STRAIGHT FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH: By: Tom Horstick
I'm sitting at my desk "recovering" from Homecoming Week! We had a great week and I appreciate everyone's willingness to jump in and help. A special thanks
goes out to our Booster Club. As you probably know they sponsor a huge parade and pep rally on Wednesday of homecoming week. It rotates between the four communities and this year was held in Princeton. I believe this is the 6th year that we have held this event. It has become one of the newest "great traditions" at CHHS. Many people volunteered their time, resources, food, and equipment to make it happen. So, thanks to the booster club, city of Princeton, and all of the patrons that came out to support. I'm also including an article that I ran across. As a parent of four children it really made me step back and think. Parenting has to be one of the hardest jobs in the world!! Thank you for sending us such great kids to work with. I consider it a privilege to work and interact with our CHHS students on a daily basis. Thanks for being a supporting community. As always, if you have any questions, give me a call at the office. IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A VIKING!
Julie Lythcott-Haims noticed a disturbing trend during her decade as a dean of freshmen at Stanford University. Incoming students were brilliant and accomplished and virtually flawless, on paper. But with each year, more of them seemed incapable of taking care of themselves.
At the same time, parents were becoming more and more involved in their children’s lives. They talked to their children multiple times a day and swooped in to personally intervene anytime something difficult happened. From her position at one of the world’s most prestigious schools, Lythcott-Haims came to beloved that mothers and fathers in affluent communities have been hobbling their children by trying so hard to make sure they succeed, and by working so diligently to protect them from disappointment and failure and hardship.

Such “overhelping” might assist children in developing impressive resumes for college admission. But also robs them of the chance to learn who they are, what they love and how to navigate the world, Lythcott-Haims argues in her book “How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success.”
We want so badly to help them by shepherding them from milestone to milestone and by shielding them from failure and pain. But overwhelming causes harm, “she writes. “It can leave young adults without the strengths of skill, will and character that are needed to know themselves and to craft a life.
Lythcott-Haims is one of the growing number of writers - including Jessica Lahey (“The Gift of Failure”) and Jennifer Senior (“All Joy and No Fun: The Paradox of Modern Parenthood”) - who are urging stressed-out helicopter parents to breathe and loosen their grip on their children.
“Don’t call me a parenting expert,” she said in an interview. “I’m interested in humans thriving, and it turns out that overparenting is getting in the way of that.”
She cites reams of statistics on the rise of depression and other mental and emotional health problems among the nation’s young people. She has seen the effects up close: Lythcott-Haims lives in Palo Alto, Calif., a community that, following a string of suicides in the past year, has undertaken a period of soul-searching about what parents can do to stem the pressure that young people face.
Her book tour is taking her to more school auditoriums and parent groups than bookstores. She tells stories about over-involved mothers and fathers, and shares statistics about rising depression and other mental health problems in young people, that she hopes will spark change in communities around the country where helicopter parents are making themselves, and their kids, miserable.
“Our job as a parent is to put ourselves out of a job, “She said. “We need to know that our children have the wherewithal to get up in the morning and take care of themselves.”
So are you a helicopter parent? Here are some of Lythcott-Haims’ simple tests: Check your language. “If you say ‘we’ when you mean your son or daughter as in, ‘We’re on the travel soccer team’ - it’s a hint to yourself that you are intertwined in a way that is unhealthy,” Lycott-Haims said.
Examine your interactions with adults in your child’s life. If you’re arguing with teachers and principals and coaches and umpires all the time, it’s a sign you’re a little too invested,” she said. “When we’re doing all the arguing, we are not teaching our kids to advocate for themselves.”
Stop doing their homework. Enough said.
And how can parents help their children become self-sufficient? Teach them the skills they’ll need in real life, and give them enough leash to practice those skills on their own, Lythcott-Haims said. And have them do chores. “Chores build a sense of accountability. They build like skills and work ethic.
Lythcott-Haims said many parents ask how they can unilaterally de-escalate in what feels like a college-admission arms race. How can they relax about getting their child into Harvard if every other parent is going full speed ahead?
She said colleges could help tamp down on the admissions craze by going test-optional, leaving it up to students whether to submit SAT or ACT scores. And perhaps top-tier schools could agree to limit the number of such schools that each student may apply to she, said.
She urges families to think more broadly about what makes for a “good” college. There are excellent educational experiences to be had at schools that aren’t among U.S. News and World Report’s top 20, she says, and there are schools that will accept students who don’t have a perfect resume.
Parents need to see that even children who succeed in doing the impossible - getting into Stanford, or Harvard, or other elite schools - beat the scats of the admissions arms race.
“They’re breathless,” Lythcott-Haims said. “They’re brittle; they’re old before their time.

WORDS FROM WELCH:
By: Buddy Welch
We have had a great start to the school year. We started our S.T.R.I.P.E.S program back up in August. S.T.R.I.P.E.S sands for Service, Trust, Respect, Integrity, Pride, Excellence, and Self Discipline. We encourage our students to show
all the characteristics of STRIPES on a daily basis. The recipient's for August were: Chris Burris, Hunter Butler, Taryn Compton, Emma Jumet, Briannah Lickteig, Josie Stottlemire, AnneLeese Thao, and Drake Weber.
MAP Assessment The MAP Assessment is a computerized adaptive assessment in reading and math that lets the teachers distinguish where your child exceeds and areas that your child may need help in. We have tested all middle school students and will be going over their results soon.

From Outside the Circle:
By: Pat Vining [email protected]
This issue’s column features two CH grads who were originally from opposite sides of the district and who now live on opposite sides of the country – Virginia and California. That covers the East and West sides of the United States, and next time you’ll hear from grads who live in the North and South. Chris (Hutchison) Chambers loved everything about school and learning when she was at Central Heights. A 1987 grad, she received a degree in respiratory therapy from Washburn University in 1990 and first worked at The University of Kansas Medical Center. Moving to Virginia in 1991, she continued that profession in the neonatal and pediatric ICU at Georgetown University, work she thoroughly enjoyed because she could help children and their parents. But, feeling a need for a career change, she earned a BS in computer information systems from Strayer University and then worked for defense contractors SAIC and GTE, followed by seven years with Lockheed Martin. In these positions, she provided support for various missions for the military and intelligence communities. Chris’ most notable experience was being in the Pentagon on 9/11 (2001) when the plane attacked that huge building. (Note: the Pentagon covers 27 acres and has 17.5 miles of corridors.) As Chris recalls that fateful day: “While on assignment to Pen-Ren (Pentagon Renovation), I was working on that day which, up to then, was a typical work day. We were on the opposite side of the building where the plane crashed in. We heard no explosions or warnings. We were told to exit the building because we were ‘under attack,’ but had no idea it had already occurred until we were outside the building. It was a long day of standing, walking around, trying to figure out where to go. Several hours later, I was able to catch a ride home with a complete stranger. There was no other way home. My personal belongings were still in the Pentagon so I couldn’t catch a cab, and my usual method of commuting, the metro, was shut down.” Certainly an experience she’ll never forget!
After their second son was born in 2008, Chris decided she wanted to have more time with her children and took a long-term leave of absence. “Since then, the boys have grown into fine young men and we’ve been on an incredible, rewarding home school journey the past four years,” she explained. She’s a ‘Hockey Mom’ and thoroughly enjoys both home schooling and the boys’ sports.
Chris, her husband Dave, a West Point Academy grad who now works for a government agency, NGA, live in Manassas, VA, and enjoy museums, the changing of seasons, being close to nature, the ocean, and cities with all the culture they offer within a few hours.
7
From Outside the Circle Cont.
Returning to visit her family and friends every summer, Chris is another grad who drives past CH and shows her sons where she went to school. She wants them to know about Kansas and their roots in this area, as well as about all other parts of this wonderful country. *** *** *** *** *** ***
It’s a long way from rural Rantoul, KS, and Central Heights to . . .let’s say Thailand, Rome, Paris, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Malta, and many other exotic places. But those are all on the travel itinerary of Brett Beach, 1981 grad. His position as a compliance officer with American Investors, one of the largest investment companies in the world, allows him to be a true bon vivant, which is French for someone with cultivated, refined and sociable taste, especially with respect to food and beverages. Yes, that describes Brett perfectly! He didn’t go far from home following high school, though, just to Ottawa University to earn a degree in business administration. His first job was with Pepsi Co, then it was to Minneapolis, where he first worked in the investment business and developed a passion for city life. “I love to travel, eat great food and make new friends around the globe. My current favorite vacation spot is Istanbul. I’ve been there three times in the last two years. It’s an amazing city…has history, culture, food, and I’ve made many new friendships there,” said Brett from his loft in a 103-year-old renovated building in downtown Los Angeles. “I lived by the ocean most of my 18 years in L.A. I don’t surf or swim but love being AT the ocean, more of a nice restaurant kind of fella. But about two years ago, I moved downtown, where I work. I gave up my car and walk 10 mins. to work now. It’s great, and better for my carbon footprint.” However, his work, not world travel, does take most of his time and since Brett is such a good ‘people person,’ he enjoys nearly every minute of his responsibilities. We didn’t ask what he does when he finds someone isn’t in compliance, or following all the rules and regulations. Maybe it’s something like when he didn’t follow the rules his mom, Peg Beach, had as she raised three sons, or like Mrs. Beach had for 26 years in her CH third grade classroom (1981-2007). But back to Brett’s travel list, he said he loves Hawaii, Malta, Santorini, and Mykonos, Greece, Puerto Rico and Mexico (minus the hurricanes and earthquake) and…..numerous other places. “The Colosseum in Rome and the Parthenon in Athens are truly beautiful sights to see,” he said, and there are many other places he could list. New York City is his favorite place to go on a business trip, followed by Boston and Philadelphia. He revels in the history of places like those. But Kansas does beckon him back yearly, to visit family and friends and attend class reunions. He remembers Central Heights had some of the best hot lunches anywhere, back in his time, and credits wonderful, caring teachers at CH for helping him become the person he is today. Have a great trip, Brett…..wherever it may be this time!
