Decoding the Past: Secrets of Kabbalah Documentary

Film & Program with Rabbi & Rebbetzin Gordon -

Sunday, October 9 at 11:30am. An ancient, inspirational form

of Jewish mysticism, Kabbalah has now reached cult-like

popularity throughout the world. What is behind the new-

found fascination with this sacred body of wisdom? This His-

tory Channel documentary traces Kabbalah from its spiritual

foundations to its present-day high glamour incarnation and

debunks the myths surrounding this awe inspiring, ancient

philosophy. Rabbi and Rebbetzin Gordon will address what

our sages convey about Kabbalah and its history within Juda-

ism. They will also speak to how a version of Kabbalah has

become viewed as trendy by various Jewish and non-Jewish

celebrities, practical applications of Kabbalistic thinking to-

day, and how it is explained and learned according to Jewish

tradition.

Enjoy some delicious refreshments while learning about the

symbolism of food according to Kabbalah. There is a $5 sug-

gested donation for this program. Everyone who RSVPs will

be entered in a raffle to win some wonderful prizes. For more

information and to RSVP please contact Taliah Berger at 916

-541-3720 or [email protected].

Artist Exhibition: Art and Soul with Rabbi Shula Stevens

Calmann - Sunday, October 16 at 2pm. Ar tist Reception

and Fascinating Program with Judaica Renaissance Woman

Combining fine art and the Jewish spiritual tradition

Rabbi Calmann’s love of painting grew out of her love of

books. At Mills College, where she earned a degree in Book

Arts, Shula first became aware of the possibilities for using

art to illuminate her spiritual tradition. Studying for the rab-

binate a few years later, she encountered Dr. Jo Milgrom,

who taught a class called “Visual Midrash” – a perfect term

and inspiration for the direction her art was taking.

Jewish mystical tradition teaches that the Hebrew Alef-Bet is

G-d’s “toolbox” for both creating and constantly renewing

the Universe. Rabbi Calmann has a great love and reverence

for Hebrew, and these beautiful letters, along with the words

and texts they form are always the starting point in her crea-

tive process. She deeply believes that unlimited creative flow

waits to be discovered in them, along with endless opportuni-

ties for connecting with the Divine. For more information on

Rabbi Shula, visit her webpage at

www.rabbishulastevens.net.The exhibit runs through October

27 and may be viewed during regular KOH Library and Cul-

tural Center hours or by appointment. Individualized commis-

sioned pieces are available to order and exhibited art work is

priced for sale.

Jews and Finance with guest speaker, Steven Rosenblum -

Sunday, October 30 at 2pm. Steven Rosenblum returns to

KOH to once again educate, inspire and lead us in a stimulat-

ing discussion. Please join us as Steve discusses the im-

portant, bold and controversial topic of Jews and Finance. He

will trace the beginning of Jews as “money lenders” starting

in the Middle Ages to the present and how that activity sets

the stage for generational Anti-Semitism and more recent

Anti-Israel sentiment. Steven will demonstrate how myth and

ritual perpetuate this view. He will also reveal his Hall of

Shame and Hall of Fame. Finally, Steven will conclude his

talk but placing the contributions of Jews in finance in the

context of Jewish exceptionalism, tzedakah and suggest im-

plications for both the religion and mankind.

This program is open to the entire community. RSVPs are

appreciated but are not necessary to attend. There is a $5 sug-

gested donation. For more information and to RSVP contact

Taliah Berger, KOH Program Director at 916-541-3720 or
