Wishing you all a

warm welcome to

the May edition of

‘The Viewer’

Hope you all had a good Easter and

now with the lighter nights and summer

days on the horizon, wouldn’t it be nice

to get jobs done in the garden? On

pages 10 and 32 you will find tips on

what needs doing in the garden at this

time of year. Or if you prefer some help

by a professional gardener, there are

several local companies within the

magazine that can offer their services.

Also this month we are supporting

several charity events, such as:

The Cycle Sandwich Challenge in aid of

Sue Ryder, a Fund Raising Concert in

aid of East Anglia’s Children Hospice

(EACH) and a Summer Party raising

money for both Sue Ryder and EACH.

There is also the launch of the sale of a

colourful wristband to help raise the

profile, awareness of EACH in addition

to vital funds.

The ‘Villages of Rockingham Forest

Bike Ride is back this year in aid of The

British Heart Foundation and also Sue

Ryder’s celebration of 60 years of care

around the world.

So please turn to pages 6, 12, 36

and 40 for details on how you can

support these great charities with either,

sponsorship, taking part or by simply

buying a wristband. Any support

you can offer would be very much

appreciated as every penny helps!!!

On that note, I wish you all a great

month and hope you enjoy reading the

May issue.

Until next time!

The Cycle Sandwich Challenge

in aid of Sue Ryder

Between 21st and 26th May, while most of us will be preparing for the long bank holiday weekend, three intrepid men will be completing the self styled ‘Cycle Sandwich’.

For David Todd, Martyn Bolam and Graham Motley the Cycle Sandwich consists of a 460 mile cycle ‘sandwiched’ between a 5 mile swim and the Edinburgh Marathon. Starting near Peterborough, the three friends will swim the 5 miles down the river Nene and then cycling all the way to Edinburgh before completing the marathon in aid for local

charity .

The three friends have been training hard and are ready for the big challenge. “This year’s challenge is going to combine every bit of effort my body can muster.” Martyn said. “I am training hard each week, I expect a lot of pain but hopefully it will be worth it

when I cross the finishing line on 26th May!”

David Todd, Technical Services Manager at Ken Stimpson Community School, admitted: “I run quite often, have cycled a bit, but the furthest I think I’ve ever swum is about a quarter of a mile, not five!”

Supported by their families, friends and communities, David, Martyn and Graham hope to raise a significant amount of money for Sue Ryder. “This challenge is going to push me far beyond anything I’ve done before,” said Graham, Finance Manager at Peterborough United Football Club, “and whilst I aim to, just once, have someone mistake me for a footballer, I’ll also be raising as much money as possible for a very worthy cause, Sue Ryder”.

Sandwich, please visit their website

Gardening

H owever much effort you make with

your garden, you can be sure that

there will still be a few things that

look awful. You may have made (or hope

to make) beautiful borders, sensational

shrubbery and lots more besides, but how

do you cope with those things you just

cannot seem to hide?

A washing line may be essential but

rarely adds to the appeal of the garden. If

yours consists of two large poles with a line

in between, try growing a pretty climber up

the poles. If you use a self-clinging plant

such as variegated ivy it won’t need any

additional support. Alternatively make a

chicken wire, trellis ‘box’ or frame around

the posts and then allow the climber to

scramble up, using plant ties if necessary.

Summer flowering clematis or sweet pea will

look great too. If you do use a more

vigorous climber then be prepared to do

some intermittent pruning. Decrepit sheds or moth-eaten garages

can be a real eyesore. Sometimes a

thorough scrub of the walls will do the trick,

or why not make a feature out of the shed

or garage and re-paint it. Consider erecting

a trellis on one or more of the vertical

surfaces and grow a selection of favourite

climbers up it to make an even more

attractive feature. If the garden can be a

little gloomy then it helps if you paint any

surfaces such as garage or shed walls with

a paler colour.

If your heating is fuelled by gas from an

unattractive and enormous cylinder or oil

from a large green tank, you will know that

they have to be sited in an accessible

position. You can use hazel wattle hurdles

to hide them which are perfect as they also

match with the adjacent boundary fence.

Try using standard fence panels in the same

way and again planting them with climbers

or scramblers will help. Whatever you do,

make sure that you check on it from time to

time and remove excessive climber growth

so that the tank remains accessible.

Is it the neighbouring garden that

harbours the eye sore which makes you

want to retreat back into your house?

Something nasty next door is of course even

harder to conceal but why not add a layer

of trellis to the top of your existing fence

and then use climbers once it is in position.

Hold the trellis in position using batons of

wood attached to the existing fence posts

or special post-joining metal sleeves that

you can buy from your fencing supplier or

garden centre. Trellis is available in a range

of shapes and need not be straight edged

so you can create a range of different looks to suit your gardening style. Another option

is to erect a pergola or arch to obscure or

break up an unsightly view or the eyesore in

the neighbour’s garden and adding plants

will help to add a bit more height & soften

the outline. If you combine some of your

favourite flowering climbers with some ever-

green planting too, you should even achieve

good effects during the seasons when

the leaves have fallen from many plants.

An EACH band

for your hand

E ast Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has launched a new wristband to raise vital funds and awareness for the charity. EACH support families

and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

The EACH wristbands are in the charity’s branded purple and orange colours and feature the EACH logo. They’ll be on sale online, in EACH shops and at fundraising events.

Melanie Chew, EACH Director of Fundraising, said: “We’re really pleased with the new wristbands and are confident they’ll be popular with our supporters. They’re a great way to raise funds and because they’re really colourful they’ll be noticed and help us to raise the profile and awareness of EACH too.”

The wristbands are available from the EACH website www.each.org.uk/wristband and cost £1.50 including postage and packaging. They will also be sold in EACH shops and at events for £1.

The launch of the wristbands follows the success of The EACH Bracelet which was designed by Ed Sheeran’s mum Imogen, features orange and purple ‘smartie-style’ beads and retails at £10. The EACH Bracelet was worn by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge when she visited The Treehouse in March last year which boosted sales.

For more information about EACH, including forthcoming events and how you can help

raise funds, visit www.each.org.uk or call the Cambridgeshire team on: 01223 205180.

Does life have to be a pain?

Described as "One of the best kept

secrets on the health and beauty

scene" (Jane Alexander, Daily Mail

Saturday). What is this secret, you

may be wondering?

P soriasis, eczema, dermatitis, acne, circulatory problems like Raynauds

disease. Immune difficiency and a multitude of other problems are being treated by this secret, which has slowly been gaining itself a big enough reputation, so that an entire department in St George’s hospital in London has been dedicated to its training and use for patients. So again, what is this secret?

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a fast growing area of massage – and one that uses the lightest of touch. Developed by Dr Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid in the 1920’s and 30’s, the technique is renowned in the world of lymphology. It’s effects are wide ranging. The Lymphatic system has been known about since 1654 as "A system which purifies the body and regulates irritation, like inflammation, swelling and oedema”.(Thomas Bartholin), it explains how it combats many skin conditions and circulatory problems. It behaves similarly to a TENS machine reducing pain.

Because the lymphatic system is directly connected with the bodies immune system, it helps in preparation for operations, it reduces healing time, post operations and because of that, scar tissue, even in the case of some burns, is kept at a minimum but it can also help in breaking down old scar tissue. (A cautionary note here is, one can never guarantee what degree of change is possible in severely effected skin tissue).

The lymph vessels are tiny and are found directly underneath the skin. They are stimulated by a stretching of the skin. Once the vessels at skin level are activated, a suction effect is triggered at the neck, where the lymph system meets normal circulation, and gets eliminated by the blood.

MLD is not only therapeutic in it’s ability, it also has intensely relaxing effects, which often masks the strength of the treatment itself. Having used it, I have witnessed it

improve acne in five treatments, reduce arthritic swelling and prevent threatened amputation of digits in the feet. It has no need of oils or powders, so its good on skins sensitive to topical products, its non invasive and one of its beneficial side effects is that because it clears fluid and has a tightening effect on the skin it aids in weight loss and lifts muscle, so reduces wrinkles and dampens the appearance of cellulite. It is one of the safest massages to use during pregnancy. The power of manipulating the lymphatic system is that profound it forms the cornerstone of something known as complex decongestive therapy used to treat lymphoedema and lipoedema.

For more information on this topic you can

contact the ‘British Lymphology Society’ or

the UK body which aims to regulate the

therapy, ‘MLD UK’. You can contact

Fostering a Future

A fter raising a family of their own, Jenny and her husband decided to embark on a life-changing journey to extend their care to other children.

“Having worked in childcare for my whole career, it was actually one of the city council’s social workers who suggested George and I consider fostering,” Jenny said.

“With our own children all grown up, we could practically start again and dedicate our time to children who need us; it’s a really rewarding job. Getting through the process took a little while, but then one day we were approved and the next we had three children living with us!”.

Since 2004, Jenny and George have fostered around 26 children and they aren’t showing signs of stopping just yet.

Peterborough currently has over 300 children in care. Can you give these children a future by providing them with a safe and happy home while they are unable to live with their own families?

You can foster if you are single, married or in a civil partnership, or have children of your own or not. The only requirement is for you to have a genuine interest in supporting children, a spare bedroom, patience and a sense of humour.

Peterborough City Council values the contribution that foster carers make in caring for the city’s most vulnerable children and in recognition you will receive a high level of support and training, a fee and a weekly allowance for each child that is fostered.

If you have the time to make a child feel wanted and an important part of your life for as long as they are in your care, visit www.peterboroughfostering.co.uk or call Peterborough City Council’s fostering team on 01733 317427. Names and images changed.

From the Nene to the Nile!

I n October 2011 Jade Ramm, Sixth Form

student at Nene Park Academy was

so inspired by an F.A. Football Futures

camp that she had attended in

Hereford in the Summer that she decided

to set-up a ‘POSH Leaders’ programme in

Peterborough to encourage and inspire

local youngsters from ages 12-22 to

become involved in all of the non-playing

aspects of football, such as coaching,

refereeing and game promotions.

Jade said “When I came home after the

camp it became apparent to me that

there was nothing like this in Peterborough

and so I decided to launch the ‘POSH

Leaders’ organisation which, most

importantly, would be something that

would appeal to everyone, irrespective

of their own sporting capabilities.”

Jade contacted Hampton Football Club

and began to set-up some new projects

for the club, and this has continued to

date with the POSH Leaders programme

running a variety of fun events throughout

the school holidays, as well as organising

courses and workshops for the youngsters.

The POSH leaders programme is so

successful that Jade now mentors 6 other

POSH Leaders who support over 35 local

youngsters with their development.

Since its launch in 2011 Jade has won

numerous awards such as an

‘Outstanding Achievement’ Award in the

2012 F.A. Football Futures Recognition

Awards and the ‘Young Volunteer of the

Year’ Award by Huntingdonshire F.A. In

recognition of Jade’s hard work and

dedication, she was selected from more

than 4,000 young people to represent the

Football Futures Programme, and visited

Rwanda in February 2013 in a all-expenses

paid trip sponsored by the F.A.

Jade explained ”My trip to Rwanda was

amazing; it was a great experience and I

am very grateful to the F.A. to have

chosen me for this wonderful opportunity.

The week was truly inspirational and I

loved it. We ended up coaching around

850 children (an awful lot more than the

400 or so that

was originally

planned) but

all that meant

was that we

were able to

make an even

bigger impact

and make a

difference to

even more

people - which

is very heart

warming!”

Monthly Pet Tips! Fleas

As the weather warms up outside it’s not just

the plants that start springing into action, flea

activity will also soon be on the rise outdoors,

but did you know that fleas can infest your

pet all year round?

Adult fleas feed and reproduce on animals,

but when their eggs are laid they fall off into

the environment where they will hatch in

warm humid environments. Yes, fleas love

central heating, and they are so resilient that

they can remain protected in the cocoon

stage for up to 30 weeks under certain

conditions, before they are stimulated to

hatch! This is why Vets recommends

preventative treatment all year round.

How do pets get fleas?

Cats and dogs can pick fleas up from wildlife

as well as from their domesticated friends, so

they don’t need to be in contact with

another flea infested pet to get them.

What are the signs a pet has fleas? Flea bites usually cause itching, but some animals are hypersensitive to flea bites and will develop very sore skin quickly, even after a single bite. It is sometimes possible to see fleas moving in the animals coat or it might be possible to find black specks of ‘flea dirt’ (the flea poo) - a sure sign of infestation.

How do you prevent your pet getting fleas? There are a variety of good products that will prevent fleas and break their lifecycle, unfortunately there are also a whole load of products that are sold as flea treatments that only kill adult fleas. As a Vet it’s always really upsetting when fleas are found on a pet whose owners has diligently been applying a treatment that only kills the adult fleas and does not prevent the production of eggs.

How do you get rid of fleas on my pet if they already have them? We recommend flea treatments only licensed for sale from Vets that will treat the full life cycle of the flea by making adult fleas in fertile so that eggs laid before they circum to the effects of the flea treatment, will not hatch.

How do you get rid of fleas in my home? If your pet adopts a flea from one of their chums at the park, they will carry it back home and eggs will drop from your pet onto the carpet, sofa or your pet’s bed and pretty soon you’ll have a whole family of fleas calling your place home. If your pet is treated with an over the counter product only available from your Vets that will contain an ingredient that is continually excreted through your pets skin that kill fleas when they reach the larvae stage.

If your home already have a flea infestation you will need to treat your home with a household flea spray to eliminate them from the carpets and soft furnishing. Clothing, bedding etc.. will also all need thoroughly washing and you may need to evacuate the house for a few hours while the fumes settle.

To ensure your pet and home is fully protected against fleas and other parasites speak to your Vets or book a free flea check at a Best Friends Vets near you.

LAWN CARE IN MAY

Mowing Mow at least once a week now. Make sure mower has been serviced and blade replaced or sharpened. Mow at 1”.

Fertiliser This is the time to feed and weed (preferably in that order). The fertiliser is predominately Nitrogen in a slow release form, but it may also need Phosphate and Potassium as well as vital trace elements.

Weed Control Once the weeds and grass are actively growing a selective herbicide to kill broad leaved weeds such as dandelions, daisies and clover within the grass can be applied.

Patio/Driveway Weed Control Ask about our Special Extra Strong Treatment Weeds can look unsightly at this time of year in patios and driveways. We can spray a total weed killer to kill them and keep weed free for up to 6 months.

Irrigation If hot and dry, water once per week and soak grass to prevent it turning brown.

Actions required in May • Mow lawn at least once per week • Apply Spring Feed

• Spray Weeds in lawn with Selective Herbicide

• Spray drive/path/patios with total

herbicide to keep weed free for summer • Irrigate lawn in dry spells

Some of the above tasks can be car-ried out by the lawn owner; other tasks may need some professional

intervention.

New Premises for Riva Restaurant

I talian restaurant Riva has announced the

location of its new home. Having moved

out of the Key Theatre building at the end

of March, the independent eatery will be

opening for business at the beginning of

May from Peterborough Road, Eye, the

building previously occupied by Toscanini

Restaurant.

Owner Chris Falco said: “Moving out of The

Key Theatre was a time of mixed emotions;

sad to be drawing a line under four

wonderful years there, but excited to be

moving on to bigger and better things. This

move gives us a wonderful building with a

rich history dating back to the late 19th

century. It allows us to offer our dining

experience to a larger number of customers

but still providing an intimate ambience.

We are just three miles from our old location,

literally a five minute drive from the city

centre.”

The business has built a large and very

loyal customer base, and points to its

independence, unique menu and

attention to customer service as

reasons for its growing success over the

last four years.

Mr Falco concluded: “We are excited

to at last be the sole occupants of our

premises, allowing us to make it

whatever we want it to be. The free

car parking is an added bonus. We

believe Riva can now offer customers

our ‘true taste of Italy’ without the

hassle of trekking into the city centre.”

The official launch date will

appear on the Riva website

HOSPITAL AT HOME!

What is Hospital at Home?

THE HOSPITAL AT HOME FRIENDS GROUP

Registered Charity No. 284933

T he Hospital at Home Service is a unique

concept in home hospital care.

Patients, in certain circumstances, may

be given the choice of being nursed in

hospital or in their own home. All Patients in

the Peterborough, Whittlesey and Oundle

areas are eligible providing that the GP,

District Nursing Sister/Charge Nurse and

Carer if applicable, will accept responsibility

for the patient and that the patient fits the

simple criterion, which is:

Without Hospital At Home, The Patient Would

Be In Hospital

The fact that patients need not be parted

from their family or familiar surroundings

has proved beneficial to a speedier

recovery. We do nurse a proportion of

terminally ill patients who can remain at

home surrounded by their love ones.

There is nothing for the patient /

family to pay

The Hospital at Home Friends Group is a

registered charity that raises funds to pay

for nursing hours for the Hospital at Home

Service. One of their many fund raising

activities is a 200 Club. Members pay

£1.00 per month and, while helping the

Service, can win a substantial cash prize.

T here’s no doubt that when your hair looks great you feel fantastic, but as we’re all trying to cut down on our

monthly spend these days, it can be hard to justify visits to your stylist in between your regular cut and colour.

So, because we don’t want you to compromise on looking and feeling good, we’ve compiled a guide that will help you to achieve a professional-looking blow-dry at home - saving you a trip to the hairdressers and some extra cash.

Wash and Go It’s really important to think carefully before buying shampoo and conditioner. You need to assess your hair’s needs and select products that will work with your hair to achieve the look you want.

If your hair is dry, brittle and straw-like, you’ll need a shampoo and conditioner that will add much-needed moisture to your locks, leaving them manageable and supple when you come to style your hair.

Coloured hair - particularly red shades, as they fade so fast - requires a specialist shampoo and conditioner that won’t strip away your hue, but will instead pamper it and prolong the time between colours.

It is worth investing in quality products for your hair, because cheap shampoos

tend to contain harsh ingredients that strip the natural oils and remove your artificial colour in no time.

Although you pay a lot more at the time of purchase, you’ll find that good shampoos and conditioners last a lot longer, because you don’t need to use

so much of them. Be prepared not to see much lather when you wash though; professional products don’t behave the same way as cheaper versions because their ingredients are better.

Always ask your stylist for advice - they know the products they sell well. Because they use them every day, on

all different hair types, they’ll know what will work best for yours.

Ready to Blow Once you’ve washed your hair, wrap it in a towel and leave it for a short time, so that it’s damp rather than dripping wet when you start to dry it.

Don’t be tempted to rub your hair with the towel, as this encourages frizz and can cause damage; instead, gently squeeze out the moisture.

Next, lightly brush through your hair using a good brush - natural bristles are best. Keep an eye on plastic varieties, because over time plastic bristles tend to break and can snag and pull at your hair, resulting in split ends and dam-age.

Remember that your tresses are at their weakest when wet, so take time to detangle the lengths and don’t be tempted to pull. If you find that your locks are prone to knotting, use a detangling spray to make the process easier.

Section your hair using clips, even if it’s relatively short. This allows you to move systematically through your lengths. Start at the bottom of your hair first, moving to the top of your head last.

Whilst your hair is damp apply a little oil or serum to the lengths and ends of each section to lock in moisture and add much-needed shine.

Dry Like a Professional Using a round barrel brush - this helps to

create volume and lift - start drying the

first section, roots first. Keep your dryer about six inches away from your scalp, so that the heat isn’t too intense. Use your brush to grip and pull hair taut in the direction you want it to go.

If your hair is very fine or weak, use a cooler setting on your dryer so that you minimise the damage caused by the heat. A thermal protecting spray will help to safeguard your locks too. Whatever your hair type, always remember to use a good quality heat protecting product when straightening or curling your tresses.

Direct the air from your dryer downwards - the nozzle will help with this - to create a smooth, sleek finish.

Don’t move on to the next section of your hair until each is completely dry - your stylist would never let you leave the salon with even a slightly damp mane.

Be sure to keep moving your dryer, as leaving heat concentrated on one area for too long will frazzle your locks.

Set and add shine to your blow-dry by finishing off with a cool blast of air from your dryer. And, if you want your tresses to look even shinier, add a little more serum or oil to your finished style.

Hairspray will keep your blow-dry in place all day long, but use it sparingly for a modern look.

Sixty great reasons for Tea

Sue Ryder - Thorpe Hall Hospice

T housands of people in Peterborough

and its surrounding counties have

benefited from the lifetime’s work

of an inspirational woman.

And this year, the charity that she set

up will call on the local community to

help celebrate sixty years of care

around the world.

Sue Ryder set up her charity in 1953

after witnessing the atrocities of the

Second World War as a member of the

Special Operations Executive & locally,

Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe,

Peterborough was opened in 1991.

For its diamond celebrations, Sue Ryder

is encouraging people to organise a

fundraising event perhaps with a 1950s

theme or involving the number 60. The

charity is planning vintage tea parties

and hopes that supporters will organise

their own.

Sue Ryder fundraiser at Thorpe Hall

Jackie Page said: “We've put together

a party kit, complete with bunting and

invitations. There's also our tea party

guide and recipes, so if that sounds like

fun, you can start planning your party

now.

“Whether at work, home or in the

community, we are asking people to

help us celebrate our 60 years of

incredible care with friends and family

by having fun and raising money for a

great cause. Could you raise £600 in 60

days or sell 60 cupcakes in 60 minutes?

The possibilities are endless.”

Sue Ryder started her first home at the

age of 29 in her mother’s house in

Suffolk to help disabled people and

refugees, particularly from Poland.

Jackie Page said: “Sue Ryder, who later

became Baroness Ryder of Warsaw,

died in 2000 but her legacy is the

wonderful work that continues to help

people around the world.

“Locally, Thorpe Hall hospice has

delivered incredible specialist care and

emotional support to people with

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21 May emphasises your work, your daily

life and your career. You may need to

bring some areas into balance, a real

review of what’s not working will be

necessary. The new moon on the 10th

has much to

offer and you should feel more confident and

powerful than ever before.

CAPRICORN DEC. 22 - JAN. 20 Creativity, joy and love feature strongly

during May, but you’ll need to review

your work/life balance. Your values and

your purpose are being questioned. Do

you make enough time to fulfil your potential and

your passion? Venus moving to Gemini on the 10th

will bring some answers.

AQUARIUS JAN. 21 - FEB. 18 The domestic area of your chart is

illuminated during this month, moving,

renovating or rearranging are all

possibilities. Communication is also

emphasised and involvements with new networks

should fire up your interest. Stay open to all

possibilities and utilise your talents to the full.

PISCES FEB. 19 – MARCH 20 Jupiter, planet of abundance and joy is

gaining strength in the domestic area of

your chart and your need for change

and re-evaluation will be gathering

momentum. As Venus joins Jupiter on the 10th

you’ll begin to feel more attuned to who you are

and be more positive about where you are headed.

ARIES MARCH 21 - APRIL 20 There’s plenty of action in the financial

sector of your chart, heralding the need

for a complete review. The time is right

to put your fiery energy into new and

innovative money making schemes. Stern Saturn

in Scorpio enables resourcefulness and keeps you in

touch with reality.

INDIAN TAKEAWAY WITH HARDEEP SINGH KOHLI

An Evening of Comedy, Cooking & Curry

F ollowing the success of his other live

shows, Nearly Naked Chef and Chat

Masala, Hardeep Singh Kohli would

like to invite you to his brand new show,

Indian Takeaway.

The country is obsessed with curry. That

much we know. But how do Hardeep's

home-cooked curries - the recipes inspired

by his Mum and his Gran - compare to the

local Indian Takeaways we love and

adore?

Let's find out! At the beginning of each show Hardeep

will order a takeaway live on stage

for delivery to the theatre, having

selected a local Indian takeaway from

audience suggestions submitted via

HardeepLive.com. He will then order an

audience member’s favourite meal.

Whilst waiting for the order to arrive

Hardeep cooks his own food. Two curries

with side orders of delicious cooking tips

and lip-smacking Comedy. What’s not to

like?

Hardeep is a regular host on Channel 5’s

hugely popular current affairs show, The

Wright Stuff and has been a regular

reporter on BBC1’s The One Show and a

guest on BBC 1's Question Time, and This

Week with Andrew Neil. For Channel 4 he

has written and presented the BAFTA

Award winning In Search of the Tartan

Turban, the critically acclaimed and

award winning Hardeep Does... and the

seminal gambling series ‘50 Says You'll

Watch This’.

Having started his broadcasting career in

radio he still holds the wireless very dear,

presenting extensively across Radio 4 and

Radio 5 Live and has made a plethora of

documentaries for Radios 2, 3 and 4. www.hardeeplive.com.
