May and June are host to two popular special days… Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Every year

there is a certain amount of tension over the realities of the disparity of different people’s experience and what those days and those terms may mean.

The terms themselves have the capacity of evoking feelings of ecstasy or deep woundedness. There are those that find these titles and terms extremely beneficial and others an enormous road-block. We learn to ask questions and review presuppositions for living with disparity between expectations and experience.

As a father, while I have tried my best, my children still only have images of a dad who has tried to be a good father AND a dad who has not always been perfect. I have asked them over the years to never use their broken, tarnished, imperfect father to define what they understand God to be. Even when I say, “I love you!”, I’ve encouraged them to define love by God’s character, not mine.

Jesus once said, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.” [John 14:27] Jesus didn’t throw away the term “peace”, He simply reminded the disciples that they could not look to the world for that peace or its definition, they would have to allow Him to define it.

The more my children get to know the God in whose image I was created, the more they under-stand where I reflected the wonderful love of God and where I have failed. God would always be the one who would define and demonstrate God’s qualities perfectly. Take time to go to the scriptures and discover the richness of looking at the world and life through the lens of the Bible rather than looking at the Bible through the narrow lens of our experience. Join a small group or Sunday School class to explore together the wonders of God’s love, grace, peace, hope, joy…

Pastor Al Smith

Do you have a passion for helping others? Do you want to be a better spouse, child, parent, sibling, friend or coworker? Do you desire to be a better supervisor, manager, or leader? Are you wondering how you can make that happen? The 2018 Global Leadership Summit may be just what YOU are looking for!

Church of the Good Shepherd is proud to announce we will be serving as a host site for the summit on August 9th and 10th. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from some of the best leaders in the world today. Stop by the information table in the Gathering Area to get more information and registration forms with our church’s code for special pricing. To learn more, summit information can be found at www.willowcreek.com. Please do NOT register there without our church’s code or you will pay approxi-mately $100 more than needed. Children and Family Ministry May 2018

MAY 2018 Page 3

It’s hard to believe we are already in May! As summer is quickly approaching, please be keeping our Children and Family Ministry in your prayers. God is leading us to great things but with great things, we need faithful servants to help us plan and execute. Next month, we will unveil some of those plans and hope that you will come on board by praying and possibly helping put these plans into action. As we look to our Sunday School ministry, we will need some additional help this summer as some of our faithful volunteers take some time off to vacation or just recharge. If you are interested, please sign up at the CFM table!

The #1 goal of Children’s Ministry is relationship building. Kids will learn about the love of God best through the relationship they build with you. What you model and how you care is often much more important than the words you say or lessons you teach in winning a child for Christ. That is the ultimate goal; teaching kids who fall so deeply in love with Jesus that their whole life if forever changed!

If you would like to get involved with our Children and Family ministry, summer is the perfect time to test the waters to find out if Children’s Ministry is right for you! Would love to have you as a part of the team!

Abbie Burton

Director of Children and Family Ministries

Children and Family Ministry Calendar:

May 5: Family Pictures Opportunity (at COGS) 11am-7pm (See Children and Family announcements in the bulletin for more information)

May 6: Mary and Martha (Begin in Traditional) 9:45– Parenting Workshop (LBH)

May 13: Mother’s Day Lydia (Begin in Traditional)

May 20: Paul & Silas (Start in Traditional) Parenting Workshop at 9:45 in LBH

May 27: Memorial Day weekend Paul & the Philippians (Start in Traditional)

Parenting Workshop

Parenting is one of God’s greatest gifts, life’s greatest joys, and a parent’s

greatest responsibility. However, it’s tempting to parent instinctively and reactively rather than being proactive in raising up our kids as committed, loving, Christ-followers. Join Abbie Burton and Connor Felty for a three week parenting workshop based on Deuteronomy 6—an important Bible passage defining the significant role parents play in developing their children’s faith. The remaining workshops

will occur during the 9:45 Sunday School hour in Larry Berger Hall on Sunday, May 6th and May 20, with guest speaker, Jen Liedtka, on May 6th. Sign up on the CFM table if interested in attending. If you can’t make all 3, it’s okay. Come when you can!
