The Wisconsin shepherd Fall 20112

I sure hope you didn’t miss them! The Wisconsin State Fair and the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. The State Fair was a fabulous event with temperatures that we usually only dream of in August. We are grateful to the fair for the enhancements we were able to make to the Wisconsin Wool Works booth. The changes did exactly what we had hoped they would. More people shopping AND buying. Thanks to everyone who was involved in making the changes possible and those who worked the booth for the best 11 days of summer. In addition, there were new educational features in the Sheep Barn to draw fairgoers to our little corner of the world.

The festival was also graced with fabulous weather and count-less opportunities to learn, show, shop and eat. Again there is just no way to say a proper thank you to those who volunteer hundreds of hours to make it all possible. It is truly a remarkable event. And if you were a visitor, our thanks go out to you also.

Congratulations to the youth

who received scholarships and to the youth who participated in the skill-a-thon and all of those who exhibited their sheep at the state fair and festival.

Please, don’t forget that we have the Wisconsin Bred Ewe sale coming up on November 5th in Janesville. All of the information, including entry forms can be found on our website. Consignors and bidders are needed. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I want to sincerely thank those who are working to keep this great tradition going.

Your WSBC Board of Directors has been working like many energizer bunnies. They, along with Bob & Carol Black heading up the Wool Works and Festival, and Jill Alf holding us all together, have made this an unbelievable year.

Just one more thing: On behalf of the board and over 200 members throughout Wisconsin and across the Upper Midwest, I want to invite you to join the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative! Come have fun with

us as we strive to make each year better for everyone involved in the sheep, wool and fiber industries. We truly do have fun working together, and getting to know new people with similar interests. And if you would be interested in serving on the board, please let Jill know so she can put you on the ballot for next year. The more hands we have, the more we can do.

See you at the Bred Ewe Sale!Sincerely,Sue RupnowPresident, Wisconsin Sheep

The Spindle & Dyepot Guild, the Greater Milwaukee Knitters Guild, along with volunteers working at the Wool Works booth, provided ongoing demonstrations of traditional fiber arts, such as knitting, spinning and weaving. In an effort to grow the educational experience for fairgoers, the state fair scheduled four-a-day demonstrations of sheep shearing by David Kier during the open sheep shows. The shearing drew instant crowds and was reported to be one of the top ten things people came to the fair to see.

Over fifty separate businesses and fiber artists were represented in the Wisconsin Wool Works! this year. Anyone interested in consigning should contact Carol Black at 920 623-3536 or email her at [email protected].

Calvin reilly, Shullsburg, WI, took the overall Champion honors and a check for $500 in the 2011 Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival Market Lamb Show with his 148 pound Crossbred lamb. over ninety lambs competed in the show under judge Kalen Poe.

Come to a Eweniversity! The University of Wisconsin-Extension will hold a 6-week educational program for commercial sheep production from mid-February to March. The pilot course will be held one weekday evening per week from 6:00-9:00 pm at the Iowa County Health and Human Services Building in Dodgeville (final dates will be determined soon). Additional courses may be held in other parts of Wisconsin in future years. The course will cover topics related to commercial sheep production, including breed selection, animal health, lambing management, flock nutrition, marketing opportunities, and economic analysis. This hands-on course will include a farm visit and practical exercises for new

and experienced shepherds. In addition to the 6-week program, students will be invited to summer follow-up meetings at sheep production facilities, such as pasture walks and processing facilities.

The course will be limited to 25 participants. A registration fee of $65 will be charged if registered by February 10. After this date, registration will be accepted for a fee of $80. Course details will be posted by November 1 on the following websites: http://fyi.uwex.edu/wisheepandgoat/ and http://iowa.uwex.edu/ For more information, contact Claire Mikolayunas at [email protected] or 608-890-3802 or Gene Schreifer at [email protected].

On November 5th, the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative will re-establish a 58 year old tradition by hosting the Bred Ewe Sale in Janesville. A shortage of entries resulted in the cancellation of the 2010 sale but the sale organizers are optimistic that the number and quality of entries for this year will result in a strong sale.

The goal of the Bred Ewe Sale since its conception has been to provide a venue for Co-op members to market their sheep. A special focus has been on buyers, especially youth, who want to establish, grow, or improve their breeding programs. To encourage breeders to consign, commission charges have been lowered and fees on no sales eliminated. At the time of writing this article, entries are still over a week from deadline and cannot be guaranteed, but contacts made indicate a renewed interest.

The strength of the present lamb market has had a significant impact on consignment sales. When a lamb can bring over two hundred and fifty dollars at market, it is a financial disadvantage to sell that same animal for even three hundred dollars at a sale

where commission and other sale expenses are incurred. Buyers need to expect to pay more than in our previous sales where the sale averages have been around three hundred dollars. Buyers at most sales have recognized the increased value and are bidding higher. Realistically, a bred ewe with twins, bought for five hundred dollars can return her value in her first year even if the lambs are marketed. If that same ewe produces twin ewe lambs that stay in your flock as breeding stock or your fair market lambs, her value is much higher. This is an opportunity to add two generations of quality genetics as many of these ewes are bred to the consignor’s best sires. Consignors have been asked to share their better genetics. Some plan to consign animals from their show flocks and others have talked of parting with animals that they could easily retain in their flocks. The last important element in maintaining the Bred Ewe Sale as a viable venue is the need for buyers who will attend and take advantage of the value being offered.

The sale committee considered changing to an on-line sale but

felt a traditional auction was still the best venue. However, they did decide to allow consignors to include pictures of their entries if they wanted. These pictures, along with all entry information will be available for viewing at www.wisbc.com. Anyone wanting a printed copy of the sale offering should request one from Executive Secretary, Jill Alf, 7811 Consolidated Rd., Edgerton, WI 53534 or 608-868-2505. Anyone who cannot attend the sale, but would like to submit a mail bid should contact Jill Alf or Steve Bingen, Sale Committee Chairman at 262-388-3324.

The sale is held at the Rock County Fair Grounds in Janesville, WI. A show to establish a sale order will commence at 9:00. At 11:00 we will hold a youth judging contest with prizes for winners. Sale time is 1:00

2011 Midwest Shetland Sheep Breeders Association Annual Show Results

Theresa Gygi's first place Shetland ram lamb, under the Son Velour, went on to capture the reserve Champion ram ribbon at the MSSBA show in Jefferson in September. From Greencastle, IN, Gygi and her family have been long-time supporters of the annual event that draws Shetland exhibitors from five states.

Karen Valley, Negaunee, MI, brought out the reserve Champion Shetland ewe, yearling Winter Sky Marrakech, shown here with uK Judges Kate Sharp and Alan hill. Valley's entry also took the Best Fleece on hoof honors at the Midwest Shetland Sheep Breeders Association annual show at Jefferson.

Kelly K. Bartels, Monroe, WI took Grand Champion and Supreme Champion honors at the MSSBA show with her Shetland Senior ewe, SheltrgPines Salicional. The ewe also helped Bartels take home the Best Small Flock ribbon.

Lori Stephenson, oconomowoc, WI, brought out her Senior ram, Firth of Fifth Avyt, at the 2011 Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival and captured both the Champion ram and Supreme reserve Champion ram ribbons. over 120 Shetlands from across the upper Midwest competed in the record-setting turnout at Jefferson.

The youngest showman in the MSSBA ring was five year old Clara Snow from oconomowoc, who, when asked by Judge Kate Sharp how she trained her sheep, answered “She follows my corn” and lifted her shirt to show the judge and the audience a bag of corn hang-ing from her belt!

RECORD ENTRIES FOR 2011 FLEECE SHOWThe 2011 Fleece Show was a

success in many ways. 145 fleeces were entered by exhibitors from states that included Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota and Iowa, and Illinois. A simplified registration process for fleeces included all pertinent information being computerized, which we hope will make registration even smoother next year. We also accepted fleeces for entry on Friday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm and took in about half the total fleeces giving us a head start on setting up for the show as well as a far more relaxed atmosphere on Saturday morning.

Our fleece judge for the second year was Letty Klein from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her judging was done in front of an audience of up to 40 people, who appreciated her balance of wide knowledge and experience, as well her willingness to answer audience questions, and even be part of the judging on occasion. Thank you so much Letty!

The second part of the fleece show is the sale. As soon as the show is over our volunteers remove any fleeces that exhibitors do not want to enter in the sale, arrange the fleeces that are for sale, get a Silent Auction form taped on

each and then find enough pens! We also tried a different way of getting each registered buyer paired with a volunteer to go and pick up any of their winning bid fleeces, which was appreciated by the buyers.

We had a truly great volunteer group this year: a balance of experienced and new people who worked hard and really shared in making the show go smoothly. This included one exhibitor who asked to volunteer on Saturday and came back again for Sunday.

Calm returns on Sunday! Fleeces that did not sell in the Silent Auction are for sale at the

price that the individual exhibitors have placed on their fleeces, and buyers come in up until 3:30 in the afternoon. This year a Cormo fleece that won Reserve Champion in Division 1 and exhibited by Jill Johnson was the highest priced fleece in the sale, and sold for $155. The total fleece sales were $2,887.65, and the best thing was that all were either sold or picked up by their owners.

Volunteers truly are the wheels which make the Jefferson experience what it has grown to be. The 2011 Fleece show this year had a mix of nine experienced and new volunteers. Everyone

worked well together, learned a lot, had a good time, and specially appreciated our computer expert. As Superintendent, I cannot thank them enough.

Our winners included the following:
