Water

• Peterborough Utilities Commission (PUC) is responsible for supplying all of Peterborough residents and businesses with safe, clean water. Peterborough is fortunate to have a plentiful supply of source water from the Otonabee River.

• The Otonabee River water is of good quality and can be described as a moderately coloured water of low turbidity. The river water temperature ranges from 0°C in winter to approximately 26°C in summer. Water is continuously being treated and tested to ensure that customers always have access to drinking water that meets or exceeds all drinking-water standards set by the Ministry of Environment. This water is treated in our state-of-the-art, government-inspected facility before being distributed throughout the City.

EnvironmentKawartha Waterways

• One of the greatest resources in Peterborough & the Kawarthas are the magnificent waterways. Choose from one of our 134 lakes for water activity ranging from kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating and swimming. The lakes of Peterborough & the Kawarthas are home to many species of fish including walleye, carp, crappy, bass and muskie.

• The area offers great hiking, biking and canoe trails that take you through both the lakeland regions and the more urban centres of the region. When the snow falls many of these trails are transformed into cross-county ski trails that provide a tranquil environment for viewing the local wildlife.

• Peterborough Green-Up (www.greenup.on.ca) provides education, services, resources and support to enable citizens to take up environmentally healthy lifestyle habits.  Our comprehensive approach includes such areas as: waste reduction, water quality, water conservation, energy conservation, landscape enhancement, air quality improvement, active and alternative transportation and climate change awareness.
