WACOM President’s Message - February 2013

According to Phil, winter is coming to a CLOSE SOON!

But until Spring arrives we still have some efforts/opportunities facing us . THIS WEEK starting Thursday

WACOM again provides RADIOACTIVITY to the Crown Center Mall & the Washington Sportsman's

Show. This effort has been even provided a special call sign W3C. Additionally the Special Event Station info

has been published internationally by CQ magazine and The ARRL, so the world is listening for us.

Rarely does a fun hobby like amateur Radio, also provide such a Community Service. While it may appear

like a Ham Radio promotional event, it truly is also an Emergency Preparedness Drill. Traditionally we just

drive over our club Tower Trailer ...yes we actually have a trailer with a crank-up extendable tower, mount

several specialized antennas ...and run some cables into the mall. This year while our trailer out for refurbish-

ment, we 'get to ' do what we hams do well, improvise ( PLAN B).

We will be utilizing two new antenna systems, both acquired..with the County's assistance from the FEDs.

One is quite different , only a hint ...it is motorized. I suggest you join us at the mall to check out this novel

approach. We will have two HF stations "Working the World" and the entire United States. And we have a

position open, for you to operate. If it has been a while since you have graced the airwaves with your voice

or digital pulses ( CW ), this is a great opportunity , as we will be there setting up from Thursday at 1 PM, un-

til Sunday afternoon about 3 pm. Which means we can utilize more operators. Our goal will be to talk with

more than 100 different countries.

Which brings me to RADIOSPORT... a real word for some the many competitive facets in our hobby. While

active in the US, RDF Radio Direction Finding is substantially more popular in Europe and ASIA.

Fox Hunting ( our name for finding a hidden transmitter) provides both a great practice for locating a trans-

mitter location ( serious applications). Also is can provide a great walk in the woods or through town carting

your portable setup . Many California Fox Hunts are city wide requiring driving with the antennas roof or

window mounted, seeking out to find the 'fox'.

Then we need to make mention the RADIO CONTESTS & AWARDS: worked all states, worked all conti-

nents, worked all Oblasts, and how about worked ALL COUNTIES ! Worked all countries !

So come to the Mall and discover RADIOSPORT.... AT the Washington Sportsman SHOW

See you at the Mall... Thursday - Sunday........

BRITISH VIRGIN

ISLANDS!

The British Virgin Islands are a great destination for a vacation combined with

our favorite hobby. The BVIs (VP2V) are a far rarer location to operate DX than

the USVI (KP2) next door. This article gives some brief facts on the BVI as well

as information on how to operate from that wonderfully tropical location! [Ed]

British Virgin Islands (BVI), is a British overseas territo-

ry located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. The is-

lands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, the remain-

ing islands constitute theU.S. Virgin Islands and the Spanish Vir-

gin Islands.

The British Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda,Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, along with over fifty

other smaller islands and cays. About 15 of the islands are inhabited. The capital, Road Town, is situated on Tortola, the largest is-

land, which is approximately 20 km (12 mi) long and 5 km (3 mi) wide. The islands have a population of about 27,800, of whom

approximately 23,000 live on Tortola.

British Virgin Islanders are classed as British Overseas Territories citizens and since 2002 have had full British citizenship. Alt-

hough the territory is not part of the European Union and not directly subject to EU law, its citizens are deemed to be citizens of the

EU as well.

The Virgin Islands were first settled by the Arawak from South America around 100 BC (though there is some evidence

of Amerindian presence on the islands as far back as 1500 BC). The Arawaks inhabited the islands until the 15th century when they

were displaced by the more aggressive Caribs, a tribe from the Lesser Antilles islands, after whom the Caribbean Sea. The first Eu-

ropean sighting of the Virgin Islands was by Christopher Columbus in 1493 on his second voyage to the Americas. The Spanish

Empire claimed the islands by discovery in the early 16th century, but never settled them. In1672, the English captured Tortola

from the Dutch, and the English annexation of Anegada and Virgin Gorda followed in 1680. Meanwhile, over the period 1672–

1733, the Danish gained control of the nearby islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix (later bought by the United States in

1917).

The British islands were considered principally a strategic possession, but were planted when economic conditions were particularly

favorable. The British introduced sugar cane which was to become the main crop and source of foreign trade, and slaves were

brought from Africa to work on the sugar cane plantations. The islands prospered economically until the middle of the Nineteenth

Century, when a combination of the abolition of slavery in the Territory, a series of disastrous hurricanes, and the growth in

the sugar beet crop in Europe and the United States significantly reduced sugar cane production and led to a period of economic

decline.

The British Virgin Islands were administered variously as part of

the British Leeward Islands or with St. Kitts and Nevis, with an admin-

istrator representing the British Government on the Islands. The island

gained separate colony status in 1960 and became autonomous in

1967. Since the 1960s, the islands have diversified away from their

traditionally agriculture-based economy towards tourism and financial

services, becoming one of the wealthiest areas in the Caribbean.

10

The British Virgin Islands comprise around sixty tropical Caribbean islands, ranging in size from the largest, Tortola 20 km (12 mi)

long and 5 km (3 mi) wide, to tiny uninhabited islets. They are located in theVirgin Islands archipelago, a few miles east of the U.S.

Virgin Islands. The North Atlantic Ocean lies to the north of the islands, and the Caribbean Sea lies to the south. Most of the islands

are volcanic in origin and have a hilly, rugged terrain. Anegada is geologically distinct from the rest of the group and is a flat island

composed of limestone and coral.

The British Virgin Islands enjoy a tropical climate, moderated by trade winds. Temperatures vary little throughout the year. In the

capital,Road Town, typical daily maxima are around 32 °C (89.6 °F) in the summer and 29 °C (84.2 °F) in the winter. Typical daily

minima are around 24 °C (75.2 °F) in the summer and 21 °C (69.8 °F) in the winter. Rainfall averages about 1,150 mm (45.3 in) per

year, higher in the hills and lower on the coast. Rainfall can be quite variable, but the wettest months on average are September to

November and the driest months on average are February and March. Hurricanes occasionally hit the islands, with the hurricane

season running from June to November.

The population of the Islands is around 21,730 in 2003. The majority of the population (83%) are Afro-Caribbean, descended from

the slaves brought to the islands by the British. Other large ethnic groups include those of British and other European origin.

A reader recently e-mailed me: "In the past you told me you started with the Autek RF-1, and later moved to the Palstar ZM-30. I am finally getting around to thinking about purchasing an antenna analyzer, but I am stumped by the choices. In order of increasing purchase price this is what I’ve turned up: * Autek RF-1 - $139.95 * Autek RF-5 - $229.95 * Rig Expert AA-54 – $340.00 * Palstar ZM-30 $399.99 * W4RT Electronics MiniVNA $399.99 * Rig Expert AA-230PRO $690.00 * Timewave Technology TZ-900S $899.99 "How does one decide? Where does one go to find out the differences? Other than asking a fellow ham, how does one find out which one is the best antenna analyzer without paying an arm and a leg (unless the feature(s) so purchased are deemed worth the cost)? "Thanks! 73" When I replied, I noted that he had actually missed several other good choices: * Autek VA1 – $199. * MFJ 259B - $240. * YouKits FG-01 – $250. * Comet CAA500 – $450. The Autek VA1 is actually the antenna analyzer that I first purchased. The MFJ 259B is arguably the most popular antenna analyzer on the market. MFJ has several other models with different feature sets. The YouKits FG-01 is a very cute, little analyzer with a small graphical display. It is made in China and sold in the U.S. by TenTec. So, how do you choose just one from this list? Well, I think the first thing that you have to ask yourself is how you’re going to use the ana-lyzer. If all you’re going to do is to check the SWR of your HF dipoles, then buy the Autek RF-1. It’s the least expensive unit, is reasonably accurate, and is small and lightweight, making it easy to use outside where your antennas are located. If you want to do some more serious frequency analysis, then you should be looking at the W4RT miniVNA or, if you have more cash, the Timewave TZ-900s. These instruments can help you do a lot more in-depth analysis of your antenna system. The software for the miniVNA, for example, will easily plot the SWR of a multi-band vertical antenna from 3 – 33 MHz. Some antenna analyzers do more than just SWR. For example, what sold me first on the Autek VA1 and then on the Palstar was that they also measured reactance. So, you can use the antenna analyzer as an LC meter as well. Palstar also says that you can use the ZM-3 as a low-level signal source. While I have used my Palstar to measure inductance and capacitance, I have yet to use it as a signal source. Next, you need to consider what bands you’ll be using it on. Many antenna analyzers only cover the HF bands. That’s a bummer if you like operating 6m, or like to experiment with VHF/UHF antennas. A friend of mine bought the Palstar antenna analyzer after talking to the com-pany at Dayton. At the time, they said that they were planning to come out with a model that covered 6m, as well as the HF bands. Unfortunately, they never did come out with a 6m version, and he was sorely disappointed. He ended up buying a miniVNA instead. The miniVNA can be used up to 170 MHz right out of the box, and up to 1.5 GHz with an optional extender. Asking your fellow hams about the antenna analyzers they have is actually a good way to figure out what’s best for you. If you ask nicely, they might even let you borrow their analyzers or come over and show you how it works on your antennas. Reading the reviews on eHam is also a good way to gather information before making a purchase like this. You certainly have to take the reviews there with a grain of salt, but if several reviewers mention a particularly good or particularly bad feature of a product, then it’s cer-tainly something worth taking a hard look at. If you’re new to the hobby, starting out small and working your way up might be a good strategy. You could buy one of the less expensive models and get used to how they work, then sell it and make the leap to a more sophisticated unit. The way things are going, you should be able to sell your first antenna analyzer for at least 80% of what you paid for it. The March 2012 QST contains an in-depth review of four analyzers (available online to ARRL members), including the Comet CAA-500, MFJ-266, RigExpert AA-54, and the Youkits FG-01. Each analyzer reviewed had various plusses and minuses. Even if the unit you are consider-ing was not reviewed, the article provides a guide to the kinds of questions you should be asking as you go through the selection process. ============================================================================ When he's not analyzing antennas, Dan, KB6NU blogs about amateur radio at KB6NU.Com, writes and publishes the "No-Nonsense" series of amateur radio license study guides, and just has fun with amateur radio.
