Revival Records Turns Back TimeAnd Asks You To Spin

A Few Records With Them Today!By Charlie Schaaf

Man! this is it! "DEJA VU" FOR RECORD JUNKIES! My Saturday after-noons in the sixties were spent biking to my local record store. It was small, plastered with album jackets all over the walls and smelled a bit like my mom's vinyl tablecloth. Albums, hundreds of them, were neatly lined up alphabetically, while those cute little 45s were stacked like fl ap-jacks. the Beatles or maybe the Beach Boys or even the Rolling Stones music slapped you in the ears when you walked through the door.

HEAVEN. PURE UNADULTERATED HEAVEN.Frankly, I thought this kind of pleasure was long gone. bUt NO.

REVIVAL RECORDS has taken Petula Clark's smart advice and gone... DOWNTOWN! located at 418 South barstow Street this is a haven for record buffs. Over 10,000 albums from the famous to the obscure and all on black shiny vinyl. the album covers are on the wall and the artists that made you feel all groovy or romantic or winsome safely waiting their turn to be lovingly plopped on the turntable. then it's time to spin a disk and boogie!

revival records truly has "vinyl" in their soul and songs in their heart. It will do you good to fi le through their huge stock. You will be amazed at what you fi nd. thanks Revival Records... and

OK. I must admit I've always had a hankering to see those beautifully painted and chromed Big Rig Trucks up close. But I must have been painting a closet or something... in 2010 when the first BIG RIG TRUCK SHOW rolled into town! But I'm not missing this year's show!

No sirree bob!Big Rig Trucks (up to 200) will again be on hand to simply amaze the “TRucK lOveR” in all of us. The fun and excitement of many of these one-of-a-kind trucks cannot be missed. There will be everything from awesomely painted semis to gleaming milk haulers. Plus... an-tique fire engines, local law enforcement vehicles, a Big Rig Classic Car Show and even military vehicles.

Imagine up to 200 Big Rigs in one spot. But the three day event is much more than just wonderful

trucking “eye candy.”

It is a salute to the entire trucking industry. An industry of hard

working men and women who carry the goods of the world to every corner of our nation. The Big Rigs are theirs and the com-mitment an outstanding one! Plus, local charities

benefit from this great event and the show is fRee

to the public.

PleaSe. Put this three day Big Rig Truck Show on your calender

and bring the entire family. The Big Rig Trucks are a rollin'!

Maybe you don't think of summertime when you think of a bulk foods store, but I sure do! Weaver's is a great place to do your summer shopping. even though it is a "bulk" food store, all of their products are available in "normal" sizes and don't have to be pur-chased in huge quantities!

Whether you take a plane, a bus or a car; whether you take the whole family, your spouse or just your-self - you’ll want to pack some quick and healthy snacks.

Try dRIed aPPle RInGS - they are chewy apple slices that have no added sugar and travel beau-tifully. dRIed BlUeBeRRIeS are a unique choice that kids will love - they are fun to eat plus they are full of vitamins and fiber! Nuts are a wonderful travel food; you can keep them in plastic storage bags or small containers. Weaver’s has a WIde VaRIeTy Of nUTS, whether you like them salt-ed, smoked, cinnamon-sugar-coated or raw, they have

P a r a D ea Parade not To Be Missed!

By Charlie schaaf

And we mean it. This spectacular parade has been around since 1976 and it just keeps getting better! carol Peuse and her husband Bob took over the organizing in

1984 and helped it grow... between 100 - 125 units expected again this year. Now these are "some" units! There will be fl oats, antique cars, patri-otic color guards, lots of horses... and this year the exciting Rochester Shrine Osmon cycle Patrol

will motor along the street.

Now this parade is something special and would not happen without such fi ne Augusta area support. carol and Bob may be the spark, but it is everyone pulling to-gether that make it the parade that stands out. Oh, and you will defi nitely hear each unit’s very special story, because there are four announcing stands... telling it like it is! And what "it" is... is a parade in celebration of Augusta's community spirit and pride. This parade draws thousands and begins sharply at 1:30pm. You need to be there! And if you happen to bump into carol, say... "THanKS!"

By the time the civil War broke out in 1861, the estab-lishment of a community on the Dells Mill site was well under way. The mill is still there today.

The Dells Mill operated as a flour and feed mill for over 100 years. The water from Bridge creek was the only source of power ever used.

In 1894, the mill was purchased by the clark family and has re-mained in their possession to this day, having passed through four generations. In 1968 Dells Mill was converted into a muse-um. The mill building itself is a five story structure built of hand hewn timbers held together by wooden pegs.

It contains 3,000 feet of belt-ing and 175 pulleys all powered by water. In the 1830s early pioneers found Wisconsin’s rich soil ideal for growing wheat. In addition, the state was blessed with hundreds of rivers and streams offering an abundant supply of water power.

It was very important to each farmer that there be a mill somewhere near his farm to grind his wheat into us-able flour. The growth of wheat production in Wisconsin was tremendous between 1850 and 1880, and this was reflected in the rise of the milling business. In 1840, the area which is now Wisconsin supported a total of 33 flour and grist mills. By 1880, the number was just under 1,000. By 1900, milling was the second largest industry in the state, second only to lumber. Shortly af-ter the turn of the century however, the milling industry started its long decline and by 1920, abandoned flour mills could be found throughout the state.

The Dells Mill site, three miles from Augusta, is living history. gustaf clark is the owner and historian. He lives and breathes the mill. As a fourth generation miller he is part of this history.

The mill is open every day between May 1st and October 31st from 10am to 5pm. Take Highway 12 east toward Augusta, turn north on County Road V. 715-286-2714

CAIN'S ORCHARD'S "Blueberries"One Sweet Success Story!

By Charlie Schaaf

Aside from christmas caroling, there is probably noth-ing as family oriented (at least in summer) as packing

up the whole brood and going "berry picking!" Hidden Treasures has

taken you to strawberry fields forever with char-lotte, walked with you through area apple or-chards and even sung praises of the wild rasp-berries... but now its time to get focused on

the shy little BlueBeRRY.

Now blueberries are wonderful things! Sweetly eaten by them-

selves or snuggled in a bowl with milk and maybe a dollop of cream or sugar

on top. They end up in muffins, ice cream concoctions, even fruit compotes, and enliven many a breakfast table or picnic basket. Yummmy! But if you are inclining to-ward a very special family berry picking event, Hidden Treasures suggests you high-tail it to cAIN'S ORcHARD in Hixton. Since 1976 Kevin and Diane cain have been making their orchard into one very "special part" of our world!

cAIN'S ORcHARD features over 20,000 high bush blue-berries, available to be picked Saturdays only... and ONlY by you! Talk about a great family bonding event! Kevin and Diane suggest you bring a five quart ice cream bucket and the rest is up to you. There is a retail/gift shop to visit after you have filled your bucket and other "orchard delights" to be savored. But today, the blueberries take the prize!

Plan Your Own Visit Today... Spend Five Minutes Or A Day!

The INDIANHEAD SWAP MEET and CAR SHOW... 37 Years of Motoring Excitement!

By Charlie Schaaf

The historic Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds in chippewa Falls is host to one of the most dynamic, fun and just down-right exciting CaR SHOWS and SWaP MeeTS in the nation! This year's event is the 37th and is being held on Sunday, august 7th, 2011. And it is shaping up to be one the very best in a long line of win-ners! More than 700 cars, cycles, trucks, vintage autos, hot rods and custom "everythings" are expected and will be on display to bedazzle the car lover in most of us. It is truly a family event.

But enjoying the hundreds of cars and trucks is not the only attraction of the Indianhead car Show. It is also a fascinating SWaP MeeT where you can buy or sell or "swap" everything from a vintage Hudson Hornet hub-cap to a gremlin steering wheel. If it appeared on some car or motorcycle somewhere then there is more than a good chance you will fi nd it here!

The Indianhead Car Show is really the "SHOW Of SHOWS" in the chippewa valley... so, dust off those fuzzy dice, kick a tire or two and join the car lover in all of us on Sunday, August 7th. You will be glad you did. (See page 13)

Confessions Of A CAR SHOW Junkie

By Charlie Schaaf

And I is one! Old cars beautifully restored and maintained, and the area shows that feature them, are always high on my list of favorites. Now, let’s get it straight, I regularly visit the great old car events listed in Hidden Treasures... but then so do many of you. But that is not being a "junkie."

To me, being a junkie is when you just can't get enough of these great old cars! When you are caught pawing through boxes at auto-swap meets looking for that elusive hood ornament, or... maybe overheard by an insurance man while you ''blubber'' to yourself about how sad it is that they quit making Packards. Stuff like that raises you to the level of junkie. If you find yourself actually drooling on someone's pride-and-joy then treatment might just be in order. Nah!

The only real way an Old car Junkie (and millions of other auto-junkies as well) can deal with the infatuation is to ''feed it" by visiting darn near every show or gather-ing you can. So there. You have been told! Now pack up the young 'ens and off you go. Just remember that all these wonder-ful old cars, trucks, cycles, tractors and even bikes you may see and enjoy are true products of their time as well as being testaments to those fine folk who restore them! They are the true Old car Junkies. We salute and thank them.

CATCH A PUMPkINSEED!By Renee Wurzer

WHAT A fUN NAME! The Pumpkinseed is a panfish that can be caught all over Wisconsin! Pumpkinseeds like shallow water, making them the perfect choice for kids of all ages. catch Pump-kinseeds this summer using garden worms or leeches. You can fish from the shore, a pier, or wade right in. In Wisconsin, resident children under the age of 16 can fish any day of the year, but an adult who is helping will need a valid fishing license to cast or reel in a catch.

BASS fISHINgBass like warm weedy waters. The last 2-3 weeks in July can be a great time to try Bass fishing, especially in the Mississippi backwaters. Try shallow-running crank baits and plastic worms. early morning and evening hours are usually best. By early August, tenacity and creativity may be necessary but Smallmouth Bass can be found on the chippewa and Flambeau rivers. You might experi-ment with spinners and leeches floated on slip bobbers, especially at the weedline. later in August, try fishing for largemouth Bass in the cranberry flowages.

The Wisconsin DNR has fishing equipment for loan in-cluding fishing rods and reels, casting plugs, bobbers, hooks, lines and sinkers. Bring your own fresh bait and specialty lures. equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis. Reservations accepted. contact:

COlfax, indeed, is one of the friendliest small towns in the chippewa valley. It is also home to the COlfax MUnICIPal BUIldInG, built in 1916 and made of sandstone from the local quarry. It housed a banquet hall, kitchen, pantry, fire house, police court, council chamber, library, jail and a 560 seat auditorium and ticket booth. Truly an experiment in a multi-use building, which became the center of civic and social life. Today it houses the library and village offices. The Municipal Building is not the only local sandstone building. About 15 others re-main. enjoy an afternoon on a self-guided walking tour of these magnificent buildings and make sure you have enough time to do a little shopping and grab a bite to eat. It is a beautiful park right along the chippewa River and the perfect set-ting for the exciting rendezvous happenings that include a pre-1840s fur camp, spinning, weaving, black powder weaponry, atalatal throws, primitive archery, candy can-non, Indian fry bread... and even a prohibition era moon-shine still! learn how the still was used in the past and how it can make fuel today! Now what could be better than two days of living history?

There will be a civil War camp and artillery, large flea market, craft fair, bountiful farmer's market and much, much more! Be sure to discover the large display of cast animal tracks and learn how to identify them along with plants and trees. It would become a major tourist gate-way to the west and particularly the popular yellOW-STOne PaRK that the route would be named for!

June's Dairy MonTh.a "MooooVinG" Celebration

if There ever was one!By Charlie schaaf

JuNe. What a wonderful word! It conjures up visions of blue skies, fluttering butterflies, a million shades of green, innocent laughter from the kids and the promise of summer picnics to come. June. But pause a moment and give a thought to what will go into the picnic basket that you will lovingly pack.

I'm betting there will be sandwiches with cheese and something else, string cheese or even curds, yogurt for the little ones and perhaps even an ice cream treat! Mmmmm. Our lives are touched and enriched daily by the dairy indus-try... and June is their special month.

In 1937 the dairy industry picked June as a month to call attention to the wonders of milk and other dairy products. WHy JUne? Well, June is the month that cows generally start out in pasture. Plus, cele-brating the wonders of dairy was (and is) a good way to boost sales. Dairy celebrations started, dairy queens and princesses flourished and many country breakfasts served. even the cows smiled!

Wisconsin is rightly known for its dairy industry. Many won-derful cheeses and dairy products have arisen in this lovely state. Sure, Hidden Treasures is a bit prejudiced but think about it.... COlBy CHeeSe, STRInG CHeeSe, COJaCK, the ICe CReaM SUndae, MalTed MIlKS and much, much, more.

The Dunn county Historical Society will present the cre-ativity and cultural heritage of county residents, past and present through “Handmade History: Quilting in dunn County.” The exhibit will open July 1st and run through September 30th, 2011 at the Russell J. Rass-bach Heritage Museum.

With the help of area quilt guilds and clubs, the Society will display quilts represent-ing a variety of current tech-niques and styles as well as some historical quilts from the museum collection. In addition to traditional quilts, wall hangings, min-iature and specialty quilts, and wearable garments us-ing quilting techniques will be included. Special events will be hosted throughout the run of the exhibit.

“For generations, Dunn county quilt makers have blurred the lines between artist and artisan”

remarked Dunn county Historical Society executive di-rector, chuck Backus. “Museum Manager, carol Thibado has done an outstanding job curating this unique ex-hibit and creating for our visitors, a remarkable glimpse into the timeless artistry of Dunn county’s quilters.”

The Dunn County Historical Society’s Russell J. Rassbach Heritage Museum is located at 1820 Wakanda Street in Menomonie’s Wakanda Park. (From I-94 take exit 41 south on State Highway 25; turn left on Pine Avenue to Wakanda Park.) Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday 10am to 5pm. Admission is charged. "singin' The Blues!"an american Tradition alive and Well

in The Chippewa Valley!By Charlie schaaf

You've heard the phrase "I’Ve GOT THe BlUeS," or "I'M Really BlUe" or something similar. The phrases usually herald some story or feeling of sor-row, pain or just plain-old bad luck. But what does it have to do with music? Well, quite a bit really. But first we need to roll back the calendar to the mid 1850s or so.

Southern plantations were full of slaves, many of whom were sons of slaves or descendants of slaves. Slavery touched everyone in those days in the deep South. There was sadness but also moments of joy and laughter as man's soul rose to the occasion and searched how to express it! And as frequently happens, the way was through music.

Sharecroppers sang as they worked. Slaves sang as they picked cotton. Mothers sang spirituals to their chil-dren. All this wonderful song and sentiment mixed with native songs and chants to form an emotion filled music genre called "The Blues."

The heart and soul of this music was in the Mississippi Delta not too far from New Orleans. New Orleans was working its own musical magic with Jazz, and it was only natural that the ebb and flow of both music types would splash across the southern mu-sic tradition!

Along the way, the Blues reached out and different styles evolved. There was the chicago Blues, St. louis Blues, Memphis and Texas Blues. But all wonderful and emotional. These sounds tapped you on the shoulder and then slapped you with the pure joy!

Tiffany Wildlife areaTen thousand years ago, rushing waters from the melt-ing Wisconsin glaciers created the fertile chippewa River valley and the delta that now makes up the State of Wis-consin's Tiffany Wildlife Area. Its 13,000 acres include one of the largest stands of bottomland hardwood forests in the state and offers excellent whitetail deer and water-fowl hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, semi-wilderness canoeing, hiking (no marked trails), cross-country skiing and camping (by permit only).

The Tiffany Wildlife area is located in Buffalo and Pepin counties, along the chippewa River, between Nelson and Durand. It’s west of Highway 25 and mostly north of Highway 35. For more information, visit www.dnr.wi.gov.

Fountain city is a charming and busy historic town a bit further down the road from Alma. It is the home to many lovely sites but the real "sight to behold" will re-ally rock you! It's called the ROCK In THe HOUSe! And it surely is! On April 24 of 1995 a huge (55 ton) boulder rolled down from the cliffs above and plowed into a two bedroom home. It came to rest, pun intended, in what used to be a cozy master bedroom and here it still is today! luckily no one was hurt!

The ROcK IN THe HOuSe is quite the attraction and brings rock-hounds from throughout the world. It just is not every day that you can see and touch a 55 ton rock in a bedroom. It does make you think... and is well worth the trip.

“BARNEY'S BARNYARD”A True Labor Of Love!

By Charlie Schaaf

Who hasn't seen the smiles of pure joy on the faces of boys and girls who are for-tunate enough to be able to play, hold, pet or just sim-ply enjoy BaBy anIMalS! The smiles come from deep within and radiate out-ward. The world seems just

a little better or at least sweeter! But in this fast paced electronic-everything culture many children had no chance to enjoy the magic of baby animals. until “BaR-ney'S BaRnyaRd” came along.

Now Barney's Barnyard is one special place. It is a very kid friendly PeTTInG ZOO tucked on a bluff just a bit beyond cochrane, Wisconsin. The Barnyard is a no stress way to meet the likes of Barney, a loveable little donkey, cute fainting goats, lambs, pot-bellied pigs, chick-ens, rabbits and many more. All just waiting to be fed... and petted... and loved. Waiting for you and the kids!

llamas, exotic peacocks, kittens and guinea pigs add to this wonderful mix. BaRney'S BaRnyaRd is the place to begin and nurture a love of these fascinating animals. Take a trip to Barney's and say Hidden Treasures sent you!We Are eAsY To FinD. Hwy 35 runs past Cochrane. Cty 0 crosses Hwy 35 (right by the golf course). Turn out into the country on Cty 0 and go 2 1/2 miles to the top of the bluff. Immediately on top of the bluff, Belvidere Ridge Rd comes off from your left, turn left we’re right there on the corner, about 100 feet and our driveway is on the left side of the road.

Yours to Discover!

U N b e l i e V a b l e !by lori schmidt

That describes my venture over to Fountain city where I discovered elmer's auto and Toy Museum on top of eagle Bluff... the highest point on the Mississippi River. elmer and Bernadette have five buildings and a house chock full of well, you name it... everything from clas-sic cars to toy pedal cars to a carnival carousel. What started out as a private collection has been generously offered to the public for the past twenty years!

Start your journey in the house where you'll find a col-lection of antique dolls dating back to the 1800s. In the living room is a full size 1929 Model A Phaeton in pris-tine condition, yep right in the living room!

venture along to one of three buildings filled with over 100 full size, beautiful antique, classic and muscle cars from Models As and Studebakers to corvettes, Mustangs and even a Rolls Royce. The walls are lined with the world's largest display of pedal cars... over 700 of them! Nestled in between you'll find motorcycles and scooters and bicycles and high wheeled bikes and riding toys! AMAzINg!

Discover the treasures in the barn... it's filled with an-tique toys ranging from pedal airplanes and tractors to sleds, trucks and vintage go carts. There's even an old tool collection. Your next stop, elmer's favorite build-ing filled with toys, toys and more toys... thousands of them. From cast iron, pressed steel and Japanese tin to wind-up and battery operated. Their last count was at well over 35,000 collectible toys!

grab your family and friends, pack a lunch and plan to spend the day at elmer's on the bluffs overlooking the

mississippi river. a day trip well worth your time!

elmer's is about an hour and fifteen minutes from eau claire. if you're heading out of Alma, it's only about a 20 minutes

south on the Great river road. see you there!

78 | Pepin • Discover the Great River Road | Chippewa Valley's Hidden Treasures | Summer Fun 2011

Heading north on Highway 35, your destination is a wonderfully scenic river town called Pepin. Named after two early French trappers (the Pepin brothers) this town has it all! A wonderful and busy waterfront, a great marina, fine dining, quaint gift and art shops, and bed and breakfasts to make your stay memorable. Pepin is the birthplace of noted author laura Ingalls Wilder. She was born in a small cabin about seven miles from Pepin and her influence is felt everywhere in town. There is a laura Ingalls Wilder Museum, a recreated cabin of her birth site on county cc and a unique festi-val (called, you guessed it: laura Ingalls Wilder days) in September. There is a Pepin railway depot museum, smack dab in the middle of the laura In-galls Wilder park. Add to all this glittering sand beaches and world-class fishing and boating and you will see that Pepin is a real "jewel in the crown" of the Mississippi River valley.
