Becoming one of the top booked excursions, zipline is a must do

for any visitor looking for adventure on the island of Maui! Feel

of the stunning West Maui Mountains, ocean, and neighboring

islands. Starting April 1st, the Kapalua Ziplines will have multiple

line offerings. Even with my fear of heights I absolutely loved

this tour, the guides make guests feel like Ohana from the very

start, so I quickly became comfortable.

follow were strictly sacred and of great importance for it was critical that the body

be carefully prepared for the “after-life”. Friends and relatives would weep for long

periods of time and chant out loud in eulogy. Relatives at times would cut pieces of

hair from the deceased and prepare adornments for them to wear as a way to

remember. At times, many surviving relatives would cut deep lines in their own skin

or puncture holes in their body to create scars and pain, for it was thought that these would be reminders to

them in the future of their love for their deceased relative. One documented event happened in early 1800

when King Kamehameha III (Liholioho) died, his wife Queen Kamamalu decided to carve a deep line and

tattooed her tongue. When asked about her pain, she responded, “The pain is indeed great, but the pain of

my grief is greater.”

Corpses were treated with respectful ceremony in preparation for internment, as it was believed that the

bones (iwi) of the dead held great mana (divine power) that contributed to the natural order of life and could

benefit whomever possessed the remains. Some of the Hawaiian Royalty were buried in secret caves only to

be known by their ancestors and the whereabouts were secret and its location were guarded and protected

petitioned for the remains to be relocated in proper burial and not on display. Their petition was denied and

the remains stayed on display until one morning... as workers of the Bishop Museum came to work, they

noticed that the caskets holding the remains of the royalty were gone… disappeared. Stolen? By whom?

Hawaiians everywhere celebrated and it is thought that the bones were taken to a secret cave in Waipi’o

Valley on the Big Island. Finally, home. Where it should be. At Peace.

Personal Note: When I was about 17 or 18 years old and living on O’ahu, I had a friend of pure Hawaiian

Blood who I hung around and played high school football with. The Hawaiian Culture and practice of it was

part of their daily lives. I remembered one day sitting around “talking story” with his Dad and Grand Father.

They asked me questions about my Hawaiian Blood and if I knew whether it passed through the Hawaiian

Dynasty. Both of them continued to ask me questions as to “test me” on my conviction and dedication of

my “true Hawaiian beliefs”. As the discussion got deeper and deeper into our Hawaiian Culture they told me

about a death in their family that happened a long, long time ago. The Grand Father said the following to

me… “We are the protectors of our Royal Deceased (name) We are the 2nd generation assigned to watch

over the secret cave at (location). We tell you this because we believe you will honor its secrecy.” He

mentioned that they are 1 of 5 families that watch over the entrance to a secret cave that holds the remains

of a Royal Family Member. My heart nearly dropped for these 2 men found it in their hearts to tell me this.

I looked at my friend in awe and for many years thereafter, we talked about it in secrecy. It’s been a few

years since I’ve seen this friend of mine since moving to Maui from O’ahu and I’m now wondering that it

must be HIS generation that watches over this secret burial site-cave of his royal ancestor. “A secret that I

am so honored to hold”.

by surviving relatives. This position of “guard” was considered an honor and

many of the protected sights were watched over by the “guards” for many

years, sometimes generations. Sacred burial caves have been found on every

Hawaiian Island. Unfortunately, before some were catalogued, they were

discovered earlier and some looted. Many secret Hawaiian Burial Caves still

exist today in secrecy throughout Hawai’i. Many Hawaiians believe that

places like I’ao Valley (Maui), Mokapu Island (O’ahu), Waipi’o Valley (Big

Island), and Kapalua (Maui) are just a few. One incident to mention

happened on O’ahu’s Bishop Museum in February 1994. The casket holding

the remains of King Liloa of the Big Island and his grandson Lonoikamakahiki

were on display. Many Hawaiians were very unhappy about this and
