developed by Somnus to work in harmony with the

Starting with steel rods, we draw them into

fine wire of different diameters. This makes

our springs lighter and more durable so that we

can use up to 4,800 of them in each layer.

has its own unique blend of luxurious upholstery fillings.

stranded hand-teased horsetail, mohair, tree silk-cotton,

cashmere, flax and hemp, some of which we grow on our

our dedication to this ideal has led to countless

innovations in spring technology, and some of the

world’s most luxurious beds. Beds that have helped

C R A F T S M A N S H I P S I N C E 1 8 4 0 .

1936New opportunities arise for ship and hospital bedding for Nottingham factory, further advancing the Somnus brand.–1940Mattresses being produced by 600 people employed in six factories. Products are shipped worldwide.

1920Continued expansion demands the acquisition of more factory premises. Harry and Billy Rhodes are appointed to run the company, with Miss Rhodes as secretary.–1924The new Nottingham factory is opened with AJ Ludlam as director in charge of sales and advertising.

1900Spring technology is introduced into mattresses for the first time.–1905Trade growth forces a move to a new factory in Leeds, with orders to supply the troops in The Boer war.

1932A further factory is opened in Manchester, to keep up with ever increasing demand.–1933Showrooms open in London, with emphasis on the high standards and quality. Billy Rhodes is appointed as chairman.

1840William Rhodes establishes business as a flock dealer in Birstall, West Yorkshire.–1860William’s son, Joseph, joins his father making mattresses with flock.–1880Joseph’s sons, Harry and JW (Billy) enter the small, but growing business.

1910Billy Rhodes names a bed “Somnus” after the Roman god of sleep and dreams. The first mattresses bearing the Somnus name achieves record sales, matching the company’s increasing reputation for quality.

1954Somnus mattresses specified for Her Majesty’s new royal yacht ‘Britannia’.–1970The business is rationalised to adapt to market forces.

2015Developed 4K spring technology and introduced weaving looms.–2015Somnus celebrates its 175th birthday.

2000Somnus is bought by Harrison Spinks, one of the country’s most respected bedmakers.

2014Started drawing our own fine wire for use in the Sensa Intelligent pocket spring system.

2012In celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee a limited edition range of beds is created.

2007New handmade bed collections are launched featuring the unique Sensa Pocket Spring System.–2009The Somnus farm is purchased in order to raise sheep using their fleeces in our unique blends of 100% natural upholstery fillings.

2010A new collection is launched with the technologically advanced Sensa Pocket Plus. Yorkshire Dales Eco Wool produced on the Somnus farm reinforces the company’s policy of using the highest quality materials sourced locally.–2011Launch of the Somnus national advertising campaigns.

2013Launch of the luxury pillowtop range, featuring the very latest Sensa Intelligent pocket springs. –2013Two Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are won, one for Innovation and one for Sustainable Development.
