomplished public speaker and writer, having authored several industry publications—including An Anthology on Club Management, a collection of short essays.

Now at Delaire, Joe once again faces new challenges and is excited to be part of achieving long term visions.

"My greatest challenge now is having come in mid season, and getting my arms around it," he admitted. "I find it important not to rush to implement change for at least the first 90 days, but to look around, observe, get to know the staff and the membership, then by February to deliver a plan to the Board. 'Here's what I've seen and here's what I'm going to do to correct it.' And if I tell you we're going to do something, my word is my bond."

Making changes is a three-year process, according to Joe. "One of my first priorities is to get the club members out of the business of running the club," he said. "After establishing the trust, confidence and support of the management team, the Board would act only as a governing body and entrust the management team with the daily operations."

"None of the changes are insurmountable," he said, "but they take time."

When not working, Joe's leisure side enjoys being outside—fishing reading, and exploring the landscape of a new part of the country. Now in a rental house in West Boca, he and Becky are excited about getting to better know their new home of South Florida.

After more than three decades in the industry, Joe's track record speaks for itself. Moving forward in his new position at Delaire, his enthusiasm, optimism and confidence are contagious. "Give me the keys to the kingdom," he said. "Tell me how you want it run, and then go enjoy your club. You won't be disappointed with the results."

Joe Basso, MCM, CCE

On the HorizonDavid C. Sheldon, CFBE, Director of Food and Beverage

The food and beverage team has been working diligently on developing new dining programs this year with an emphasis on alternative meal selections focused on plant based proteins and vegan options. Our Tuesday casual Grill night has evolved from its original inception to a viable program offering over seventeen menu choices including a variety of salads, over size burgers, pizzas and weekly featured selections. All intended to create a casual environment with price points ranging from $9.95 to $19.95.

During the fall we introduced the 4645 White Cedar dining concept as an experimental program to bring fresh, contemporary, continental cuisine with something for everyone as the inspired objective. An expanded list of starter courses designed to create a table buzz. Our most popular attended evenings are often Chef Glenn's Hors d'oeuvres night as well as the Chef's Bistro night. Typically these nights are well attended and are designed to accommodate several hundred members at one time.

Our Friday evenings continue to evolve as our Signature Series and La Brasserie menus are phasing out in order to bring in a combined a la carte menu referred to as “Cedar Lane”. This concept offers a wide variety of meal choices combining prime cuts with traditional lighter items, offering something for everyone. This distinct new concept brings the best of our Friday and Saturday night dining experiences, offering plenty of prime steaks and seafood specialties on both menus. The pricing ranges from $15-$49 and incorporates weekly Chef’s featured entrees.

This spring the food and beverage department is rolling out several new promotions such as the Sunday Night "Pajama Party" created around a breakfast theme menu which is served for dinner. This event is scheduled for Sunday, February 16th. March has several new programs starting with a Sunday Burger & Brew night scheduled for Sunday, March 8th, and finishes with Margaratville at the pool on Sunday, March 29th, featuring tequila, tacos and southwestern favorites. April is jam packed with many exciting activities including our traditional Easter Brunch on April 12th, followed by a dinner dance party on Saturday, April 18th with "The Chase Band". An abundant Seafood Buffet will be served on Friday, April 24th, serving raw bar delicacies as well as fresh steamed lobster. This seafood extravaganza is followed by our New pizza, pasta & prime pib dinner buffet on Sunday, April 26th, and Women's Sushi, Wine & Martini night on Wednesday, April 29th.

During this winter the management team has devoted quality time with our service team developing and revisiting our training programs. This includes "The Seven Elements of World Class Service," how to exceed member satisfaction, and the importance of taking pride in serving our membership.

As always Delaire Country Club caters and assists with all of your party needs. This includes small intimate gatherings as well as major events and celebrations. We are all here to assist with making your events everything you expect and more.

BEHIND THE SCENESStewart Sims

BEHIND THE SCENES

And the leader of this wonderful group of employees is our Dining Room Manager, “Dino” Dener.

Starting out as a busboy, Danstor “Dino” Dener has been a mainstay in the dining room for the past 22 years. Dino and his family of 7 brothers and 2 sisters emigrated from Haiti 25 years ago. His first job was in the dining room at St. Andrew’s Country Club, but after he worked a party at Delaire, we convinced him that his future lay here at Delaire. Married, and living in Lantana, Dino spends whatever free time he has with his two children and their activities (his daughter plays the trumpet and his son plays football). When asked what he likes best about Delaire, Dino’s response was “the membership”. I am sure we all feel the same way about Dino, he is truly someone special.

Just like Cheers, the bar in Boston, Delaire is a place where “everyone knows your name”, or at least everyone on the dining room staff knows your name. (I am embarrassed to admit, that I don’t know everyone’s name, and that, occasionally, I ask one of the wait staff to tell me the name of someone I should know). So, in this issue of The Wonderful World of Delaire, we would like to acknowledge the hard work of the people in the dining room who work tirelessly to make our dining experience so pleasant.

The “Vision” for our Club as set forth in Delaire’s Strategic Plan is as follows:

“Be the most desirable boutique residential country club in South Florida”

Delaire operates within a very competitive residential country club market. To realize this vision, Delaire must invest to maintain and improve the quality of its facilities, amenities and activities, just like we all invest to maintain and improve the quality of our homes.

This Capital Plan is the result of a process that started in 2016, when the Club hired Dreux Isaac & Associates, Inc. to perform a Reserve Study which identified all of the approximately 1,000 physical assets owned by the Club, estimated each asset’s remaining useful life and projected the cost and frequency of replacement over the next 30 years.

Working in conjunction with Management, the Finance Committee and various other committees, and taking into account input from focus groups and member surveys, the Long Range Planning Committee created an initial five year capital plan for 2020 to 2024. The initial plan was presented to membership at a Town Hall Meeting held on March 31, 2019. One of the key messages we heard was that if we are going to invest in our club, we must “do it right”.

In the course of creating the initial plan, the Long Range Planning Committee realized that we needed a separate committee, with both special skills and broad membership representation to take the plan to the next level.

On April 2, 2019 the Board of Governors established the Ad Hoc Capital Replacement & Improvement Committee (the “Ad Hoc Capital Committee”) with the following mandate: “…work with Management to advance the development of the Five Year Capital Plan created by the Long Range Planning Committee as presented to Members at the Town Hall Meeting held on March 31, 2019.”

Approximately 25 Delaire members volunteered for the Ad Hoc Capital Committee. Working with Management they spent countless hours over nine months meeting with Architects, Interior, Exterior and Kitchen Design Consultants, Construction Managers, and Landscape Design companies to create a Capital Plan to address current capital needs and help Delaire move successfully toward its vision.

On December 15th at the second Town Hall meeting, the Ad Hoc Capital Committee presented to membership a comprehensive five

year Capital Plan. This plan addressed the Club’s capital needs in the following five major areas:

• Clubhouse interior update including décor, furniture, outdoor dining, and pool area with a pass through bar at the rear of the dining room which can also function as a halfway house. Critical to this update was recognizing that we could not do it piece by piece. Our clubhouse must have a consistent décor throughout.

• Golf infrastructure and perimeter, including mechanicals such as irrigation and safety equipment, and landscaping of the perimeter

• Kitchen equipment replacement in both kitchens much of which is 20+ years old

• Clubhouse mechanical replacement needs including air conditioners, laundry and water heaters

• Technology, including both hardware and software replacements

Our President, Mark Zucker, made it clear at the Town Hall meeting that the meeting was not going to be “one and done.” During a series of meetings with members, the following areas were identified as ones needing further review and/or revision: the design of the entrance and rotunda, certain color choices and whether or not to switch the men’s card room with the existing golf shop.

We anticipate moving forward with that part of the 5 year Capital Plan relating to our infrastructure including kitchen equipment replacement, clubhouse mechanical needs, golf course infrastructure and mechanicals and technology shortly and with the design elements later in the year. The Board as well as the members of the Long Range Planning and Ad Hoc Capital Committees hope you will support this very important initiative.

I want to take this opportunity to extend special thanks to Delaire Management including Joe Basso, Brian Bowles, Roger Edwards, Glenn Matusik and David Sheldon, our President Mark Zucker who has worked tirelessly to move the Capital Plan forward and to the following Delaire members of the Ad Hoc Capital and Long Range Planning Committees who gave so much of their time and talent to this effort:

Chairs: David Simon, Bob Hovanec, Janet Kaplan, Paul Glantz, Art Newman and Andy Lazar.

Committee Members: Murray Gross, Curt Karpel, Stewart Sims, Lee Moss, Jim Newman, Art Canter, Lenore Gordon, Debbie Seidel, Ron Ellish, Mike Samakow, Udella Newman, Leslie Goldberg, Judy Tarter, Herb Levy, Irv Singer, Deb Kaplan, Nancy Carver, Joe Domenick, Robin Malkin, Bonnie Schwartz, Nancy Green, Howard Friedman, Andy Chavkin, Rick Pardo and John Harris.

I hope everyone has enjoyed the wonderful golf events these past few months. I want to thank you all for your participation in our men's and women's league, the major tournaments and the member guest events. Our Tuesday women's golf clinics have been well attended and will continue after the Holiday Season. The men's clinics will begin in January at a time still to be determined.

The goal of the staff is to make your golf experience as pleasurable as possible by being available whenever we can to answer questions, help with club

selection and get you out on the course to enjoy play- with no Tee Times at Delaire. In addition, demo clubs are in the golf shop for you to try at your leisure. We have the latest models from Callaway, Taylor Made, Titleist, Ping and XXIO.

I want to welcome Marie Robinson to our staff as the new golf shop manager. Her experience at Boca West and Addison Reserve makes her ideally suited for Delaire. I think you will find the shop well stocked with current attire for our Delaire fashionistas. Please come in and introduce yourself to Marie.

Please check your calendars and emails for upcoming events, course conditions and all golf information.

Here's wishing all members and their families a Happy and Healthy New Year.

With a growing number of Delaire golfers, participation has been wonderful. The start of the 2019-2020 season has shown enthusiasm for our entire golf program. The women's and men's associations have initiated new events and tournaments. Our mixed 9 and 18 hole events provide both fun competition and sociability. These tournaments are held at least once a month. Members are also welcome to invite guests to a 9 & dine, if everyone stays for dinner. Our showcase event each year is the Mixed Member-Guest tournament. This year, we'd like to thank Arlene and Harvey Kohn for chairing this special day. Members and guests are treated to brunch, hors d'oeuvres, and dinner filled with Chef Glen's gastric delights. As always, Joe, Billy and our entire golf staff help orchestrate a great day on the links.

Starting January 1, 2020, the entire golf world is changing to the same, new handicap system. Presently, there are 6 different handicap procedures used world wide. Soon we will all be following the same one. Delaire's Golf Committee, in conjuncture with the DWGA and the DMGA, has been working to help make this transition as easy as possible for our members.

1. Download the GHIN App on your smart phone and begin using it.2. Post your scores the same day that you play.3. Be able to calculate your handicap for the course you will be playing.4. Be able to calculate "Net Double Bogey" for the course you will be playing.

This new concept determines the maximum score a player may take on any one hole.

There will be seminars reviewing the procedures for the World Handicap System, January 3rd at 10am and January 8th at 4pm. Please, contact the Pro Shop if you need assistance.

Looking forward, our golf calendar is filled with fun, varied events such as, the DWGA and DMGA will be hosting their Member-Guest days. The Mixed Club Championship is scheduled for February 23rd. Both gross and net prizes will be awarded. Other mixed events include an 18 hole Sadie Hawkins tournament on January 26th and 9 & dines on January 10th and February 23rd.

Three types of fairy ring symptoms are observed in turfgrasses: Type I, Type II, and Type III. A Type I fairy ring causes the soil and thatch to become hydrophobic (water-repellant), killing the turf in patches, rings, or arcs. In areas affected by a Type I fairy ring, the thatch and soil are extremely dry and repel water. Type II fairy rings appear as rings or arcs of turf that are dark green and growing more quickly than the surrounding turf. In a Type III fairy ring, mushrooms or puffballs are produced in a ring or arc. The type of symptom expressed by a particular fairy ring may change during the year according to weather conditions. Type III fairy ring symptoms are more prevalent during extended periods of wet weather. Type I and Type II fairy ring symptoms are most common during hot, dry weather in the summer.

FAIRY RINGS AND NEMATODESHave you noticed circular rings on the golf course on the fairway or green?

This phenomenon is called a fairy ring, a fairy circle, an elf circle, or a pixie ring. They could grow as large as 10 yards in diameter. The cause of this naturally occurring ring starts when the spawn of a fungus (mushroom) falls in a favorable spot and sends out a subterranean network of fine, tubular threads called hyphae.

In order to treat these blemishes we need to perform a few maintenance functions which are generally routine for us. These include regular irrigation, removing excess thatch, and aerating the soil. We also encourage beneficial soil microbes by top dressing with well aged manure.

While researching fairy rings using a Google search, I found stories that fairy rings have mystical qualities, both good and bad. Fun for some, but we want to rid our golf course of them as best we can.

Have you noticed some grasses appear red instead of the normal green color we expect? This is often caused by nematodes.

Most nematodes are harmless, but a handful of troublesome species attack the outside surfaces of plants and grasses, burrowing into the plant

tissue and causing root, stem, folar and even flower damage. Other nematodes live inside the plants for part of their lives, causing damage from the inside out.

Nematodes are sometimes confused with roundworms although they are not even closely related to true worms, but resemble worms under a microscope. They are multicellular insects with smooth, unsegmented bodies. The adults often look long and slender, although some species appear pear-shaped. They attach themselves to plants or grasses and live on the nutrients supplied. So tiny, yet so malicious, we are constantly on guard in treating our course against them.

Rules Clinic with Alan Tarter

Tuesday tournaments have been played with enthusiastic league members who are participating in great numbers. Challenging yourself, enjoying our beautiful course, and making new friends is a winning combination.

Food, fun, and new friends were the order of the day on December 5, 2019 when Delaire hosted the second annual Delaire, Polo, St Andrews, and Woodfield Invitational Tournament. Kudos to Cathy Kimmel who worked with our Pros to organize the day. Eighty ladies from the four clubs enjoyed a challenging round of golf as well as a beautiful breakfast and lunch coordinated by Brenda Moss.

SITUATION # 1 - Player A's ball is in temporary water at the base of a small bush. Although Player A cannot play the ball as it lies, Player A believes that relief is allowed from the temporary water. Player A determines the nearest point of complete relief and drops another ball in the one club-length relief area, not nearer the hole than thereference point.

Player A plays the dropped ball.

**Although Player A's ball is in an abnormal course condition, relief is not allowed when it is clearly unreasonable to play the ball because of something other than an abnormal course condition. See Rule 16.1a(3).

Player A has moved his or her ball in play and played from a wrong place. Player A loses the hole in match play or incurs a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play for a breach of Rule 14.7a.

SITUATION # 2 - Player A's ball is embedded in the soft fairway. Player A lifts the embedded ball, places a tee in the ground just behind where the ball was embedded and drops the ball about two feet behind the tee. The dropped ball embeds in the ground. Player A lifts the ball and drops another ball about three feet behind where the first dropped ball embedded.

Player A plays the dropped ball.

**There is no relief for a ball that embeds when dropped. See Rule 16.3a(2).

THE SOUTH COUNTY LEAGUEWhat a year for our South County team! Fifty-five members (no limits on handicaps) were on the roster of which routinely more than 20 played each week and helped create one of the best seasons in Delaire’s history. the league is composed of 16 South Palm Beach Country Clubs. Our team finished the regular season in a neck in neck finish, landing in second place. In the semi-finals we beat Hunter’s Run to get into the division finals. The finals for our division was played at Polo and after all matches completed that day we ended in a tie. After a 3 hole playoff we were still deadlocked and entered into a sudden death match which we barely got edged out of.

We had great depth as a team, at all levels of handicaps. The next season should be even more exciting as, due to our record, we’re moving up to the next division, and will be playing an entire new group of the area’s top clubs.

The other clubs definitely know that Delaire is a force to contend with in league play, whether at our course, or even on theirs. Thanks to the strong support the teams get by all of the interest and participation by our members. We want to thank all of those who played for their efforts, and look forward to having a great time together as we compete in this season’s upcoming matches.

EMERALD LEAGUEThe Emerald League is comprised of 11 country clubs for players with a 14 handicap or less. We are limited to play only 8 players each week as we compete against 72 players on the same golf course. This year we had a total team roster comprised of 24 players which is more than most other clubs twice our size and we had the most single digit handicapped golfers versus those of all the other teams.

After 2 weeks of play your Delaire team was the leader of all the other teams in the league playing against arguably the best 80 country club golfers in the region. Our team fell a few spots during the year and competed for a playoff spot until the last week of competition where we just missed making the playoffs. The guys did a great job and showed significant improvement over the previous year.

Brian Rubin, assistant tennis professional at Delaire, is the National AAU Pickle Ball champion in the 35 to 50 year-old class. He is also the Davie Shootout doubles champion. These are significant accomplishments for a man who grew up in South Florida, has been playing tennis since age 4, has been assisting Lawrence Sagel for the past 10 years but just took up Pickle Ball 6 months ago. Introduced to the game by a friend, Brian liked it immediately and began playing first, once a week and then, twice a week. He quickly rose through the ranks and began playing tournaments at higher and higher levels. To become National AAU champion in such a short time is simply amazing. Brian says that a tennis background is an advantage but Pickle Ball is clearly a sport for all ages, with or without past tennis experience.

Pickle Ball, for those unfamiliar with the sport, is played on a court much smaller than a tennis court with a hard surface not unlike like a hard tennis court. A paddle is used, not a racquet, with a ball around the size of a large wiffle ball. It is now the fastest growing sport in America. Just four years ago in 2015 there were about 3,000 players nationwide; now there are over three million.

Finally, while we Delarians wait patiently for Pickle ball to arrive on campus, there are 12 new courts soon to be built at Veterans Park in Delray Beach.

DON'T IGNORE YOUR BACK PAIN!Four of every five people will suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. The actual cause of low back pain can vary. Some of the possible causes include:

1. Lumbar or Sacral radiculopathy: The result of pressure on a nerve coming from the spine, often caused by a bulging or herniated disc. This is often mistakenly called sciatica which comes from compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle deep in the buttock.

2. Spinal stenosis: This is a narrowing of the bony spinal canal which causes the nerves to be squeezed.

3. Facet arthropathy: This is usually due to aging or arthritis of the joints in the spine.

4. Lumbar sprain/strain: This is a common cause of low back pain that may be due to injury to multiple structures, such as muscles and tendons. The paraspinals, parallel rows of muscles that run up and down either side of the spinal column, are the major muscle group usually involved in lower back injury.

5. Bony fractures: These may be due to trauma, or sometimes occur without any injury in people with osteoporosis.

Without proper mobility, stability, and alignment your back structures will wear down as they would if you had tires that were out of alignment. Seeking proper attention to help you regain proper mobility and stability of your spine, reducing aches, and teaching you how to take care of your spine is essential .

To maintain a healthy back it is important to stretch and strengthen the core. When in doubt, plank it out!

For the first time since 2009, this leafy green vegetable has made the non-profit Environmental Working Group's Annual Dirty Dozen list, which ranks conventionally grown fruits and vegetables by the amount of pesticide residue on them after rinsing and peeling as Tested by the USDA and FDA.

Of 47 fruits and vegetables, KALE came in # 3 for the Most Contaminated, with 92% of samples having detectable levels of Two or more Pesticides. Some 60% had traces of DCPA (Dacthal) - a possible human carcinogen that has been banned in Europe but is still allowed in the United States crops!

The other fruits and vegetables on the "2019 Dirty Dozen List" are in descending order of contamination: Strawberries, Spinach, Nectarines, Apples, Grapes, Peaches, Cherries, Pears, Tomatoes, Celery, and Potatoes. Those with few, if any, detected residue on the "Clean Fifteen" list are: Avocados, Sweet Corn, Pineapples, Sweet Peas (frozen), Onions, Papayas, Egg Plants, Asparagus, Kiwi Fruit, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cantelopes, Broccoli, Mushrooms and Honeydew.

Bottom Line: By choosing organic versions of fruits and vegetables on the "Dirty Dozen List", such as Kale and conventionally grown produce on the "Clean Fifteen List", you can have all the benefits of eating more produce while at the same time reducing your exposure to pesticides.

It certainly seems to make good sense to always try to make good choices for our long range good health when possible.

Added Note: A big thank you to the late Dr. Carlton Fredericks who peeked my interest in 'Nutrition' starting with his radio show. Carlton would be very pleased that we've been alerted about the contaminants in our food. Dr. Carlton Fredericks said - "You Don't Have To Be A Purist" We just have to do the best that we can!

This season the Program and Activities Committee initiated some new events for our members, generously offered by other members, who want to share their interests and expertise.

In November, Gary Weinstein presented Health Tech, Live Longer: Apps, Devices, Dr. Google, and gave very helpful information about how to use technology to monitor and improve our health. On February 4, he will continue with Productivity: Time Management, Top Priority Apps, Phone, Computer, Automation (the future).

In November, Stuart Berkowitz presented Avoiding Dementia, and told us what the extensive research says about the things we can do to affect our mental and physical health, hopefully lessening our chances of developing dementia. In December, he presented Longevity, and continued with further extensive research about what affects longevity and again, what we can do to increase our chances of living longer.

Richard Abbey is conducting Learn to Sketch Classes, which began on November 8 and are continuing every other Friday.

Also in November, we began the Movie Club by showing the Turner Classic, Rear Window, starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly. It was fascinating to watch and discuss afterwards at dinner. We talked about very interesting trivia surrounding the movie, the characters, the movie set and the director, Alfred Hitchcock. We will continue with future movies, Turner Classics and some old favorites.

In January, Alex Clark and Joanie Schneebaum are organizing Dance Classes which will meet every other Tuesday evening.

We look forward to your suggestions for future programs.

DELAIRE MEMBERS CAREDELAIRE MEMBERS CARECharla Levine

"Orchard View Elementary School Loves Delaire" - Stephanie Randall, TeacherPlease consider joining our program!!!

In the May 2019 issue of "The Wonderful World of Delaire" we heard from Delaire volunteers. All volunteers agreed that they were getting as much, or more, out of their volunteering as the teachers and students. This time we hear from the principal and staff about their gratitude for the program and the positive impact the program is having on student performance and progress. (see below)

Please remember: If you can't contribute to the program on a weekly basis, there are many sporadic needs for volunteers. If you are interested in this type of participation contact Charla or Linda. (see below)

In it's fourth year, the volunteer project at OVES is growing by leaps and bounds. It is a win-win for all involved. There are currently 30 of your neighbors at Delaire giving back to their community: contributing to and benefitting from participation.

Kudos to all involved for their commitment and success!!!

OVES is for students in grades Kindergarten-5. Ninety-five percent of OVES's students live in poverty, 40% are English Language Learners and 25% of the students are students with disabilities.

We are beginning replication of the program in other residential communities in partnership with their local schools. It is an "adopt a school" program.

For further information/clarification e-mail: Charla Levine, [email protected] or Linda Saslow, [email protected]

AND NOW, WORDS FROM OVES STAFF"The volunteer program that we have with members of Delaire Country Club is contributing to the success of our complete turnaround program at Orchard View. Teachers at a high needs school like Orchard View need 'all hands on deck' for students to get individual attention. The volunteers are tuned in to the teacher's needs, and the particular times that the teachers need the most help. What's more important is the relationships that are being made. Students feel that the volunteers believe in them, are important to them, and this encourages positive student academic and social emotional behaviors. Thanks to our volunteers we have more students feeling accepted and validated. Delaire volunteers are significant to the higher level performance, progress and success Orchard View students and staff are achieving." Lisa Lee, Principal Orchard View Elementary School

"My volunteers are amazing! They all came to help celebrate Friendsgiving. My class is thankful to them. They are a huge reason why we are successful." Thanks! Stephanie

"I can't say enough about how fortunate I am to have Carol work in my classroom! The children absolutely adore her. She works with many of the children and always gives them lots of love, hugs, emotional and academic support as well as bringing them treats! She is always there when I need her for Field Trips, class projects, or whatever else is needed to assist me in the classroom.Thank you so much for this wonderful program!" Renee White, First Grade Teacher

"I am so grateful for Jim Clark. He is fabulous and the kids just look forward to him coming every week. I am so happy for all your help and value all of your work for our children." Barbara Feldman, Fifth Grade Teacher

"I am so grateful for the time that the volunteers gave to help our school set up our newly purchased guided reading books. This system was comprised of over 3,500 books which needed to be individually stamped, organized and inventoried by level in order to be utilized by teachers. The volunteers came in and got right to work as a team helping to ensure that each set of books was inventoried and accounted for as well as which ones were missing so I could contact the company. As a reading coach, my job is to be in classrooms supporting teachers in providing strong literacy instruction. Because the volunteers jumped right in and got to work, I was able to get back into classrooms to help teach. When I returned to the room, they provided a checklist of what had been done and where to leave off. Joan (Zieky) returned to complete the project that week! This job was an ENORMOUS undertaking and I can't thank the group of ladies enough for their organization and attention to detail in making sure these sets were in the hands of teachers and students. The teachers LOVE these books and are using them to teach reading in their small groups. We are already seeing progress!" Lisa Hirschy, Reading Specialist

There are three methods you can use to protect your data. The most robust is to backup your data to the "cloud" with a program like "Backblaze" or "iDrive." Most experts recommend "Backblaze" ($60 annually for unlimited backup of one computer) for its simplicity. It requires no technical knowledge and automatically backs up your data in the background. "iDrive" ($52 annually for 2 TB on multiple computers) provides more options for advanced users. Both programs offer cell phone and tablet "Apps" that allow you to view or download backed-up files.

After downloading a program, you will be prompted to create a secure password to access your cloud backup. The programs encrypt and upload your files to their servers over the internet. The initial backup takes several days, but subsequent backups are limited to new and modified files and require less time. Backups retain prior file versions and mirror the folders on your computer. After your initial backup, consider testing the program by downloading several files to your computer. In the event of actual data loss, you can download and restore files to your computer over the internet. If you require faster service, these companies can overnight a USB drive containing all your files.

You can also backup your files by copying them to an external hard drive connected to yourcomputer's USB port. This can be automated with programs like Apple's "Time Machine" (included with the operating system), "Carbon Copy Cloner" or "Super Duper." The latter two create an exact image (clone) of your hard disk. Although this method eliminates annual fees, your data is only protected from physical property damage or theft if you store an additional copy of your data offsite.

The third backup method takes a different approach; relying on file synchronization programs like iCloud (Apple), Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive. These programs synchronize files and folders between your computer, tablet, and cell phone. File deletion or modification on one device is instantly mirrored across all devices and cannot be reversed. Synchronization also fails to protect against "ransomware attacks," which occur when a malicious email attachment disguised as a legitimate file is downloaded or opened. The malware encrypts your data and demands payment for an unlock code that is usually not forthcoming.

If you experience data loss, having a backup strategy will save your time and data. Consider using some or all of these methods before disaster strikes!

The Delaire Book Club met for the first time this season on October 28, 2019, when we discussed The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo. It is a novel set in Malaysia in the 1930s. It is a beautifully and intricately woven novel where the author uses historical fiction and magical realism to tell a story that pulls us into a world of masters and servants, age-old superstitions, Chinese mythology, sibling rivalry, forbidden love and identity all along with a mystery we have to solve. "Magical realism weaves fantasy and myth into everyday life and causes the ordinary to become extraordinary and the magical to become commonplace. It is way of questioning reality to reveal insights about society and human nature." (thoughtco.com) Our discussion clarified some of the mystery surrounding the novel.

In December, we discussed A Woman is No Man by Etaf Rum, about three generations of Palestinian-American women struggling to express their individual desires within the confines of the Arab culture along with shocking violence in their community. it is a novel about family loyalty, gender expectations, domestic violence, assimilation, honor, shame, cultural continuity, and the strength of one woman. It was apparent from our discussion that everyone thought deeply about the circumstances portrayed in the book.

Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane was our January selection. It is a novel about two families, who live next door to each other, set in the 1970s. The rookie cops have very different families where Francis Gleeson's wife Lena is lonely in this small suburban town, and Brian Stanhope's wife Anne is unstable. Kate Gleeson and Peter Stanhope, the young children, become best friends and later more than just friends, but their relationship and both wives' problems set the stage for the tragic events that occur. In the end the author very sensitively show us how redemption and forgiveness can overcome the tragedy.

On February 10, we will read The Dutch House by Anne Patchett, set over five decades, it is about two intelligent people who cannot overcome their past. Despite every outward sign of success, Danny, the narrator, and Maeve, brother and sister, are only truly comfortable when they are together. Throughout their lives they return to the story of what they lost with the combination of humor and rage. After their mother leaves, their father marries a younger woman, who never accepts them and eventually forces them out of their father's life. Danny and Maeve are very attached to the house they lived in (before the new wife) and constantly reminisce what it was like to live there; how is was a part of them. At one point, Danny asks, "Do you think it's ever possible to see the past as it actually was?" We could all ask the same question of ourselves.

The book club will continue on Monday, March 16 and Monday, April 20.

I look forward to seeing you and always welcome your comments and reading suggestions.

The Women's Discussion Group met for the first time this season on November 6, 2019, when we discussed "Let Go of Your Grudges. They Are Doing You no Good." In his New York Times article, Tim Herrara says that one of his favorite party games is to ask a group of people this simple question: What is your oldest and most cherished grudge? Without fail, every person unloads with shockingly specific, intimate detail about their grudge. Career slights, offhand-yet-cutting remarks, bitter friendship dissolutions, nothing too small or too petty when it comes to grudges. We learned in our discussion that some had long-term grudges and did not want to let them go; others said they don't hold grudges but when they further considered, they realized they may have. We did learn that letting go feels very liberating.

In December, we discussed "How to Have Closer Friendships and Why You Need Them." Emma Pattee, in her New York Times article says that even if you find it easy to make friends — and it's not for most people — getting truly close to people is difficult. We have all kinds of friends and friends at different stages of our lives but she says, friends that "I can tell you anything and count on you always" kind of friends. Not so much." We talked about what friends mean to us, why they can be helpful in so many ways, why they are good for our health. Positive reasons for friends are endless and we can make new ones all the time.

In January and in March we continue always with the goal of having insightful discussions and hopefully leaving some new thoughts and knowledge we can consider for our own lives...

We welcome your comments and suggestions.

"Where do I begin?"... those are the opening words of the theme song from the movie "Love Story"... told to us at lunch at Delaire 15 years ago by lyricist Carl Sigman, then a Delaire member. He explained to us that he was having such a difficult time writing the lyrics, that he agonized to his wife, Ellie, "Where do I begin?"... to which she replied: "That's it! That's your start."

So too, with our own love story with Delaire. We met on April 23, 1995 on a coffee date in Cambridge, MA, and knew immediately. That's where "we" began. Steve's mother, Sylvia, then a Delaire member, was in Boston for Passover at that time and invited us to Delaire for the next Thanksgiving.

And again, it was love at first sight... we and Delaire. Sylvia lived on Live Oak Blvd. on the 9th fairway, only 11 houses from the tennis courts. Since Gail and I both played golf, but had converted to active tennis, we hit tennis balls in the morning, and golf balls in the afternoon. The dining experience was wonderful.

After Sylvia passed, we joined the club as full members and became noted for three things: 8 AM tennis everyday; returning from Boston on long weekends for the stone crabs on "Seafood Night", and, over the years, a progressively longer train of grandkids walking up to the clubhouse with strollers, bikes and scooters for bagels, muffins and coffee.

After a still-to-us unexplainable 4 year wanderlust, we returned to Delaire 2 years ago with a finer appreciation for all of its amazing amenities and here we begin, again.

Ned Did it again. On Thursday, November 21, 2019, Ned Dorman made another great presentation in his Music and Composer series. Starting with "You've Got Tc Get Up In the Morning" to "God Bless America", Ned told the story of Irving Berlin, a Russian immigrant, who became the iconic American composer.

Not only were the songs great, but Ned's video clips showed the timelessness of his music and Ned's anecdotes added another element to the story. I particularly liked the background to "You've Got to Get Up in the Morning", because, just like Irving Berlin, I hated 5:00 reveille. (Fortunately, that only lasted through boot camp.)

If you want to see Ned's presentation, please visit this link: https://vimeo.com/383111907

After "Dreaming of a White Christmas" with Irving Berlin and "Dancing in the Streets" with Motown, Ned Dorman and his "Sounds of Music!" has more Music Appreciation sessions planned for 2020.

You are sure to be entertained, so come with Delaire friends and guests for a fabulous evening.

If you would like to sign up for Couples Canasta, Couples Bridge, or learn Canasta, please contact Jackie Liptz at [email protected].

We have a large Couples Canasta group (over 60 couples on the list), that meets once a month on a Thursday evening, for socializing from 6:00 to 6:45 and playing from 7-9. You may bring your own dinner or Jackie will order sandwiches from TooJays. At 6:45, we pick randomly for the couple with whom you will play cards, and hopefully, have a fun filled early evening.

On Tuesday evenings, we have a Couples Bridge group, that meets in the ladies card room at 7:00. We play social bridge in a very relaxed manner. By the way, "a couple" could be two women or two men. If you need a partner, I will try to find you one.

Finally, Gail Karpel and I teach Canasta to new players on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30, assuming there are no other club conflicts. Even if you just want to sharpen up your Canasta skills and learn strategy, we are happy to help.

Looking forward to hearing from you!!

NANCY CARVER

David and I have been residents of Delaire for almost 15 years. During this time, I have been a member of the Golf Committee for 10 years, including being DWGA President, co-chair of the golf committee and presently its chair. I have also served on the Green Committee. For several years, I have regularly worked closely with the Club’s golf professionals in arranging our mixed golf tournaments and social events.

My previous Board experiences include serving on the Board of my synagogue and of my northern country club. As a small business owner of a learning center for 25 years, I had the opportunity to work with

challenged children, their parents and school administrators. From this experience, I was confronted with addressing the difficulties associated with helping my clients navigate through a bureaucratic environment. As a Delaire Board member since September, I understand the responsibilities of governing an increasingly diverse membership. I look forward to continuing my service on the Board and enhancing the good life at Delaire.

DAVE KAPLAN

Delaire MembershipDeb and I became Resident Equity Members in 2010. We tore down the house and then moved into our newly constructed retirement home in 2012. We both are very active in the Delaire community. Deb is a former Board member and Treasurer of the Club and has been on many committees. I have been on five different committees including Membership, Golf, Fitness, and two Ad Hoc Committees including the one that drafted and presented to membership a new set of improved Club By-Laws in 2018. I also spent a brief period of time on the Property Owners’ Association Board.

Professional Background and ActivitiesI worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP for 37 years. Early in my career I served businesses in dozens of industries including technology, retail, energy, manufacturing, services, not for profit, banking and many more. I entered the partnership in 1987 and became the National Office Accounting Consulting Services Managing Partner in 1995. For roughly two decades, among other responsibilities, I led a team of, ultimately, over 100 other partners and experienced managers that assisted all of the Firm’s clients and our colleagues in addressing and resolving the most complex and contentious financial, business, transactional, and regulatory issues. Often the most difficult matters rose to my level for issue management, resolution, and decision-making. My responsibilities and experiences honed my skills in listening, communicating, analyzing, understanding economics and business, collaborating and building relationships, planning and thinking strategically, and arriving at the right decisions for our constituencies. In addition, for many years, I was either a member or the Chairman of two of the three official U.S. Boards that set accounting standards in the United States.

I have Bachelors’ and Masters’ degrees in Business Administration and Accounting. I have been on over a dozen local town, private school, university, and professional committees as well as other not-for-profit Boards such as The Computer Museum in Boston or Private Foundations.

About DelaireThe Board has made recent progress developing some of the underlying building blocks needed to develop a long-term plan. But more work and strategic thinking is needed. My goal, in accepting a nomination for the Board, is to bring strategic focus, business experience and analytical skills to the Delaire Board room to facilitate sound, actionable, long-term strategic and capital-enhancement plans to truly position Delaire as one of the most desirable boutique residential golf communities in South Florida.

Some near-term steps to achieve more immediate enhancements include further listening to member concerns and ideas, instituting a process to ensure the Club responds to those matters, fully understanding underlying club economics, decreasing waste, being fiscally prudent, providing our staff with the support and tools to assist them in improving their effectiveness, addressing market challenges, being balanced and fair in allocation of fees and assessments between membership classes, and increasing Board transparency.

Thank you, in advance, for supporting my candidacy.

ROB LIDZ

Allow me to begin by stating why I am running for the Board of Governors. There are several important reasons. First is my dedication to Delaire which began as soon as Barbara and I arrived on campus at the end of 2014. We immediately knew we had made the right decision and from day one I felt an obligation to serve our new community as I did our co-op in New York where I served as treasurer helping to negotiate a transformative financial package that remains in place today. Over the past five years I have been a member of the Communications Committee, the ad hoc Environmental Committee, associate editor of the Wonderful World of Delaire magazine and have served as Treasurer of the POA since March of 2015. I feel this service has given me sufficient knowledge about our country club to make a meaningful contribution to the Board of Governors.

My experience of having founded a wholesale button company in 1986 (yes, I am the Button Man of Delaire) and managed it until it was sold allowed me to deal with a diverse group of personalities as well as giving me the tools to manage finances in varying business climates. While running our business I served as president of the building’s co-op board. Merging the needs of business owners into what became a dynamic and successful board of directors was particularly challenging and satisfying.

After retirement in 2010, I became a registered community mediator in the South Bronx of New York. This experience advanced my ability to listen first, think before speaking then bring people with widely divergent opinions to a middle ground where their differences were resolved. This service and my leadership role in other situations leads me to believe I bring perspective that may be of value to the Delaire Board of Governors.

Finally, I am aware I was not selected by the Nominating Committee. This does not diminish my desire to run for the Board because should I not run, there will be no way for me to demonstrate how serious I am about becoming a Board member and continuing to serve Delaire, my full time, community family.

MICHAEL SAMAKOW

Susan and I love being part of the Delaire community. Why wouldn’t anyone. We live in a tropical paradise, enjoying our favorite activities, in wonderful facilities. More than all of that we are surrounded by incredible friends and neighbors that make Delaire a delight to experience every day. It is a lifestyle and a community that we all have made our home.

However, like most residential golf communities, changing social patterns, have created challenges for the future of all clubs, including Delaire. Delaire’s relatively small population and desire to maintain a premium level, only increases its challenges for the future. We are about to make a huge investment in the club’s future. I’d like to help insure that the choices made, and monies spent, are in the very best interest of the members, both existing and those we hope to attract.

That’s why I’m seeking your support, to earn a position on the Board of Governors.

I believe I have the educational background, the business acumen, past club accomplishments, the time and energy, and finally, the vision, to help work with the board to ensure a vibrant and continuing bright future for our community.

While I feel a bit uncomfortable talking about my accomplishments, I’ll make an exception as I’ve been asked to so for this profile.

Education: I am a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania, dual majoring in Finance and Marketing.Business Acumen: I took over a small, but very successful, family owned business located in Pittsburgh, and built it into a multi-state, (PA, NY, OH), 18-location, mini conglomerate. In the process, I acquired four failing business, in the same industry, (without any outlay of funds), and within one year returned each of them to profitability. In 2014, a Fortune 500 company approached me, and purchased our companies. We continue to be their landlord on the properties, and have added to our holdings, now focusing on real estate development.

Club Accomplishments: I have served on numerous committees over the past few years. And with that service, I have either been the initiating force or a strong contributor to many benefits to the membership. As a guest of the Food Be. Beverage committee, at my request, Saul Kimmel chose me to chair a small group of members where we created the Delaire grill concept that is currently run on Tuesday evenings. On the Finance Committee, working individually with Bob Hovanec, we created a list of large expense items, that for unexplainable reasons, had not been put up for bid on a regular basis. Our work created savings to the club that could exceed $200,000 by the end of the year. On the Greens Committee, I asked Paul Glantz if I could help to manage the Driving Range tee area. I purchased new signage showing how to hits balls to cause less damage from divots, and created a system that uses less tee space so that we don’t have to use the mats.

Time & Energy: Of almost all the existing board members, and current candidates, I’m one of the very few that actually resides at Delaire year round. That gives me the ability to be working for the members interest, hands on, every day. And for energy, ask anyone who knows me, there isn’t any task that I don’t give 110% when asked.

Vision: This might be where I may differ a bit from some others. We all believe that Delaire is an exceptional community, far different than others. I believe that any investments in the club’s future should create both additional value for the members, but also raise the value to potential members, so that new members see that uniqueness, and will pay asking home prices to live here, or as a non residential member, would be willing to pay more for that experience. We aren’t like other clubs, our facilities, our convenience, our warmth of community; are exceptional attributes, unlike anywhere else. It is a very special community, and should be able to command more from those who want to be part of it.

Thank you for your time in reading this. You have a number of good candidates to choose from, all friends and neighbors of ours. I look forward to having the opportunity to be considered to help lead the club for the future.

JIM NEWMAN

Udella and I have been here at Delaire since 2001. Time really does go quickly when you are having a good time! We are here year-round and truly call this place home and the members our extended family.

My Experience at Delaire

• The first committee I was on was in 2003 and it was the Planning Committee

• I served on the POA from 2004 to 2009 including being President.

• I served on the construction committee on behalf of the POA for our new club house and surrounding area. *Best Committee I ever had the privilege of being part of by the way.

• I served on the DCC club board from 2012 to 2015. One of the best things I did during that tenure was to change the fitness classes from paid to free.

• I am currently serving on the Renovation Committee for the Club house renovations.

• I have been on 35 different committees or board positions while at Delaire.

• I love Delaire and am always thinking about what is best for Delaire.

Why am I running for the Nominating Committee?

I think with my background and experience I know what is needed by a board member. I am also interested in creating a document for the next Nominating Committee so we can leave a “road map” for future Nominating Committee Members to get guidance from.

As always, if I can answer a question for you, I am glad to do so.

I appreciate your consideration of me for this position. I assure you I will have Delaire’s best interest in mind if chosen.

George DankoBrenda Moss

BRENDA MOSS

I grew up in Rochester, NY and have a BFA in Design. The scope of my work includes both residential and commercial projects in Florida and New York.

My husband Lee and I have been coming to Delaire over 30 years- first as one up and two down visiting our parents, 8 years as a legacy member and we purchased our home on Live Oak 7 years ago.

• As an ASID qualified designer I bring my 35+years of professional experience to Our club.

• I will bring a watchful eye to the homes and grounds.

• When I am involved in a project my total commitment is there.

• This is our home and I want to be part of maintaining its excellence.

GEORGE DANKO

My wife Nancy and I are both retired with two grown sons. We divide our time between South Florida and Scotland.

I am a graduate Electrical Engineering from Drexel University with extensive financial training from Northwestern Kellogg School of Business, Northeastern University and the American Management Association. For the majority of my career I was a senior corporate executive responsible for managing multibillion-dollar, global operations along with strategic planning and mergers and acquisitions for a number of large corporations, such as Johnson Controls, Tektronix, Pentair, General Electric and Best Buy. As a second career, I managed two venture capital funds; one was focused on early stage investments in health care technology and the other in high technology consumer electronics.

As for relevant POA experience, I served on the POA board for the Oaks of Boca Raton as president, vice president and treasurer. I was on the first elected POA board which successfully transitioned from developer control to the homeowners. We were able to negotiate more favorable terms with our property management firm, initiate upgrades to our restaurant, fitness facility and clubhouse all without assessments or fee increases. We also changed banking relationships to improve service and reduce cost and established several committees to encourage community involvement.

DEBBIE SEIDEL

Why are you running for the POA?

To be part of the solution, to help effect change and to keep Delaire a platinum property.

What do you think best qualifies you to be part of the POA?

I have been president of Cisero Family Properties LLC for 15 years. On a daily basis I deal with tenants one-on-one, organize building maintenance and deal with city permits and inspectors.

What do you perceive as the most important role of the POA and what are the most challenging issues that you will face in fulfilling that role?

The most important role in the POA is to keep Delaire up to its rightful standard and to do so in a manner that serves the entire community.

GAIL GERZOF

We at Delaire are lucky to have so many members who are willing to share their previous training and experience for the benefit of the club. I hope to join their ranks.

I graduated with a BA from Boston College and worked in Newton City government for 15 years. I went on to earn certificates in City Planning from both Harvard and Tufts University. My area of expertise was in the planning, construction, and maintenance of public spaces. I was responsible for writing Federal grants, contract negotiations, and oversight. I worked with civil engineers on thoroughfares, parking lots, traffic pattern design, curb cuts, handicap accessibility, and underground conduits for storm drainage control. As a result, I acquired experience in waterfront design (hardscape and landscape) in compliance with both State and Federal regulations.

In retirement, that experience led me to own and manage a privately held real estate portfolio. I believe my professional skills would be an asset to the POA Board.
