The Unintended Victims of August 7th
The crisis experienced by Latino workers arrested in the August 7 raids continues for the arrested individuals,
for their families, but in particular for their children. Even children whose parents were not detained are
reported to be frightened that their parents (documented or not) could be picked up next. Other children
are afraid for themselves, fearing that they will be harmed. Many are too frightened to attend school, and
some will not even go outdoors.
While I do not believe this was an intended result of the raids, these children are nevertheless the collateral
damage of the raids. The lasting scar of traumatic fear is the unintended effect on the lives of the youngest
victims, and that fear still continues to ripple across the hearts of the most vulnerable.
"Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually
see the face of my Father in heaven.” -- JESUS, Matthew 18:10
Looking for ways to make an appreciable difference in this crisis? Here are a few options suggested by the Mississippi Conference
of the United Methodist Church, Bishop Swanson, and other partners actively present in Leake and Scott Counties.
First and foremost, everyone can go to the Lord in prayer. It is written that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and
effective.”
Write your elected leaders to make your views known, and to ask questions.
Financial contributions are welcome to supply the immediate needs of these children. Gracious givers can mail checks to:

Methodist Children’s Homes (MCH) is offering assistance to the Mississippi Conference and local churches affected by the
immigration raids. Currently, the staff at MCH are in communications with the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services
(MDCPS) to determine if and how they can assist with caring for any children who need placement. MCH has staff trained in
working with children who have been traumatized and can work with the families as a whole as well. To contact MCH, email or call

Theatre Camp
Children’s Theatre Camp was held the last week of
July at Galloway. The kids spent the week learning
the play, A Tale of Three Trees, and immersing
themselves in art. The show was directed by Lauren
Gunn of New Stage and Rameen Hasmat from
Millsaps College.
It was a fabulous week and could not have been
possible without the help of our amazing volunteers!

Galloway Mystery Trip - 2019
St. Simon’s Island, GA
In the pre-dawn hours of July 28 the Galloway Youth Handbell choir gathered in the chapel surrounded the gentle

very long hours later, the tired group arrived on St. Simon’s Island, 75 miles south of Savannah, Ga. In addition to
eight hours of daily rehearsal, the group also worked together to choose a name for themselves, as they begin a
new season together. After much debate and deliberation the choir christened themselves

Advent Devotional 2019
In preparation for Christmas this year, the Galloway Advent Booklet,
entitled "All Good Gifts" will explore the nature of giving. James 1:17
contains the beloved words: Every good and perfect gift is from above,
coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change
like shifting shadows. How, in this season of giving and receiving, do we
reflect or not reflect the good and perfect giving of the "Father of heavenly
lights? Do you have a story to share about the intersection of giving and the
divine? How have you been blessed in the process of giving and receiving?
Have you experienced holy giving? If so, please consider sharing your story
or thoughts in the form of an Advent devotional; it would be a lovely
Christmas gift to your church family.
Submissions should be 350 words or less and may be emailed to Nora
Frances McRae at [email protected]. If you have a story to tell, but
are not comfortable writing, Nora Frances is happy to assist.

“Romans (Good News That Changes Everything)”
By Melissa Spoelstra
Find the good news that brings hope and spiritual renewal. We live in a world full of bad news. The media recounts storiesof natural disasters, violence and conflict. In the midst of all this heartbreak, we can’t lose sight of the fact God has given us good news.
We call it the gospel. It reminds us that God loves us and longs to redeem our suffering. A six week study of Romans that encourages women with good news of the gospel regardless of the bad news they are facing.
Women will be inspired with a spiritual renewal that spreads to those around them. The study offers different levels of commitment for women in every season of life as well as strong solid Scripture by Melissa.
Our Women‘s Bible Study Group would like to have you join us for this six week study. Any questions please call Donna Robbins at 662-347-4713. Thank you and we hope to have you join us.
We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with hosting panels for the
2019 Mississippi Book Festival. Special thanks to all who assisted with providing hospitality for the
thousands who entered our Sanctuary, Fellowship Center, and
The Foundery.

Thank you Judy Taylor for coordinating Book Buddies and all the Brown school
Buddies. Judy is stepping down but Jean Hudspeth is stepping up. We need our
Brown school volunteers to come back and we need new volunteers.
Here are a few ways the students of Clausell could use your gifts and talents:
Reading buddies, mentors, provide school supplies, participated in the school’s
career fair, be a judge at the reading and science fairs. Some events are only
once in the school year, others like reading buddies is 30 minutes one day a
week.

Prayer Shawl Ministry Needs Your Help!
Prayer Shawls are one of the most appreciated gifts received by church members.
When facing difficult times the Prayer Shawl is a constant reminder that we are not
alone. Galloway pastors and laypeople have given over 100 Prayer Shawls to members and others close to our church
family. Due to growing requests, our Prayer Shawl supply is low. We welcome anyone who wants to learn how to knit
(it is simple knitting and easy to learn) and those with knitting experience to a time of sharing, prayer and creating gifts
bathed in love.
Our next Prayer Shawl knitting session will meet at the church on September 23 at 5:30 pm in the Craft Room.
We’ll even offer you a snack. Johnnye Catherine Bradford 601-942-9747
Missions and Outreach

MCH’s “Little Light of Mine” offering will be in October instead of December this year! Start praying about how you can support this wonderful ministry. This is our Methodist Children’s Home!!!
Grace Place Report
For the first six months of 2019 Grace Place
served 8,591 meals and 1.870 bags of clothing
given. Thank you for your gifts of time,
service and treasures.
Formation of a Safety Task Force
Galloway has formed a Safety Task Force to create a safer church and to help our members become more
aware of issues that may be of concern. In July, Cary Stockett, Sherry Russun, and Lee Smith attended a
safety conference for Methodist Churches at Lake Jualuska in North Carolina. Also in July, a safety consultant
from Camp Shelby met with a small group of Trustees and Staff. The Safety Task Force has been formed as a
result. The committee is comprised of about thirty Galloway members and staff. In order to gather
information and examine the different areas of concern, we have formed ten subcommittees that will report
to the full Committee. The different areas of concern are the following:
Member Communications/Safety Protocol
Active Shooter in Building
Nursey/Children in Building
Medical Emergency
Tornado/Severe Weather/Fire
Homeless Visitors
Building Safety
Signage Inside and Outside
Parking Lot Safety
Evacuation Routes
We ask for your input in this important process. If you have a suggestion for the committee please make it
known. This committee will make recommendations to the Trustees for implementation. We are committed
to the safety and well being of the entire Galloway community.
Thank you,
Jim Moss, Trustee Chair

Wellsfest Golf Tournament Wellsfest has grown through the years from a small church music festival to a major community
event that has generated nearly $1.5 million for local non-profits. The beneficiary for 2019 is Extra

Galloway to form two or three four-person golf teams. The tournament is, September 25 at
Whisper Lake Country Club.

GALLOWAY IS A
STEPHEN MINISTRY
CONGREGATION
We all experience challenges in life,
and there are times when we could benefit from the support
of a caring Christian friend. Stephen Ministers are ready to
provide one-to-one, emotional and spiritual care we need
when faced with a crisis such as the loss of a loved one,
hospitalization, divorce or separation, unemployment or a job
crisis, terminal illness, incarceration, recovery after an
accident or disaster, and many other life challenges. If you
are interested in receiving confidential Christian care from a
Stephen Minister, please contact Cary Stockett, Emily Sanford
or Susan Richards.
Grief takes many forms; the loss
through death of a loved one,
health or caregiving issues, job
loss, life changes such as the
empty nest, and many other
transitions. Galloway’s grief
group is a safe place to
process grief with others, and
to know that you are not alone.
Facilitated by counselor and Stay-Home Hospice
Chaplain, Julie Orr, this group meets once a
month. The next meeting will take place on
Monday, October 7, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. in the Parlor.

WELCOME New Members
We are pleased to join Galloway United Methodist Church
as members this week. We have felt welcome here from the
first service we attended, and knew this faith community
was the match we have been seeking. Andi comes from First
Baptist Church in Madison and Bill comes from Sacred Heart
Catholic Church in Canton, and are recently married. The
worship experience here has been a blessing to us both,
with the combination of reverence and ritual that brings great comfort.
We look forward to meeting many more people in this congregation and engaging in
more of the many activities that Galloway has to offer.
