Essential OilsWhat’s the difference?

Not all essential oils are created equal. Some oils are used for aromatherapy while others have medicinal value.

What exactly does this mean? Webster’s dictionary defines “aro-matherapy” like this – “the use of natural oils that have a pleasant smell to make a person feel better especially by rubbing the oils into the skin.”

Aromatherapy is a pleasant smell. These oils are not intended to be ingested or used to attack viruses or bacteria in our physical bodies. There is emotional value in smells. Our sense of smell goes directly to the limbic system of the brain – the place where emotions are stored.  Given that our emotions often drive our behaviors, aro-matherapy often impacts the decisions we make. Consider the different emotional reactions to smelling the flowers from your wedding bouquet verses catching a whiff of dirty gym socks. Smelling your favorite dinner cooking creates a completely different emotion than the stench of rotting garbage. Smells create unique and often passionate reactions, which can potentially influence our behavior. These behaviors generate physical as well as emotional consequences or benefits. This is why some people believe that aromatherapy can change your life. Therapeutic-grade essential oils, on the other hand, interact with our phys-ical bodies more than just our expressive

side. Many studies find the properties of essential oils can penetrate the blood brain barriers and alter your body chemistry on a cellular level. Research has proven essential oils have properties such as anti-inflamma-tory, anti-viral, anti-tumoral, anti-bacterial, anti-spasmodic, and anti-coagulant, just to name a few. Physical healing also stimulates our emotions. When your body has a disease or ailment, most people have an emotional re-action to that. Once that disease or ailment leaves the body, emotional energies can shift to other things. Using therapeutic-grade essential oils for physical healing ultimately generates sound emotional health as that energy is no longer needed to address physi-cal maladies.Therapeutic-grade essential oils impact our physical bodies while aroma-therapy influences our emotional self. Both types of oils have their value and place in our lives. Which one is best for you depends on your goals and objectives. If the driving force is overcoming a bacterial infection, for example, therapeutic-grade essential oils provide more benefit than aromatherapy. Insomnia caused by everyday life stresses can be overcome by aromatherapy. On the other hand, insomnia caused by physical pain is best combated with essential oils. Not all essential oils are created equal. The local craft supply store sells “es-sential oils” to make soaps and candles. This is not “therapeutic grade” and should not be used for anything except scenting soaps and

candles. Future articles will provide more detailed information about labeling and wordings on products. Be sure to pick up the next edition of The Valley’s Nickel to learn more about what a label says  - and does not say. For more specific information re-lating to how Essential Oils could help you or your family, feel free to contact my office listed on the business card below or visit my website www.PermissionCST.com.

The Science of Water: What You Drink and Your Immune System

Most people know that their bodies are made up of a great deal of water, but may be surprised to learn that

number is about 70 percent—and yet studies show we don’t drink enough to replenish what we need. Other drinks to be sure, but water? Not even close. Emphasizing this point is a study conducted by Dr. Alyson Goodman for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention that suggests one in 10 Americans drinks no water every day. Zero. She calls these results “mindboggling.” “Water is vital for life,” says Goodman. “Many health risks decrease when you drink plain water.” Goodman believes that the non-water drinkers are getting their water from coffee, sodas, food and other sources, which might theoretically be okay, except for the calories that are associated with those other

liquids. According to Dr. Theodore A. Baroody, in order for a body to function well, it must have water, and in order for it to function properly, it must continuously work to maintain a proper pH or chemical balance. To this end, the benefits of drinking water can’t be measured (preventing dehydration chief among them), however, adding alkaline water to a diet already rich

in nutrient dense foods can help maintain a body’s pH balance, as well as aid in avoiding cancer, weak bones, premature aging and fatigue. “An unbalanced pH can force your body to borrow important minerals from your vital organs and bones in order to remove excess acid,” Baroody says. Water such as Alkame Water not only helps regulate these important

pH balances in the body, but can boost the immune system, improve cardio-respiratory function and enhance energy levels. It even fights oxidative stress and free radicals. Unlike its tap and bottled counterparts, Alkame Water goes through a process called “micro-clustering,” in which the molecules that make up water are broken up into smaller “clusters,” allowing body cells to absorb the water much faster, and in turn hydrate you more efficiently. “If someone were to ask me, ‘What is the one thing I can do to have better health?’ Then the answer would be simple: Start drinking alkaline, ionized water,” says Dr. Robert O. Young, PhD, author of the “The pH Miracle.” Alkame Water, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pinacle Enterprise Inc. (OTCBB: PINS) (OTCQB: PINS). An Autumn Garden for HalloweenBy: Nikki Phipps

There’s no better time to enjoy the spectacular beauty that nature has to offer than during the autumn season.

This is an ideal occasion for entertaining friends and family, especially around Halloween. Why not take advantage of all the vibrant colors and stimulating textures that autumn provides by creating a garden themed around this exciting holiday. Halloween parties provide a great opportunity to bring the bountiful harvest from the garden indoors; or better yet, invite guests out into the garden instead. Bathe the garden or patio with soft lights. Set autumn or Halloween-colored votive candles inside small jars or glasses and place them on terra cotta saucers adorned with colorful leaves. These charming, little lanterns can be used as attractive centerpieces for tables or scattered throughout the garden. Pumpkins are an absolute must for decorating a Halloween garden. Create a variety of Jack-O’-Lanterns and spread them throughout the surrounding landscape. Light them up with candles. You could also choose to hollow out varieties of pumpkin, gourd, and even squash to use as festive containers for cut-flower arrangements. Fill them with various mums, Chinese lanterns, stems having berries attached, sunflowers, dried peppers, twigs, etc. Wicker harvest baskets also make lovely containers. Gather a few bales of hay or straw, add some corn stalks and pumpkins, and accent with Indian corn and small decorative gourds. For additional interest, you could cover tables with old burlap sacks. Create cozy seating around these tables; or perhaps, self-contained, rock fire pits. Autumn-themed gardens are generally rich with colors such as crimson, gold, dark green, and burnt orange. These beautiful colors result from a variety of flowers, foliage, berries and seed heads. In keeping with a traditional Halloween theme, there are several ways to accomplish a spook-tacular garden. If you desire, your focus can be centered on orange and black. However, too much dark color can result in making the garden dull and unappealing. Your goal is to achieve an inviting atmosphere. Good choices for adding orange color might include zinnias, marigolds, tiger lilies, Gerber daisies, poppies, and butterfly weed. Near-black beauties could include a variety of tulips and irises. Don’t forget to throw in some orange and black-colored pansies as well. Keep in mind, however, that a Halloween theme does not need to be limited to just these colors. Flowers that are deep maroon can also help set off your

Halloween effect. Look for these shades in favorite varieties of cosmos, bachelor buttons, or snapdragons. Complimentary colors such as orange mums and purple asters can add additional interest. Mix in some gray or blue grasses. Likewise, try implementing some dark maroon roses in the garden; allow them to climb along an old iron trellis. Place stone benches in various areas for seating, allowing different views, and maybe a nearby water basin to wash away troubles. Additionally, you might want to include plants that have creepy names such as devil’s tongue, blood lily, spider orchid, bat plant, bleeding heart, bloodroot, etc. Did you know that at one time having certain plants within your garden made you guilty of being a witch? Many types of herbs, weeds, and flowers were once considered to be used solely by witches for making up magical potions and spells. Some of these included Hellebores, lavender, poppies, dandelions, and even ferns. Foxglove, known also as witches thimbles, and yarrow, referred to as devil’s nettle, are also commonly grown plants in many gardens today that have a ghoulish connection with witchcraft. Just for fun you might consider designing a witch’s garden filled with various herbs. These gardens are generally circular in shape as it was once believed a sacred symbol by witches. Plant rows of red beauties around the perimeter of the garden. Red blooms were said to keep out evil doers. Try geraniums, zinnias, nasturtiums, red spider lilies, or firecracker flowers. On the other hand, if you’re wishing to ward off a witch, try a border filled with vibrant yellows and rich greens. There are many varieties of flowers such as marigolds, sunflowers, green zinnias, etc. and foliage plants such as hostas, ornamental grasses, or evergreens that will achieve this effect easily. Within the witch’s garden you may find an array of native plants. Add further interest and drama by incorporating ornamental plants as well. Enhance your theme with various features such as gargoyles, toadstool ornaments, broomsticks, and small cauldrons. Allow these objects to crawl out from beneath or behind plants to create an air of mystery. An autumn garden can easily be designed to fit a Halloween theme. With only a dash of imagination and a few Halloween-related props, you can create an autumn garden that will amaze your family, friends, and neighbors. Happy Halloween.

Homemade Fruit Rollup RecipeFor Hungry Kids

America is the nation of snackers. We crunch, dip, dunk and miniaturize any tasty morsel we can get our hands

on. Now, it’s in the genes — we’ve created generations full of kids who are snack-loving, on-the-go eaters. A national survey of moms conduct-ed by California Raisins found that half of their children enjoy at least one to two snacks daily, with another 44 percent saying snacks are the norm for their kids three to four times each day. Participating moms said there are two deciding factors that determine what snacks make it into the shopping cart. First, is it healthy? Second, does it receive a thumbs up or down from the peanut gallery of picky eaters? California Raisins are a great choice for that sought-after intersection between healthy snacking and happy kids. The fat-free, no-sugar-added fruit adds a kid-approved burst of sweetness on its own or as a tasty complement to other healthy snacks. “As a busy full-time working mom of three young kids, I’m always looking for con-venient and healthy snacks for my children,” said Laura Fuentes, California Raisin Blogger

Ambassador and founder of MOMables, a company dedicated to helping parents create healthy school lunches. “California Raisins are a great choice for wholesome, on-the-go snacking, and I make them a key ingredient in many of my homemade baked goods.” Raisins have another perk, too: they’re affordable. According to the U.S. De-partment of Agriculture, raisins are the most economical dried fruit. Try out wholesome, fun-to-make recipes, like California Raisin Cinnamon Fruit Roll Ups, to help your family enjoy the healthy snacking wave the right way.

Check out loveyourraisins.com for this recipe and tons more.

CALIFORNIA RAISIN CINNAMON FRUIT ROLL UPS

Courtesy: California Raisin Blogger Ambassa-dor Laura Fuentes, SuperGlueMom

Serves: 14-18 roll ups

Ingredients:

2 cups golden or natural raisins 1 small pear, peeled and cut into pieces 2 cups water 3 teaspoons cinnamon

Instructions:

1.    Bring 2 cups of water to boil. 2.    Meantime, place raisins and diced pear inside a large bowl. 3.    Once water boils, pour inside the bowl. With a fork, mix ingredients around, and wait 20 minutes for raisins to plump up. 4.    Remove ¾ cup of liquid. Add cinnamon, and mix ingredients. 5.    Carefully pour cinnamon-plumped fruit and liquid inside a blender or food processor, and blend until it becomes a paste. 6.    Preheat oven to 200 degrees F. 7.    Pour half the mixture onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Spread it thinly on first sheet with the back of a spoon. Cover entire baking sheet. Less is more here. Pour remaining mixture onto a second sheet. 8.    Bake in mid to lower parts of your oven for 2.5-3 hours. This is one recipe in which it is OK to open up the oven to check for doneness. After 2.5 hours, check every 15-20 minutes. You are looking for the fruit to peel away easily from the parchment and has become dehydrat-ed. Oven temperatures and cooking times will vary, so keep an eye on these after 2.5 hours. 9.    When done, remove from oven and allow to cool. Cut into 1-inch strips across your pan. Roll them up and store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.

The Gardens are a subterra-nean complex of patios, grottos, and garden courts intercon-necting with passageways that encircle the living quarters of self-taught artist and builder who sought to escape the bru-tal head of Fresno Summers. Know Your Vodka

When most people think about vodka they think about hanging out with friends and just having a great

time. But what about the quality of the vodka? Is it like whiskey where the taste is evident of its origin and age? Is there more to it than a wild night of good times, half memories and cringing faces after consuming a mouthful of a shot? The answer is: absolutely.

Different Types of Vodka

Drinking vodka means that you have choices and options to the type that you are going to have. There are Russian vodkas, neutral vodka, flavored vodka and regional touch. This can get tricky considering the amount of brands that are out there. One look in to a liquor store and you’ll be met with a wall of different bottles to sample, which may be tempting to do right away, but here are some tips to help you. Look for the unknown brands. There will always be the big brand names in vodka, but you will find hidden gems if you explore some of the lesser known labels. Some of the smoothest vodkas are distilled by some of the smallest distillers who take great pride in their craft and these boutique vodkas can really change your view of this liquor as a whole. That said, it is a rough business and unfortunately many of these brands do not stay around for long. If you find a great boutique vodka you enjoy, support them and tell them (almost everyone can be found online and via social media)

Prices of Vodka

Cheap vodka will taste cheap. Vodka is one of the liquors where price usually reflects quality and the cheaper the vodka, the more harsh it will be. If you’re mixing drinks with a lot of fruit and other heavy flavors, most of the impurities of a cheap vodka will probably be masked. However, if you go up one price increment, you are likely to find the quality improves significantly. Top-shelf means higher quality. Next time you are at the liquor store, pay attention

to the placement of vodkas to determine their quality. It is standard practice that the cheaper vodkas are on the bottom shelves (often those $5 liters of gut-wrenching liquor) and the more expensive vodkas (top-shelf ) are higher up. If you’re looking for a good, mid-range vodka that is great in a variety of cocktails and may be good straight and chilled, scan the shelves at eye level, it may make all the difference between loving it or hating it.

In Conclusion

Vodka is subjective. As with all liquor, everyone

is not going to like the same brands and this is very true for vodka. You can read all of the reviews available, ask everyone you know, and you will end up with too many different opinions to distinguish which is the best. Use these opinions as a guide, but we encourage everyone to experiment on their own because everyone’s tastes are different and what someone else may find pleasing, you may not, and, after all, you’re the one drinking it, right?
