Company: San Ramon Valley Physical Therapy

Year founded: 1985

Bishop Ranch Location: BR11

Business Type / Services: Physical Therapy Outpatient Clinic: We provide outpatient rehabilitation services mainly for orthopedic and sports related injuries. Typical clients include people suffering from acute and chronic injuries such as low back pain, tendonitis, sprains/strains, etc. We also work with people following surgical interventions such as broken bones, arthroscopic surgeries, joint replacement, and repair surgeries such as ACL reconstruction and rotator cuff repairs. In addition we utilize Pilates for injury recovery, general conditioning, and health restoration.

Business Approach / Philosophy: At its core, San Ramon Valley Physical Therapy is a business that helps facilitate recovery from a variety of injuries through a patient centered approach. Connecting the mind to the physical body can produce a vastly improved healing process. Our providers spend a significant amount of time with each patient. Each injury is a unique challenge and only if the therapist listens to the patient and methodically works through that injury that successful resolution can be accomplished.

Biggest Challenge in Your Work: Insurance. Health insurance continues to create significant strains on our ability to provide effective patient care.

Favorite Aspect of Your Work: Our patients. Our clients are generally great people who give as much to us as we to them. A physical therapist is a people person and interaction with the patient is the most enjoyable aspect of the job.

Least Favorite Task: Paperwork.

Source(s) of Inspiration: Physical therapy is inspiring in and of itself simply because it is one of the last fields in medicine to still enjoy significant time to interact with the patient. That is what drew me to the field.

What Makes You Excel? When your client is in pain or suffering disability, failure to help is tremendously frustrating. My desire to help as many people as possible is what drives me to excel.

Suggestions for Young Professionals: Try to humanize the job. Get to know your clients and enjoy the unique qualities of each person you interact with.

A Goal You Still Want to Achieve: I’d like to improve the wellness portion of my practice. I would like to have more clients conditioning their bodies and improving their overall health rather than focus our practice so heavily on injury recovery.

Favorite Pastime: Watching sports.

How Do You Handle Stress: Exercise. It’s the greatest way to handle stress. Also, play with my kids. They have a way of melting stress by being playful.

Favorite Vacation Spot: Laguna Beach, California

Favorite East Bay Restaurant: Café Esin.

Favorite Music or Other Form of Art: I hate to admit it, but I still like Rock n’ Roll. Enjoying more classical music these days, however. I also like watching movies.

Is There a Special Cause That You Support? As a general rule I like causes which assist soldiers overseas or who have just returned.

Derek Vandersloot, PT, OCS San Ramon Valley Physical Therapy
