“Convention and the Future” words from State President Pat Cermak

Dear Alpha Delta State Sisters, It is hard to believe that the first year of this biennium is almost over. Much has been accomplished and much remains to be done. Our an-nual Alpha Delta state convention was held March 18-20 at the Akron/Hilton Fairlawn. Friday evening we enjoyed the music of the Boomers and they entertained us with 70s - 80s music while we enjoyed a light dinner.

Saturday was a full day that began with the Executive Board/General Session meeting. During the day members had the opportunity to attend many breakout sessions, the birthday luncheon, a wine and cheese tasting and the President’s Banquet. The Celebration of Life be-gan our Sunday, followed by a tasty brunch. Check the website for con-vention pictures. Our next conven-tion will be March 24-26, 2017.

A special, gigantic THANK YOU goes to all those who made our convention a huge success - volunteers helped with registration, centerpiece set up and removal, greeting members, presid-ing and presenting breakout ses-sions, helping prepare items for convention, chapters donating a basket for the silent auction and all of those who shared hugs and kind words.

We were also privileged to hear the 2015 teacher of the year, Lori Michalec speak at our luncheon. Our International Guest, Nita Scott brought us greetings from Interna-tional and was our keynote speaker at the President’s Banquet.

Dust off your western wear and boots as you pack for Nashville this sum-mer! The DKG Educational Foundation (DKGEF) will sponsor Call Me Country at the world-famous Wildhorse Saloon during the 2016 DKG International Convention. All DKG members and their guests are urged to purchase tickets when registering for the convention, either online (www.dkg.org) or using the registration form found in the Jan./Feb. issue of the DKG News. This three-level historic warehouse has been converted into a 66,000 sq. ft. country music dance hall, restaurant, concert hall, and TV production site. Horse sculptures and murals dominate the décor with many positioned for optimal “selfie” opportunities! The extensive “all-you-can-eat” buffet on levels two and three features award-winning BBQ selections and numerous side dishes.

The first floor features space for performances by a live band and a DJ, as well as line dance instruction for those wanting to kick up their heels. Besides din-ing seating, the second and third floors include cash bars and a variety of entertainment venues ranging from billiards to shuffle board to big screen TVs. Use your visit to the Wildhorse as an opportunity to wander in and out of all the famous clubs and shops located in the area – with a ride home to the Opryland Hotel provided at your convenience.

Now it is time to begin planning for the leadership sessions in June. Two ses-sions are planned and are open to all members and friends. See more details in this issue of “The Voice”.

Soon we are hoping to be able to send information directly to members using Constant Contact. This will mean that all members who have email will receive The Voice directly.

Please spend some time reading the Alpha Delta State Bylaws and send sug-gestions to the Bylaws Committee no later than June 1st.

Plan to attend the International Conven-tion in Nashville, Tennessee the first week in July. Information is available on the DKG.org web site.

The nomination committee is looking for officer candidates, committee chairmen and committee members. New forms are on the state web site. See more details in this issue of The Voice.

All members are responsible for increas-ing your chapter’s membership. Help us grow by asking any female who meets the criteria. Think outside the box - these can be preschool workers, piano teachers, retired teachers, tutors etc. Go to the International website to check the latest criteria. When did you last sponsor a new member?

Your state officers are only a phone call or email away. Please feel free to ask for our help at any time.

Take Care and Carry On.

Consider your talents and special gifts. There will be a place for you. Look in your directory for the committee assignments and the elected positions available at the state level.

Serve in offices and do committee work for your chapter.

Attend state meetings, the convention, and the leadership program opportunities.

There are ten elected positions up for election every other year; 2017 is the next election year. There are at least 60 positions appointed by the president each biennium.

Each elected officer candidate will need to complete the Application Form for Elected Officers (revised this year, and available on the ADS website). Each candidate will need to request that, on her behalf, the Recommen-dation Form for Nominee of Elected Positions be completed. She may ask her chapter members, and other ADS members. These forms are due November 1, 2016. Each women wishing to make known that she is willing and ready to serve the organization on a committee or other appointed position should complete the Application Form for Appointed Positions. These forms are due March 1, 2017. Not completing a form for appointed position does not mean you will not be asked!

The World Fellowship Committee sends thanks to everyone who stopped by our Info Fair display. Many thanks also to those who participated in our breakout session. It is our hope you were able to gain information to share with your chap-ter about World Fellowship.

Each chapter represented at the break-out session was given a booklet of information meant to educate chapter members about World Fellowship. The booklet also pro-vides ideas to contact fellowship recipients and "some old, some new, some tried and true" fundraisers. Par-ticipants took part in a Bingo game based on World Fellowship information. Prizes were awarded and in a game of cover-all, everyone was a winner and received a "goody" bag.

The World Fellowship Committee will post ideas and information on the Alpha Delta State Web Site in the coming months. Awards for donations to World Fellowship will be included in the Presi-dent's information in June. In late October or early November, chapters will receive the names of new World Fellowship recipi-ents.

Thank you to all for your support in the advancement of teaching, worldwide, one learner at a time as We Bloom and Soar as Key Women Educators.

Soaring to a New Endeavor

After 30 years of teaching elementary art in the Oak Hills School District, Beta Nu member, Heidi Hannsen, decided to get serious about a painting career. She took classes as a refresher and joined the Cincinnati Art Club being juried in as a Signature member.

Her first art competition was the Viewpoint Show 2014 from which she received the prize for the best watercolor. Other contests included the Ohio Watercolor Society show and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America show. This second group receives 800 entries each year but selects only 80. It is quite an honor to be selected with your first entries. Entering the Viewpoint 2015 show, Heidi won $1,000.00 for second place overall in this competition. She will again be in the Transparent Watercolor show this summer in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Beta Nu knows more prizes will be coming for Heidi with her watercolor entries or maybe the oil paintings which she began this past fall. In the meantime, Heidi is serving on Beta Nu’s 75th anniversary celebration committee. Our chapter is proud of Heidi’s second career accomplishments and we are looking forward to our 75th event in May.
