Editorial February 2011

You can read on p 3 that Great Chalfont Manor garden will be open on Feb 13th, especially for its wonderful display of snowdrops.

In my garden a day or two ago, a few tufts were just showing, mere green spikes with a glimmer of white. Today, a sunny morning, one or two heads have bent over, and the flowers are starting to open.

Although they are so much loved, and so widespread today, snowdrops may not be native to Britain but have been introduced as a garden flower from the continent. There is little reference to them earlier than the eighteenth century – and Shakespeare never names them, though he loved flowers, referring more than once to primroses, violets and daffodils. Yet there are wild colonies now, and they may have been known much earlier. Their pure whiteness has long been associated by the Catholic Church as a symbol of Candlemas, the feast of the purification of the Virgin Mary, which falls on February 2nd, and some of the best known colonies are on the sites of old monasteries and nunneries.

This information, and much more, can be found in Richard Mabey’s wonderful Flora Britannica, where he also says “Wiltshire could well claim to be the top snowdrop county in England.”

I can find surprisingly few poems about snowdrops, but in Seamus Heaney’s moving poem Mid Term Break, in which he remembers the death of his young brother who was hit by a car, he writes, Snowdrops And candles soothed the bedside . . . another association of the flower with youth and innocence.

Please see the note on p 10, about the list of Village Organisations.

3 News from Dorothy House

Drop in to Great ChalfieldThe 2011 Dorothy House open gardens seasons starts this month, when the magnificent displays of snowdrops at Great Chalfield Manor, near Holt, will be open to visitors. The grounds of the National Trust-owned Jacobean manor house will be open from 2-4pm on Sunday 13 February. The carpets of snowdrops are a truly wonderful sight – and a promise that spring is on its way. For further details, visit www.dorothyhouse.co.uk or call 01225 721480. If you are interested in opening your garden – large or small – for the hospice this year, please call us on the number above. We can help with publicity and provide support on the day, so do get in touch if you would like to be involved.

Community spiritWe’re often asked how we manage to look after so many people – about 700 patients and their families at any one time – when our building here in Winsley has just 10 in-patient beds. The answer is that Dorothy House was originally set up to serve its local community in the community, and most of our care still takes place in our patients’ own homes. Our specialist nurses and Hospice@Home carers look after patients across our 700-square-mile catchment area, with out-patient and day patient services provided at Winsley and in our two outreach centres in Chippenham and Midsomer Norton. If your club, group or school would like to find out more about the work of the hospice, we would be delighted to provide a speaker. Just get in touch with the fundraising department on 01225 721480.

Best foot forwardThe Dorothy House Midnight Walk will be taking place in Bath on Saturday 10 September. The event is open to women aged 16 or over – check the website to find out how to sign up for this fantastic fundraising event.

School’S Spot

January is usually thought of as a quiet time in the school year. Not for Winsley School – we have been fighting the winter blues with our dancing. We held a Dance Week in which all the children had workshops in different styles of dance: Street Dance, Hip Hop, Rock n Roll, Salsa & Latin, Freestyle and Disco. These sessions were “bought” with the Sainsbury’s Active Kids vouchers which the school and wider community collected last year. We’d like to say a big thank you to Weaver readers who handed any of these in to the school. The children really appreciated the experience. They tried out some of their new skills at the school disco the following week.

Our Year 4, 5 & 6 Dance Club members have been busy rehearsing a dance for the West Wiltshire Schools Dance Festival. Their performance will be on 17 February at Bath Forum, a great opportunity for them to perform in front of a live audience at a professional venue.

We have been lucky in having Tag Rugby coaching from Bath Rugby professionals this term. One afternoon we had a visit from two of the team members, Josh Ovens and Ross Batty, who signed autographs and spoke to the children.

Badgers Class went to London for the day to visit the Imperial War Museum as part of their study of the Second World War. They have also been cooking using war-time rations and learning to knit.

In case all this sounds like too much fun, it must be said that the children have also found time to do some English, maths and science!

Film Night

ROMAN HOLIDAY

Roman Holiday is a cinematic treasure, and essential viewing by anyone who loves great romantic comedies, classic films, William Wyler,

Gregory Peck, and especially, anyone who loves Audrey Hepburn. It's a near perfect story, with a beautiful ending, and every bit the modern fairy tale it sets out to be. As the years go by, Roman Holiday remains

ageless, a true timeless classic.

Wiltshire Police have written to say they have made plans to save £15 million pounds over the next 4 years to meet thecuts in government funding. They are likely to lose 150 police officer posts and up to 200 police staff posts.

The chairman of the Wiltshire Police Authority is conducting a public consultation about the plans which have been made to meet the financial constraints. The plans involve a wide ranging thorough review of the organisation of all aspects of policing in Wiltshire but aim to ensure that frontline officers maintain regular patrols and maintain public safety.

The Authority is asking all members of the public to answer a simple questionnaire to give their view on the priorities that should be given to the many policing functions in order to maximise efficiency and keep police officers on the streets. The questionnaire can be completed on line on the website www.wiltshire-pa.gov.uk. Those Winsley residents unable to go on-line can obtain a hard copy from the Co-op shop in Tyning Road which can be posted to the WPA.

The questionnaire takes only 5-10 minutes to complete and the deadline for responses is 11th February. Please take a few minutes to help keep our village safe.

Whist Drive

Winsley Bowls Club have had Whist Drives during the Winter months for many years. We are still enjoying a friendly game

of cards and a cup of tea in the pavilion, and it is open to non-bowlers as well.

The only change is, as of January 2011 we start at 2pm, instead of 7.30pm, as it is a better time to travel, when there

is a chance of snow and ice.

Looking forward to seeing you at one of our Whist Drives. The dates until the green opens for Bowls will be:

2011 marks 25 years of singing for Bradford Choral Society, which was founded in the autumn of 1986 as a community choir for the town and surrounding area. Choir members worked very hard at the end of last year, with not only our traditional Christmas concert in Holy Trinity Church, but also three lots of carol singing in the streets of Bradford. We trudged through the snow to sing in The Shambles on December 18th and were delighted to raise £98 for Julian House, Bath’s charity for the homeless.

Our next major concert will be a performance of Bach’s St John Passion on May 14th in Holy Trinity Church, Bradford. This is a suitably ambitious undertaking for our anniversary year, with

professional soloists and a small orchestra. Rehearsals have already begun, but new members are always welcome in all parts and we’re very happy for potential singers to come along and try us out before fully committing themselves. Subscriptions are £30 per term; there is no audition. We meet on Wednesday evenings, 7-15pm for 7-30pm start, in the United Church Hall.

Bradford Choral prides itself in being a very friendly and sociable choir. We have several members from Winsley and would be delighted to welcome even more.

Fancy a Bracing Walk? Come Rambling with the ‘West Wilts’

16

As with so many activities over the lengthy pre-Christmas cold snap, our planned list of walks could hardly expect to remain unscathed. In the event the Westonbirt and Westbury White Horse outings were sensibly called off. Hopefully, Jack Frost has had his fill of mischief-making for this winter. We look forward to the February programme progressing unhindered – but don’t hold your breath! As a footnote the ‘Banksy’s Art’ ramble around Clifton was supported by some 18 members (including 2 new folk from Winsley) who had great fun tracking down some 50 examples of the elusive Banksy’s distinctive street art.

The New Year has moved on at quite a pace and it isn’t long now until spring is upon us! As the weather starts to warm and with it the soil temperature, we can start thinking about planting out some early veggies such as carrots, onions

and radishes for a late spring and early summer harvest. This will be our first year of growing fruit and vegetables with our new pro-grower Kate. Along with planting out, much effort will be put into establishing composting systems that will hopefully reduce the amount wastage we have from the shop and café, any scraps will be put to good use and help us reduce our carbon footprint!

In January we sent out a questionnaire via our newsletter and website. We have had a brilliant response to that with well over one hundred people completing it. There was a lot of great feedback and suggestions, some of which we knew about and some of which we didn’t which we found very helpful. Thanks to all those who took the time to take part. We have compiled our “to-do” list for 2011 and have already started ticking some off!

Our shop and café have already started planning the for coming bounty of home grown fruit and vegetables with spring menu’s and special offers as well as plenty of recipe cards to help everyone make the most out of their 5-a-day!

Don’t forget to keep up to date with news and special offers by signing up to our newsletter!

Best wishes from all at Hartley farm.
