THE WAY THINGS WEREP R E F E R R E D A I R P A R T S 2 0 1 5
Maybe it’s because I can go by “Great grandad” now, but there’s something about the day we live in that makes me miss aspects of “the way things
were.” Life in general was simpler back when the airplanes in this calendar were the latest and greatest, but I’m thinking of more than that. Stuff like when “yes” was “yes” and “no” was “no.” And when men had a few guns for hunting instead of an arsenal to protect their families against the growing lawlessness in our land. But let me get something straight right here. Priority Air Charter runs freight with three Pilatus PC-12s and three Cessna 208B Grand Caravans. A good month provides some busy times in the shop but I comment occasionally on how different it would be if they operated Twin Beechs and DC-3’s - airplanes from my time. Mags, spark plugs, oil leaks, vibration related structural cracks and more were a lot different than the present changing of a few light bulbs and gyros between inspections on these turbines! And I remember sitting in the jump seat of the turbine DC-3 that Brian flies for Samaritan’s Purse in East Africa. We were deep into South Sudan, and his pre-takeoff briefing concluded with, “and if we lose one after V2 we’ll secure it and go to Loki.” I was astounded. It was over 100 degrees and Lokichoggio, Kenya was hundreds of miles away. My mind defaulted to “my days” of worry about cylinder head and oil temps in such a setting, and wondering if the remaining radial would endure such brutality. After
we were squared away in cruise I asked Brian, “You’re saying that if we lose one here, you’ll just shut it down and go all the way to Loki on one?” He grinned at my dated fears and said, “Dad, it’s a turbine!” Oh!! The turbine DC-3 is the best of the old and the best of the new. Preferred is committed to supporting those in missionary work around the world, and to buying and refurbishing more for various applications. Yes, while we live in a world of sophisticated and high flying aircraft that fit our day and are very much needed, there really is something of value in the old! So what’s my point? Our family embraces a blending of the old and the new in other important areas too. There is the message of the Gospel – the Good News of God’s love for mankind and of the incredible cost He paid so that we can know Him and the full and rich life we were created to enjoy. The life that only comes through His Son, Jesus, our Savior. That is “old” in one way and “new every day” in another. And there’s more. There are about 300 million people in nearly 1900 people groups around the world who don’t have one word of the scriptures in their heart language. But something is happening and it’s even better than putting PT-6’s on a DC-3! I’m speaking of the incredible modern technology that now accelerates Bible translation at a rate that was unthinkable even a few years ago. We find deep satisfaction in supporting Bible translation and similar efforts that help make God’s love known to the ends of the earth. The need is great and it really does matter. That’s why Brian and Sandi are willing
to leave their children and grandchildren to go serve in Africa. It’s not for the adventure. Please contact us if you would like to know more. Until next year – enjoy the calendar and “thank you” for your patronage. We appreciate you!

less civilian. The two survivors are at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, and at PIMA, in Tucson, AZ.
