In Passing...

HEADlINE news from George

Osborne’s budget in March was

that the 3p per litre increase in

fuel duty, planned to take effect

in September, has been scrapped. News

that didn’t make the headlines emerged in

early April from the Department of Energy

and Climate Change. Forecourt fuel sales

have dropped in the last five years, from

37.67 billion litres in 2007 to just 34.16

billion in 2012. While diesel sales showed a

small increase, petrol sales plummeted.

If you’ve got a very long memory you

will probably recall the Earth Summit at

Rio de Janeiro in the mid-1990s. In its

wake, with worries about global warming,

the Conservative government decided that

tax on petrol and diesel should be increased

progressively to encourage us to reduce

our mileage, buy fuel-efficient vehicles

instead of ‘gas-guzzlers’, use public

transport wherever possible, and adopt

practices like car-sharing. For about 20% of

fossil fuels – the main source of carbon

dioxide in the atmosphere – are used in

transport, and the greatest source of air

pollution in Visitorland is from road

transport.

This policy was continued by the labour

governments of Tony Blair and Gordon

Brown to the point where around 90% of

the price of a litre of fuel goes to the

government in duty and VAT. Yet the

volume of traffic on the roads continues to

rise every year, adding to congestion and

a i r p o l l u t i o n . B u t i f o v e r a l l f u e l

consumption is dropping then the high tax

regime is achieving precisely what it set out

to do – to reduce the environmental impact

of the motor car.

But it will have done nothing to reduce

Visitorland’s dependence on this means of

transport. In much of our area motor

vehicles are usually the only option. Many

rural services have been centralised – the

closure of local magistrates courts, village

schools, sub post offices and neighbourhood

shops are just a few examples – requiring

us to make more longer journeys. There is

often no easy alternative way of getting to

the shops or the doctor, of visiting friends or

going to work. Nowadays few people live on

the doorstep of their workplace. And many

of our local businesses are dependent on

road transport to bring in their supplies,

raw materials, staff and customers and to

take away their products.

Yet according to the Automobi le

Association, three quarters of its members

are having to cut back on journeys,

household expenditure or both, due to the

high cost of fuel. It claims that 800,000

households nationwide are spending more

than a quarter of their income on operating

a vehicle. If rising running costs force low-

paid workers in the public and private

sectors to give up their cars it will have a

knock-on effect throughout the economy.

So the challenge is to find ways of reducing

not only the environmental impact of the

motor car but also the financial impact on

the driver, but there are no easy answers.

Thank YouSir, Thank you very much for

Complaint 2Sir, The cartoon on page 47 of

It will be a Sunday roast and

£10 from each adult ticket for the

two nominated charities above.

There will also be a raffle at each

prize(depending on take), second

prize a bottle of whisky and third

prize a bottle of wine.

The two sittings will be from

To book your place call the

Heigh ho, they're off !Sir, I read with interest the

covering letter and literature of

the liberal Democrats claiming

that the County Elections were

a two horse race . I a lways

thought that was a determination

of the electorate?

Perhaps in this race Democracy

isn't to be considered or even

running in the view of the liberal

Democrats?

A lot has changed in the

political landscape over the last 4

years: Party runners failing to

live up to their promises; fallen

riders; blatant misrepresentation

of form; regularly finishing in

lower positions around the

country than forecast; continuing

to disappoint the punters who

backed them, as shown in

numerous polls. Previous poor

judgement when in County in

decision making which has cost

l o c a l p u n t e r s d e a r l y a n d

continues so to do, i.e. interest

s t i l l b e i n g p a i d o n l o a n s

undertaken to indulge bad

judgement.

Given the track history, and

t h e r o u g h g o i n g t o c o m e ,

Democracy may well decide that

enough is more than enough and

decide a change of colours are

long overdue. Saddle up, some-

Fight fly-tipping:just ask ‘em!Sir, As your correspondent NN

suggested (In Passing … March),

f l y - t i p p i n g i s a s e r i o u s

environmental crime. But there is

plenty we can do in Somerset to

deter or catch those responsible.

Apart from keeping a careful

eye out to report fly-tippers to

district council customer services,

each of us – householder or

business – has a duty of care over

our waste, even after it has left

our premises.

I f your waste i s dumped

illegally, you could be charged,

convicted and fined up to £5,000

for not checking that it would be

legally removed to a suitable

place by a registered carrier.

Yet there is a simple defence

that could also leave Somerset a

cleaner and safer place: whenever

any tradesperson or business

offers to take away your waste,

ask to see their waste carrier

licence, and where the waste will

go.

If they take away waste, good

builders, gardeners, plumbers,

electricians, and that man-and-

a-van, will all have a waste

carrier licence, and be happy to

produce it. No licence? Don’t use

them.

And there is even a simple,

discrete way to check if a business

or trader is registered: just call

03708 506 506 with the business

name to discover if they have a

licence, or look them up online

by searching for ‘public registers’

a t w w w . e n v i r o n m e n t -

agency.gov.uk. No licence? Don’t

use them.

As NN suggested, that building

rubble, garden waste and old

f u r n i t u r e i s c o m i n g f r o m

somewhere, perhaps even from

you, but a quick question could be

all it takes to fight fly-tipping.

Show Time AgainDespite adverse rumours, the

Gil l ingham & Shaftesbury

Agricultural Show will be held

as usual - this year on Wednesday

21st August. 2012 was not the

best year for the G&S Show (and

most other outdoor events too),

and it will go down in the record

books as the wettest year, but the

rain and mud did not deter Show

visitors. Investment in drainage

and track and the hard work by

the team of volunteers paid

dividends and the showground

stood up to the deluge extremely

well. Regrettably the car parks

proved a new experience for many

visitors!

Plans for August 21st 2013 are

now well in hand. New classes,

new displays, bigger marquees,

more attractions and events for

all the family. The Gillingham &

will be held at the Turnpike

Shaftesbury. For schedules or

of blogs, websites and onlinepresentations, is that treatedas the sale of a capital asset inmy hands subject to capitalgains tax? If so, can I sellsuch intellectual propertyevery year for £10,000, so thegain is covered by my annualexemption and I pay no tax?

Robert Stone replies: There are two reasons why your

plan won't work:

i. You and your company are

c o n n e c t e d p a r t i e s . A n y

transactions between you and the

company must be valued at open

market value. Is your blog etc.,

really worth £10,000 on the open

market?

ii. The Taxman's view is that

transactions involving copyright

will generally fall to be taxed as

income receipts, not capital gains.

Q3. Our son is now oldenough to attend nursery.Can my company, as myemployer, help out with thenursery fees?

Robert Stone replies:Your company can provide you

with childcare vouchers to be

redeemed at registered child care

providers, and the first £55 per

week of vouchers will be tax and

NI free. If both parents work for

the company they can each get

£55 worth of child care vouchers

per week. However, if you pay

tax at 40%, you can only receive

£28 per week of vouchers tax fee.

Those that pay tax at the new

highest rate of 45% (from 6 April

2013) can only receive up to £25

per week of tax free vouchers.

The company must offer childcare

vouchers to all it's employees who

work at the same site, it cannot

exclude any employees, but

employees can opt out. However,

only parents with children aged

under 16 can qualify for childcare

vouchers. There are a number of

other rules which are set out in

the HMRC booklet E18: How you

can help your employees with

childcare.

Superfoods – Part 29PICKING UP OUR superfoods

series again, this month we’re

taking a look at mushrooms.

Prized as a valuable source of

food and a potent medicine for

10 THE VISITOR May 2013

thousands of years, there are

many varieties of mushroom

available. Edible mushrooms are

all packed with nutrition and in

this article we’ll focus on the basic

button mushroom as well as three

popular ‘medicinal’ varieties –

maitake, reishi and shiitake.

Button – The mushroom we

are probably most familiar with.

The term ‘button mushroom’ may

apply to white , brown and

Portobello types. A food source

since prehistoric times, these

mushrooms have been prized by

the ancient Egyptians and

Romans. Mushrooms are often

associated with super human

s t r e n g t h , p o w e r a n d e v e n

immortality. Although I doubt

they’ll make you live forever, they

could help you l ive better .

Mushrooms are packed with

minerals including copper,

potassium, selenium and zinc, as

well as B vitamins, anti-oxidants

and phytochemicals. Most of the

attention mushrooms have

received has been in the research

of their anti-cancer potential. This

is often attributed to their beta-

glucan content, thought to pack a

powerful immune boosting punch.

Maitake – These mushrooms

have demonstrated pronounced

immune enhancing ability and

anti-carcinogenic activity. As well

a s b e i n g a p o t e n t c a n c e r

p r e v e n t i o n f o o d , m a i t a k e

mushrooms also have a reputation

for helping the body cope with the

side effects of conventional

medical cancer treatments such

as nausea and pain – although

a l w a y s c o n s u l t w i t h y o u r

physician if you would like to

include these in your treatment.

reishi – A primary longevity

tonic in traditional medicine.

Reishi are valued as an all round

health booster. With anti-oxidant,

antimicrobial, anti-allergenic and

anti-inflammatory effects you can

see why. Reishi has also been

used to support the liver and as a

treatment for hypertension, joint

problems and asthma.

shiitake – These mushrooms

have been used medicinally for

more than 6,000 years. They

contain a compound cal led

lentinan, known to fire up the

immune system, lower cholesterol

and have anti-cancer properties.

Often used in traditional remedies

for colds and ‘flu, why not try a

nourishing broth with added

shitake mushrooms next time you

feel the sniffles coming on?

IF ASKED I don't suppose many of

us would remember exactly what

we were doing in the early evening

of Monday 27th July 1998. I do. I

was sat in the living room of my in-

laws home, glancing up every now

and again from a newspaper to the

television in the corner of the room.

On the television was a bike race

and a diminutive Italian, clad head

to toe in multi-coloured lycra, head

hidden beneath a bandana, was

rocketing up a mountain in quite

atrocious conditions. My glances

became more frequent; my interest

piqued. This was sport unlike

anything I had seen before. This

was not just man against man, it

was man against nature. I became

transfixed as the Italian rode to

victory, the paper long since

discarded. Yes, the evening of

Monday 27th July 1998: I know

where I was; know what I was

doing; know what happened. That

was when Marco Pantani made

me fall in love with the mountains

of the Tour de France. And I'll

never forget it.

I became obsessed. I sought out

and devoured every book I could

on the great race. Hitherto

unfamiliar names: Coppi, Garin,

Bartali, Merckx, Hinault, Fignon,

Van Impe and many more ;

b e c a m e l i k e o l d f r i e n d s .

Mountains I had never heard of:

Tourmalet, Aubisque, Galibier,

Ventoux; became sporting arenas

to rank with Wembley, Lords,

Wimbledon. I immersed myself

in the history of what was fast

becoming to my mind the world's

greatest sporting event.

If asked I don't suppose many

of us would remember exactly

what we were doing the morning

of Monday 17th July 2006. I do. I

was busy realising a dream. A

dream that I'd held ever since

that July evening in 1998. On

Monday 17th July 2006 I rode

the Col du Galibier for the first

time. It was my first experience of

cycling up a mountain.

It was an emotional experience.

I knew the place that this great

mountain had in the history of

the race. I knew that it was the

first high Alp to be crossed, way

back in 1911; I knew that it was

the favourite mountain of Tour

founder Henri Desgrange. And I

knew exactly where Pantani had

launched his blistering attack in

1998.

I t w a s a l s o a h u m b l i n g

experience. The Galibier is long

and hard. You pass through lush

meadows, riding through the tree-

line, emerging into a barren, rock

strewn, desolate space. The climb

is 18km long but it is the last nine

that are the toughest; relentlessly

steep with barely a section upon

which to catch your breath.

Towards the top I was so tired I

fell off. Eventually I picked myself

up. I got back on my bike and

slowly made it to the top. And

there I stood, overjoyed, posing

for the obligatory photograph

underneath the sign that denotes

the top of the pass. I couldn't quite

believe I had cycled the legendary

Galibier. I had followed where

Pantani had led. And I'd loved

every single minute of it.

That day on the Galibier sowed

an idea inside me. Of all the books

I had read none had taken the

famous climbs of the

race and described

what it felt like for a

normal person to ride

them. I wanted to go

and ride more of

t h e s e g r e a t

mountains, to follow

in the wheel-tracks

o f t h e r a c e ' s

greatest riders. I

w a n t e d t o s e e

w h e r e E u g e n e

Christophe had been forced to

mend his bike in a pyrenean forge

in 1913; where Wim Van Est had

careered off the Aubisque in 1951

before being rescued by his team. I

wanted to pay my respects to those

who had paid the ultimate price

on the mountains of the Tour: Tom

Simpson on the Ventoux and Fabio

Casertelli on the Portet d'Aspet. I

wanted to go to these places and

more. I wanted to ride them. And I

wanted to tell people what it was

like.

I t t o o k m e f i v e y e a r s t o

eventually pitch the idea to a

publisher but luckily the first one I

approached shared my enthusiasm

for the idea. I was left to pick 25 of

the Tour's greatest climbs and to go

and cycle up them. So last summer

I spent five weeks doing just that

and then another three months

writing about it. Naturally the

r i d i n g w a s t o u g h – t h e s e

mountains can be brutal - and

came not without incident: from

getting fogged in on the Tourmalet

to nearly being run off the road

by a huge plastic

container rolling

down the Joux-

Plane. But rarely is

anything worth

doing easy. I was

fulfilling a long-held

aim, chasing the

legends of the Tour

and writing about it.

And it was one of the

most rewarding things

I have ever done.

National Vegetarian Week20th - 26th May 2013IF YOu THINK that the slaughter

of around two million land animals

a day in the uK alone to put into

the food chain is far too many, you

may be considering vegetarianism.

If this is the case, it’s important to

find a way that suits you best.

If you don’t feel you can go

veggie all at once, that’s fine. Stop

and think about what you eat,

and feel good about what you are

doing to reduce your intake of

meat and fish. It’s not difficult to

be a vegetarian, but if you’ve

eaten meat all your life it is

different. You won’t be healthy if

you just swap meat or fish with

lots of dairy products for example.

Going vegetarian is exciting

and adventurous but it's also a

big step. The Vegetarian Society

helps with lots of advice and

resources for new veggies, you

can also find help, support and

yourself, and remember all the

you going. Makes 4 servings.

THE ENGLISH OBSESSION

with the weather continues with

me again this month. I write these

words just before the Easter

holiday and it is jolly cold but dry.

Not usually motorcycling weather

but I have done a few events since

Christmas and all have been held

in freezing conditions. Some have

been very well attended which is

a credit to those riders and

organisers.

Although Spring is officially

here I just wish it would perhaps

make an actual appearance soon.

Last weekend the Sunbeam Club

was to hold its annual Pioneer

Run, which is the motorcycling

equivalent of the London to

Brighton car run. Alas there was

snow and ice making the roads

dangerous, and so the organisers

had no option but to cancel the

event. A great shame when

entrants had travelled from

abroad and all over Britain to take

part, but safety must always be

paramount.

During May riding events and

club life really picks up. The

Somerset Section will have a

guest speaker at its club night on

the 2nd. On the 16th they have an

evening meet at Compton Dundon

and on the 26th they have the All

Day Breakfast Run from Spaxton.

Dorset also has a guest speaker

on the 8th and this is followed by

their biggest event of the year.

Starting on the 19th with the

W e y m o u t h R u n a n d t h e

18 THE VISITOR May 2013

Weymouth Week continues for

another five days of riding all over

the County of Dorset.

The WessexVet eran and

Vintage Section has its club night

on the 13th. Advance warning

now of the Ilminster Four Day

Festival which includes an old

vehicle show on the 9th June.

From 9am to 4pm this show

usually has around 100 cars and

bikes on display. For more details

Google the Ilminster Experience.

On the same day the Wells

Classic Motorcycle Club has its

Tortoise and Hare Run from the

Wells City Football Club. Two

routes enables a shorter run for

t h e e a r l y o r l o w p o w e r e d

machines (Tortoise) and a longer

route for the later faster machines

(Hares). This means everyone

should have an enjoyable ride so

why not give it a try? Further

details on all the above available

by ringing 01935-872528.

A s I t r a v e l a r o u n d t h e

countryside I am appalled at the

shocking state of our roads. Very

rough surfaces and potholes big

enough and deep enough to cause

danger to all road users, and

specially to us two wheeled riders.

I k n o w e v e r y g o v e r n m e n t

department is desperately short of

funds, or at least that’s what they

tell us, but when you consider the

amount of taxes raised from the

motor is t then i t seems we

motorists are getting a raw deal.

In my local area I know of

specific pieces of road where I

have to swerve around potholes

in the fashion of a slalom skier.

Anyone seeing me would assume

I am mental or drunk or perhaps

realise that I need to take these

actions to stay safe.

Now if I can see these potholes,

and you the motorist can see

them, then surely the powers that

be can see them as well. But have

they been filled and sorted – no.

Some potholes I am aware of are

very large and been there all the

winter, they are deep and could

easily cause an accident.

I am not suggesting we make a

fuss over every minor fault but

where an element of danger

creeps in then I would urge all

motorists to report these matters.

Most counties use the ‘Clarence’

scheme which is a scheme where

faults can be properly reported. I

suggest we should all make use of

this service in an attempt to get

the worst of these problems put

right.

When reporting such faults I

suggest you use words l ike

‘possible danger’ or ‘actual danger’

because I bel ieve the local

authority are then obliged to do

something about it, without such

words all you will see is the

proliferation of holes with white

paint sprayed around them.

Remember that even small

defects can quickly grow into

larger problems if left unattended,

so keep an eye on the situations.

Many classic clubs have a

problem enticing young people to

join. Perhaps it’s understandable

in that most seventeen year olds

want a scooter or small machine

for transport to college or work.

Financial constraints would

preclude other activities. As soon

as they are able most youngsters

promote themselves to four

wheels.

The real growth in motorcycling

is in the slightly older age bracket

of 35 to 50 when people are

generally more established and

perhaps the kids have flown the

nest and the mortgage has become

more manageable. Then is the

time that people can return to

motorcycling, probably not as a

means of everyday transport, but

more as a leisure and social

activity. It is these people that

classic clubs should be targeting

as potential new members.

The VMCC is actively pursuing

this age range with various

i n c e n t i v e s t o i n c r e a s e

membership. Most clubs have

seen a decline in membership over

the last ten years but luckily the

VMCC has seen numbers steadily

grow during this period.

One incentive which has proved

popular in recent years has been

our Vintage Training Days. On

these days anyone (member or

not ) providing they hold a

motorcycle driving licence can

attend a Vintage Training Day.

There is a small charge (to cover

insurance costs) and usually entry

is limited to about fifty persons

per session. Members provide a

suitable machine for use by the

students, and stay to provide

riding instructions, and to

superv i se the use o f the i r

machines.

There are usually 20 to 25

machines taken along and those

receiving instruction can go from

b i k e t o b i k e l e a r n i n g t h e

differences and gaining valuable

experience. Only machines made

before 1940 are used so all have

hand change gear selection and

most have lever throttles and

some have hand lubrication

pumps for the engines.

By doing these training days

we can encourage new members

to join our club and also encourage

existing members to ride the older

machines. Many experienced

motorcyclists are fascinated to

r ide b ikes us ing these o ld

fashioned types of controls. You

might want to give it a try.

My picture this month shows

two students having received

their instruction and now riding

round in circles to practice. I bet

every student has a smile from

ear to ear.

Aurora Care -More about HomeHome is very important to all of

us and there are few of us who

would choose to leave the home

we have known and loved for

many years. When the time

comes to do so , i t ’ s v i ta l ly

important to be able to make the

place we go to our home once

more. At Aurora Care we do

everything we possibly can to

help you make Hendford Care

Home your own home.

The room you choose is your

room. If you want to bring your

own furniture, we’ll remove ours

to make room for yours. If you

want to put up shelves, pictures

and so on, you’re welcome to do

so. We positively encourage you to

make holes in the walls! It’s your

space – you do as you choose with

it.

Please don’t ask us what the

visiting hours are – there aren’t

any. It’s your home – your visitors

come and go as you please. If your

relatives would like to take a

meal with you, just let us know

the day before. There’s no charge

– it’s entirely complimentary. And

by the way, telephone calls are

normal ly f ree o f charge at

Hendford Care Home as well.

But when all is said and done,

what makes home home, is how

you’re treated there. That’s why

we’re very choosy indeed about

the people we employ. Not

everyone at Hendford Care Home

starts out as an experienced

p e r s o n – s o m e g a i n t h e i r

experience with us and many

never leave us. But what we do

ensure is that everyone, from the

most junior to the most senior,

shares a vocation to care, to give

and to love. It’s what makes us

who we are.

The name of the trading estate off Station Road is a reminder that this was once the site of

Gillingham’s busy cattle market.

The arrival of the railway in

1859 is often said to have been the

making of Gillingham. The station

was built in open countryside some

distance to the south of the town,

away from any existing roads or

tracks, so it was necessary to

construct a new thoroughfare

linking it to Newbury near the

eastern end of what is now known

as the high Street. and Station

development.

think, the work of Sir William Tite

who designed the station buildings

opposite but a handsome building

nonetheless.

Completion of the much-needed

le Neubourg Way relief road in

1989 changed the face of Station

road, splitting it into two distinct

parts. Nowadays the road junction

is surrounded by retail outlets –

an aSDa supermarket and the

Original Factory Shop on the north

side, Bakers garage and car

dealership and a small modern

block of shops on the south. These

house Wheels, packed with bicycles

and cycling accessories, and the

918 Coffee Company. apparently

the business roasts its coffee beans

in one of the units at the Old

Market Centre just round the

corner. So Station road is once

again a hive of activity, and the

frequent train service to london

via Salisbury, andover and

Basingstoke ensures that there is a

steady stream of travellers walking

to and from the station. Off Station

homes have been built in recent

years on the odd-shaped plot of

land between the river Stour and

the railway line. handy for the

Gillingham existed for centuries

before the coming of the railway.

and fragments of the old town still

survive around the western end of

the high Street and beyond on

Wyke road. For example, behind

the Phoenix inn is South Street

which probably had its origins in

medieval times and was formerly

known as Back lane. here stands

the town’s 19th century lock-up, a

grim reminder of how offenders

were incarcerated before appearing

in court or being taken to jail. it

was in use until a new police

station opened in 1890. The

vicarage Schoolroom on Queen

Street appears to have medieval

stone walls and the parish church

of St Mary the virgin has stood on

the site overlooking The Square

since Saxon times although the

present building is the result of

extensive rebuilding in the 1830s.

Behind the church on Queen

Street near St Martin’s Square are

The Barton dating from the early

17th century and lime Tree house

which is early 18th century, and

opposite the bottom of Queen Street

stands the red lion inn, a former

coaching inn which in the 19th

century had its own brewhouse at

the back. and on The Square itself

is the Phoenix, originally an

important 17th century coaching

inn and now partly surviving as a

pub with a good reputation for food.

glossy Units – these are right on

trend at the moment. They reflect

lots of light therefore making a

small kitchen feel larger. if you

then chose a light glossy style

flooring this will exaggerate the

effect.

Muted Colour schemes – can

help make the kitchen feel much

bigger. Try to add light worktops

and neutral colours on the walls

and you could be pleasantly

surprised.

Variety of Materials – will give

on the worktops such as timber,

corian, silestone etc. adding a

glass splash back and / or up

stands will reflect the light even

more, making the kitchen feel

way of getting the clutter off of

magnificent.

The Moduleo range comprises

of both planks and tiles that can

be fixed either floating or glued

down. Because of their unique

structure, the Moduleo planks

and tiles stand out due to their

rigidity, their maintenance

friendliness and their natural

appearance. The high quality of

Moduleo’s planks and tiles make

them the ideal flooring solution

for both the residential and the

commercial market.

Moduleo goes to great lenghts

to ensure every floor will be

unique and will retain that

natural look. The number of

repetitions in the design must

therefore be kept to a minimum.

Thanks to the extra-long sizes

they use during the printing of

designs, these repetitions occur a

lot less frequently. Thus you can

generate a lot more variation

with the planks and tiles. The

result is a unique floor with as

much variation as the natural

material itself.

They apply a unique printing

technique, using a very fine dot

screen. This allows them to print

their designs razor-sharp, so it’s

almost impossible to tell the

difference from the real thing.

The planks and tiles have a

natural look and feel - this is

achieved by using a structure

press. The top layer of the tiles

feature a relief that accurately

recreates the subtle textures of

natural materials, allowing you

to feel wood grains and stone

grooves. The bevel at the edge of

each piece accentuates the planks

and tiles, contributing to the

natural appearance of your floor.

unlike traditional wood or

aMaziNG! a victory for common

sense some might have called it,

to actually do away with the beer

escalator which pushed the price

of yours and my pint up by 2%

over inflation every year. This

would have meant an extra 6p on

our pint. Not only is this now a

goner, but the price has been

reduced by a whole 1p per pint.

Or rather, it hasn’t. reason? Well

having just popped in for a pint at

m y l o c a l i w a s s o m e w h a t

surprised to find that the price

had been raised by 5p! Not a

fortune, one might think, but a

rise nevertheless. how did this

come about? Well, on quizzing our

landlady i discovered that the

b r e w e r y h a d t a k e n t h e

opportunity to stick 8p on top of a

pint, and our landlady, bless her –

had decided that that was too

much and made it 5p. i do not

hold her responsible in any shape

or form, indeed i sympathize, as

whilst the brewers may have had

increased costs in transport,

power, raw materials etc., so has

the pub, and there is a limit to

how much can be passed on. Oh,

and did i mention the demands of

brewery shareholders? indeed, an

added possibility. incidentally, the

duty escalator was invented by

the last government, so we can’t

b l a m e ‘ t h i s l o t ’ f o r i t .

Furthermore, in case you are

wondering, the duty on a £3.10

pint amounts to 50p, excise duty,

52p, vaT, and not to mention

employment tax of 18p and

business rates of 12p. This means

that since 2008 there has been a

40% rise in tax and more than a

third of the price of your pint is

now tax. Since 2004 duty has gone

up by over 50%, however, beer

duty revenue has only gone up by

10%, thanks to a drop of beer

consumption of 23%! Not only

this, but of course the result of

these rises has been that 7,800

pubs have closed and a staggering

the beer and pub sector continue

contributing over £6 billion a year

easy to see why beer is such an

cider and 12% spirits. 87% of that

beer is brewed in the uK, whereas

only 0.2% of wine comes from the

too. i understand that this has

been sold by the pubco to a

private buyer and i hope it will

not be long before we pay a visit

there again. Years ago it was

simply ‘Cat head’ and run by two

elderly sisters if i recall (anyone

help me out with more detail here

or is senility setting in?) There

was a curtain across the bar

(which you could look over!) Your

beer order was taken and then

the person serving would troll out

to the cellar (the next room) and

pour your beer from the cask. it

was quaint even then, which was

the late 1970’s and the last place

i paid under 50p for a pint!

see Backgammon being played

by a couple in the pub, which was

very crowded indeed and hence

we were unable to have more

than a brief exchange with the

players. This is a great pub

game, with tactics and skill, as

well as that element of luck, and

one only has to visit various

countries on holiday such as

Greece, Turkey, Thailand etc., to

see i t be ing p layed in the

The GarDeN is full of blossom!

But we are, by all accounts, three

weeks behind the natural season.

The long winter has eaten into our

precious spring! it is a bit of a

shaker to think that the longest

day is only a matter of 6 weeks

away and that we are still looking

at relatively low soil temperatures.

i am writing this without knowing

exactly what the weather will be

like when you read so please

forgive me if nothing matches up

with reality. But that's the way it

goes. i have a day in the garden

today and there is very little

growing yet. The soil is more or

less ready to sow and i'm dodging

in and out between some really

heavy rain showers which is not

unusual for this time of year. all in

all nature will catch up and bring

everything into line at some point;

day length is absolutely fixed and

there's no way of fooling the earth

in its orbit to get extra days of

summer.

New shoots have developed, and

the spring flowering Daphne,

Forsythia, prunus and viburnums

have done their bit. The earlier

cold prolonged their display to

some extent. The same is true for

many spring bulbs which has

compensated for some of the long

cold spell.

Weeds are still growing; some

real deep rooted perennials which

must be dug out as well as annual

seedlings that can be easily hoed

off. i want to garden as ethically as

i can with lots of organic matter

and the minimum of artificial

fertilisers or sprays being used. i do

keep a spray bottle of roundup

handy so that i can zap the hard to

reach and difficult weeds.

Plant of the monthPetunia! a really very popular and

widely planted genus, which

originated from South america,

and is closely related to the humble

potato. Petunias are ideal basket

and container plants which can

flower all summer long providing

that you dead head them regularly.

Petunias come in a variety of

blooms including single and

double, ruffled or smooth petals.

They can be striped, veined or solid

in colour, with mounding or

cascading habits. Most of the

petunias sold today are hybrids

developed for specific design

purposes such as fragrance. The

two oldest types of petunias are

grandifloras and multifloras. Both

types are mounding in their habit

of growth, grandiflora has larger

flowers whilst the multifloras

perform better in wet conditions.

Spreading type petunias which

include the ‘Surfinia’ series are

some of the most popular petunias

because they do not need dead

heading and they can be used as

bedding plants, groundcovers or

trailing in containers and hanging

baskets.

fact an entirely different species.

Petunias can be grown in blocks,

or mixed with other bedding

plants to produce a vibrant range

of colour and flower shapes. They

need full sun and can tolerate a

wide range of soils. Multipurpose

compost is suitable when growing

petunias in containers. They are

not frost tolerant, so only put them

out once all danger of frost has

passed. They are useful in so many

ways, tubs and baskets as well as

borders. They mostly do best in

warm sunny weather so fingers

crossed we get some!

Don't drown it but keep it moist.

to be night frost in May in this

part of the world so French beans,

safe although young plants

leeks and winter brassicas

Potatoes should be growing

away well now. last year was

one of the most difficult for this

important crop; prolonged wet

weather allowed blight to get a

hold. it is best if plants have

space between them to allow the

air to carry disease spores away,

and that if you do water then do

so early in the day rather than

leave wet leaves overnight. That

applies to pretty well most plants

you might grow.

Disease control is limited to a

preventative copper spray that

prevents the blight spores from

getting into the leaves, or removing

any diseased leaves as soon as you

see them. i do think it is worth

persevering with potatoes; prices

have gone through the roof this

year and that effect will probably

be felt for quite a while.

There is still time to plant out

dahlias. They do best with a decent

helping of compost and will flower

until the frosts come in late

autumn.

The lawn should have had an

all over weed, feed and moss

treatment to get it into shape. i

try to avoid mowing too tight as

that is the single most likely way of

getting a mossy lawn rather than a

nice green grassy one! if you have

killed the moss and raked it out,

then over sow with a general

purpose grass seed mix to thicken

the remaining lawn.

Finally in the fruit garden,

protect pear blossom if we do get a

sudden frost (use fleece again) and

prepare protection for bush and

soft fruit from bird damage.

Keep a hoe near the back door so

whenever you walk round the veg

or flower garden you can hoe a bit

at a time - it really makes a

difference to keeping the weeds

under control. hope you make it

through the month!

PaPeRchaSeThe Blackmore Vale Magazine

team in Stalbridge appears to be

on to a winner. last October it

launched a new free monthly

called Gillingham Matters,

published in much the same

format as the BVM except that it

is a5 size rather than a4 and

considerably slimmer at just 48

pages. it must have proved

successful because hot on its heels

in april has come Shaftesbury

Matters. i haven’t seen a copy yet,

but i’m told it will carry news of

the town council and local groups,

articles about local people and a

directory of local traders, services

and businesses. i wish it well, but

i remember with some sadness

the demise of the Fosse Way

Magazine in the autumn of 2011.

While it never grew to the size of

i ts parent Blackmore Vale

Magazine it was always an

informative, authoritative and

entertaining read. i know that

recent years have been hard for

weekly freebies but i had thought

that the BVM was generating

enough profit to see the Fosse Way

Magazine through these hard

times.

early in 2012 Glastonbury-

based publisher John Price

launched a replacement Fosse and

Mendip News as a free fortnightly

magazine and i’ve been watching

its progress with interest. i’ve just

seen the 14th March issue and

can report that it runs to 40

pages, is printed on heavy paper,

makes plenty of use of colour and

contains some interesting features

and a useful ‘What’s happening’

listing that provides plenty of

detail. it is really quite good but it

can’t be cheap to print and

distribute, so there must be

sufficient advertising revenue to

be drawn from its circulation area

to allow it to survive where the

Fosse Way Magazine failed.

What does the word ‘victory’

m e a n t o y o u ? T h e O x f o r d

reference Dictionary has it as the

‘process of defeating an opponent

in a contest’, and Chambers

states simply ‘a contest gained’

with a ‘victor’ being ‘a winner in a

contest’. So what do you make of

this report in the 3rd april issue

of the Western Daily Press of a

visit to Taunton by ukip leader

Nigel Farage? ‘Still elated from

t h e p a r t y ’ s v i c t o r y i n t h e

eastleigh by-election, he jumped

on a s tone bench and to ld

supporters: “We are launching

the biggest-ever domestic election

campaign for ukip”.’ Coming

second in a by-election and

relegating the Conservative into

t h i r d p l a c e i s i n d e e d a n

achievement, but coming second

in a by-election is not a victory.

Coming first is a victory, and the

victor was the liberal Democrat,

much as the reporter and the

proprietors of the newspaper

would like readers to think

otherwise.

The 28th February issue of the

Western Gazette carried an advert

proclaiming that ‘we’ve teamed

up with lynx Café in Yeovil to

treat readers to a warming cup of

tea or coffee absolutely free’ and

telling them to ‘simply hand in

this voucher to staff at lynx Café’

to claim their free drink. if they

did they would have been in for a

rude awakening – the voucher

a l s o s t a t e s ‘ C l o s i n g d a t e :

observant Yeovil reader who

spotted this howler and sent it to
