Top Earnings for FRH-HorsesWarum nicht FRH is Germany’s most successful dressage horse. This Weltmeyer/Wenzel son won more than 100,000 Euros last year with rider Isabell Werth. The German Equestrian Federation (FN) compiled in detail which horses had earned the most in the dressage ring, the jumper ring and in eventing in Germany in the Yearbook Sport. The best Hanoverians in these three Olympic disciplines carry the suffix FRH: It is Gotha FRH in jumping and FRH Butts Abraxxas in eventing. By Britta Züngel

Warum nicht FRH is the german dressage hor-se with the highest annual income for the

second consecutive time. The expressive chestnut and his champion rider Isabell Werth brought 118,008 Euros from all over the world to their home barn in Rheinberg. The pair competed at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky/USA where they won the bronze medal with the German team and at numerous renowned european competi-tions all the way to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil bet-ween September 2010 and September 2011. The pair earned respectable Euro 28,000.00 for the victories in the Grand Prix and the Freestyle on the Copa Cabana. The FN has allocated points for the standings according to which the breeders’ premi-ums are determined for a few years now. Warum nicht FRH holds the third position in this tabulation making Hinrich Luessen, who died a few years ago, the second most successful dressage horse bree-der. Donperignon who collected the second high-est amount of points in the german statistic was bred in Finland and is therefore not eligible to re-

ceive a breeder’s premium. Warum nicht FRH has been Isabell Werth’s prime horse for some time now. His stable mate Satchmo by Sao Paulo/Legat received great applause at his official retirement. After all he celebrated seven victories on six horse shows - his last one in October in Hannover not even 200 km away from Verden where the career of the sensitive bay started 15 years ago on nearly the exact day at the stallion sales. “He was a geni-us, very self-confident and dominant – a horse with character!” as Isabell Werth describes her “Satchie”. She retired him in Stuttgart in Decem-ber in front of a great audience after having ear-ned 566,309 Euros.

Isabell Werth would not be Isabell Werth if she did not have another top Hanoverian ready to go! She entered the road to success with Don Johnson by Don Frederico/Warkant when the pair was awar-ded the Otto-Lörke-Prize for the best rising Grand Prix horse. Matthias Klatt in the Harzvorland taught the powerfully moving bay the ABCs of

dressage. The trainer successfully competed him in riding and dressage horse classes before Isabell Werth discovered the horse. “He was very lively,” Matthias Klatt remembers with a smirk. Don John-son won his first Prix St. Georges in 2009; a year later he won his first short Grand Prix and then his first Special in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2011. He is the rising star of the year with an annual income of Euro 24,303.00 according to the dressage stan-dings holding sixth place within the Hanoverians.

Everybody talks about Dablino and Anabel Balken-hol, too. Kentucky was the championship debut for this pair. They finished with a team bronze medal. Holga Finken competed this son of De Niro/Wan-derbusch II at the World Championships for young dressage horses in 2006 and finished in fifth place. He received the final touches for international competitions at the Family Balkenhol. Even though he won less in prize money (only Euro 18,960.00), he received more points in the standings than Satchmo. Privately owned sire De Niro who was

the Hanoverian Stallion Of The Year 2008 had a sensational year 2011. The producer qualities of the winner of the German Dressage Derby are cer-tainly no secret. The Yearbook Sport shows five successful sons and daughters in the top 20 – which are an incredible 25 percent! Desperados, who was a recipient of the Otto-Lörke-Prize together with Don Johnson in Frankfurt and rider Kristina Sprehe are members of the german champion cadre in the Olympic year just like prime son Dablino. D’Agostino with Fabienne Lütkemeier is still in the B-cadre but on the verge of moving up into a German Nation Prize-equip. Dixieland with Andrea Timpe and De Value with Hartwig Burfeind belong to Hanover’s best horses nationally.

First choice for LondonGotha FRH and Shutterfly are Hanover’s prime re-presentatives in stadium jumping. Just like last year Gotha FRH by Goldfever/Prestige Pilot with rider Ludger Beerbaum earned the most money with Euro 232,941.00 increasing his life-earnings

to Euro 527,461.00. The pair received 4,750 Euros for winning the European Team Championship-tit-le in Madrid, while the prize-money for a second place in the Final of the Global Champions Tour that took place in Valencia in May of 2011 paid 60,000 Euros. The ten-year old chestnut mare holds the sixth position in the standings for Germany’s best. No question Gotha FRH is Ludger Beerbaum’s first choice for the Olympic Games in London!

2011 was a year of saying good-bye to great sport horses. Riding horse enthusiasts from all around the globe will miss Shutterfly by Silvio/Forrest xx in addition to Satchmo and Bonaparte. Next to nu-merous titles and trophies he also won more than 3,5 million Euros with Meredith Michaels-Beer-baum. “Petey” is on the same level with Deister, Dollargirl, Ratina Z and unforgettable E.T. FRH. His rider decided on a farewell no screenwriter could have written any better: MMB mounted Shutterfly one more time to say “Thank you Shutterfly!” after the victory in the Grand Prix of Europe in Aachen’s Soers. Gotha FRH and Shutterfly lead the rankings by a large margin. Even though Shutterfly’s stable mate Checkmate by Contendro/Pik Bube II has not earned quite as much, with an annual earning of 91,155 Euros he is approaching life-earnings of 2-Million. Once he won the team gold medal at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington/USA he had an advantage over Shutterfly though.

April 2011. The mare’s talent was discovered early. She received the State’s Premium Award as a three-year old and finished her mare performance test with a score of 9,0 in jumping. She started her sport horse career after having had a foal.

Four times FRHBy tradition the engagement of the Hanoverian Supporter‘s club FRH is strong with respect to event horses. FRH Fantasia by Federweißer/Quasi Roi clearly took centre stage in 2011. She became European Team champion in Luhmühlen with rider Andreas Dibowski who has been a longtime part-ner of the FRH. Earlier FRH Fantasia had won the CCI**** in Pau. Horse and rider received 33,000 Euros for this grandiose victory in a discipline that survives because of enthusiasm rather than prize-money! Dibo parted with his championship horse Butts Leon by Heraldik xx/Star Regent xx who is now in the United States with rider Nina Ligon from Thailand in preparation for the Olympic Games in London. Just before that the 14-year old had won the four-star competition in Luhmühlen and earned Euro 40,224.00. FRH Butts Avedon by Heraldik xx/Kronenkranich xx is the second grand championship hopeful on the “Irenenhof” in Döh-le. He is Bundeschampion and reserve world cham-pion and won his first CCI*** in Boekelo. The ear-nings of 12,500 Euros for this victory will reflect in

next year’s statistics. Nevertheless earnings of Euro 10,850.00 are pretty remarkable for an eight-year old event horse. “The victory in Boekelo clearly re-flects the performance potential of this black gel-ding and allows for all possibilities in 2012.”

Another world-class horse heads on the tabulation of points however: FRH Butts Abraxxas by Heraldik xx/Kronenkranich xx. His rider Ingrid Klimke was inconsolable after the European Championships in Luhmühlen where she was clearly in the lead befo-re entering stadium jumping. All chances of win-ning individual gold fell literally to the ground. The team title remained; annual earnings of 10,850 Euros and most points in the rankings placed “Braxxi” ahead of FRH Fantasia in the tabulation. FRH Schorsch by Sherlock Holmes/Weltmeyer with rider Julia Mestern completes the FRH-quartet. The approved stallion was a member of the champion-ship cadre and participated as an individual in the European Championships. With only six starts it has become quiet around this pair as Julia Mestern is now employed with the State Stud Schwaigan-ger. n

The Hanoverian 03|2012 9

The annual membership meeting of the Ame-rican Hanoverian Society took place in Palm Beach, Florida. Over the years this event has developed into a social event where bree-ders, riders and supporters of the Hanoverian horse meet. Over the course of several days an attractive program is offered including discussion rounds, presentations, an intense exchange between board and members, an awards ceremony honoring successful bree-ders and a so-called silent auction where do-nated items are auctioned off to benefit the society. The items brought more than US $ 7,200. An original halter of the stallion Wol-kentanz sold for $ 625.00. There are also a great number of panel meetings on the agen-da where the passed year is analyzed in de-tail and the course for the future is determi-ned.

The critical times hurt the American Hanove-rian Society. The number of foal registrations is down which reduces the income of the so-ciety. Measures were taken. The belt has been tightened In many areas. Measures were also decided upon to secure the future. “I want to see growth in the coming years,” So President Edgar Schuette. The so-called inspections with mare registrations, mare

tests and foal registrations will have to be-come even more breeder-friendly. A futurity for yearlings and two-year olds will be intro-duced on the inspections which will offer pri-ze money. Every buyer of a Hanoverian will receive a welcome gift and a membership for at least one year free of charge. The use of Thoroughbred blood in the US was much dis-cussed. A study group was formed (Suzanne Quarles, George Walker, Gerd Zuther) with the assignment to find suitable Thorough-bred stallions in the US.

A new committee “Marketing and Educa-tion” presented the results of a member questionnaire which showed that 60 percent of the questioned endured negative effects during the past critical years. It also reflected though that 54 percent now have an optimi-stic outlook towards the future in respect to the breeding of horses and horse competi-tions. The questionnaire also reflected great support for the Hanoverian horse and for the American Hanoverian Society. Possibilities of a closer cooperation between the German Hanoverian Association and the American Hanoverian Society in respect to advertising were also discussed with the Marketing Committee. LC

Taking the course of growth

The board of the AHS (left to right): Rick Toering, Barbara Schmidt, Edgar Schütte (President), Suzan-ne Quarles, Hugh Bellis-Jones (Executive Director) and Vanessa Carlson.

Pleasure/Caletto II (breeder: Dr. Bonny-Jas-min Jacobs, Bierbergen) and rider Christian Ahlmann placed forth.

C and G Flash Flash by Forrester/Grannus (breeder: Annette Siemer and Bernd Meyer-Siemer, Oyten-Bas-sen) and Pablo Barrios finished in forth place in the World Cup-Jumping of Wellington.

Graf Lando (VA) Lars Nieberg bought Graf Lando by Graf Grannus/Landadel (breeder: Friedrich Kramer, Wennigsen) on the Elite Auction in 2002 in Verden. Graf Lando sold to the United States after the first international successes. Now the dark bay is stabled in the barn of Ramiro Quintana from Argentina. The pair placed in the top group in Wellington in January. They finished in forth place in a 1,45 meter-jumper class.

HH Let‘s Fly Let’s Fly by Lordanos/Forrest xx (breeder: Uwe Dreesmann, Hesel) and Rodrigo Pessoa successfully competed in Florida at the be-ginning of February. They placed third in round IV of the Winter Equestrian Festival Challenge.

Satisfaction FRH Satisfaction FRH by Stakkato/Calypso II (breeder: Rainer Schulz, Burgdorf) and Marco Kutscher won the two-phase jumper class at the renowned indoor show in Zurich. The pair had already completed a time and fault class in second place. One week later Satisfaction FRH placed third in a speed class in Bor-deaux; he finished in forth place in another speed class.

Shaitaan Shaitaan by Stolzenberg/For Future (breeder: Lutz Wimmer, Helmstedt) and rider Frederik Knorren finished the first qualification of the youngster-tour in fifth place at the “Baden-classics” in Offenburg. The eight-year old im-proved placing forth in a second class over 1,40 meter.

Wanessa The bay mare Wanessa is from the last vinta-ge of Celle’s state stud sire Wendulan (bree-der: Bernd Moormann-Schmitz, Kluse-Stein-bild) and out of a mare by Dobrock. The eight-year old finished the international Youngster-Tour in forth place with her rider Lena Sennekamp in Offenburg. n

Breeding

Start to Finish-VictoryThe first horse to enter the arena at the free-jumping competition for four-year olds that belongs to the Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding in February received the best scores of the day. Skylook is the name of the vintage champion.By Ulrich Hahne

Hanoverian jumpers come from Dannenberg. This old wisdom is still valid today. However

we must adjust it a little bit in 2012: Hanoverian jumpers do not only come from Dannenberg. Horst Seide from Damnatz presented the champion of this year’s group of four-year olds out of the Pro-gram for Hanoverian Jumper Breeding. Skylook by Stolzenberg/Athletico. He received a free breeding to former Bundschampion FRH Quaid which was offered to him by Voitech Csabi from the prime Czech Breeding Stud Staj Mustang. “I already have a good Quaid-foal out of a Stakkato-mare,” Seide was delighted.

The free jumping competition started with Skylook as the first horse in the ring. The judges were Harm

Sievers and Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener. The athletic black with his rectangular frame set the standard for this event and kept his lead until the end. With Wienerwald-, Grey Silk xx-, Senat- and Forstner-blood in his pedigree and bred in Dannenberg-fa-shion this youngster convinced in every phase with lots of ability and showed no weakness throug-hout his entire presentation. “He is a horse as you would imagine one for competition: long-legged, correct and complete with very good dynamics,” was the verdict of Harm Sievers. Skylook was at the training and marketing centre in Verden for preparation for 14 days. “He loves and enjoys jum-ping,” breeder Horst Seide explains. “And he learns very quickly. He remains calm, never looses per-spective and is easy to ride.”

Breeding

Cricket PJ by Contendro/Calypso II ranks right be-hind Skylook in the first group in respect to the assessment for jumping. This still maturing youngs-ter is a product of the successful breeding program of Dr. Jacobs GbR from Bierbergen. Cricket PJ jum-ped trustingly without becoming excited in a very clean and crisp technique and with elasticity. How-ever he did not pass Skylook in his overall impres-sion. We cannot rule out that the problems wit-nessed today will be compensated for once the back of this strongly Holstein-influenced four-year old becomes more muscled. On Verden’s indoor show on the Sunday before Perigueux was a shi-ning star in the Grand Prix at the same place. He was the unchallenged winner with his rider Eva Bitter. Three days later he sent his second vintage to the free-jumping competition. Daughter Pina Colada exhibited the same ambition as her sire. Heinrich Habermann from Obershagen bred the mare out of a dam by Landor S. Pina Colado fini-shed third in the first group and improved last year’s result of her full-sister St.Pr. aspirant Paula by one place. Pina Colado completed the tasks at-tentively and became better as the demands incre-ased. She is out of the damline of Flindra which received attention because of Delloren and rider Franziska Baum.

Starbuck by Stakkato Gold is the name of the win-ner of the second group. Günter Rodenberg from Diepenau bred him out of a successful competition dam by Ramiro’s Son II. Starbuck received athletic ability from both sides of his pedigree; his career path appears predestined. “Starbuck convinced with his flawless attitude and presented himself as the “absolute jumper”, said Harm Sievers. With respect to his construction he has all the levers that allow him to be a powerful jumper. He also has the necessary cleverness, the required inner value and great reflexes. All these assets let us hope for a great sport horse career. In the end Star-buck ranked at about eye-level with Skylook. Only two-tenths separated these two exceptional hor-ses.

St. Pr. aspirant Costa Rica by Comte/A Jungle Prince (breeder/owner: Peter von der Fecht-Ehlers, Belum) placed second in this group. The bay left the Herwart von der Decken-Show as Reserve Champion. The rectangular and attentively jum-ping mare fully confirmed her performance ability from last summer. She furthermore impressed with good basic gaits and a very beautiful type. She did however lack a little bit of liveliness which is ex-pected from the damline of Ilythia. Her most fa-mous descendants are the sires Archipel and Cash-man. Both call this attribute their own. The mistake

Costa Rica made and reacted to in a desirable fa-shion may otherwise not have been made!

The damline of Jolante can probably be found most often in the free-jumping competitions of the Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding. This line came to fame through World Cup-Cham-pion The Natural. But not just through him; often descendants make it into top competition. Quite often they change owners through Verden’s auc-tion program. Kurt-Heinrich Böttcher cherishes this damline in Brüninghorstedt. He was successful with it this year, too. Coco Sympathika by Chacco-Blue/Sandro took third place in the second group. She beautifully and powerfully handled the tasks and was always eager and attentive without ever loosing the necessary composure. The elegant mare had already attracted attention as a foal be-cause of her type. She placed second on the foal show for descendants from the Program for Hano-verian Jumper Horse Breeding in Nienburg.

At that time Qualtinue by Quality/Continue (bree-der/owner: Breed Partnership Rippe & Lachnit, Ni-enburg) placed ahead of Coco Sympathika. This time he was also ahead ever so slightly with res-pect to the scores; however a direct comparison did not occur as the ambitious bay participated in the third group. At times he appeared a bit over-zealous creating his own predicament. He was able to handle all the questions without any prob-lems as he has ample ability and good reflexes and finished in first place in the third group. Last year he had finished in forth place. Manuela Lachnit had provided the vintage champion then with Gra-tino by Graf Top/Contendro. In respect to perfor-mance ability Qualtinue’s pedigree is well secured

Another grandson of Stakkato won in the 2nd group: Starbuck by Stak-kato Gold/Ramiro’s Son II.

with Weingau and Steinpilz xx in the background. He could be following in the footsteps of his half-brother Lorenzo Cinzano by Landor S who success-fully competes at the S-level. The reserve champion in the third group is a son of Calido out of a com-petition-proven dam by Espri. The large grey (bree-der: Werner Wegener; owner: Torben Wegener, Wunstorf) repeated last year’s success. He exhibi-ted considerable ability at the fence. His dam had already been convincing in this regard at the mare performance test. She received a 10,0 for her free jumping. The sire Comte had another St. Pr. daugh-ter in the top three. St. Pr. aspirant Clara out of a dam by Escudo II (breeder: Peter Mahler, Neuhaus) placed third in the third group. This young lady im-pressed with her elegance and prominence. She solved every task with ease, an alert eye and good reflexes.

The years where the descendants of only certain stallions dominated the free-jumping competitions are over. The Hanoverian Jumper-Horse Breeding Program is based on a broad foundation. The top of the four-year old vintage was of very good qua-lity. We wished the top group to be larger though. “The participants were of very different type,” Harm Sievers summed up. “Many well jumping horses participated and we saw top horses in the lead. Size and frame are of great importance in the jumper ring today. We must not neglect that fact. Hanoverian breeders have made a good choice in the careful and selective use of Holstein blood. It is important to continue to select top jumper stalli-ons for our good jumper lines.” Not all horses ap-peared to be in the best training’s condition. There-fore we must not act rashly and judge these youngsters prematurely. n

Qualtinue by Quality/Continue was presented by Manuela Lachnit and received the highest score of the third group.

They count among the most popular and re-cognizable symbols of Canada: The Royal Ca-nadian Mounted Police (RCMP), affectionately known as the “Mounties”. The policemen on horseback ensure not only law and order in the second largest country of the world, they also regularly present their “Musical Ride”. It has been the long desire of the Hannoveraner Verband to welcome its Canadian customers with the Musical Ride in Verden. And now it is the first time that the RCMP will celebrate its fantastic choreography to music in the saddle in the Niedersachsenhalle – on May 4, 2012.

The RCMP is breeding their black horses for the Musical Ride in their own stud in Pakenham, Ontario. For more than 20 years, the Mounties have been closely co-operating with the Han-

noveraner Verband, and they almost exclusi-vely acquire their horses from the Hanoverian breeding area. There are presently about 20 Hanoverian broodmares stabled with the stud, complemented by three stallions.

The Musical Ride has already been developed by members of the mounted police in Canada in 1876 with the purpo-se of presenting their riding skills on the one hand and to entertain the audience on the other hand. Throughout the many years, this has been developing into a fascinating and unique show, delighting thousands of spectators in Canada, North Ame-rica and many other parts of the world year by year. The RCMP with its 36 riders and horses will travel to Europe in June on the occasion of the 60th throne anniversary of Queen Eli-

sabeth II. Before continuing their trip to Great Britain, the team will stop in Verden on May 4 and present their impressive show in the Niedersachsen-halle in Verden. The Canadian show presentation will be embedded by more fascinating show acts. “We are happy that we have finally been in a position to present this fantastic show presentation this year,” Dr. Ludwig Christmann, head of the development and consulting department of the Hannovera-ner Verband, summarizes. “The Mounties have been very close with the Hanoverian horse and with the Verband for many years, and now they have the chan-ce to present their incredible skills to the German audience.”

Tickets are available in our ticket shop under www.hannoveraner.com at Euro 25.

Auction

Auction rider Anett Müller entered the well-at-tended auction arena riding Sunshine by San

Remo/Frenchman and with a beaming smile on her face. She was obviously pretty sure that selling this chestnut mare would take a bit longer. She asked the mare to trot and every visitor immediately knew that this was a very special auction candida-te. Sunshine presented herself in superb fashion with powerful and elastic movement eliciting one bid after the other from prospective buyers. A cus-tomer from Schleswig-Holstein placed the last bid of Euro 47,000.00 after an exciting bidding duel. The daughter will train Sunshine. The entire party was overjoyed. Grand applause from the entire au-dience accompanied Anett Müller and top seller Sunshine on their last canter around the ring. Breeder and exhibitor Samantha Hahn from

Kürstedt was overjoyed and celebrated her suc-cessful debut as auction exhibitor.

Bellamie H by Balou du Rouet/Sandro became the top selling jumper. The bay (breeder: ZG Hagenah and Gustafsson-Hagenah, Oerel) had already showed off her jumping ability during the training time. She convinced with her technique, caution and courage at the fences. Auction rider Christoph Kühl enjoyed the daily training with the show-ex-perienced athlete. “A horse with spirit and good attitude! She knows of her ability and takes the rider with her.” Bellamie H greatly inspired buyers from the Rhineland who won the bidding duel at Euro 30,000.00.

800 horse enthusiasts, prospective buyers, bree-ders and friends of the Hanoverian horse awaited the beginning of the auction with great anticipati-on. St. Pr. aspirant Secret Love was the first horse in the ring. She was the shining start of a collection rich in quality with an above average performance test result. She impressed with her elegant appea-rance with powerful, subtle movement in all three basic gaits. Sascha Boehnke who is a long-stan-ding auction rider beautifully presented this daughter of Sir Donnerhall/Rotspon (breeder: Ste-phan Bull, Ihlienworth; exibitor: Andrea Prikler, Pandorf). “This mare is a joy to ride every day. You start off where you finshed the day before. She learns daily.” Loyal customers from Switzerland recognized the dressage talent and fell in love with the black diva right away. Auction

Germany for training. She will be prepared for up-per levels in a professional training facility.

The winter auction was the first sale event of 2012. The new auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener viewed the course that the auction had taken, its execution and result positively. “The year started out powerfully. We welcomed many new customers to Verden who were enthusiastic about the quality of the Hanoverian riding horses and bid successfully. And that makes us very happy!” A change in personnel with respect to customer ser-vice has taken place. Meike Vogel and Thomas Schönig now support Jeanine Pagel as advisors for the dressage collection. This addition to the ad-visory team will optimize customer service and al-low us to continue to professionally attend to the growing number of customers.

Guests from Finland greatly enjoyed their visit to Verden with Kati Siebrecht. Eight young Hanoveri-

ans found a new home high up in northern Europe. Eight other Hanoverians do not have to travel qui-te that far to their new homes. A group of buyers from France who came with Ariane Pourtavaf were overjoyed about their purchases especially as the day of the auction was also the birthday of one of the customers. The winter auction finished with a realistic price structure proving that the collection was appropriately selected for the market.

The relation of prices was in balance: 22 horses sold between Euro 11,000 and 14,999, 35 Hano-verians sold for more than Euro 15,000.00. 49 horses will remain in Germany while 43 sold to foreign countries. “The first sale event took a posi-tive course. We hope for more good sales through our well-established auction site. We build upon our good relations with our breeders who show us their products on the selection sites. This is the only way to guarantee quality,” Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener summed up. n

Bellamie H by Balou du Rouet/San-dro was the highest priced jumper. He sold for 30,000 Euro to the Rhineland.

In the past the breeder of the performance test champion from the test for state stud sires in Adel-heidsdorf had received the Freiherr von Stenglin-Prize. This distinction as well as the decorative platter of the association for stallion performance test champions from other testing sites was pre-sented at the annual meeting. The awarding of these prizes was also up for discussion with intro-ducing the stallion performance test-reform in 2011. After careful consideration in the breeding book committee the board decided to replace the-se awards with new prizes on its December mee-ting.

The basic idea remains the same. Breeders that have produced sires that have completed a very good performance test are to be honored. The per-formance of Hanoverian sires which have comple-ted the 70-day performance test as three-year olds and are licensed is decisive when the award is pre-sented. The breed values for dressage and jumping are the determining factors. The stallion with the highest breed value does not necessarily have to have a high value for the breed. Therefore we want to present awards to several stallions or rather

breeders of stallions; three dressage stallions and three jumper stallions.

The awards have been named after a representati-ve of each discipline; Weltmeyer for dressage and Stakkato for jumping. Both producers caused for a sensation even at a young age. Weltmeyer won his performance test and as a three-year old became Bundeschampion. Stakkato was the unchallenged winner in the jumper index of his vintage and made his way into top competitions without dif-ficulties. Both have strongly and decisively influ-enced the Hanoverian breed up to today and were awarded the title Hanoverian Stallion Of The Year. Naming the awards after these two phenomenal sires allows for the hope that the stallions that re-ceive these awards (the Weltmeyer-Prize and the Stakkato-Prize) will follow a similar career path and become just as successful. The first step in this direction is accomplished with an excellent perfor-mance test result. The awards were presented to the breeders during the presentation of the priva-tely owned stallions. The presentation of the tested and licensed four-year old vintage offers a first class setting. n

Del Magico was born on the farm of Stefan Hermann. Peter Limbecker discovered the bold colt on the elite foal auction in 2008. Peter Limbecker manages a dressage stable on the Estate Adelsried on the Starnberger See (Lake) together with daughter Susanna. They specialize in raising and training talen-ted up and coming youngsters. “The entire package was right with Del Magico. I liked the pedigree and his movement,” Susanna Limbecker remembers. Two years later the grey went to the licensing, became premium sire and sold for Euro 200,000.00 to Aegyd Pengg from Austria who devotes his time to the breeding of horses in Kärnten on the Wörthersee.

Del Magico attracted attention on the riding horse championships in Verden before repre-senting Hanoverian colors in Warendorf. He completed his performance test in Adelheids-dorf where he convinced with his exceptional basic gaits. He was one of the best in his age group with a SPT-breed value dressage of 143. His pedigree reflects a versatile predis-position. His dam delivered Silvia by Silvio who is a jumper with S-level successes. The following stallions are out of the Kanonen-futter line: Graf Douglas, Romancero and Go on Top as well as Bundeschampion and top selling auction horse Bacchus von Worren-berg. n

Quasar de Charry was discovered on the elite foal auction in 2008. Hannjörg Hereth from Switzerland bought the chestnut out of the breeding program of Erika Lütjen, Gras-berg for 120,000 Euro. Quasar de Charry was the top seller. He received a premium award for his dressage ability at the licensing in Ver-den in 2010. After that he went to Ingo Pape in Hemmoor for training; he stood at stud there, too. Quasar de Charry’s owners expec-ted a combination of high-quality training and most favorable use as a breeding stallion from Hemmoor. “Quasar de Charry is an in-credibly beautiful horse,” Ingo Pape raves. “He is also very friendly and utterly pleasant to handle.” He was only allowed to walk in the spring due to growing problems. He re-mained well balanced and quiet. He went to Adelheidsdorf for the test at the beginning of September. “Quasar de Charry developed very positively there,” so Ingo Pape. A convin-cing SPT-breed value dressage of 156 and an adjusted final dressage score of 8,86 express his ability in numbers.

Numerous dressage horse producers and competition horses have descended out of his dam line Pille even though the most fa-mous representative is actually a jumper: The great successes of Walzerkönig who was the Olympic team champion in Seoul will remain unforgettable. n

A bidding duel because of Spörcken broke out in 2010. State stud manager Dr. Axel Brockmann proved his stamina and in the end took the typy dark bay to Celle. Exhibitor Detlef Ruddat from the Breeding Farm Ger-kenhof was overjoyed with the final sale pri-ce of Euro 300,000.00. He had bought Spör-cken as a foal from his breeder Benedicte Meyer from Luxembourg who had only taken Spörcken to Verden for the foal show during the summer. Right from the start the breeders in Roydorf where the stallion spent his first breeding season liked the long-legged dark bay. “Everyone wanted to see him under saddle,” Obersattelmeister Ole Köhler noted. “On the licensing he was already selected for the insemination station Lüneburg-Nord as a suitable sire for the daughters of Don Frederi-co and Weltruhm in the catchment area of the breeding station Roydorf.” He convinced in every aspect at the 70-day test: He obtai-ned the highest value of his age group with a SPT-breed value in dressage of 165 points. Spörcken’s roots are in the line of Norodina. Her representatives in competition are Borsa-lino by Bolero who is one of Germany’s best dressage horses with rider Heike Kemmer and privately owned sire Bon Bonaparte who successfully competed in dressage up to Grand Prix and whose dam Weingräfin is the great-granddam of Spörcken’s dam La Beale Isoud. n

Starpower descends out of one of Hanover’s most successful dam lines. The line of Schnei-derin in came to full flourish at Starpower’s breeder Manfred Schäfer in Köchingen. He is the President of the Hanoveraner Verband. In addition to several international jumpers like El Paso, Wahre Liebe, Lomitas, Lambourghini Diablo or Wait and See team dressage World Champion Sunrise carried the reputation of this dam line out into the world. Frambeau, Schwarzenegger, Westernhagen, Royal Classic and Floratio came to fame on Starpower’s sire side.

Starpower’s dam St. Pr. mare Enjoy who is the full-sister to Bundeschampion El Paso won the free-jumping competition of the Program for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding in 2000. Her son by Salito followed into her footsteps in 2009. Starpower placed third in 2011. Four months prior to that he could not impress at the stallion licensing. “I have always believed in the stallion. Even as a foal he had that spe-cial appearance; he was always very willing in training,” Manfred Schäfer explains. T

Dutch stallion manager Henk Nijhof noticed the dark bay and bought him without hesitation on the breeder’s farm. Starpower participated in the performance test in Prussendorf where he won with a SPT-breed value for jumping of 139. He was licensed in January 2012. n

The second Stakkato Award-winner out of the breeding program of Dr. Jacobs GbR is Sampres. His future as a jumper was pre-destined when the dark bay sold to Ian Cal-lender-Easby from South Africa on the elite foal auction in 2008. He bought him for Euro 10,000.00 in Verden and sent the colt to Christian Pfeil‘s Farm in Bremerhaven to raise him there. “He was naughty but smart and teachable and a stallion type from the begin-ning. He jumped everything and most of the time one meter higher than necessary,” Christian Pfeil tells.

Sampres’ dam Asulina passed on the jumping talent to her offspring. Her daughter Escada S already celebrates successes at the S-level; Sampras’ full-brother Wallenberg NLD stood at stud at the renowned station of Henk Ni-jhof in the Netherlands for three years. It took Sampres two attempts to get on the licensing ring. He was licensed after a short preparati-on time with Rudolf Rehkamp and received a premium award in Verden in December of 2010. The stallion went to Schleswig-Hol-stein for training and in September on to Adelheidsdorf for the 70-day test. He not only received the highest adjusted jumper score out of 28 participants but also moved to his new home the breeding farm Famos with a SPT-breed value jumping of 138. n

Family Dr. Jacobs is completely and entirely devoted to breeding jumper horses. 2012 they triumphed: Cassillias and Sampres, two stallions from Bierbergen, received the Stakkato-Prize. Shortly after the birth of Cas-sillias State Stud Manager Dr. Axel Brock-mann secured a share in the youngster. Bree-der Dr. Jacobs wanted to raise the colt himself.

The dark bay spent his youth in the proven hands of Fritz Engelke in Kaltenwalde where numerous youngsters out of Jacob’s breeding program have grown up. “Cassillias was a very big and very correct foal,” Dr. Bonny-Jasmin Jacobs reflects. Her father Dr. Karl-Otto Jacobs had purchased the colts grand-dam in 1997 because he always wanted to own a daughter of Landadel for his jumper-breeding program. Cassillias’ dam had been sold to Bavaria. She belongs to the line of Artoza which already is represented in inter-national competition by Prinze Haylord.

Cassillias moved into Adelheidsdorf for the first test. He impressed from the first day on-wards. His jumping ability was to be expec-ted. He also convinced in the dressage ring with excellent scores for his walk, canter and rideability. His jumping ability was rewarded with a breed value of 142; his dressage qua-lities are reflected in a breed value of 133. n

Breeder‘s portrait

You cannot but notice numerous photos of highly decorated bulls when you enter

the office of Ulrich Edel. Between them you can find the one or other photo with equine motives. “It is the other way around in my office,” daughter Ulrike Edel-Heidhues laughs. “Horse pictures are definitely in the majority.” You notice quickly: the heart beats for breeding animals on the estate Bünd-heim. It is located in picturesque Bad Harz-burg on the outskirts of the National Park Harz – Hanoverians as well as Angus cattle. Both are pursued with great enthusiasm and passion.

76-year old Ulrich Edel grew up on an agri-cultural farm in Westphalia. He is a trained farmer. He managed large farms and agricul-tural estates for 25 years before he leased the estate Bündheim from a monastery and from the state of Lower Saxony. He moved to Bad Harzburg together with his wife Anne-gret and his daughters Ulrike and Anne and leased the facility until 2004. Jointly in a GbR they now work 700 hectares of cropland and 80 hectares fields that he works indepen-dently. A colorful herd of cows belonged to the monastery estate in 1980 which Ulrich Edel attended to with great passion. He has developed one of the most successful herds of Angus cattle in Lower Saxony with hard work and lots of finesse over many years. To-day the herd counts 60 head. Federal and state champions descend out of this “noble” breeding program. Every year the best young bulls from Bündheim are offered for sale in February in Verden during the “Meat Cattle Days”. “We are not quite as successful with

our Hanoverians as we are with our cattle. But we are on a good path,” Ulrich Edel says with a smirk. Officially he is retired but he actively supports his daughter on the farm.

So father so daughter37-year old Ulrike Edel-Heidhues knew early on that she wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps and preferably in Bad Harzburg. She completed her agricultural training and studied agricultural science with an emphasis on business administration and farming in Soest. After that she worked on farms with crops in Lower Saxony and in the Rhineland to gain experience. Ulrike Edel-Heidhues re-turned home to the parental farm in 2002. The committed mother of two boys, four-year old Paul and eight months old Erik, faces a special challenge. She met her husband Rolf Heidhues during her studies. They have led a distant relationship since then. He manages a dairy farm with a swine mast operation in Soest, Westphalia. “He comes from a family that is devoted to eventing. He understands my passion,” Ulrike Edel-Heidhues explains. She is ever so grateful for the daily support from her parents.

The farm operation stands on several legs. The monastery estate is a top address in Lo-wer Saxony when you are looking for field board. Guests are welcome from the begin-ning of May until mid October to enjoy the spacious and rich fields around the racetrack in Bad Harzburg. “We offer the best condi-tions. The old trees offer shade during the summer, natural creeks offer ample water and the herd of cows supplies a positive con-

tribution to the field care,” expert Ulrich Edel explains. Insiders know about these perfect conditions for young horses and it is therefo-re not surprising that one or the other top star has spent his youth here. The most pro-minent example is Goldfever I: He was one of the world’s most successful jumpers as an adult – as a yearling he played in the fields in the ‘Vorharz’. Chacco Chacco from the Bree-ding Farm Tannenhof was approved in Verden in 2009. He also was raised by the Edel fami-ly and so was Dubarry, who is now stationed at the State Stud Celle. The farm offers addi-tional services, too. They foal out mares and care for retired horses. The services were of-ficially recognized in 2007. In a competition “The future belongs to operations of quality” from the Consulting Firm Schade and Partner the Monastery Estate Bündheim received an award for excellent and competent horse ma-nagement. In 2008 the monastery estate was recognized as an FN-tested horse boarding facility.

Foundation mare Feurige“When I was an apprentice and even later on than that horses were used in the fields. “We had to start the Warmblood and Coldblood horses under saddle as the young hands on the farm” the senior chef remembers. “The horses disappeared once motorization incre-ased but my passion for riding in the hunt field and cross-country remained.” In 1972 he took over the Westphalian mare Farrah over from his sister-in-law. The legendary Fei-ner Kerl was on the sire side of Farrah’s pedi-

gree. As Ulrich Edel wanted to have his own young horse he decided to breed Farrah one more time. The stallion of his choice was Fu-rioso II. Feurige was born a year later. Feurige never remained unnoticed, “Four high white stockings and a huge blaze and a spot on her belly!” Ulrich Edel describes the foundation mare of his breeding program. “The judges on the mare show in Hohenhameln conside-red her to be too colorful but she convinced with her type and her powerful movement.” Feurige delivered 14 foals including the mare Adelheid by Augustinus xx. The then eleven-year old Ulrike started the mare under saddle with the help of her riding instructor. “She had a wonderful disposition.” The young pair collected many winning ribbons and success-fully competed up to the L-level in dressage. Adelheid died after delivering only one foal. Feurige also produced Dixieland by Diadem who was licensed in Verden in 1989. Waterli-ly also goes back to the foundation mare of the breeding program of Family Edel. This daughter of Wolkenstein II received top scores for her free-jumping at her mare per-formance test. She sold as one of the most expensive jumpers to Mexico on the summer auction in 2004. Feurige is also the dam of

Atreju by Augustinus xx, a successful event horse up to CIC*. Today Leonie by London-derry/Diadem carries on the breeding pro-gram. The second pillar of the breeding pro-gram is St. Pr. mare Ginger. Family Edel wanted another daughter of Augustinus xx in remembrance of Adelheid. They could not lo-cate a direct daughter but found Ginger by Grozzo Z/Augustinus xx born 1998 at Uwe Bünger’s farm. Ginger had already delivered seven foals. Emily by Escudo I received the St. Pr. award. Graf Top and Quaid are the sires of the last offspring. St. Pr. mare Clara a daugh-ter of the Trakehner sire Connery is the third broodmare. She was the champion mare at the show in Bodenstein in 2008. She carries the blood of Fabriano, Diadem and Wendelin on the damside of her pedigree. She also goes back to Feurige and expects a foal by Spörcken. Leonie and Clara are bred with dressage in mind; Ginger to jumper sires. Fa-mily Edel does not want to commit to only one discipline.

“We are actually eventing fans,” Ulrike Edel-Heidhues beams. That explains the brave use of Thoroughbred blood in their breeding pro-gram. “The stallions we select obviously have

to fit to the mares.” Clara’s dam St. Pr. mare Fair Play by Fabriano now enjoys her retire-ment. “She was perfectly suited to be bred to a Thoroughbred sire. She has a large frame and a very correct foundation,” breeder Edel-Heidhues knows to share. With her two two- and three-year old daughters Nova and Nena, both by Nobre xx, Fair Play won the class ‘Dam with two daughters’ on the mare show in Bodenstein in 2011. “Blood will give the horses courage and determination. The marketing of event horses however is rather lengthy and complicated,” so Ulrike Edel-Heidhues. As friends of the sport of eventing Family Edel lives in the right spot: An interna-tional 3-day- event takes place in Bad Harz-burg once a year. The Edels serve on the board of the competition and make available their fields for the event. “It goes without saying that we support the competition,” so Ulrich Edel who has served as President of the local Riding Club for years. Horst Köhler awarded him the “Bundesverdienstkreuz” for his exemplary and honorary engagement in 2004. Daughter Ulrike is just like him: She serves on the board of the study group Bo-denstein in the Horse Breeding Club Braun-schweig. n

The Forum of Young Breeders from the Breeding Club Stade, the Society of Priva-

tely Owned Hanoverian Stallions and the Ha-noverian Verband had invited to a podium’s discussion with the headline “SPT in the li-melight” in the Niedersachsenhalle. The sub-ject had provoked heated and at times sub-jective and/or improper debates with the general public as well as the press. The inten-tion of inviting guests was first and foremost to educate, to inform and to explain facts.

The group of experts consisted of stallion manager Ingo Pape from the Stallion Station Pape in Hemmoor, Hauptsattelmeister Joa-chim Winter who has managed the stallion testing station in Adelheidsdorf for the last 18 years, Dr. Kathrin Friederike Stock Equine Veterinarian and in charge of the breed value estimation for horses at the VIT and Dr. Wer-ner Schade. As moderator Ira Hagemann from the Forum of Young Breeders asked all visitors at the beginning, “Forget for a mo-ment everything that you may have heard about the SPT and get involved in the subject as impartial as possible.”

First Dr. Werner Schade explained the deve-lopment of the SPT-reform: A study group at the FN that included representatives from ten different associations has developed the new concept over the last two and a half years. “The old system was no longer acceptable,” Dr. Werner Schade said. “Results from diffe-rent testing stations and different years were not comparable. The index result strictly de-

pended on the composition of each individu-al group. This was no longer a foundation for selection.” The state withdrew entirely from the execution of the performance test and turned the responsibility over to the individu-al associations. “It was our most important goal to create comparability between the performance tests,” so the breeding mana-ger. “We utilize genetic connections that re-flect kindred pedigrees of stallions to create a comparability between stations. As a databa-se we exclusively use information from SPTs which have a high genetic relation to the sui-tability for the sport. The breed value estima-tion is the proper procedure to correct influ-ential factors created by different testing environments.”

The breeding book committee of the associa-tion determined that Hanoverian stallions have to reach an average of 100 in breed va-lues, dressage and jumping, in the 70-day test. The requirement for stallions of other populations is higher - the medium is 110. If stallions only reach a medium of 90, they have the opportunity to receive a breeding permit through a qualification for the Bunde-schampions at the age of five or six. “A breed must select to achieve progress. We want to remain internationally competitive. A suc-cessful marketing program is only possible with top quality horses,” Dr. Werner Schade made clear.

Hauptsattelmeister Joachim Winter describes how the new system affects the test on a dai-

ly basis. For him it actually means relief. “In the past we never handed in the scores wit-hout an exchange of thoughts,” Joachim Winter referred to the broadened training and final testing conditions. It is also impor-tant to strictly adhere to the definition of the scores; after all the SPT is a selection threshold. Ingo Pape made his first experien-ces with the SPT-reform when he sent two stallions to be tested. “You part with animals which are most valuable to you. You must have trust in the testing station. Nothing has changed there.”

New is the way the results are portrayed. “Now you receive the absolute scores in the attribute categories, the deviation to the pre-dicted result and the breed values. You must view these three results in combination and not limit yourself to just one value,” the stal-lion manager explains. He also cautions against focusing only on numbers. “I believe in specialization. In future pedigrees and with that the performance of stallions will become even more specialized. The results of a SPT decide whether or not a stallion is allo-wed to be presented to an licensing commit-tee. Therefore the selection threshold should not be too high in my opinion.” Dr. Werner Schade responded, “We have to differentiate between Hanoverian and foreign stallions. In general Hanoverian stallions are licensed be-fore they are tested. A committee has already evaluated the stallions before they participa-

te in the SPT. We view the licensing and the SPT as one unit and recommend to mare ow-ners to only use tested stallions. Furthermore the medium of 100 is based on intense ob-servations. We tested the past vintages in models and raised the threshold only mini-mally.”

Dr. Kathrin Friederike Stock commented on the breed value estimation and portrayed the advantages. Performance test and pedigree information are combined. “Because of the genetic composition the system recognizes whether it is a strong dressage or a strong jumper vintage and is therefore able to eva-luate the performance of each stallion better. Comparability is created.” It is of utmost im-portance to understand that the indices from the old system cannot be compared to the breed values to which the reform has been applied. Breed values are important building blocks in the information system. She used Celle’s state stud sire Spörcken as an examp-le to illustrate that breed values with and without pedigree information are not as far apart as often portrayed. Furthermore she used the SPT-results to show that many Tra-kehner stallions and stallions with special blood passed the threshold set by the Hano-verian Verband. The following lively discus-sion where stallion managers, riders, bree-ders and judges participated clearly reflected the enthusiasm and idealism for this issue.

Many opinions – one common consensusJudge Fritz Ostmeyer demanded simplifying the scoring system to allow for a better focus in the overall impression of the horses. Bree-der Rudolf Drünert from Schleswig-Holstein views assigning the judges only from a cen-tral location as progress. This eliminates the previous strong possibilities of manipulation. He also suggested withholding the names, origins and pedigrees of the stallions to ob-tain more objective SPT-data. He explained critically, “Final scores must determine the selection not breed values. Mixing own per-formance with a pedigree breed value falsi-fies the evaluation.”

Dr. Schade disagreed, “The scores cannot be compared between testing rounds as the standard of each testing group takes an in-fluence. The breed value estimation balances out this effect with the help of a correction though. The result is that the breed value be-comes a comparable result.” Stallion mana-ger Burkhard Wahler demanded to only use the breed value estimation as a selection cri-terion once more practical information is available.

Dr. Schade also saw possible improvements, “We are happy with the first year. The judges were braver and made use of a larger scoring scale. That is what we need. But then there are things that we still need to work on; for instance standardizing the conditions at the testing stations.” Dr. Ludwig Christmann said, “Since 20 years we have experience with the breed value estimation. It is the me-thod of choice in modern animal breeding.” A common consensus was reached after a controversial debate: The next goal must be the improvement and standardization of the evaluation system. n
