In Passing...HE ORIGINS of All Fools Dayare lost in the mist of time butare thought to lie in the joyfulpagan spring festivals that

celebrated the end of winter. A timeperhaps for letting off steam, playingsilly pranks and generally having fun.Over the centuries the event has becomef i rmly f i xed on 1s t Apr i l and thetradition of playing April Fool tricks haslong been well-established. Nationalnewspapers, television and radio ofteninclude a spoof of one sort or anotherand have sometimes been surprised bythe number of people who have believedwhat they have read, heard or seen – aparticular favourite of mine was bringingin the harvest from Italy’s spaghettitrees. It has not been unknown for theVisitor to play similar tricks, and nota lways in the Apr i l i s sue . I we l lremember the spoof article on the historyof the Bourton and Zeals Tramway, complete with photograph, that appearedin the July 1986 issue and subsequentlybecame ‘fact’ in some of the publicationsfor rail enthusiasts. This year the trickery seems to have

dried up. I can’t recall seeing anythingin the papers that had the slightest hintof foolery, anything that made me stop, have my doubts and smile. But I did seea news release that the papers seeminglydidn’t think sufficiently clever to fooltheir readers. Under the heading ‘Wordsin the Street’ this is what it said. ‘A newscheme by Yeovil in Bloom could seeyour short poem or phrase about whatnature means to you placed around thetrunks of trees in King George Street,Yeov i l o v e r the summer months .Residents in South Somerset are beinginvited to write a short poem or phraseabout what nature means to you. It couldbe about trees, plants, animals or birdsin the landscape that you love. Thewords will then be printed onto paper, cut into strips and then placed aroundthe trunks of the trees in King GeorgeStreet.’

I f the story had appeared in theWestern Daily Press on 1st April wouldyou have believed it? I wouldn’t, but it’sabsolutely true. The closing date forsubmissions is 14th May and all the worksent in will be installed on 1st June. Assomeone who is continually removingstrips of paper from my local roadsidehedgerows and verges (especially afterthe recycling truck has made its weeklyvisit), I’m astounded to find that we arenow being encouraged to have paper putback on to trees. The chairman of theYeovil in Bloom Steering Group, whichis managed and funded by Yeovil TownCounc i l , i s quoted as say ing that‘engaging with our public is what we aredoing’ and that ‘our environment andcommunities will benefit if we all getinvolved’. By sticking bits of paper roundtrees! He must think we are all fools.

ParkrunsSir, As someone who is not knownfor my enthusiasm when it comesto exercise I feel that really I amhardly in a position to comment. However, given the high level ofemotion and furore generated bythe recent announcement fromStoke Gifford Parish Council ofplans to institute a charge forparticipants in the ‘Little StokeParkrun’, I feel entitled to put inmy two-penn’orth worth. It has been interesting to listen

in on conversations, wherepolarised opinions seem directlyrelated to level of exercise enduredby either side. I have used theword ‘endured’ intentionally. Ona daily basis I pass by people ofall ages pounding the streets, whoseem to be in agony as they puffand pant along, sweaty and out ofbreath. I can appreciate the needto stay fit and healthy, and canunderstand that some peoplemight feel more motivated to doso in the company of others, butvery few seem to actively enjoy theexperience. With such long working hours,

my free time is fairly limited andI do prefer to spend it in pursuitof more pleasurable activities, requiring less exertion and

personal discomfort. That said, given that as a nation levels ofobesity are increasing it does makesense for us to be pro-active abouttaking charge of our own health,if for no other reason than thatNHS waiting times for treatmentare now beyond a joke.Parkruns seem to help in

addressing the problem of mentaland physical wellbeing, whilstproviding the added benefit of asocial element for those who seekit. The dilemma is that our publicparks are intended for theenjoyment of all and there will bemany who have hitherto enjoyeda quiet stroll who will feel thattheir space is being invaded byhoards of strangers (I understandthat people travel from far andwide to take part) along with thenoise and disruption this cancause, albeit temporary. Most ofus can tolerate the annualmarathon once a year but theseevents are held on a weekly basis. There is also the consideration thatcash strapped parish and towncouncils face in their responsibilityfor the upkeep and maintenanceof our local parks. There can be nodoubt that such events, in termsof the sheer numbers, will have acost element and this poses thequestion of whether or not preceptsshould be used in this way. In all communities there should

be a degree of give and take.Personally I am not in favour of acharge being imposed as such, butalthough Parkrun is a not-for-profit organisation I think that inusing a valuable community asset,to the possible detriment of otherusers, it would not be beyond therealms of possibility for them toconsider making a contribution insome way. The one-off start-up feefor an event is £3,000 and with61,583 events currently active, according to their website, that isan awful lot of money, not takinginto account the finance providedby sponsors, along with thelucrative marketing opportunities

runner registration provides. I agree that they provide

tremendous support but someone, somewhere, is raking in the cashand small communities, whilstclearly benefiting from the activity, are also bearing the burden. Surelyin the interest of harmony a fewhundred quid to help our localparishes out would not go amiss.Linda Piggott-VijehCombe St Nicholas

Funds DonatedSir, As we start to ‘wind down’the Britannia Carnival Club, Iwould like to extend huge thanksto Jig, David and Tina, whocontinue to attend the site weeklydismantling the cart, tractor andsheds – i t ’ s surpris ing theartwork they have discovered –more than 40 years worth. Manyof you will recall Carts comingout with a vast array of themes -Gypsies, Joseph, Pink Elephants,Sioux Indians, Scooby Doo,Pirates, Fireworks, Brasília etc.More importantly - we have

s t a r t e d t o d i s t r i b u t e o u rmonetary ‘pot’ to many goodcauses and charities.A donation has been made to

The Castle Cary Majorettes, toassist them with purchasing newpom-poms and the residents ofCary Brook have benefited froma very generous gift to refurbishtheir Hairdressing salon. However, the most important

one so far is our donation of£5,000 to the British LungFoundation. This donation is inmemory of two past members –B o b K i n g s t o n a n d N i g e lStrickland. Both gentlemen werelong serving, stalwart membersof the club, who sadly died fromlung disease. I am sure they, likethe rest of our committee andtheir families, would feel proudthat our funds have been donatedto such a worth while cause.Christine StoneSecretaryBritannia Carnival Club

The Future of Antiques in thenew Digital AgeThe antiques business is a thingof the past, but not according toantique expert, Clifford Hall, owner of the Furniture andAntiques Warehouse in Binegar,Wells, Somerset.‘The new digital age provides

exciting opportunities for thoseof us fascinated by times gone by.We’ve come a long way fromArthur Negus and the popularantiques programme, Going fora Song. Now, thanks to greater

exposure to Antiques fromtelevision programmes likeAntiques Road Show, Flog It,Bargain Hunt, Celebrity RoadTrip and Drew Pritchard onSa lvag e Hun t , we ’ r e k ep tin formed o f the va lue anddesirability of antiques’ saysClifford.‘Antique lovers are attending

auctions around the country withtheir iPad on their lap. Googlehelps them research the historybehind any antique item. Privatebuyers have a choice, they caneither attend real auctions andbid in person, or, as many prefer, they can bid from home usingwww.the-saleroom.com as afacility. So we find customershave more choice and are moreinterested and informed thanever.’‘We are seeing that Facebook

is producing the strongestadvertising results, followedclosely by eBay. In fact, for someantique dealers, eBay is their soleoutlet and therefore, incomesource’.At Clifford Hall’s Furniture &

Antiques Warehouse, regularcus tomers r e ce ive spec ia lnotification about items that aredue in stock. ‘The digital ageactually provides the means forus to serve our customers better’,says Clifford, ‘and shortly, we willl a u n c h o u r o wn Y o u t u b eChannel, so we can share insightsand secrets, into the antiquesworld that are speci f ical lyrelevant to this period of time’.The antiques business is

certainly keeping up with the newdigital world.

Seafood fish and chips shop, andthe enterprising proprietor hasplaced tables and chairs in thetiny front yard for customers toexperience alfresco eating. I’m notconvinced that it succeeds inadding a continental air to StationRoad but it made me smile.

Browsing round the shops ona sunny April afternoon gave memore cause to smile. With greatpleasure I spotted a welcomeaddition to the bustling HighStreet – the Prime Cuts familybutcher – which opened recently.Independent specialist retailerslike this, offering high-qualitymerchandise and service tomatch, make for a much moreinviting and prosperous towncentre than do the soulless chainstores and cheapjack traders. Andthe best of them survive andthrive. Across the road fromP r i m e C u t s i s C r o c k e r sironmongery, founded by EdwinStickland in 1882, which has beentrading on Gillingham HighStreet for more than a century. And alongside the entrance toLidl’s car park is the newly-opened showroom of CullingfordCarpets and Interiors, the long-established local company nowbased on Wincanton BusinessPark. Amidst the countless estateagents, charity shops and cafésthese are some of the pleasingsigns that a traditional towncentre still exists in Gillingham.

GILLINGHAM

Cullingford Carpets and Interiors, the long-established Wincantoncompany, has recently opened a spacious new showroom in Gillingham.

THE VISITOR May 2016 13

FOR TRAVELLERS approachingMere from Zeals or Gillingham thetower of the parish church of StMichael the Archangel, standingover 120 feet high, has been aprominent landmark for morethan 500 years. The church datesmainly from the 15th centuryalthough parts are up to 200 yearsolder, and its interior containscarved Jacobean pews and hasmedieval glass in the south chapelwindow. Along with the stonecottages lining Church Street andCastle Street below Castle Hill itexudes a timeless feel, but thereare no visible remains of thefortified castle that once stood onthe hill. Allegedly when it fell intodisuse in the 15th century muchof the stone was brought down andused to build the cottages thatnowadays give the little town somuch of its charm.Much of Mere’s early charm

was restored in 1975 when thebypass opened, taking theconstant stream of heavy trafficon the A303 out of the town andleaving Castle Street, The Squareand Salisbury Street muchquieter, c leaner and safer.Salisbury Street is home to threeof Visitorland’s household names– Jeans Electrical, Yapp Brotherswine merchants and F J Chalke’scar dealership – which mustsurely assure a regular flow ofvisitors to the town. Facing backtowards The Square are thepremises of Yapp Brothers, thespecialist importers of Frenchwines. Their buildings, the

earliest dating from the 18thc e n t u r y , h a v e b e e n u s e dsuccessively for malting, brewing, bacon curing and milk processing, and although much altered downthe years and eventually fallinginto a state of near-dereliction inthe early 1970s, those requiredfor the wine business have beenbeautifully restored since RobinYapp acquired the site in 1973.Step through the arch on theWater Street frontage and you’llfind yourself in what could passfor a courtyard in rural Provence, complete with fountain, Frenchcar and various relics of theFrench wine industry. Andopening on to the courtyard is adelightful shop where these finewines can be bought by the caseor bottle – often at bin-endbargain prices.

Nearby is the shop of JeansElectrical, and although it lookssmall from the outside it sells, installs and repairs all mannerof electrical appliances. Thelarger i tems – te levis ions, washing machines, fridges andsuchlike – can be seen in aseparate spacious showroom justacross the adjacent car park, inthe former CongregationalChurch that fronts on to BoarStreet. Jeans’ chapel showroomretains its outward ecclesiasticalappearance, but inside it has beentransformed into an extensiveelectrical superstore on two floors.Like Yapps and much else inMere, it has been adapted to meetcontemporary needs withoutdetracting from the historicappearance of the town. The length of Salisbury Street

from Yapps back to The Squareis dotted with small shops andbusinesses amidst the houses andoffices, just as it must have beena century and more ago. Even FJ Chalke’s car business, whichy ou m i g h t e x p e c t t o l o o ksomewhat incongruous in suchsurroundings, sits comfortably inthis very traditional street scene.Shops are more numerous aroundThe Square, including Sproutsand Flowers which not onlyc o m b i n e s t h e t r a d e s o fgreengrocer and florist but addso the r t empt ing f o od s andadvertises itself in an eye-catching way. Waltons post officeand newsagency was a hive ofactivity when I visited, and othershops catering for the day-to-dayneeds of local residents appearedb u s y . V i s i t o r s m i g h t b eparticularly interested in WaltonHouse Antiques facing the ClockTower that stands on the site ofthe former market house, and Imust mention the Angel CornerTea Rooms at the corner of TheSquare and Angel Lane, in whatwas once part of the former AngelInn. It is everything that atraditional tea rooms should be,a n d w i t h l a r g e w i n d o w soverlooking The Square it is theideal place to take a break andwatch the world go by.Although the view gives the

impression that Mere is a sleepysmall rural town, in reality it haslong been a hive of industry. Inthe 18th century it was a centrefor linen weaving, but this hadbeen replaced by silk spinning inthe early 19th century andcontinued until the 1890s. Andtoday it is still making and sellingproducts far and wide. Mere FishFarm has established for itselfan enviable reputation for its hotand cold smoked trout andsmoked trout terrine, which canbe purchased in delicatessens andrestaurants over a wide area andfrom its farm shop at Ivymead onthe eastern edge of town. And thechandlery of Charles Farris atQuarryfields on the western sideof town makes a wide range ofchurch candles and gift candlesand supplies altar bread andwine. It, too, has a factory shopwhere its products and factoryseconds can be purchased. The biggest manufacturer of

them al l i s the Hi l l BrushCompany, which might be anunfamiliar name because itsproducts are marketed throughthe trade rather than direct tothe public. Its specialist brushes

and cleaning equipment areexported worldwide for use in thedairy, food production, cateringand hygiene industries and inho sp i t a l s and e que s t r i anestablishments. Founded in Merein 1922 by Fred and Bill Cowardin a small workshop at theirfather’s woodturnery business onCastle Street, they named thebusiness after the hill thatloomed above their premises.Within five years these were toosmall for the thriving business sothey rented Lordsmead Mill, adisused silk mill on the RiverShreen, but they outgrew this tooand moved to the company’spresent site at Woodlands Roadin the mid-1930s. Members of theCoward family are still involvedin running the business, whichnow has more than a hundredemployees , and they havemasterminded the company’snext move to a larger s i tebetween the bypass and the oldA303 at the western edge of thetown. Construction of the newfactory and a visitor centre isprogressing fast and is expectedto be finished by the end of theyear. corruption of Corago - Cor ‘heart’and ago ‘I bring’. The herbalistGerard considered Borage tocomfort the heart and dispelme lancho ly . These p lan t scertainly bring a smile to my face! The f lowers make a prettyaddition to dishes and summercocktails. The leaves are rich inpotassium and calcium and canbe a nourishing addition tosalads. Borage seeds are a supersource of Gamma Linoleic Acid,a useful anti-inflammatory thatcan aid eczema, menstrualproblems and allergies.

Centaury - When a plant takesit’s name from the Centaur Chiron,a great healer said to have giftedhumanity with the knowledge ofplant healing, you know it mustbe a pretty powerful herb!Extremely bitter, Culpeperremarked of Centaury ‘Tis verywh o l e s om e , b u t n o t v e r ytoothsome’. It is this bitternesshowever that makes it such afantas t i c d i ges t i ve a id bystimulating the flow of bile andenzymes. Centaury can be usedfor a weak appetite, poor digestionand heartburn. A simple remedythat does the opposite of mostother medicines used for reflux -it promotes digestive functionrather than suppressing acidproduction (which can lead to allkinds of problems if used longterm). Edward Bach also made a flower

essence from Centaury for peoplewho find it hard to say ‘no’. Forthose who may be gentle, caringand always looking to the needsof others or perhaps even eager toplease, this remedy can help withthe acknowledgement of what isright for the individual. The abilityto serve without being subservient,to care for oneself as well as others.

Honeysuckle - Perhaps morefamiliar to us as a creeping plant, winding its way through ourwoodlands and gardens, emitting

that sweet honeyed fragrance -honeysuckle has some prettyuseful medicinal properties too!The leaves and flowers containsalicylic acid, a pain killer on whichaspirin is based. This makes themuseful for rheumatism, headaches, muscular pain and fever. Thef l ow e r s a r e a l s o a u s e f u lrespiratory tonic and can make asoothing syrup or tea for sorethroats. As a Bach flower remedy,

Honeysuckle is used for thosewho live in the past. They mayb e o v e r l y n o s t a l g i c a n dsentimental about better daysgone by and are therefore missingout on the gift of the presentmoment and hope for the future.

Rose - I couldn’t talk aboutflowers without touching on Rose.Queen of flowers, symbol of love& beauty, embodiment of Venus.Rose is possibly my all timefavourite scent, I use the essentialoil regularly in burners, creamsand oils. Rose floral water makesa beautiful room spray, facialtoner or cooling spritz whenchilled and sprayed on the skinin summer or for menopausalflushes. Uplifting and sensual, rose petals can be used as aherbal tea, popular for relievingmenstrual problems, lifting thespirits and soothing the nervoussystem. Use the pure essentialoil as perfume, add the petals toyour baths, slather your skin inthe oil of rose hips - there arereally so many wonderfullyindulgent ways of using thisplant, and we all deserve a littlepampering!Bach also has a remedy of Wild

Rose. Consider it when feelingapathetic, resigned or lacking inambition. Ralph Waldo Emerson said

that ‘the Earth laughs in flowers’- I think she heals us in flowerstoo.

Fauvisimo by HarlequinFauvisimo is a stunning collectionof fabrics, comprising dramaticand painterly designs, inspiredby the vibrant colours and boldbrushstrokes of the early 20thCentury’s Fauvist art movement. Its prints, which feature British

birds, flowers and landscapes, arestunning in their spontaneous, liberated interpretation of thebeauty and intensity of colourfound in nature. The layering of

rich, contrasting tones developswarmth and energy against thecooler backdrop of natural cloth. The powerful colour palette rangesfrom cobalt blues and deepmagentas to moody greys, sultryblack and on-trend mustards, andincludes softer highlights of mutedgreens, blush pinks and honey

shades. Including embroideries, jacquards, weaves and prints,Fauvisimo’s refreshing fabrics, with their strong emphasis oncolour, will add ebullience andcharacter to any interior scheme.Available from Needful Things ofCastle Cary.

I START THIS MONTH with mypicture which was taken at therecent Dorset Section Winter Runfrom Dorchester. It shows PeterWood from Highcliffe (right) andNigel Percy from New Milton. Both had a fair distance to travelbefore signing on and doing theorganised run, followed of courseby the trip home. Both did at least140 miles that day. It does showwhat a large area our events drawfrom, and it also shows that doinggood mileages on old bikes neednot be a worry on the reliabilityfront. So when the weather permitsI see no reason why we should notuse our old vehicles and enjoy everymile we do. Old vehicle clubs by nature

attract membership mainly fromthe senior end of the age range. There are always exceptions ofcourse and this may be a sweepinggeneralisation. But when speakingto friends recently our concern foryounger members is shared witha good many other pastimes. It

seems that golf, camera clubs, bowls, tennis and whatever otherclubs you name, all seem to besuffering with this same problem.I therefore ask the question ‘whatare the young people of today doingwith their free time?’ I do notaccept that money is the primereason as youngsters today haveit no tougher than when I was ayoungster. Gym clubs is a recentphenomenon and cost a great deal, and I cannot believe that theremainder are all at home playingcomputer games and the like. Sowe have a challenge to all clubs asto how we attract new youngmembers, and a similar challengeto young people to get out and keepthese pastimes going. They mayeven improve their interactionskills with real people. May brings the promise of

warmer and drier weather and thisis reflected in the number of eventsplanned. Every classic club is busyand the choice of where to go andwhat to see has never been greater. The Westlands Club will be holdingits annual Spirit of the Sixties Runon the 8th May. Always a popularevent and well attended this eventraises lots of cash to go to localcharities. Well worth supporting. The Somerset Section has its

club night on the 5th at Cossingtonand on the 29th will be the All DayBreakfast Run from Spaxton.Sounds tempting. The WessexVeteran and Vintage Section hasits club night on the 9th and onthe 22nd they have a Run andPicnic. The Dorset Section willhave the Lunch Meet at WestStour on the 4th followed on the11th by an Evening Run. The

Weymouth Run is planned for the15th, starting from the Promenade.Lastly they return to West Stouron the 19th for the Breakfast Meet. All three Sections will be takingpart in the Founders Relay Rallyon the 1st and towards the end ofthe month each Section will bedoing its piece for the Baton Rally.More on these two events later.Everyone is welcome at all our clubactivities so for more informationring 01935-872528.Twenty years ago the founder of

the VMCC, Titch Allen, suggestedthat every Section should lay on acheckpoint and riders could choosetheir own route and visit as manydifferent checkpoints as they wishduring the day. Some riders dohundreds of miles visiting manycheckpoints, others on slowermachines might only manage twoo r th ree , bu t th i s i s o f noconsequence as long as everybodygets out and does their own thing.Held every two years this event isalways popular. It is fascinatingsometimes to see old machinesscampering off in all directions. This year the VMCC is seventy

years old. To mark this milestonea baton has been made and willtravel around the country visitingall 86 Sections. A log book willaccompany the baton to show itscourse and to make a record forthose who follow us. At the end ofits tour the baton will end up atCadwell Park on the 25th Junewhere British Historic Racing (theracing arm of the VMCC) will becelebrating its 50th anniversary.Joint celebrations are planned. Allriders can join any Section toaccompany the baton on its wayaround the country. If you fancyseeing, or better still accompanyingthe baton, then I have the full routeand timetable so ring me fordetails. Each Section along the waywill be getting press coverage andno doubt celebratory meals or socialevenings thus making an enjoyabletime for all. Make sure you takepart. Now I am off to play Table

Tennis. This is a twice weeklyoccurrence and we play for a threehour session and the standard ofplay is quite high. Virtually allOAP's of course so we stop halftime to put the world to rightswhilst having a coffee break. Theconversation will probably getaround to the problem of attractingnew members, especially youngones. I fear old age is creeping upon me very quickly as I constantlyseem to be repeating myself.

Local BrewsNOT MUCH OF A beer drinkermyself, much preferring a glassof vino, nevertheless I try to keepan open mind, and when invitedto fund raising events where thefocus is on local brews it seemssomehow churlish to decline.Perhaps it is time to revise myhitherto lack of willingness toimbibe. With Somerset Day coming up

on the 11th May, which had itsinaugural celebration in 2015, itseems the perfect excuse to fullyembrace all that the county hasto offer, hence for the second yearrunning I felt obliged to samplea bellyful of local real ales. Imight just get a taste for the stuffif I keep this up!Never one for skimping on the

research I sampled eight beers inall from a variety of Somersetproducers. In some cases thebee r s men t i oned a r e on l yavailable from the brewery, thelinks for which are providedbelow.

Tapstone Brewing Co. Chardwww.tapstone.co.ukWild Woods 4.5% abv.This is a golden Indian Pale Alewith a distinctive pine and citruscharacter, very refreshing on ahot day.Sea Monster 4.2% abv.T h e t r o p i c a l f l a v o u r saccompanying the citrus in thisblonde ale can transport you towarmer climes.

North Curry Brewerywww.thenorthcurrybrewerycouk.comRed Heron, 4.3% abv. This is the first of the five alesproduced by this family runbusiness. Made from pale andcrystal malt, it is full bodied witha malty flavour that is balancedby the bitterness of golden hops.

They also have on offer LevelHeaded 4.7% abv, which is atraditional old English ale witha dark ruby colour and a rich fullflavour.

Windy Brewerywww.thevolly.co.ukHere they produce the popularTornado, 4.2% abv, which hasa smooth bitterness offset byforest fruits.I liked their Helm, 5.7% abv,

a brown porter produced at therear of The Volunteer Inn atSeavington. It’s made with driedyeast to ensure consistency (onlyavailable on site) and has asuggestion of toasted caramelt o f f e e t i n g ed w i t h s p i c e dmarmalade.

Stocklinch Ales.www.stocklinchales.co.ukThis local brewery, situated on afarm, was started by Kevin andfriends just 4 years ago. Sincethen it has become something ofa ‘go to’ venue at weekends, whe r e l i v e mus i c i s o f t enfeatured. They currently make 4 ales,

with names such as ‘Rusty Boiler’and ‘Beers Jakes’, using just 4ingredients, hops, malt, yeast andwater. Those who like a goldenbeer with a fruity flavour shouldtry their Ramblers Gold Extra,4.5% abv.Top choice for me though is

Black Smock, 5% abv., which Ifirst sampled last year. Thisaward winning ale is a dark beerwith a strong taste of liquoriceand coffee, and just a hint ofblackcurrant. I found it alsomakes the perfect ingredient fora rich, moist, dark cake; truly

scrumptious. The hint of liquoricecharacter of the ale perfectlyoffsets its sweetness. Made inmuch the same way as stickytoffee pudding, even a novice canmake this successfully.

IngredientsHalf a pint Black Smock ale8oz. unsalted butter12oz. caster sugar2oz. cocoa powder5 fl. oz. crème fraîche3 medium eggs1 tbsp. vanilla extract1 tsp. ground mixed spice9oz. plain flour2½ tsp. of bicarbonate of soda

MethodGrease and line a 9in. (23cm.)spring form cake tin.Preheat oven to gas mark

4/180°C/350ºF.

1. Pour the ale into a largesaucepan, add the butter, andheat until melted.

2.Whisk in the sugar and cocoa.3. Beat the crème fraîchetogether with the eggs andvanilla and add to the mixture.

4.Whisk in the flour, mixedspice and bicarbonate of soda.

5. Pour the mixture into thecake tin and bake in thecentre of the oven for 45minutes to an hour (fanassisted ovens will cook morequickly). A skewer insertedinto the middle should comeout clean, and the top shouldspring back if pressed gently.

6. Leave the cake to cool in thetin. When cold, serve as is, or better

still top it off with a rich darkchocolate ganache, or smotheredin cream cheese frosting for trueindulgence.Looking for alternative gifts for

someone’s birthday? Then look no further than Gyle

59 Brewery near Thorncombe,o n t h e D o r s e t b o r d e rwww.gyle59.co.ukThey describe their artisan

beers as ‘spring fed, log powered, propane driven, unfined, hazycrazy’ and offer 1-day or 2-dayBrew Ha-Ha courses in practicalhome brewing.

'Hi y'all, and how are youdoing today?'YES, you've guessed; the Baxtercrew have been heading Stateside

again in that never-ending questto bring you good readers of theViz all that is best in Americanbeers, and sample 'Good ol'Southern hospitality'. Now beforewe go any further, let's make acouple th ings c l ear . S incereturning, everyone we havespoken to still seems to think thatthe place is awash with fizzytasteless near-beer made by bigmult inat ionals in soul lessfactories. The truth is ... it is!However, once the student islooking, the mentor will appear, and it is not difficult to find thebars and pubs where there is awide variety of local craft/artisanbreweries that serve both draughtand bottled beers of great quality.Note that I did not use the term'ale' for whilst in Great Britainthe CAMRA inspired term 'realale' means cask-conditioned - i.e.still with live yeast at the pointof dispense - but most of the USA

draught beers are pressure-dispensed from kegs, but areflavoursome and quite often, strong! Would CAMRA have beenfounded if the bland and tastelesskeg beers foisted upon us from thelate 60's been as tasty? I doubt itsomehow, although that point isup for discussion. So despite the sea of fizz which

is heavily advertised and makingup in excess of 95% of the beersconsumed, every bar we visitedhad something worth a try. Wewere staying some of the time withmy Godson, Richard, who residesin a suburb of Atlanta, namelyWoodstock (no; not that one, adifferent one) and having beenliving in the States for some 14years knows his way around alittle bit, or to put it another way, where the good pubs are! (Well, It r a i n e d h i m w e l l , b e i n gresponsible for his spiritualwelfare an' all). His parents alsoknow the local area well, and haveintroduced us to some f ineestablishments, the first being'Woodstock Freight Kitchen', aformer goods shed as we wouldrefer to it, slap bang next to therailway. To my eye it would seemthat the actual structure of thebuilding has remained littlechanged since it was built, whichwas around 1897, with a high

ceiling, bare-boarded wallse x p o s e d b r i c k w o r k e t c .Incidentally the 'Rest Room' (youcan guess that one) consisted ofjust ONE loo, for male, female anddisabled, which I am sure gets -ahem! - rather a lot of use on abusy night! The lighting is notoverdone which all adds to theatmosphere, and on our first visitsome 18 months ago we werethrilled to hear an appropriateselection of 'Southern Rock' beingplayed on the sound system, although who should be playingon this occasion? One of England'sfinest - Stevie Winwood!Incidentally, the railway still

runs, not 'through the middle ofthe house' but pretty muchthrough the middle of the town.Whilst there are barriers on theroad crossings there are no suchthings as fences keeping thepopulace from hurling themselvesin front of the freight trains thatstill pass through. Somewhatdifferent from this side of thepond! Visiting for one of theirexcellent lunches, we also foundsome excellent beers from theirconstantly changing beer menu. Our 'server' (waitress) Amy, wasattentive and helpful as they allseem to be, even if the cynicalmight feel that this is the onlyway they can get a decent wage.

This i s because t ips are asubstantial part of their earnings- and are also part of ones' bill(or 'check' as they prefer to callit). Whilst I tend to generally onlygive scant attention to food in thiscolumn, I ordered a most deliciousbeef burger and I have to say thatwhen they serve a beef burger, itis a 'serious' beef burger, and notat all like one gets in certain fast-food chains in England (the samechains exist there of course). Itcertainly pays to go to theindependent outlets I feel. Ourbeers on this occasion were 'RedHare Brown Ale' at 5.5%ABV, and'Foothills Porter' at 6.2%ABV, bothexcellent we thought. Prices aregenerally slightly more per pintthan over here (they also tend tomeasure in ounces, and anAmerican pint is slightly smallerthan ours). As always they areserved much too cold for ourliking, but this matters little asthe temperature soon creeps upand those flavours come throughwith a vengeance. In fact, whenthe ambient temperature is easilyover 80F, a colder beer is verywelcome! Just down the road from the

Freight Kitchen is Century HouseTavern, which is much like anEnglish pub. Again a fine selectionof beers, and we chose the bottled5.6%ABV 'Bells Porter' and'Kentucky Bourbon Barrel' at8.19%ABV, accompanied by amplesized portions of food served froman extensive menu. Needless to

say each of these establishmentshave their own web-site. Do takea look.American laws regarding

alcohol can be interesting. Oneneeds to be 21 to buy intoxicatingliquor in Georgia and indeed allother States, but amazingly, whenvisiting 'Bullocks' a huge liquorstore in Woodstock for a selectionof bottled beers to bring home wewere asked for identification, eventhough all four of us are into our60's - or even pushing 70! Thecheckout lady said she had to askfor proof ('there are cameraseverywhere') and added that whenher daughter and boyfriend hadvisited England how amazing itwas to stride into a pub, order beerand never be challenged. W e s p e n t s om e t im e i n

Chattanooga where the highlightwas taking a cable-hauled trainup 'Lookout Mountain' (pause foreveryone to make suitable silly

train-like noises), and headingback to Atlanta took a diversionto Marietta, another suburb ofAt lanta where is s i ted theaforement ioned 'Red HareBrewery'. The alcohol rules appearto be bent a little as we wereofficially on a 'Brewery Tour', andour visit cost each of us $8, (about£5) at which point we were fittedwith a wrist-band (just like atGlasto) on which were eight littlepictures of a hare, crossed off oneat a time by staff as each beer wassampled. Although early eveningcrowds were thronging thepremises, spil l ing onto thefrontage where we were delightedto be instructed on the finer pointsof the game 'Corn Hole'. We hadgiven this fine game a mentionafter our last visit and it wouldappear this is played nationwide;quite a feat for a huge country.Put simply, the game involvestossing bean-bags at a distance of

25 feet with the aim of gettingthem through a hole in a board. Please do take time out to see thegame in action on Youtube, andas there is already a thrivingcommunity of players in thiscountry, I would dearly love to seeit played in pubs everywhere. It'sideal for the pub garden, car parkor even the skittle alley in poorweather, it's simple to make andsimple to play, but of course thereis a good amount of skill as wellas a teeny bit of luck - the idealpub game in fact ! We wereinstructed on some of the finerpoints by locals Joe and Marty, but needless to say in a game ofdoubles Richard and I were givena sound thrashing 21 - 8, and itwas nothing to do with all the beer... honest. Next month we'll take a trip

'Way Down Yonder in NewOrleans', as the song goes. Y'allhave a good day now!

TOOT TOOT!!!

Magical MayQUITE THE MOST MAGICALtime of year and I love it! So fullof new leaf and blossom but it allgoes so fast and although I’d loveit to stay forever, each season hasits joys and must be enjoyed.Spring weather is predictablychangeable – nothing new thereso the skill is to cope with it,whether it is protecting earlygrowth and blossom from frost ormaking sure that seeds are sownin time, germinate and arenurtured to a size to plant outand grow. But it’s the blossomthat gets us all excited, theornamental and fruit blossommeans so much after the darkwinter months. Elsewhere in the landscape the

grass is growing and lawns arecalling for attention. Long periodsof mild wet weather encouragesmoss to grow and chokes thegrass. There are ways of dealingwith it but most require at leasta mod i c um o f h a r d w o r k .Depending on just how bad the

lawn is, I would suggest cuttingit really hard, boxing off theclippings before giving it thetreatment. That could be one ofthe really good weed, feed andmosskill products such as theclassic Evergreen Complete, or astraight forward mosskiller. Thelatter usually contains ferroussulphate which kills the moss andgreens up the grass. Within avery short time your nice greenlawn will turn black and look likedeath! Next stage, I’m afraid isto get the rake out or hire a

scarifier to drag out all the deadmoss. If it’s really bad then youmight need to have a couple ofgoes at it, eventually ending upwith a sparse but grassy area. Atthis point, if there is a lot of bareground, over-sow with a mixtureof grass seed and multipurposecompost mixed with loamy JohnInnes . The new grass wi l lgerminate quite quickly and helpto fill in where the moss was. With the summer ahead, a goodlooking lawn is essential and wellworth the effort

Go for an informalmix or choose a formal patternor ca r twhee l de s i gn . As acentrepiece plant a large, shrubbyherb such as rosemary or sage, aformally clipped bay tree, or apotted herb arrangement. In small spaces herbs can be

grown in pots, either plantingthem individually and groupingpots together into displays orcreating bold combinations inlarger containers. As many herbshave Mediterranean origins theyrelish a site in full sun where theycan bake during summer. Soilmust be free-draining too, as wetand waterlogged ground will leadto root damage, and for potschoose a free-draining loam-basedcompost.Low-growing thyme is one of

the herb garden favourites, perfectf o r mak ing a herb carpe t ,softening the edges of gravelpaths, or filling gaps betweenpaving. With flavoursome foliagein greens, silvers and golds, pluscolourful flowers too, they'll lookgood and provide pickings all year.Whether adding to salads,

cooking with new potatoes, ormaking herb teas, mint is aversatile herb with many uses.Their colours and flavours varyimmense l y f r om power fu lpeppermint and spearmint tothose with an underlying taste ofapple, citrus, banana, red berries,a n d m a n y m o r e . Herbs have so manyuses from using fresh in cooking, making pesto, infusing into herboils and vinegars, or making herbteas.A wonderful assortment of herb

Herb TopiariesSeveral shrubby herbs can beclipped and trained into formaltopiary features. These livingsculptures not only look strikingbut their clippings can be usedin cooking or dried and stored. The best herb topiaries are

created using upright growingvarieties of rosemary, sweet bay, sage, lemon verbena, Greekmyrtle, or even tender perennialslike scented leaf pelargoniums. Popular shapes for training bay

Top Tips for successful Herb Gardens1. Although many herbs are of

Mediterranean origin and relishhot dry conditions, to get the bestfrom herbs in pots most requireregular watering to prevent theircompost drying out completely.Try standing pots in saucers ofwater so po ts can take upmoisture as required.2. Add natural fertiliser to one

watering a week to keep plantsgrowing strongly, or mix slow-release fertiliser granules intocompost at planting time.3. Regular picking of some

herbs, like basil, encourages sideshoots to form, keeping plantsbushy and productive.4. Pick and dry the leaves of

herbs like thyme, sage, bay andmany others to store and usewhen cooking.5. The flowers of many herbs

can be used to brighten summersalads. Use flowers from chives, basil, coriander and thyme, andflowers or petals from daylilies, pot marigolds, nasturtium, lavender and others. NB Alwayscheck flowers are edible beforeeating.6. Coriander has a habit of

bolting or running to seed, butenjoy their flowers as they'llencourage beneficial insects, likehoverflies, into your garden. Letplants set seed, then collect anddry coriander seeds to grind anduse when cooking spicy Indiandishes.

Jobs for the MonthWarmth and moisture producefantastic growth and young or

freshly planted items will need alittle extra care and support.Don’t let them dry out as theirroots will not yet have madeenough growth to reach lower soilmoisture as yet. By the sametoken don’t drown them by overwatering. It can be hard to reacha balance and in truth it is a skillthat comes with experience. After the winter, watch for

damaged growth and prune backas soon as you are sure thatthings have stabilised and youcan tell how far the damage hasgone. Generally look for the firstgood healthy bud after thedamaged section. Root death isharder to spot especially whereplants have been rocked by wind, and sat for long periods inwaterlogged ground. These maysuddenly collapse when the plantstarts into growth – when thedemands of the shoots exceed theability of the roots to support it.Give encouragement in the formof a feed and mulch and they mayrecover. Even more important, don’t let spring planted trees andshrubs die for lack of water fromdry periods. Keep an eye on newlysown areas; seedlings do not liketo get started and then be left todry out.In the vegetable garden, sow

main crop carrots, swedes, spinach and lettuce. Sow runnerand dwarf beans in trays or pots.Sweet corn can go in provided thesoil is in reasonable condition,a n d w e l l manu r e d . Mak esuccessional sowings of saladcrops [every 14 days]. Prepare thesites for marrows, courgettes andpumpkins (a 1 ft hole filled with

well-rotted manure is ideal)which can be planted out in themiddle of the month.Weed control through regular

hoe ing i s a lways the be s tapproach - use it when the soil isdry so that dislodged weeds can’troot again. Keep the fleece handyin case we do get a cold snap. When you get to the herbaceous

borde r - hoe o f f emerg ingseedlings, and mulch with well-rotted garden compost. Potgrown plants can be planted atany time, and don’t forget toprovide support for the tallerg r o w i n g p l a n t s s u c h a sDelphiniums. This is an excellent time for

planting up ponds and marginalareas to give a good effect thissummer. A mini pond in a tub isreally effective, easy to create andlooks attractive and interestingon a patio or terrace. Roses are growing fast and

must be cared for. Even thoughmany modern varieties are lesssusceptible to black spot, they

still do better if treated, and thefirst spray of the season is themost important. Best of all, feedyour roses well, mulch liberally, and make sure they don’t go shortof water in May and June.Shrub borders – don’t touch

summer flowering shrubs as youwill lose the flowers, but you canprune the early flowering shrubssuch as Forsythia and clip theevergreens.

S a r a h a f t e r s e e i n g h e rinstallation piece ‘Lichen’ at theMaureen Michaelson Gallerystand at GROW London last year.‘The 4 metre textured fishingnet/canopy I’m making by handincorporates fine woven copperwires, twine, silk, wool and othersurprising found materials likefish skeletons! It’s a long processand an exciting prospect – I’venot produced work for ChelseaFlower Show before. There willbe technical hurdles, but I’mlooking forward to weaving andlayering it up. I’ll also be creatingsome wire fishing baskets asprops.’

Nick’s involvement follows onfrom their previous collaboration:‘Working with Fiona last year on'step in stone' was an intriguingand very rewarding experienceso I am delighted to be working

with her again on this. I loveSarah Eberle's concept for thegarden. Sarah's photos andstories of the area and traditionalboats are really interesting andhave inspired our designs. Theboa t / s ea t i s a f a s c ina t ingchallenge and satisfies my desireto make unique and unusualpieces. I can't wait to see it allcome together at Chelsea.’The public and judges are sure

to be captivated! The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

PAPERCHASEA SHORTER COLUMN thanusual this month. There is noshortage of material in my file ofpress cuttings but it’s the usuald e p r e s s i n g m i x t u r e o fmisspellings, grammatical errors, misused words, missing andmisplaced text - all things that‘once upon a time’ would havebeen picked up by a watchfulproofreader or sub-editor beforethey found there way into print. The former no longer exists on

our local papers and I’m not surewhat role the latter plays in thesedays of direct input from thereporters’ computers.I’m told that it includes page

make-up. In which case, whoeverwas responsible for the contentof the 17th March issue of theWestern Gazettewas certainly notbeing watchful. A story on page14 headlined ‘Shoplifter testedpositive for cocaine’ was repeateda few pages later under theheadline ‘Shoplifter targetedsame shop twice in three days’.Different headline but word-for-word the same court report, merely abridged by the omissionof six short sentences. In thesedays of computer wizardry theremust surely be a way of ensuringthat, once a story is in the system,if it has been used on one page itcannot be used on another one.It would be too tedious, for you

as well as for me, to run throughthe other cuttings in the file. Theysimply provide more evidence ofthe sad decline in standards inour local papers. One of the ‘oldschool’ of reporters who, I feel

sure, shares my dismay, retiredfrom the Western Daily Press inlate March after a career injournalism of more than 40 years.I first met Tina Rowe in 1988when work b rought me t oVisitorland. At that time she wasthe Bristol Evening Post reporterbased in Yeovil, having previouslybeen with the Western Gazetteand subsequently transferring tothe Western Daily Press, alln e w s p a p e r s i n t h e s am ep u b l i s h i n g g r o u p . I n m yprofessional contacts with Tinashe was always a stickler fora c cu ra cy and ob j e c t i v i t y ,constantly checking the details

and asking pointed questions toensure that I was revealing thewhole story. She knew her patchwell, knew something of thepersonalities in it and theirvested interests, understood thebackground to the issues makingthe news and remembered thehistory of long-running matters. This only comes when a reporterhas been around long enough tod i s c o v e r a n d a b s o r b t h i sinformation, and 40 years hasbeen long enough. She has earneda long and happy retirement butwill be sorely missed from thepages of the Western Daily Press.
