September & October 2013 | 5

The end of summer is growing closer and the University Club is coming into full swing. New menus are being finalized, the golf league is winding down, maintenance projects are nearing completion and we have already begun scheduling Club functions for our fall and winter seasons, kicking off with our Celebration on the Grand Dinner and Fireworks Event. Always well attended, remember to make your reservations early as tables in the Lounges fill quickly. Overflow will be accommodated in the Fireside Room as per usual.

Network Nights will resume on September 11th and will remain on Wednesday through the end of the year. Results of our membership survey showed that 57% of our membership prefers Thursday or Friday evenings for member events, therefore, we plan to move the Network Nights to Thursday beginning in January. Surveys are a great tool in measuring membership satisfaction and I thank those of you who took the time to help us compile important

information. We shared some of the results in the June newsletter but additional comments and suggestions can be found below.

In celebrating our 90th Anniversary this year I have been sharing little tidbits of Club history, decade by decade, in each newsletter. With that, the 1970s are highlighted in the month of September and, in reading the minutes, it seems to be a transitional decade.

- The 70s began on a strong note with a membership waiting list, CDs in the bank and more talk of merging our Club with the Athletic Club of Grand Rapids

- In the early 70s, the Peninsular Club was in the process of adding a large state-of-the-art athletic facility and may have indirectly contributed to the UClub’s decline in membership and, ultimately, decreases in meals served and revenues.

- Food & labor costs continued to rise resulting in a Board decision to begin cashing in CDs in lieu of raising dues and pursuing new management.

- The ongoing topic of the decade, and the most controversial of its time, was allowing women to use and possibly be able to join the University Club

- After several years of debate and meetings with clubs around the country who had already done so, women were accepted to membership beginning in 1978. Under Club President Dana Baldwin, Mary Mead became our first woman member.

- The University Club was the first private club in the city to allow women as equal members with equal access

- By the end of the decade, membership began to climb back to its high of 300

- With revenue increased, a remodel was being planned for the early 1980s

Since the University Club was founded in 1923, it has certainly had its ups and downs with the 1980s being no exception. As I begin my twenty sixth year as General Manager of the University Club this month, I cannot help but reflect on the massive changes the Club has undergone and will have more on that later. In the mean time, I am looking forward to seeing all of you very soon!

- Cynthia Poll, General Manager

A Letter From the General Manager. . .

Cindi (Young) Poll - Class of 1970

Sampling of Survey Results: Thank you for sharing your constructive criticism as well as strong comments. This is what we’ve heard: - Food can be improved/inconsistent/need for better quality/more interesting menu - More local foods, more gluten free options, more vegetarian options - Very good, don’t change a thing, always good - More Casual Dining, need to be denim friendly, need upscale & casual selections - More menu options for seniors, more interesting to 30-60 year olds, revise, upgrade/vary 10th floor menu more often - Improve entrees in Athletic Club, lighter items, can’t get anything small - Parking is an issue - Lower cost, plates in $10 range, more casual options, more variety, more up-scale, outdoor dining would be great - Love the staff, staff is friendly

Introducing ... Meg Fortuna, Event Coordinator Many of you have already met the Club’s newest employee, Meg Fortuna, but she still

deserves a newsletter introduction! Meg joins us from the University Club of MSU (one of

our fine Reciprocal Clubs), located in Lansing, which also happens to be the locale of her

Alma Mater, Michigan State University.

Joining us in March of this year, Meg is one of our Event Coordinators, busy making sure

every detail is just right for all of our members’ functions. She had first hand experience

with wedding planning this summer with her own nuptials taking place in June, marrying

her handsome groom, Josh, in Suttons Bay, Michigan (pictured).

Meg is also in charge of the Club’s bar service and ordering. She is currently revamping our Wine List, and

working closely with our purveyors scheduling Member tastings for the upcoming fall and winter season.

In her spare time, Meg stays active with yoga and kickboxing, and enjoys a nice glass of Chardonnay or local

brew from HopCat. She looks forward to meeting you and planning your next special event!

NEW CLASS! HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT)

As you can see from our class schedule below, we are changing our Total Body Sculpt classes to a 30 minute HIIT

class. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. One of the upsides to a HIIT workout is that it is short in

duration, but very effective. High intensity interval training conditions both your anaerobic and aerobic energy

systems, it increases the amount of calories you burn during exercise and afterwards, it causes metabolic

adaptations that enable the body to use fat as it’s fuel source under a number of conditions, and it is believed to

limit the muscle loss that can occur with weight loss.

HIIT is a specialized form of interval training that involves short intervals of maximum intensity exercise

separated by longer intervals of low to moderate intensity exercise.

There are many variations to HIIT - you can vary the different number of high and low intensity intervals, change

up the levels of intensity of the intervals, and/or alter the duration of each interval.

So, if you are looking to be challenged, wanting to break through a plateau, or just need a quick but effective

workout, come try out the new HIIT class!

Instructor: Jason Goodell, Monday through Thursday, 12:00 - 12:30 pm

* Please note, the Monday & Wednesday morning Spin Class is now adding 5 minutes of core workout!

The UClub’s Summer Golf League has come to a close with the last round on August 26 followed by the end

of the season party. Final standings will be printed in the October newsletter. Thanks to all the players and

subs for a great league! We would love to have more members join us next summer! - Andi & Jason
